The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL

To help kick off our look back at Season 6 of Saturday Night Live, we talk to one of the cast members from that season—Denny Dillon. In addition to being the very first "new" cast member to say "Live from New York," Denny is also one of the few performers to work with all three Executive Producers of the show—Lorne Michaels, Jean Doumanian, and Dick Ebersol. But Denny's connection to SNL goes back well before that infamous 1980-81 season. She talks about meeting Gilda Radner before the show even premiered and shares her experiences as a special guest on the third ever episode back in 1975. In addition, we discuss her contribution to Anne Beatts' book "Titters" as well as returning to Studio 8H to be on a children's show prior to starring on SNL.Denny recounts the extensive audition process she went through at Saturday Night Live, being selected as the last female cast member (beating out a future Oscar winner), and discusses the highs (and lows) of that difficult season. She recounts the uphill battle everyone faced with both the fans and the press while experiencing the thrill of live television and forming bonds that would last for decades.Denny recounts many highlights from the season including some favorite hosts, musical guests, and sketches. She discusses her tight relationships with fellow cast members, working alongside hosts such as Elliott Gould, Ellen Burstyn, and acting in her favorite sketch of the season with Bill Murray. She also gives a behind-the-scenes look at what things were like when Jean Doumanian left the show and Dick Ebersol (and Michael O'Donoghue) took over.---------------------------------Subscribe & Follow today! And follow us on social media: Twitter: @NR4PTProject Instagram: @nr4ptprojectBluesky: @nr4ptproject.bsky.socialFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com

Nick welcomes Dr. Jason Barr, Associate Professor of Music at Glenville State University, to talk about the history of music on Saturday Night Live, with a focus on the legendary live band that has been part of the show since it debuted in 1975. They get into the origins of Studio 8H, including the technology and its early days as home to the NBC Symphony Orchestra, along with a look at both the original SNL band and the current lineup. Nick and Jason also highlight past and present band members you may not know but should, along with musicians who have played with SNL over the years. It's a deep and fascinating conversation about one of the most important elements of the show, the music that has helped define it for decades. [Ep 173]

SNL veteran Vanessa Bayer takes listeners behind the curtain of Saturday Night Live, revealing her impressive near-record of making it through six full seasons without breaking character on camera. Bayer shares the story of how Fred Armisen finally broke her streak during his hosting appearance at the end of her sixth season, and discusses memorable sketches including the divorce lawyers dance scene with Paul Rudd that became an instant classic, the Santa Baby video with Ryan Gosling, and falling out of a plane with Amy Schumer. She reveals how her iconic "best friend" Weekend Update characters with Armisen originated from off-camera improvisation during rehearsal days, demonstrating the organic creative process that produces SNL's most beloved recurring bits.Beyond SNL nostalgia, Bayer discusses her meaningful partnership with M&M's for Red Nose Day, describing the transformative experience of coaching Chicago teenagers in comedy at Second City—the same legendary venue where she got her start. She shares the powerful moment of watching these young performers walk off stage on a natural high after telling their stories and getting laughs, using comedy as an outlet to support children in poverty through the Red Nose Day initiative. Bayer also previews her Netflix movie "Ibiza" about three women on a European adventure, reflects on finally getting sleep after leaving SNL's grueling schedule, and discusses navigating the next chapter of her career while doing college tours and exploring new television opportunities.

Picture this. It was my first job in radio. I decided to do a series about women and comedy. The idea coincided with the birth of Saturday Night Live. The first interview: Gilda Radner. We sat on the floor, right across from Studio 8H where the show is still performed. Gilda told me all about what life is like when you become an overnight star. Then I talked to Jane Curtin about people asking her for autographs when she walked her dog. Somehow, in those years I missed talking to Laraine Newman. But I finally just caught up with her. And she's the star of this episode. It's an outrageous conversation about SNL and all the things that have happened to her since. Plus, you'll hear what Gilda and Jane had to say from those early day sit-downs. "Now What?" is produced with help from Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.

Nick dives into the long tradition of breaking on Saturday Night Live—those unexpected moments when cast members or hosts crack up mid-sketch and the fourth wall comes tumbling down. While frowned upon in the show's earliest years, breaking eventually became part of the fun, and no one was guiltier of it than Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz. This episode revisits some of their most infamous crack-ups, from “The Leather Man” to “Aquarium Repairmen” to the unforgettable “Sadam and Osama.” Nick also plays clips from a Tonight Show interview where Fallon and Sanz laugh about their reputation for breaking and share behind-the-scenes stories from their time at Studio 8H. To round things out, Nick goes back to the very first major break in SNL history, when Candice Bergen lost it during a 1976 sketch, proving that sometimes the funniest moments are the ones that weren't planned. [Ep 144]

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick revisits one of the most notorious episodes in Saturday Night Live history, when Frank Zappa hosted during Season 4. The night has gone down as one of the worst ever, thanks largely to Zappa's smug, condescending approach and his open disdain for the format. From his monologue, where he flatly admitted to reading cue cards, to his constant mugging and deliberate attempts to derail sketches, it was a train wreck in slow motion. To try and salvage the episode, the show even shoehorned John Belushi's Samurai Futaba into one of Zappa's musical performances, but it wasn't enough. The result was a bizarre, uncomfortable mix of Conehead antics, a drugged-out Halloween sketch, and one very annoyed cast. Nick shares behind-the-scenes stories, testimonials from people who endured that rough week, and even Dana Carvey's later parody of Zappa's failed hosting gig. While Zappa remains a legendary musical innovator, his time at Studio 8H was such a disaster that he was banned from ever returning. [Ep 143]

SNL continues to roll out the heavy hitters for Season 5, bringing two absolute legends to Studio 8H as Eric Idle returns for his fourth (and sadly final) hosting stint joined by the unequaled Bob Dylan as musical guest. If that wasn't enough, Andy Kaufman is back on the show as well! Can a lineup like this help Saturday Night Live get back on track?  Well…Idle was very sick (true story), Dylan sings songs from his new Christian album (also true), and Kaufman wrestles a woman on live television. None of these things helped.Despite a 100+ fever, our host soldiers through with admirable determination, giving everything he's got to salvage the show. But still, the absence of two cast members remains sorely missed (and another still looks annoyed to still be there).  And yet, there are a few bright spots as the show gets meta, one of the all-time great hosts cameos again (two weeks in a row!), and there is some wonderfully silly absurdness you can only get when a member of Monty Python hosts the show.---------------------------------Subscribe today! Alongside the audio clips, Nick offers behind-the-scenes trivia, explores the origin of the character, and reflects on Hader's brilliant tenure at Studio 8H. From smacking Jesse Eisenberg in the face to completely derailing scenes with Anne Hathaway and Emma Stone, Herb Welch was an old-school reporter who had no business still being on air—and that's exactly what made him unforgettable. It's a nostalgic, hilarious tribute to a character that represents everything unpredictable and perfect about live sketch comedy. [EP 132]

Nick revisits Joan Rivers' one and only stint as host of Saturday Night Live, a wild ride that aired in April 1983. At the time, Rivers was a comedy powerhouse—known for her sharp tongue, fearless punchlines, and an endless supply of Liz Taylor jokes. While the sketches written for her weren't exactly Emmy material, she powered through with her trademark grit and timing, turning even the clunkiest bits into something watchable. Highlights include a surreal moment where Joe Piscopo plays Joan in drag, and Eddie Murphy shows up as himself—but aged several decades. Rivers' monologue, packed with self-deprecating zingers, was easily the strongest part of the night and got big laughs. The episode also featured a solid cast lineup, including a young Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Brad Hall, Gary Kroeger, and Mary Gross doing their best with a strange assortment of sketches. Nick also shares clips and insights from a rare interview with Joan Rivers herself, where she opens up about her hosting experience—and why she was never invited back. Turns out, being a comedy legend doesn't guarantee a return ticket to Studio 8H. [EP 129]

On April 19, 1980, legendary character actor Strother Martin hosted Saturday Night Live—and delivered a surprisingly strong performance. Best known for his unforgettable roles in films like Cool Hand Luke, True Grit, Slap Shot, The Wild Bunch, Up in Smoke, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Martin brought his unique presence and versatility to Studio 8H for one memorable night. Nick looks back at this fascinating episode, featuring a clever Cool Hand Luke parody and a mix of strange, sharp, and hilarious sketches. Along the way, he shares behind-the-scenes stories about how some of the show's most unusual comedy came together. You'll hear standout moments from cast members Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Harry Shearer, Garrett Morris, Paul Shaffer, and more—plus material that feels just as politically relevant today as it did in 1980. It's a fun, deep dive into a night when one of Hollywood's most underrated talents—often mistaken for Tennessee Williams—stepped into the world of live sketch comedy and left his mark. [Ep 119]

“Now What?” is produced with help from Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. On Saturday, May 15th, 2004, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen had a decision to make: they could either attend their senior prom or host the season finale of Saturday Night Live. As you probably guessed, they chose SNL.And as a consolation for missing their high school prom, Jimmy Fallon, Will Forte, Maya Rudolf, and Amy Poehler gave Mary-Kate and Ashley a miniature prom during their 5 minute monologue on the stage of Studio 8H. The rest of the night featured Mary-Kate and Ashley playing paparazzi, selling perfume, selling backpacks, spoofing The Swan, enduring Jimmy Fallon, and playing as angsty teens on home video. So today, Becca and Lani give their review of the episode sketch by sketch* and discuss what the significance was of Mary-Kate and Ashley hosting Saturday Night Live. We are also painfully reminded of just how long ago 2004 was with how wildly racist, sexist, and homophobic so many of the jokes are.
