Jason Radisson was introduced to us as a serial ‘unicorn breeder' that we needed to talk with. Well, yes, he has over 20 years of experience in strategy, operations, and growth with global companies like Uber and Brazil's 99Taxis, but what we were really excited about was his passion for bringing frontline workers digital advancements so that they weren't left behind and left out of the technology revolution that has improved the worklife of desk workers in the last five years. Jason is the founder of Movo, a platform designed to streamline processes for any ‘on their feet' or ‘in the field' workforce member by providing a flexible and better connected work experience. All with the goal to lead to productivity enhancements, employee satisfaction and reduction in turnover. Our conversations balanced lessons learned by Jason as a business builder as well as the ambitions of his latest work through Movo. Here are the highlights of our talk: - Motivation Behind Movo: Jason identified a significant gap in the market for digitizing frontline work, particularly for blue-collar workers who lacked the benefits of automation and connectivity seen in white-collar settings. - Value of Experience: Drawing from personal experiences, Jason stresses the importance of gaining industry experience before venturing into entrepreneurship. He suggests that learning from seasoned professionals can help avoid common pitfalls and accelerate growth. - Team Dynamics: A key aspect of Silicon Valley's success, according to Jason, lies in the team's ability to tackle any problem collectively. He emphasizes the importance of fostering a team culture where members feel empowered to solve challenges effectively. - Knowing the Value of Where You Come From: Jason shared how his humble beginnings led him to value education and seek out more in life. He explained how his drive was enriched by a self-funded education, a Fulbright scholarship, and graduate studies at Harvard. Jason Radisson started his career at McKinsey & Company, where he worked with the Firm's top clients in Spain, Germany, and Latin America on high-profile, M&A, organizational design, and workforce projects. As a Regional General Manager at Uber, he launched and grew cities in the western US. He was then hired to run Brazil's 99Taxis, where as COO he grew the business 10x on $50M in invested capital, and sold it to DiDi Chuxing for $1B, making it the most capital-efficient scale-up recorded by a gig marketplace. He is also a member of the Rappi-Mafia, where he was an early investor and helped the Rappi founders scale their Operations and Growth teams efficiently across Latin America. Today, more than 20 venture-backed CEOs are alumni of his earlier teams. Jason is passionate about using mobile technology and algorithms to empower and uplift the frontline workforce, which he believes is the foundation of the economy and society. He founded Movo to address the challenges and opportunities of digitizing this workforce, which is overlooked and underserved by the horizontal technology incumbents. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to build organizational superpowers. My guest is Jason Radisson, Founder and CEO of Movo. Jason is a tech entrepreneur on a mission. He inherited his single mother's work ethic as he worked various blue-collar jobs to fund his education. He started his career at McKinsey & Company. He then became an entrepreneur and joined the early days of Uber, where he launched and grew cities in the western US as a Regional General Manager. Fast forward to today, and Jason has built multiple tech unicorns, including rideshare giant 99. His latest venture, Sh1ft helps remove friction from employment across frontline labor industries such as manufacturing and healthcare. He is passionate about using technology to empower and uplift the frontline workforce, which he believes is the backbone of the economy and society. That became the trigger to found Movo in early 2019 to address the challenges and opportunities of this segment, which is often overlooked and underserved by traditional HR solutions. Their mission: To improve the gig economy by making it as good for employees as it has been for employers. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Jason to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way the market has access to talent. Jason puts his finger on the opportunity HRTech vendors have failed to address and shares his vision of how to solve this global problem by taking a fresh approach. He shares his big lessons learned on how and when to scale the business. And last but not least, the tells a story about how they created remarkable differentiation when the market needed it most. Here's one of his quotes We can replace Workday for massive employers. That's what we're gunning for. Just our philosophy towards sharing, It's been almost an afterthought by the HR tech industry to have your workforce talking to each other and sharing with other people. We think people should share, and you should be able to follow people who are in your profession in other countries, and you should be able to have casual mentoring and casual interactions outside of work. And it's kind of the antithesis of where traditionally, HR software has been. During this interview, you will learn four things: How you can gain instant differentiation by creating the antithesis of the accepted traditional approach That augmenting your tech with human touch can mean your breakthrough How adding cross-company community-building components to connect peers can become the stickiness factor your solution has been waiting for. How to deal with advice from investors - especially when it's extremely tempting. Short-form video has become the fastest and most effective way to build a brand and business online. Think about it, it allows you to reach millions of potential customers, you've got “Viral” potential with every video, and it's relatively easy to create and distribute across most major platforms. The challenge? Most businesses haven't figured out how to make it work for their business. They either go too entertaining and meaningless. Or they go ultra business-y and boring and it flops. Today, you learn how to make effective short form video content that drives business results! Let's get into it. First of all, to create compelling short-form video content, you don't need fancy equipment. A smartphone with a good camera is sufficient, although a tripod and a quality microphone are recommended (Comica and MOVO are two of my favs). The length of the video should generally be between 20 seconds to 60 seconds, but longer videos can also perform well if they are engaging. It's easier to START here though. When it comes to the type of content, you can create educational, inspirational, entertaining, or edutainment videos. It's important to grab the viewers' attention within the first few seconds and provide value or entertainment throughout the video. Remember, these videos are going in feed based platforms like LinkedIn, TikTok, and Youtube Shorts so you can't waste a single second. Original content is recommended when starting on a new platform, but repurposing clips from long-form videos or podcasts can also be effective. By original content, I mean you create a short form video from scratch using the G.E.M.S. framework below. Why? Because creating from scratch allows you to be much more intentional, you can add in creative hooks, and you've the ability to adjust your message and creativity as needed. I do love repurposing though, because short-form videos can help bring viewers to your long-form content, creating a relationship between the two. :) In terms of editing, the message and delivery are more important than fancy editing techniques. However, changing something in the scene every few seconds can help keep the viewers engaged. Adding graphics, animations, or text that enhance the message or story can also be effective. Ever notice what the elite short form video creators do? They change something up every 2 to 3 to 4 seconds or so. Could be a zoom in, zoom out, animation, text popping up, scene change, b roll, etc. This is done on purpose and keeps the audience engaged! I mentioned the G.E.M.S framework earlier as a guide to helping you create high performing short form video content. In reality, this applies to long form too! Here is it! The GEMS framework: Get clear on your message and audience: Understand who you are trying to impact and how you can make the most impact. Engage your audience with a strong hook: Use bold opinions or statements, compelling stories, or value teases to hook the viewers in the first few seconds. Map out your key points: Scrap the script, and simply jot down your key points that you don't want to miss while recording the video. This keeps it authentic but also focused. Sum up your message: This could be the last sentence or two to drive home a key point, it could be a CTA, or it could be an ending to a compelling message Check out our Youtube and other social media channels for content like this and more! Today on Video Marketing Madness –YouTube Shorts Revenue Share. Ray and Steve outline that and Steve has a cool Shorts case study. Starting in 2023, YouTube will offer a 45% revenue share on shorts but you have to be a member of the partner program. To apply, you need 1000 subscribers and 90 million views in 90 days. Whoa! Zubtitle.com is a cloud based software that lets him upload an existing horizontal video, trim it to up to 60 seconds, and auto formats it to Shorts specs in a few minutes. Today on Video Marketing Madness –How YouTube Helps Online Marketing. Steve has a case study on improving Google rankings using YouTube as part of the mix. Steve's trains YouTube channel is 12 years old, and he noticed Youtube was suggesting videos from folks he subscribed to way back way. All had given up on their channel years ago, and some of them were big names. It appears YouTube is not in the marketing mix. Steve found using YouTube videos as part of the mix pushed up Google Business Profiles(GBP) and website blog posts. A lawn care service went from #23 to #8, and website blog posts rank higher when a video is embedded. Steve starts by opening up a channel under the Google account with the client's Google Business Profile. He phone verifies and optimizes it. Copy for the 1000-word blog and the 250-word GBP posts match the requirements for the new Google “Helpful Content” algorithm. The video is the same title as the post and the name of the business and the city and state. The copy for the 60-second video comes from the Google Business Profile post. The description in the video includes the video title, phone number, the Google Maps URL, website URL, and a citation. Also included is the GBP post copy, links to 5-star reviews, and driving directions to all the communities surrounding the client's location. After that, he posts the copy to the GBP and adds the YouYube URL. He also uploads the video to the post and shares it on social media. Then Steve adds the GPB post URL to the video description. He does this weekly with fresh copy and topics Today's episode is made possible by Movo! Today on Video Marketing Madness –The Importance of Online Reviews. Ray tells us how to get online reviews and why. Google, Facebook, and Yelp are the top three. Remember to ask for a video review and you can post that on all your social media, including your Google Business Profile. You need to get online reviews because folks will gravitate to businesses with lots of 5-star reviews, and they need to be recent as well. Also, it's a ranking factor with Google Business Profiles. Start by having good customer service and then ask for reviews. With his escape room business, Ray hands out cards with a code that takes folks to his Google Business Profile. He incentivizes employees by giving them $5 for every review that mentions their name. Pay attention to Facebook and Yelp. Ray is not crazy about Yelp, but iPhones and Alexa default to it, so you have to have it. The reason Ray doesn't like it is you get more bad reviews and not as many 5-star reviews if you don't run ads with them. Today's episode is made possible by Movo! He's standing up a new channel on real estate investing. You have more control over content and monetization than what you get with YouTube, and there is a low cost per entry. There's lots to do like coding and hosting the video files, but TV Fire Boss does it all for you and they have training to go with it.
