Corman Graduates: Jack Hill Part 1 with Calum Waddell

We're unveiling a new series on the podcast: Corman Graduates, where we chronologically discuss the filmography of a director who went through "the Roger Corman school of filmmaking" and we're starting with Jack Hill, director of films like TEH BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY. Joining us for this first episode is writer, film historian, and filmmaker Calum Waddell, who literally wrote the book on Jack Hill with 2009's Jack Hill: The Exploitation and Blaxploitation Master, Film By Film. We start at the very beginning of Hill's career with "The Host," his student film at UCLA, and his entry into the world of Roger Corman with his work on 1962's THE WASP WOMAN and 1963's THE TERROR before getting his first feature-length assignment, 1966's BLOOD BATH aka TRACK OF THE VAMPIRE, which saw Hill try to create a film around footage from a film shot in Yugoslavia that Corman had invested in.  Corman eventually hands it to Stephanie Rothman, another Corman graduate, who took Hill's film about an obsessed artist who murders his models into a vampire film (at Corman's request, of course). Did we like the film? We discuss! We then talk about what Jack Hill felt was his true directorial debut, 1967's SPIDER BABY, which Hill did away from Corman and took some time before it reached theaters and then was mostly forgotten until Quentin Tarantino stepped in the 1990s when he re-released Hill's 1975 film SWITCHBLADE SISTERS on his now-defunct Rolling Thunder Pictures label. We'll discuss the incredible performances - including Sid Haig and Lon Chaney Jr. - and why the film was so prophetic to the horror films that followed it. Don't miss this look into the beginnings of Jack Hill's career with the keen insight and first-hand knowledge of another exploitation expert, Calum Waddell. We close out #PrisonMarch 2: Second Offense with an interview with someone who there at New World from the very beginning: editor Barbara Pokras! After graduating from USC (where she went to school with Dan O'Bannon with whom she would work on RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Barbara found her way to Roger Corman's newly-formed New World Pictures, where she went to work dubbing voices and assisting director Stephanie Rothman on New World's first ever movie, THE STUDENT NURSES. From there, Barbara worked on a variety of movies Roger shot in the Phillipines, like NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN, THE HOT BOX, and THE BIG BUST-OUT! We discuss what it was like to work on those movies, how Barbara worked her way up to joining the Editor's Union and landing a job at Cop Rock, the short-lived police procedural musical, and why it was her favorite job. We also discuss I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND, TOO HOT TO HANDLE, and why Wonder Woman was not her favorite project to work on. We could not have been more thrilled to talk with Barbara Pokras, one of Corman's original film school graduates, and we know you'll love our discussion as much as we did! And when you're done, don't forget to pick up her book, Feeding Mrs. Moskowitz, here. We take a little journey through horror history, with a three-part series focusing on films directed by women. Let's get things started with a psychopathic hitchhiker, a horny desert vampire, a toxic monster, and a denim-clad driller killer!A pioneer in women's filmmaking, Ida Lupino directs a claustrophobic movie set in the wide open desert, that is in truth more classic film noir than horror. What would you do if the guy you just picked up on the side of the road told you that he was going to kill you? It's just a matter of when. Maybe you should at least consider killing him first, in The Hitch-Hiker (1953).Roger Corman disciple, Stephanie Rothman decides to keep us in the desert a little longer, as she directs a film that really wants to be arty and erotic. A couple is invited to the desert home of a mysterious woman who has designs on getting both of them in the sack. But wow, it's a little challenging to get interested in the sexuality when the acting is somewhat lacking, to say the least. But hey, if you're into that sort of thing, The Velvet Vampire (1971) may just become a cult favorite for you.Less than a year after we discussed Blood Diner (1987), we thought that we had better check out Jackie Kong's first feature film. Pottsville, Idaho. They love potatoes, but they will sweep away smut. So don't even think about opening that massage parlor in their town! Radioactive toxic waste is fine, though. Until some kid goes missing and becomes a mutated toxic monster that rips off heads and delivers one hell of a heart punch, in The Being (1981)And how many people would guess that The Slumber Party Massacre (1982), written by Rita Mae Brown, was also directed by a woman, Amy Holden Jones? With an escaped serial killer on the loose, stalking teenage girls (but he likes the boys, too), it's not difficult to figure out what that enormous power drill he carries around is supposed to represent. This 80s slasher VHS rental favorite might be a lot more fun than you expect.

One reason I love film festivals is that they celebrate creativity.  So I was honored to be asked to judge Etheria Film Night held in early June in Hollywood.  Etheria Film Night is the world's most respected showcase of new horror, comedy, science fiction, fantasy, action, and thriller films made by emerging women directors. I was also able to attend, and cover, the red carpet festivities to talk to people about horror and horror movies.  The event drew a large crowd with varied interests including films, home haunts, and creepy, corpse-filled magazines (literally!).  In this episode are snippets of conversations with people on the red carpet, including the legendary Roger Corman, Stephanie Rothman, Rebecca McKendry, and Bill Moseley (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and many other films).  Also I talked with some of the directors of the films featured that night, including Tara Price, and the winner of the Jury Prize Bridget Savage Cole.  I hope you enjoy the episode and the energy from the Blood-Red Carpet. The line between zombie and vampire wears thin on Episode 189 of Mail Order Zombie when Brother D takes a look at movies like The Living Dead Girl (dir. Jean Rollin) and The Velvet Vampire (dir. Stephanie Rothman).  Don't worry - while Mail Order Vampire may make a return appearance at some point, Brother D isn't going all bloodsucker on the MOZ Family; the review of The Velvet Vampire is part of this week's Palette Cleanser along with the second half of the review of The Collective, Vol. 4.  On the straight-up zombie front, D reviews Zombie A-Hole (dir. Dustin Mills), and he's joined by Miss Bren, Need-a-Nickname Scott, (Missing-a-Moniker) Tracey and other members of the Mail Order Zombie Family to talk about ParaNorman (dir. Chris Butler, Sam Fell).  The Feedback Discussion is at the end of the episode, and the Zombie Beat is at the beginning of the episode after a rambling show introduction in which Brother D announces a contest, talks briefly about an upcoming comic book convention, talks about the Facebook page, and sends a special shout-out to any podcasters based in the Pacific Northwest.INTRO (00:00) ZOMBIE BEAT (09:07) THE LIVING DEAD GIRL (23:39) THE COLLECTIVE, VOL. 4 (33:35) THE VELVET VAMPIRE (47:21) ZOMBIE A-HOLE (59:02) PARANORMAN (1:14:08) FEEDBACK (1:39:42)Mail Order Zombie Facebook Group - http://tinyurl.com/facebookmozMail Order Zombie Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/mailorderzombieEmail us at MailOrderZombie@gmail.com or call us at 206-202-2505!ParaNorman sneak preview from Comic Con 2012 - http://youtu.be/peuS6UlIJ4gJABB pictures - http://www.jabbpictures.com/Cheezy Flicks - http://www.cheezyflicks.comRose City Comic Con - http://www.rosecitycomiccon.comFamily Movie Night podcast - http://blog.fmnpodcast.com/Like the Mail Order Zombie Facebook Page - http://www.facebook.com/MailOrderZombieA.
