Build Muscle at and age with KAATSU Blood flow restriction can be used as a treatment to improve muscle strength or skin tone, increase joint range of motion, and decrease pain levels at any age. Sound too good to be true? It's NOT. Join me and Steven Munatones, CEO and Co-founder of KAATSU to get the lowdown! The CEO and Co-founder of KAATSU, Steven Muñatones had the goal of launching KAATSU globally. In 2014, his dream came true when he introduced KAATSU to the Department of Defense, NASA, CIA, FBI, dozens of NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and MLS teams, and over 80 universities. Today, Steven has taught KAATSU applications and benefits to thousands including Navy SEALs and Olympic gold medalists as well as people in their 80's and 90's. With KAATSU, Steven has been able to enable many different people from wounded warriors and paraplegics, to Olympic and professional athletes to rehabilitate more quickly, effectively and conveniently. He has seen KAATSU enable older, sedentary Baby Boomers to improve their blood circulation and muscle tone. After Steven experienced a widowmaker heart attack in 2016, he utilized KAATSU himself as cardiac therapy, proving his confidence in the blood flow restriction (BFR) modality. If you're a regular listener of this show, you know we're big fans of building muscle over 50. As Dr. Gabrielle Lyon tells us, muscle is the organ of longevity. Muscle helps keep us functioning at a high level as we age, it gives us a lean toned body, and we know that generally speaking, more muscle means a faster metabolism which means more calories burned per day. But gaining muscle can be difficult. It requires some form of resistance training – typically with weights. It requires progressive overload, and it requires us to fuel ourselves properly to create an environment conducive to muscle growth. But what if there was a shortcut, a hack so to speak? What if there was something we could do – not to replace strength training – but to complement and enhance the hard work we do in the gym that required very minimal additional effort on our part? Sound too good to be true? Stick around, we're gonna deep dive into this technology and show you exactly how to build and keep muscle as you age. My guest today is Steven Munatones. Stephen is the CEO and co-founder of KAATSU which is a pioneer in the blood flow restriction market. Steven has introduced KAATSU successfully to collegiate and professional sports teams, branches of US military, and as you'll soon hear – to a large population of people just like you and me. Steven is an accomplished athlete himself. He was a NCAA Division I water polo player and swimmer, he's a Guinness World Record holder, inductee in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and the Ice Swimming Hall of Fame, and the recipient of the Poseidon Award from the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He coached the USA Swimming national team at 9 international competitions, including 4 world championships, served as an NBC commentator at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and founded WOWSA, the World Open Water Swimming Association.  Join us today as Steven shares exactly how we might harness blood flow restriction technology for recovery, rehabilitation, performance, and longevity. I started our conversation by asking Steven how he got interested in blood flow restriction. Website - https://www.kaatsu.comInstagram - @KAATSUglobalFacebook - @kaatsuYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/KAATSUGlobalLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/munatones/Email – info@kaatsu.com Ready to transform your body and your life? I am introducing to you something that you either never heard of, or don't know much about. And that's blood flow restriction training also known as BFR training. It sounds scary, restricting the flow of blood in your body. Why would you do that? Well, the list is long. I personally do it, because as we lose our estrogen with menopause, we find it so much harder to build muscle as we age. And it's not to be a body builder. It's to NOT be frail. It's to bounce back when we fall. And if we do get injured, we can keep our muscle mass to recover faster. But there is so much more to BFR and we take a deep dive into it all with my guest Steven Munatones who is the CEO of the Rolls Royce of BFR bands called KAATSU. Steven is American, but spent a lot of time in Japan where he met Dr. Yoshiaki Sato who invented the original BFR Kaatsu bands back in 1966 to heal people with all kinds of ailments. For years Dr. Sato alongside cardiologists at the University of Tokyo Hospital tested and researched the product with over 7,000 cardiac rehab patients. Steven decided that the world needs to hear more about BFR and went on to co-found Kaatsu Global with Dr. Sato. Now, doctors, athletes, the military, body builders, patients in recovery, biohackers and even octogenerians are going crazy for Kaatsu because it can be used to help build and maintain muscle, improve stem cell concentration, boost testosterone and collagen, lower neuropathic pain, improve brain health, blood circulation and bone health.  There is so much to unpack here, but in this episode we concentrate on building and maintaining muscle for women going through menopause…and also talk about the beauty benefits too. Research, equipment, and protocols are the three things that differentiate this method of blood flow restriction training from the others…    My guest this week is Steven Munatones, CEO & Co-founder of KAATSU Global, Inc. In this episode, Steven and I discuss how KAATSU differs from other blood flow restriction products, how KAATSU can be effective for pain management, and the benefits of using KAATSU to increase athletic performance. We also get a little deeper into some of the protocols, and discuss different use cases.   Steven Munatones has launched new products, services and technologies in the U.S. over the last 20 years. At TOTO Frontier, he licensed TOTO's sanitary ware technologies outside of Japan. At RealLiveSports, he designed and marketed the ESPN Play by Play, a 2006 Toy of the Year. At Aruze Gaming America, he launched hybrid slot machine reel technology in the gaming industry. At the World Open Water Swimming Association, he utilized 9 years of national team coaching to help shape and promote the new Olympic sport of marathon swimming. The Harvard graduate and certified KAATSU Master Instructor co-founded KAATSU Global with Dr. Sato, the Japanese inventor of KAATSU, to introduce next-generation KAATSU equipment.   What we discuss: 00:01:02 The distinction between KAATSU and other blood flow restriction products  00:07:53 The origins of KAATSU  00:11:47 The body's hormonal response to blood flow restriction  00:19:21 How KAATSU is supporting brain health  00:22:22 Why amputees can benefit from using KAATSU 00:32:07 Using KAATSU to manage arthritis and joint pain 00:40:48 The benefits of using KAATSU for athletic performance 00:58:57 How KAATSU can help build muscle mass 01:03:04 The best place for people to go for different types of protocols   Key Takeaways: KATSUU is a Japanese word made out of two characters: “additional” and “pressure”. While we refer to these devices as “blood flow restriction” devices, the goal of KAATSU is to provide additional pressure to allow blood to flow into the small areas in your capillaries normally, and then slow it down temporarily. There are several different ways you can use KAATSU to improve performance, including using it for warm up, for peak performance, in the cyclical mode, and in the constant mode. Each of those applications has a different impact on your physiology. Since most of the hormonal release of the human body happens while we're asleep, using a very light application of KAATSU can help you fall into REM sleep quicker, and can keep you there longer. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training, which Dr. Mercola perceives to be the greatest innovation in exercise training in the last century, was developed in Japan by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato in 1966. There, it's known as KAATSU, which means "additional pressure." KAATSU was brought to the U.S. just over a decade ago by Steven Munatones, after he completed a 13-year mentorship by Sato.

He founded the World Open Water Swimming Association, the Oceans Seven and is a marathon swimmer, water polo player, commentator, race director, coach and recent winner of the annual SCAR race held in Arizona (more of that anon in the chat). He needs no introduction to anyone connected to the sport. It's an honour to welcome him onto the show. Enjoy!!
