Paring Down: Realistic minimalism to live more intentionally
How do you know an idea is true? That's a pretty big question, but I've found that the best way to know if an idea is worth exploring is to find out how long it's been around. Because, as Mark Twain famously said, "There's no such thing as a new idea." Sage wisdom usually comes in the form of a repetitive idea that respected spiritual and thought leaders have landed on independently over hundreds - even thousands - of years. Today on the podcast, we welcome Suzanne Johnson, whose book Vital Simplicity pulls on the work of Charles Wagner - who authored The Simple Life in 1895. Living simply as a means to internal fulfillment is a timeless truth - a conclusion that dates back as far as 600 BCE. If that's not motivation to at least explore the principle of living with less...I don't know what is! Limiting beliefs keep us from achieving our own potential. In this episode of Owning Your Legacy, I sit down with my dear friend, Dr. Suzanne Johnson, who is the vice president of consumer R&D for the North American division of McCormick and Company.Suzanne and I have been each other's advocates through many of life's challenges: deaths, births, loves, kids, and career challenges. We talk about keeping it real and not letting the titles and hierarchy of the corporate worlds we live in keep us from finding our voice and our value. As a matter of fact, we want to transform that corporate culture to one of openness, vulnerability, advocacy, and transparency. We have both aspired to leadership positions in the food industry—an industry we are proud to be a part of and have immense passion for. It is ripe with opportunity to enrich the lives of many. Enjoy this conversation where we discuss the learnings through our trials and tribulations that taught us to never abdicate our power or our values because we felt unsure of our leadership. In fact, that humility is power. Gail Scott, Edlong's Director of Administration, adds perspective to the conversation around the intention and role of leadership that is profound. “You do not have to be in power to be a leader.” Truer words were never spoken. She describes her journey towards finding her voice at the table. Thank God, she did. It is so needed and so insightful. Suzanne Johnson is a 48 years old mother of 4. She started Keto in June 2018 and since then, she's down 65 pounds...in less than a year! Suzanne was a yo-yo dieter since she was a teenager. She's tried everything from taking laxatives in college, dexatrim, weight watchers, low fat, low calorie, and even liquid diets. Like a lot of yo-yo dieters, if you can name a trendy diet, she's tried it. Suzanne had her gallbladder removed a few years ago, but still decided to move forward on a high fat keto plan. She found my Coach Me Course & My Big Fat Life Transformation book, which also led her to TC Hale, where she took the digestion course and enrolled in the Keto Decoded Membership. These courses helped her learn how to test for chemistry imbalances she needed to improve to balance her body. She also began digestive supplements to make the weight loss process easier by improving her digestive symptoms. During this episode of Chat the Fat, we discuss Suzanne's journey from yo-yo dieter to how she ended her struggle for good with a real food keto diet. Even with YouTube and the internet, It's really hard to believe that all humans aren't awesome at everything. One thing that nearly all of us need is help on training ourselves to be financially secure. There are countless books, webinars and weekend conferences on saving, preparing for life and increasing stability in our lives through the way Americans spend money. Problem is, a lot of that stuff is motivated by the presenter and lacks deployable advice and feedback on effort. Suzanne Johnson has carved a really valuable spot for herself in our economy: a financial coach. Just like a dietician or athletic trainer, she and her business, Grace Financial Coaching specialize in helping people achieve confidence through training their habits. It's that simple. The story on how she got there is pretty cool. As a young executive in the shopping mall and commercial real estate industry, her life lessons with internal success and failure - and very real debt present a great story. Mike and McD are intrigued to learn from Suzanne on how careers and happiness do matter. We're not sure if Grace Financial Coaching is accepting new clients - but this episode is worth a listen and we're sure as hell accepting new listeners. On March 27, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom granted clemency to 26 Californians, four of whom were clients of the California Innocence Project (CIP): JoAnn Parks, Suzanne Johnson, Rodney McNeal, and David Jassy. In the midst of the pandemic, this is a rare outbreak of mercy, and Amanda Knox and Christopher Robinson reached out to Justin Brooks, Director of the California Innocence Project, for his thoughts on Governor Newsom's decision.
Imagine a city rising from the fields of Suffolk County in the early 20th cenutry, a wooden metropolis covering almost 20,000 acres. It has its own post office, theater, library and fire department. The place could fit close to 40,000 people with room for 15,000 horses. Imagine that and you've got Camp Upton. Today our guests Suzanne Johnson and David Clemens discuss the history of Camp Upton, the vast military training camp in Brookhaven that served the US Army in World War I and II. We focus on their new book, Camp Upton, from Arcadia Press which features images of the life of the camp throughout 1917-18 and beyond. Many of the images are drawn from the Longwood Public Library where both Suzanne and David were directors. You'll hear about the 77th Division, the Harlem Hellfighters, Irving Berlin, and the amazing feat of raising an army to fight The War to End All Wars. Payment systems, mobile banking, Apple Pay, Google Pay. The term "internet banking" now sounds like 8-track banking. However, there is still a sizable group of people in our banking audience that remembers and prefers face to face transactions. Join us as we talk to Suzanne Johnson, Senior Talent Developer with GTE Financial about a new training program they are launching to help repair the relationships that are sometimes strained in the face of new and rapidly evolving technologies.
The Romance Bookmark with Renee Bernard welcomes Suzanne Johnson! Below is some information on her very cool new series. Be sure to read it. There may be a test later! Suzanne Johnson aka Susannah Sandlin is a great read in any world so be sure to take a peek! ROYAL STREET (Sentinels of New Orleans, Book 1) As the junior wizard sentinel for New Orleans, Drusilla Jaco's job involves a lot more potion-mixing and pixie-retrieval than sniffing out supernatural bad guys like rogue vampires and lethal were-creatures. Her boss and mentor, Gerald St. Simon, is the wizard tasked with protecting the city from anyone or anything that might slip over from the preternatural beyond. Then Hurricane Katrina hammers New Orleans' fragile levees, unleashing more than just dangerous flood waters. While winds howled and Lake Pontchartrain surged, the borders between the modern city and the other world crumbled. Now, the Undead and the Restless are roaming the Big Easy, and a serial killer with ties to voodoo is murdering soldiers sent to help the city recover. Gerald St. Simon has gone missing, the wizards' Elders have assigned a grenade-toting assassin as DJ's new partner, and an undead pirate Jean Lafitte wants to make her walk his plank. The search for Gerry and the killer turns personal when DJ learns the hard way that loyalty requires sacrifice, allies come from the unlikeliest places, and duty mixed with love serves up one bitter gumbo. Out now!
Guests include NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock who discusses the latest news from around the league, including if it is time to hit the panic button in the ‘city of brotherly love' after three games. Next up is fitness guru/volleyball champion/model Gabrielle Reece. Reece attended Florida State University the same time as NFL Networks very own Deion Sanders. So needless to say she has some great stories of 'Prime' and their days in Tallahassee as Gabby brings it on this edition of the podcast. Hopefully we can have her back on before she heads to the islands for the winter to catch the big waves with her husband, surf legend Laird Hamilton. In case you missed it be sure to go back and check out this weeks earlier podcast featuring Vikings All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson, Country Music star and Tennessee Titan fan Tim McGraw, and Suzanne Johnson, wife of Jets owner Woody Johnson.
