This episode is brought to you by LMNT and Fatty15. By conservative estimates, over half of Americans suffer from insulin resistance—a pathway that can lead to numerous chronic diseases. Fortunately, this is not a one-way street; we have the power to change course and protect our long-term health. Today on The Dhru Purohit Show, we bring you a special compilation episode featuring Dhru's conversations with leading experts on the dangers of insulin resistance. Dhru sits down with Kristin Kirkpatrick and Dr. Ibrahim Hanouneh to discuss an epidemic affecting one in four people: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its connection to insulin resistance. Kristin and Dr. Hanouneh highlight the most significant risk factors for fatty liver disease, including metabolic dysfunction and diabetes. They also delve into how ultra-processed foods, excessive sugar consumption, and sedentary lifestyles contribute to the rise in NAFLD cases. Additionally, Dr. Morgan Nolte explains why weight gain and insulin resistance are becoming more prevalent and shares actionable strategies to improve our relationship with insulin. She breaks down how insulin resistance changes as we age and emphasizes the transformative power of optimal fiber intake, quality sleep, stress reduction, and strength training in maintaining metabolic health and achieving an ideal weight. Kristin Kirkpatrick, MS, RDN, is a celebrated author, speaker, and accomplished dietitian with over 25 years of experience. She is a dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic Department of Wellness & Preventive Medicine. Dr. Ibrahim Hanouneh, MD, is a gastroenterologist and hepatologist specializing in liver disease. He served as Chief Gastroenterology Fellow and associate staff at the Cleveland Clinic and later contributed his expertise to Minnesota Gastroenterology and Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Dr. Morgan Nolte is a board-certified clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy. She recognized a need for preventative education and care that focuses on reversing risk factors instead of just treating symptoms. That led her to focus on developing online courses and coaching programs that help adults reverse insulin resistance for long-term weight loss and disease prevention. In this episode, Dhru and his guests dive into: Why we need to focus on insulin resistance (00:00:05) Biggest warning signs of fatty liver disease (2:04) Role of the liver (6:48) The pathway that leads to fatty liver (9:53) Myths about fatty liver and the major culprit of fatty liver disease (13:12) How non-alcoholic fatty liver gets in the way of our long-term health and chronic inflammation (18:32) Why insulin is crucial (25:06) Why insulin resistance changes as we age (31:27) Toxic traits that damage mindset (39:31) Pillars of nutrition (46:00) Optimizing muscle mass for those in the healthy baseline (51:51) Importance of sleep on your appetite (55:46) Strength training and stress management for optimal insulin levels (1:02:51) Also mentioned: Regenerative Health Book This episode is brought to you by LMNT and Fatty15. Today I welcome back clinical specialist Dr Morgan Nolte, in this episode we talk abouthow to achieve your weightloss goal. In reality the mindset needed to achieve a weightloss goal is the same as the mindset needed to achieve any goal. Crucially we explore the mindset that we need in order to achieve any goal including weight management goals. Discover the habits needed to bring about sustainable behaviour change such as committing to a goal, embracing discomfort, tracking activities, and controlling the controllables and engaging in what is called autosuggestion, and if that term is new, guess what you're already engaging in autosuggestion when it comes to your negative habits. This is a masterclass in how to attain any goal. Dr Nolte spells out exactly how to go about achieving an aim from moment to moment and day to day. I guarantee you'll get lots out of this episode especially if you have struggled in the past with turning things around whatever your goal has been. www.zivli.com Music : Credit purple planet music / @drmorgannolte Order Happy Habits for Mind and Body Audiobook: https://rb.gy/h5jjjg Order Kindle copy of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://rb.gy/jiojcc Order US paperback of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://rb.gy/sirste Order UK paperback of Happy Habits for Mind and Body : https://rb.gy/jtfea5 Listen to all previous podcast episodes of the Happy Habit Podcast via these podcast platforms : Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast... Angela is joined by Dr Morgan Nolte, a geriatric physical therapist, to explore the critical topic of insulin resistance and its widespread impact on health. Dr Nolte shares her journey from traditional physical therapy to focusing on disease prevention, emphasising the importance of understanding insulin's role in blood sugar regulation. She also delves into the differences between insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes, highlighting the often-overlooked significance of fasting insulin levels KEY TAKEAWAYS Insulin resistance is a condition where the body's cells become less sensitive to insulin, leading to higher insulin levels and eventually resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. It is a precursor to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, affecting a significant portion of the adult population. Regularly checking fasting insulin levels is crucial, as it can indicate insulin resistance long before blood sugar levels rise. A fasting insulin level below six is considered optimal, and awareness of this can help individuals take proactive steps toward lifestyle changes. To improve insulin sensitivity, a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein and healthy fats is recommended. Focus on whole foods, limit high-sugar fruits, and ensure adequate protein intake (30-40 grams per meal) to support muscle growth and metabolic health. Strength training and regular physical activity are essential for improving insulin sensitivity. Engaging in moderate to high-intensity strength training at least twice a week, along with walking after meals, can significantly help regulate blood sugar levels. BEST MOMENTS "Insulin is a hormone made in your pancreas and it has several vital roles in the body, but the one that we're focusing on today is blood sugar regulation." "88% of adults, at least in America, have some degree of insulin resistance, even if they don't have full-blown prediabetes or type 2 diabetes." "I think the fewer the spikes, the better. Realistically, how we eat in our culture today is purely a matter of commerce and the benefits of being able to ship food." "When stress is up, a few things happen. Number one is your cortisol goes up. Cortisol is one of your stress hormones." In this episode, Dr. Morgan Nolte opens the show by diving into her background and why she is so passionate about disease prevention. [00:40] Dr. Nolte Speaks About Her Background and The Importance of Disease Prevention Dr. Nolte is a geriatric physical therapist by trade. Plus, she has additional training to be board certified in geriatrics. Dr. Nolte would see people in their sixties who were acting like they were eighty. The care and services that Dr. Nolte would provide seemed like it was too little and too late. Insulin resistance is at the core of all the conditions that Dr. Nolte treats. The longer you hold off making those lifestyle changes, the harder it will be to get healthier. The longer we continue to make poor decisions, the easier those decisions are to maintain. [10:15] The Role of Insulin In Health and Disease Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas. It is a good thing and a vital hormone. Insulin is an anabolic hormone, meaning its role is to build things up. Insulin's role is to move blood sugar, or blood glucose from your bloodstream, into your cells to be either used as energy right away or to be stored in the form of muscle glycogen, liver glycogen, adipose tissue, or fat tissue. Exercise will reduce blood sugar. You shouldn't focus on calories. Instead, you should focus on blood sugar for weight loss. When insulin continues to go up, your cells will become resistant to that insulin. Eventually, you will start to see blood sugars go up. Remember, 88% of adults have insulin resistance. If you learn how to live a low insulin lifestyle, you'll lose weight and prevent disease. [22:50] Your Metabolism Will Slow Down With Chronic Caloric Restriction A fascinating study showed chronic caloric restriction slows your metabolism for six months to four years. When you return to your old eating habits, you'll gain weight because your metabolism has slowed down. Many doctors don't have the capacity and the resources to help their patients with nutrition. Overall, we need more proactive measures, and we need to take responsibility for our health. [25:40] Stop Asking This Question: “How Do I Lose Weight?” We are asking the wrong question. We shouldn't ask, “how do I lose weight?” In reality, you should be asking, “how do I lower insulin?” The quality of the questions you are asking will determine the quality of your life. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, that takes an entirely different approach and mindset. Anyone who has been in the coaching business understands that mindset trumps everything else. If you don't have the mindset in place, all other strategies will fall short. [27:25] Autosuggestions Can Help You Live A Healthy Lifestyle Here are some books that will help with your mindset: Think and Grow Rich: https://www.amazon.com/Think-Grow-Rich-Napoleon-Hill/dp/0449214923/benazadi-20 Atomic Habits: https://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Habits-Proven-Build-Break/dp/0735211299/benazadi-20 Traction: https://www.amazon.com/Traction-Gino-Wickman-audiobook/dp/B00A9Z973M/benazadi-20 The systems that Dr. Nolte learned to implement in her business are things like being accountable, being productive, and being focused. These are exactly the same systems that her clients need to stay focused and accountable towards their new healthy lifestyle. For Dr. Nolte, living a healthy lifestyle is automatic to her. She wants to help her clients automatically live a healthy lifestyle too. [44:45] Why Does Intermittent Fasting Work So Well For The Gut? To learn more about fasting, Dr. Nolte recommends Cynthia Thurlow's work: https://cynthiathurlow.com/ It's important to let your digestive system have a break. Fasting will let your digestive enzymes do their job. Does this sound familiar? You find yourself overweight – maybe 10, 20 or 30+ pounds overweight and you decide to do something about it. So you steel your resolve and you go on a diet. It's a tough road, but you're tougher, you're up for the challenge. You cut out your beloved pizza and ice cream, eat more salads, and stay disciplined and on track – until finally you hit your goal weight. You congratulate yourself for having the fortitude to accomplish your goal. But then a year or so later, you somehow find yourself right back where you started… or worse yet, maybe even a little heavier than your pre-diet weight. So you start the cycle all over again. The fact is that most of us have at some point in our lives have had personal experience with the difficulties of maintaining a healthy weight. But why is that? I mean, in this day and age of such fantastic technological advancements and so much scientific knowledge, why is this so hard? We often hear experts say that it's simple math – simply eat fewer calories than you expend and you'll lose weight. And while that's a great starting place, that advice has been around forever and as a population we're becoming more overweight – not less. Despite all of the nutritional advice, tips, tricks, diets, pills, detoxes, supplements, and fads many of us are still struggling with maintaining a healthy weight. My Guest today is Dr Morgan Nolte. Dr Morgan started her professional career as a geriatric physical therapist, but in seeing that the vast majority of her patients were overweight and obese, decided she wanted to dedicate her life to helping people maintain a healthy weigh. Today Dr Morgan is a weight loss coach, an entrepreneur, and the creator and host of the Reshape Your Health podcast. And as you'll hear in this insightful interview, Dr Morgan has a very clear and concise message on how we can combat the obesity epidemic. In this episode we are going to deep dive into the harmful effects of insulin resistance and its role in weight gain. Dr. Morgan shares her four pillars of living a low insulin lifestyle, and give us some great practical “hacks” that can help us learn how to live a lifestyle that supports a healthy body weight for the rest of your life.
