Scott Morse on This Ink Runs Cold

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2025 88:50

A year ago, Scott Morse found himself adrift, severed from a stable income and a defined creative path. Panic was an option. So was fear. Instead, he chose collaboration and creation. This Ink Runs Cold: Short Stories from the Space-Crime Continuum smashes two of his favorite genres between its pages. It's an anthology of one-page pulp stories written by 89 different writers, all drawn by Scott Morse and colored by José Villarrubia. Many of these writers are seasoned comic veterans, animators, and filmmakers. The table of contents includes Mike Allred, Brian Michael Bendis, Jorge Gutierrez, Derek Kirk Kim, Dave McKean, Fábio Moon, Scott Mosier, Eric Powell, Stan Sakai, and on and on and on. Even better, for our purposes anyway, This Ink Runs Cold includes numerous comic book newcomers, including us - Brad and Lisa Gullickson! As of this writing, This Ink Runs Cold has one week left on Kickstarter. Scott Morse and Allen Spiegel Fine Arts offer two editions: the Full-Color version featuring José Villarrubia's wizardry and the limited Black and White Noir version, showcasing Scott Morse's beautiful brushwork. Having knocked out some stretch goals, those backing the Bookplate and Noir/1-2 Punch tiers will get an extra book, The Brush-Offs. This is a 24-page bonus book featuring unused art, abandoned pages, scripts, an alternate prologue/epilogue, and an analysis of this unique writer/artist collaboration. We're beyond honored to contribute one page to This Ink Runs Cold; we're practically in disbelief. Today's podcast is the first time we have featured a story we helped create, and it's an incredibly emotional experience. We're grateful to Scott Morse for coming on the show, explaining how This Ink Runs Cold grew from a mini-devastation, and why this intense injection of collaboration reinvigorated him. We also had the opportunity to explain what our short story "The ADHD P.I." means to us and how it helped us process some anxiety and self-loathing. Working with one page was ridiculously challenging, and what's most exciting is seeing how 88 other writers tackled that challenge and used that finite space in infinite ways. We also start this week's episode with our recent trip to WonderCon and an LAX nightmare we will never forget. If you're here only for the Scott Morse chatter, we won't begrudge you for skipping ahead, but you'll miss out on another outlandish story. This Week's Sponsors: You wake in a hospital bed. Your hand feels heavy, there's a ringing pain in your head. Machine parts have replaced what could not be repaired with flesh. Did the doctors save you, or strip you of your humanity? This is the question facing Adam in Futility Shapes, a one-shot comic live on Kickstarter now! Created by Edward Kane and Dave Fowler. Futility Shapes is a weird blend of The Terminator, The Machinist, and Mass Effect. What shapes you? Visit EdwardKane.net (spell out the name for ease) We're also sponsored by the sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. That's 128 pages of incredible monthly comics for less than $10. Plus, the Beyond the Cape Podcast. If you enjoy Comic Book Couples Counseling, you'd undoubtedly enjoy their show. Beyond the Cape is a laid-back talk show in which every episode highlights their love of this beautiful comic book medium, their personal journey with it, and the respective artists they feature on each podcast. Their prolific roles in cartoons and anime are mentioned. The community of voice actors is described as close-knit and supportive, which creates a neurodiversity-supportive environment that allows Autistic talents to thrive.“I think one of the big payoffs of having a special interest and having a monotropic focus and being able to really master an art. Coach Brendan Suhr is joined by the Head Coach of the Southern Utah Thunderbirds Todd Simon. Coach Simon is in his fourth year at the helm of the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team after being named the head coach on March 24, 2016. Simon’s third season with the program was one for the record books, and one of the most successful the program has experienced in recent memory. The Thunderbirds qualified for postseason play for the first time since 2001, and won the first postseason game in the program’s Division I history in the First Round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The T-Birds defeated the Drake Bulldogs, who were Co-Regular Season Champions of the Missouri Valley Conference. The 2018-19 season provided several milestones. SUU finished .500 for the first time since the 2006-07 season with a mark of 17-17. The T-Birds won nine Big Sky Conference games, which was the most the program had earned since joining the league. They also secured back-to-back winning non-conference records. Prior to Southern Utah, Simon was named interim head coach of the UNLV men’s basketball program in January 2016 and immediately led them to three consecutive victories. During Simon’s 17 games as interim head coach, the Runnin’ Rebels ranked as the number one team in the nation in adjusted tempo, scoring more than 100 points in four games. UNLV finished with a 9-8 record, despite playing with as few as five scholarship players. While he was associate head coach with UNLV he also played a critical role in assembling UNLV’s roster, which Rivals.com ranked its 2014 recruiting class No. 5 in the nation, while the 2015 class was ranked No. 11. Prior to his tenure as a Runnin’ Rebel, Simon served Findlay Prep for seven years in both head and assistant coaching roles. As head coach at Findlay Prep in 2012-2013, he led the team to a 35-1 record, including eight wins over top-25 ranked teams. The 35 victories are the most wins in school history. During Simon’s tenure at Findlay Prep, they accumulated an overall record of 192-9. During his career Simon has helped develop and coach several players that have become top NBA draft picks, including Anthony Bennett, who was selected as the top overall pick in 2013, Rashad Vaughn, who was picked No. 17 in 2015, and Avery Bradley. Other NBA player’s Simon has coached in his career include Christian Wood, Jorge Gutierrez, Cory Joseph, DeAndre Liggins, Nick Johnson and Tristan Thompson. In this episode, Coach Simon discusses how he has went about building his program and culture at Southern Utah; what he learned as an interim head coach that prepared him for this opportunity; the art of coaching elite players; how he arrived at his current style of play; the importance of player development at any level of coaching; how he prepares his team for success in “buy games” this time of year and what it was like to take his team on the road to Nebraska a few weeks back and secure a win vs a well-coached Big 10 opponent. Today's episode is really special because we have Emmy Award winner Jorge Gutierrez with us.  Jorge is a Mexican animator, painter, writer and director who, along with his wife Sandra Equihua, created the multiple Annie and Emmy Award winning animated television series, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, for Nickelodeon. Born in Mexico City and raised in Tijuana, Jorge has completed various films, cartoons, illustrations and paintings exploring his love affair with Mexican pop and folk culture. With an unmistakable can-do attitude, Jorge shares how he views feedback as an opportunity to improve and how he has learned to put his ego aside during the alchemical process of working through and incorporating the suggestions of others. He explains what he finds challenging about working for someone else and why he is willing to play any part in the film production process to serve the greater vision. We also dive into the invaluable lessons he's learned at art school, how his challenges as a Latino immigrant made him stronger and how fear has been a positive driving force in his life. Finally, Jorge reminds us about the importance of falling in love with the process instead of always focusing on the end result. So be sure to join us today for expert insight and a good laugh! For more information about artists, links and resources from this episode, please visit https://notrealart.com/emmy-award-winning-artist-jorge-gutierrez/ Key Points From This Episode: What to expect from the upcoming Not Real Art Conference. Where Sourdough's name comes from. The importance of putting your ego aside in your creative work. Synthesizing and distilling colleagues' commentary on his writing. Why there's no cheat sheet to writing. How he broke out of the boxes in the industry. The problem with art schools not always offering integrated classes. Why specializing is not necessarily the best option. The problem with many artists. Competing by outworking. The fall of 2D and the rise of CG animation. How schooling is no guarantee for work. The challenges of being a Latino immigrant. More about his father's influence in his life. The role of family. Why Generation X is very pragmatic. Learning form failure and hard work. Focusing on the process, not the result. Jorge's first solo art show. And much more!

A history instructor at an Austin charter school told a Black student that she would “hang her upside down on a tree” and “take her down when she is no longer breathing.” The school has written a letter formally apologizing, but has so far refused to fire, suspend, or even investigate the teacher’s conduct. The teacher is still actively working and has attended school events that the student has also attended. What are the larger implications for school accountability and what steps are being taken to ensure a safe learning environment for Austin students? We are joined by Arenda Lawson, the mother of the student who was threatened, and by Chas Moore, the Executive Director of the Austin Justice Coalition, which is circulating a petition on social media to the school to hold the teacher accountable.Later, we commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion that occurred 49 years ago on June 28, 1969. The uprising marked a clear turning point in the struggle for LGBTQ rights. As Pride parades are now held across the country, where are the new points of struggle for LGBTQ liberation today, and what lessons can we learn from Stonewall? For this segment, we are joined by Jorge Gutierrez, National Coordinator for Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement.

The School of Movies Archive

[School of Movies 2017] A little-seen animated film from 2014, produced by Guillermo del Toro, directed by Jorge Gutierrez, the man behind the award-winning show El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. This is a celebration of mexican culture, centred around the Day of the Dead, and the Lands of the Remembered and the Forgotten, as much about life as it is about death, and dealing with ancient gods making wagers with one another over the actions of humans.  Masquerading as a cute, colourful, hyperactive, kid's movie, this in fact has more in common with the work of LAIKA, and slowly, over time, introduces more and more texture and personal touches from its creators who strove to make the art match their beautiful concept work.  A commission by Abel Savard, who encouraged us with his supporting of this episode to dig deeper and find something really rather wonderful.
