Succession creator Jesse Armstrong is back with Mountainhead, a new movie with characters who are just as wealthy, powerful, and insecure as the Roy family. Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef and Cory Michael Smith star as four tech moguls gathering for a low-key guys' weekend of poker. But business and unchecked, overinflated egos quickly lead them all down a very dark path. Programledare: Lisa WallProducent: Saman Bakhtiari
This week two dramas about sisters and the much anticipated movie from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. • Sirens (Netflix, 5 episodes) Watch for the exploration of the relationship between working-class Buffalonian Devon DeWitt (Meghann Fahy) and her younger and somewhat more successful sister Simone (Milly Alcock). Stay for the husband and wife dynamics between socialite Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore) at the lavish beachside estate she shares with her billionaire husband, Peter (Kevin Bacon). • The Better Sister (Prime Video, 8 episodes) A thriller that centres around Chloe (Jessica Biel), a high-profile media executive (think Anna Wintour), who lives a picturesque life with her handsome lawyer husband Adam (Corey Stoll) and teenage son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan) by her side while her estranged sister Nicky (Elizabeth Banks) struggles to make ends meet and stay clean. • Mountainhead (Max, movie) A story about four very nasty tech tycoons, good friends on the surface but cutthroat underneath, who gather for a poker weekend at the luxurious home of the poorest of them, the one who is only worth half a billion dollars! Jason Schwartzman is Hugo, the host and creator of a meditation app, angling to get one of his friends to invest a billion or so in his business. Steve Carell is Randy, the oldest of the group, whose contacts in Washington, DC can influence the military and the country's power grid. Diagnosed with incurable cancer, he can't believe money can't fix that, but hopes to cheat death by getting his friends to create an artificial intelligence able to upload a human brain. Ramy Youssef is Jeff, whose company has a super-efficient AI, and who appears to be the most humane of the four (which isn't saying much). Cory Michael Smith is Ben, the owner of a social media app called Traan, and the world’s richest man. Also this week – James visits Clarkson’s pub which features in the new season of Clarkson’s Farm (prime Video) and Andrew has watched new And Just Like That (Binge).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Four tech CEOs, drunk on power, reunite at a mountaintop home amid a global economic crisis they might be partially responsible for. "There is a power that is purchased by money, where they don't have to apologize for their behavior," Cory Michael Smith says about playing Venis in Jesse Armstrong's HBO film Mountainhead (May 31). "A lot of these guys probably grew up not being the coolest kids in class." Part of the struggle for Smith was finding the space between drama and comedy. "Figuring out the balance was a little nerve-racking." Plus, Smith was excited to work with Armstrong. "I watched Succession, like most actors, with awe and envy, thinking, 'Wow, that's the luckiest cast.' Being invited into his [Armstrong's] feature directorial debut is so dreamy." Smith was also eager to work alongside Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman and Ramy Youssef. "I'm really grateful that I feel like I didn't f*** it up...this felt like a monstrous opportunity, and a monstrous opportunity to fail and have to really consider going back to school if I just humiliated myself." Jesse Armstrong, the mastermind behind Succession, is stepping into feature filmmaking with an untitled HBO movie, and he's bringing Steve Carell along for the ride! The film, set against a global financial crisis, follows four billionaire buddies and boasts a stellar cast, including Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef. Filming kicks off this month in Park City, Utah, with a spring release planned. Armstrong, who co-wrote In the Loop, reunites with Succession alums behind the scenes. With capitalism as its battleground and HBO's backing, this project promises to be another sharp, satirical knockout!

Saturday Night Live has been a staple for all of us. This year, the late-night institution is celebrating its 50th season, so we thought, why not honor SNL with a review of Jason Reitman's amazing comedy film SATURDAY NIGHT? The original cast of Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and John Belushi are played by near-no-name actors Ella Hunt, Emily Fairn, Kim Matula, Lamorne Morris, Dylan O'Brien, Cory Michael Smith, and Matt Wood, respectively. SATURDAY NIGHT received the top honor for Best Ensemble Cast by the Music City Film Critics' Association awards, and it's easy to see why.

"Saturday Night" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for Jason Reitman and Gil Keenan's screenplay, the real-time editing of the film's narrative, and the performances from the ensemble cast, which consists of primarily young and up and coming talent in Hollywood. Three of the film's stars, Gabriel LaBelle (Lorne Michaels), Cory Michael Smith (Chevy Chase), and Tommy Dewey (Michael O'Donoghue), were all kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work on the film. First, we have my interview with Golden Globe-nominee LaBelle, followed by Will Mavity's interview with Cory Michael Smith, and then we finish with my chat with Dewey about both Reitman's film and the Sundance indie film "Your Monster." Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to rent digitally from Sony Pictures Releasing and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards in all eligible categories. “There are practical paths and intuitive paths with each character,” says Cory Michael Smith at the start of this episode, and it's a recurring theme throughout. The talented actor was Riddler on the series “Gotham,” a standout in three Todd Haynes films, and now plays Chevy Chase in "Saturday Night.” On this episode he details the careful process of studying Chevy clips for months before diving into the script. He talks about the importance of “ridding myself of any hint of fraudulence,” why it's so important for him to show up with lots of ideas, how being intentional with his career choices allows him to better serve the work, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Jason Reitman returns to discuss the making of “Saturday Night,” his new film spanning the 90 minutes leading up to Lorne Michaels' first episode of “Saturday Night Live.” The film is at the front of the pack for this year's best ensemble featuring Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, Cory Michael Smith and many more taking on the parts of Lorne Michaels and his motley crew of writers and comedians. Reitman talks about creating the film's score live on set with Jon Batiste, interviewing everyone at the historic taping before writing the script, the real rush of going live on “SNL” and more. On episode 249 of the AwardsWatch Podcast it's another all editors edition as yours truly, Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello are packed and ready to head to mountains of Colorado for the 51st Telluride Film Festival with special guest Christina Birro of Pop Culture Confidential. As Telluride famously does, the actual lineup of films isn't released until the day of the festival (August 30) but with Venice, Toronto and New York announcements and designations of films as a 'world premiere,' 'international premiere,' 'North American premiere' or 'Canadian premiere' we have a pretty good idea of many of the films we'll be seeing, with all important world premiere titles that we'll likely be seeing before anyone like Edward Berger's papal thriller Conclave (Focus Features) starring Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow and Stanley Tucci, Michael Gracey's Robbie Williams biopic Better Man (Paramount Pictures) with the UK star playing himself, Jason Reitman's Saturday Night (Sony Pictures), telling the story of the first night of SNL in 1975 with Gabriel LaBelle, Dylan O'Brien, Rachell Sennott, Cory Michael Smith and Willem Dafoe, Malcolm Washington's adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Piano Lesson starring Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Deadwyler and John David Washington and RaMell Ross's Nickel Boys (Amazon MGM), adapting Colson Whitehead's Nickel Boys with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Hamish Linklater and more. We also expect a healthy selection of Sundance and Cannes features to make their way to Telluride for a fall resurgence like A Real Pain, Emilia Pérez, Anora, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and more. Telluride medallions are also a topic of conversation with three traditionally up for grabs. Based on the expected lineup we think it will be Jason Reitman, Angelina Jolie and Samuel L. Jackson but there's a handful of possible contenders here. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h10m. Cory Michael Smith sat down with us to discuss the process of taking Georgie from the script to the screen. We talk about how he wanted to be sightly aggressive when we first meet him because up until that point no one other than Julianne Moore's character had challenged Natalie Portman. However, Smith is quick to add that is sad and Georgie is a mix of both emotions as he tries to go on in life. We also discuss his singing, favorite scene, and award buzz. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Shamindri De Sayrah Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance, a married couple buckles under the pressure when a Hollywood actress meets them to do research for a film about their past. **May/December is currently in theaters. Q&A on the Netflix series Transatlantic with actors Gillian Jacobs, Cory Michael Smith, Lucas Englander, Ralph Amoussou, Deleila Piasko, and Amit Rahav. Moderated by Bilal A. Qureshi. An American journalist, during 13 months spent in France in 1940-41, manages to arrange safe passage out of France and on to the US for more than 2000 refugees who are in danger of losing their lives.
PopaHALLics #98 "Steve Was Wrong"In a rare instance, Steve admits he was wrong about the merits of a TV show. But which one? We also review "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," "Abbott Elementary," "Transatlantic," "Dream Horse," and take another look at "Wednesday," "Ted Lasso," "The Mandalorian," and the novel "The House Across the Lake."Theaters:"The Super Mario Bros. Movie." In this animated action comedy, plumber Mario must stop villain Bowser from conquering the world. With the voice talents of Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and more.Streaming:"Abbot Elementary," ABC, Hulu, and other streaming services. Quinta Brunson created and stars in this mockumentary sitcom about a teacher at a poorly funded, predominately black school in Philadelphia."Transatlantic," Netflix. This "historical fiction drama" chronicles a journalist's quest to arrange safe passage out of France for more than 2000 refugees in danger from the Nazis. Gillian Jacobs, Cory Michael Smith, and Corey Stoll head the cast."Wednesday," Netflix. Smart, sarcastic, and a little dead inside, Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) tries to solve a spooky mystery at Nevermore Academy in this "horror comedy" from twisted mister Tim Burton."Dream Horse," Hulu. This 2020 movie is based on a true story. A small-town Welsh bartender (Toni Collette) enlists the help of friends and neighbors to breed, sponsor, and race a horse named Dream Alliance. "Ted Lasso," Apple +, and "The Mandalorian," Disney +. Steve feels both these popular shows have lost their way a bit during their third seasons.Books:"The House Across the Lake," by Riley Sager. This best-selling suspense novel is set up like Hitchcock's "Rear Window": A drunken actress spying on her neighbors at a remote lake suspects a software entrepreneur is trying to murder his wife, a former supermodel, for her money.

Pena Dura brought hard times for Riddler and Jim. Riddler struggles to find out who is controlling him. We find out that Jim's buddy Eduardo is here to take over Gotham not save it. Jim is not onboard with Theresa Walker's dark plan for the city. Hard Reboot for Riddler's Brain: ©Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX Riddler is confronted by Jim and Eduardo, but due to sharp thinking and traps he makes it out. The GCPD and Delta Force announce to the city that Ed was behind the attack on Haven. The citizens of Gotham proclaim the hard sentence of death on Ed. They are hunting him down. He gets blindsided and knocked out. A crazy family decide to electrocute him via car. Ed pulls a Brer Rabbit and tricks his way out, but not before a few shocks. They bring back a memory of Oswald saying he was going to fix Ed. Ed slips into city hall. Here Ed and Oswald have a powerful talk. This scene was well written and amazingly acted. Oswald says that he was trying to help Ed and got Hugo to save him. If anyone is controlling Ed it would be Hugo. They both pledge to confront each other openly and face to face. The status of their friendenemy relationship has been restored. Ed heads to Sirens and seeks info from Babs. She hears him out and decides to help. She tells Ed where he can find the men to take him to Hugo Strange. Ed sneaks in to Hugo’s lab in a bodybag. Hugo is surprised and intrigued. Riddler wants to know how Hugo controlled him. It seems the not so good doctor, fixed Ed and put in a control chip in his head. But the control was left to others. Hugo paralyzes Ed and reboots the chip. A Hard Break Between Friends: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX Jim and Harvey tracked down the dealer that sold the RPG. He is watching the movie "Tangier Incident." (Thanks to our buddy and S1 actor Joe The Cop a.k.a Thomas Calderone for that info.) They turn out to be outgunned. Then the calvary er, I mean Delta Force shows up. Eduardo Dorrance (Shane West) is in charge and saves Jim's bacon. Theresa Walker sent Delta Force in to retake the city. They start to work with the GCPD to take back the city district by district. Jim and Eduardo loose Riddler, but renew their friendship. Eduardo and Jim served together and saved each other’s lives. It seems like hope has come to Gotham. They get word Ed was seen at city hall. Harvey and Eduardo take out Oswald’s men and take him in. Oswald reasons with Jim and give him the scoop on Hugo and Ed. In turn Jim lets Oswald go. Jim and Eduardo track down Ed and Hugo just in time. Ed is unfrozen and spills the beans about the chip and being controlled. About that time, Eduardo pulls out the remote and freezed Ed. Theresa Walker wants to take the city and wants Jim to be the head, but Jim has to kill Ed to do it. Jim fakes out Eduardo and escapes. Eduardo sends Ed after him. Hard Times For Bat & Cat: ©Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX Bruce is filled in on the Delta Force arrival by Alfred. Bruce is taking what is happening to Selina personally and he wants to fix it. Alfred tries to break him out of it, but it does not work. Bruce finally finds Selina at Sirens. Babs and the ladies are cheering Selina for killing Jeremiah. Bruce and Selina talk at the bar. He is trying to have her see the light. He says he knows her and this is not her. She says she was there when his parents were killed and she did nothing. That is who she is. It is a hard time for this couple and things don’t look to get better any time soon. It Is Hard To Kill This Joker er Jeremiah: ©Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Jeff Neumann/FOX Jeremiah wakes up in the tunnel. He is sore and stitched up. Ecco make armor for him, but he had to convince Bruce and Selina he was dead. Ecco and the crew have broken through. The tunnel comes up through the batoffice. Jeremiah and Ecco enter Wayne Manor via secret access through the fireplace. He has had a doctor do surgery on a couple to look like Mr. & Mrs. Wayne. It looks like Jeremiah is going to use them to shatter Bruce’s world. Closing Thoughts: Pena Dura was not as hard on us as Ruin, but it set up a great deal of the season. The acting between Robin Lord Taylor and Cory Michael Smith was outstanding. These two have played off of each other for 5 seasons and it shows. BD Wong tore up his two short scenes. He seems to relish and enjoy his role as Hugo. Hard times are ahead for Gotham, but we cannot wait to see what is next! News: 13 Stitches: Gordon assembles an unlikely team to protect Gotham from Eduardo Dorrance (guest star Shane West) and his Delta Force. Just as Lee Thompkins resurfaces, Barbara reveals shocking news that will change Gordon’s life forever. Meanwhile, Selina and Penguin team up to outsmart fellow villain Magpie (guest star Sarah Schenkkan) in the all-new “13 Stitches” episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Feb. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. It's all come to this. The Gotham Season 4 finale but thankfully not the Gotham Finale. We discuss our Top Five case notes in our Gotham Season 4 Episode 22 Review of "No Man's Land". As always make sure you've watched the episode before listening to the podcast. Synopsis for Gotham Season 4 Episode 22 Review No Man's Land Podcast Directed by: Nathan Hope Written by: Seth Boston and John Stephens As the army comes in to take control of Gotham and the city continues to be evacuated, Jeremiah Valeska (Cameron Monaghan), back behind bars at the GCPD, warns a skeptical Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) of more bombs and destruction to come. Meanwhile, Jim is kidnapped by The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) and narrowly escapes death after Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin) convinces Ed Nygma to leave Gotham. But Ra’s Al Ghul’s (Alexander Siddig) plan swings into action as a bomb detonates killing the Mayor of Gotham and forcing Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) to leave a hospitalised Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) to confront Jeremiah at the G.C.P.D. But he in turn is kidnapped and taken to Ra’s where he is rescued by an unexpected team, Barbara Kean (Erin Richards), Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas), Alfred Pennyworth (Sean Pertwee) and Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) who arrive, saving Bruce and killing Ra’s Al Ghul. As Bruce is saved Jeremiah's bombs destroy every bridge out of Gotham, reducing the city to lawlessness. As the city is carved up between competing criminal gangs Penguin takes his revenge out on Tabitha Galavan for the death of his mother and we say goodbye to Butch Gilzean/Solomon Grundy (Drew Powell). Finally Bruce Wayne is forced to make a life changing decision and to come to terms with his future in a Gotham that is cut-off from the outside world. In the penultimate episode of Gotham season one we discuss Episode 21 of Gotham The Anvil or the Hammer on Episode 46 of Gotham TV Podcast. This episode was great, we loved it, Gotham The Anvil or the Hammer was in parts gruesome, edgy, sassy and fraught with danger for all the main protagonists. Written by Jordan Harper and directed by Paul A. Edwards this is definitely one of the best episodes of the season so far. The Ogre (Milo Ventimiglia) reveals his true intentions to Barbara (Erin Richards) as he slowly, but surely begins to emotionally break her! With these disturbing developments the G.C.P.D's investigation intensifies as Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) track him to an out-of-town location after a surprising personal testimony from an employee of the Fox Glove nightclub, a previous haunt of Jason "The Ogre" Lennon. As they close in on the Ogre, Barbara's life and the lives of people close to her are in deadly jeopardy. All the while, Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) begins to move his pieces on the chess board that is Gotham as he seeks to begin the turf war between the rival gangs of Don Maroni (David Zayas) and Don Falcone (John Doman). As the chaos begins so Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) finds himself in turmoil as he must come to terms with revelations about his father - Thomas Wayne; and Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) must clean up after his actions from the night before, but all with a sly sense of humour and, of course, a clue!. The outro music for this week is again the The with their fantastic tune "Boiling Point" someone loves their UK indie music over in Gotham we suspect Danny Cannon and Bruno Heller. Join us again next week for the season finale of Gotham as we discuss Episode 22 All Happy Families Are Alike.
