Together, they shared insights about our new Global Crisis and Sustainability subject as an alternate stream to I&S in Grades 9 and 10. James highlighted the new Global Crisis and Sustainability program, also known as GCNS, "showed a different way of thinking" to students and emphasized the importance of proactive inquiry and skill development. He provided an example of how he focuses on the connection between hazards and climate change while his colleague, Rob Clark, emphasizes mitigation strategies. Although they teach different aspects of Climate Change, their combined efforts provide students with a comprehensive understanding of complex global issues.   Grade 9 student Mia shared her journey of choosing GCNS after attending an informative introductory session at the end of Grade 8. She said she enjoyed the freedom and flexibility it offers. Mia believes that when students are genuinely interested in a topic, they have the opportunity to learn and absorb information more effectively. Sam, a Grade 10 student, expressed his enthusiasm for the creative activities in the GCNS course, such as conducting different research and creating maps. He liked the course's student-centered approach, stating that it allows individuals to pursue their interests. Sam particularly enjoys mapping and reveals his consideration of making Geography one of his high-level DP courses. EP193: The International Year of the Fruit and Vegetable with Kelly Bristow and Jenny Maloney of Bayer

“We all need to work together across the entire value chain, even as consumers, to make a difference to ensure that fruit and vegetable consumption really becomes a part of everyone's diet.” Kelly Bristow (39:39-40:00)   The UN declared 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables. With this declaration, the UN gifted Bayer with an invitation to raise awareness to the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption and the role it plays in human nutrition, food security, and health. Bayer wanted to take the year as a lens and bring together the important steps across the value chain all the way from seed to ultimately what ends up on consumer's plates. To help increase awareness, consumption, and even enhance flavor of fruits and vegetables.    Kelly Bristow is the Science and Nutrition Partnerships Manager at Bayer and mom to two young kids. She meets with outside organizations and stakeholders to bring together influential people to think globally about how we can impact fruit and vegetable consumption. Jenny Maloney is the Strategic Account Manager for the Americas for Bayer Vegetable Seeds all while being mom to three young girls. Jenny and Kelly, along with Lori, put together a virtual event called Beyond Farm to Table: A Seed's Journey to Your Plate. Bayer wanted to have a holistic look at the food chain, not only looking at it from a grower or retailer perspective, but also a consumer perspective. Bayer pulled together three leading experts in this space. Lori was there moderating the event. They also had David Bell, CMO at Long Vine Growing Company, Chad Street from the Albertson's Company, and Jana Parker from IRI Fresh. All of these different perspectives made for such a great, well-rounded, interactive event.   For Kelly, it was so great to get three different people in different parts of the value together and seeing their different perspectives. One really does play off the other. It's not often you get to see the whole process in one event. It was interesting to Kelly to hear from Jana about what are in shopper's carts. What produce are shoppers buying and what's accompanying it. It was great to hear that shoppers are buying an increased amount of produce and some ways to help improve that consumption even more.   For Jenny, it was interesting to hear David Bell talk about the journey of a tomato. Starting with seed selection, propagation, transferring to a grow house after eight weeks, How they're picked by hand then sorted for quality, and then sold to consumers. The other thing that stuck out was Long Vine Growing Company's Sustainability Program. One of their facilities is located adjacent to a natural gas power plant. They use energy from that plant to power their own greenhouse. Any water that isn't used by the pants is recirculated. Over 90% of their water is recycled. They are ultimately aiming to grow with care.   What Chad really highlighted was the thought and precision that goes into the placement of every piece of produce in the store. There's a whole team behind the scenes that makes it easy to shop for your produce. He was able to shed a lot of light on the behind the scenes work.    “The way we changed our shopping habits, the way we use produce differently, the way we bought produce differently. That all changed in 2020 and we're still sorting out what that's going to mean for the rest of 2021, 2022, and beyond.” Jenny Maloney (33:50-34:07)   Taste, convenience, and price are big motivators for consumers buying produce, but seeing Jana's data to back this up was really eye-opening for Kelly. We see that people are cooking at home more than ever, but they're still looking for the convenience factor. Even though people are spending more time at home, they are still looking for their fruits and vegetables to be easy and quick to buy and make at home. It was interesting to see this data through the lens of the pandemic.   This International Year of Fruits and Vegetables really helped Bayer shine a spotlight on the importance of developmental goals and looking at giving greater visibility to small scale growers. They brought more awareness to food security, nutrition, and even looked at scalable production and consumption. Everyone across the entire value chain needs to work together, even as individual consumers, to make a difference and ensure that fruit and vegetable consumption really becomes a part of everyone's diet, promote healthy habits, and fight against hunger and malnutrition.   You can find the entire event on Seminis YouTube Channel at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTYjV21I2Io  How to get involved: Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business! Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enIn a time when intergalactic superheroes dominate global box offices and capture the imaginations of millions of people around the world, what do we see when we look back at the science fiction of the Cold War? What is gained and what is obscured by comparing the films and literature created by the two superpowers of the early Space Age? And what did it feel like to watch those movies and read those books back then? What's the legacy of these remarkable creations? To explore this subject and attempt some answers, “The Naked Pravda” turned to Anindita Banerjee, an associate professor of comparative literature at Cornell University, where she chairs the humanities concentration in the Environment and Sustainability Program and wears several other academic and administrative hats. Dr. Banerjee explained the pitfalls of Americans' Hollywood obsession and described her own introduction to Alexander Belayev's 1928 science fiction adventure novel, “Amphibian Man,” which Soviet filmmaker Vladimir Chebotaryov later adapted into the 1962 Soviet blockbuster motion picture. Over the past two decades, the word sustainability has become a hot topic of discussion. More and more businesses, including the craft beer industry, have begun taking new approaches in developing methods to increase their efficiency, while taking on an ecological responsibility. Having a sustainability program is more than just a fad or buzz word to grab your attention and make you feel good. When a sustainability program becomes part of your organizations brand essence, it has the ability to improve your brand image, all while creating a competitive edge. This happens because today's customers are more aware of environmental concerns and they are more apt to buy from an organization that is known for practicing sustainability. During episode three of The Craft Lyfe, we get to chat it up with the Head of Operations at Saltwater Brewery, Justin Jeffers. In this episode of The Forum Podcast, Chris Jones (Spectra Diversity LLC) shares insights on the effectiveness or "stickiness" of diversity and inclusion trainings and how post-training sustainment is key to making new inclusion behaviors "stick." What happens when a diversity and inclusion or implicit bias training session is concluded? Anything? In a recent survey, half of the D&I consultants and trainers reported that they did not use any method to sustain the lessons learned during their training. About one-third used a participant-generated action plan. On average, it takes more than two months before a new behavior becomes automatic—66 days to be exact. Post-training sustainment is key to making new inclusion behaviors “stick.” This session will look at how three year-long sustainability programs, with a range of budget implications, were created: An online cinematic microlearning program, “Creating a Mindset for Change” by GWT Next An online interactive microlearning program, “Powering Inclusive Cultures” by Spectra Diversity A workbook-based sustainability program, “Lead Like an Ally” by Pivot Point Hands-on creation of a module is a session activity. Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Mathis Wackernagel, Ph.D., is co-creator of the concept of the ecological footprint and Executive Director of the Global Footprint Network. He is also an author and/or contributor to over fifty peer-reviewed papers, numerous articles and reports, and various books on sustainability that focus on the question of embracing limits and developing metrics for sustainability including Our Ecological Footprint: Reducing Human Impact on the Earth, Sharing Nature's Interest, and World Wildlife Fund's International's Living Planet Report. He previously served as the director of the Sustainability Program at Redefining Progress in Oakland, CA, and directed the Centre for Sustainability Studies /Centro de Estudios para la Sustentabilidad in Mexico, which he still advises. Wackernagel is also an adjunct faculty member at the Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment (SAGE) of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.The goal of the Global Footprint Network is to advance the science of sustainability. It is an accounting tool that looks at how many ecologic resources we have and how much we use to feed ourselves, absorb our wastes, house our buildings, etc. Calculated in acres, it asks the question "How many biologically active acres does it take to produce what you personally consume or your country consumes?". This is then compared to how many resources are available in your country, region and the world. Doing this we can see to what extent we use resources within the limits of what the earth, or particular region can renew. The Global Footprint Network has a web-based "footprint calculator" for people figure their own personal footprint. In a world of ecological constraints, ecological efficiency becomes increasingly important. People need to understand the interconnected nature of our daily choices and behavior and begin to reduce their footprint and use resources more efficiently. Wackernagel provides a concise overview of how this concept of ecological assets and liabilities, along with efficient resource use, is beginning to change the way individuals, local communities and nations are now planning for the future. He calls for true honesty about our footprints and their implications, including the example of his own somewhat large footprint created by his global consultation and educational activities. His ultimate goal, and the Global Footprint Network's main mission, is to build bridges between government, business, NGO's and academia-- to have a common understanding and language of our planetary resource constraints and how to live within them.Recorded at the Ecocity World Summit in San Francisco, April 2008
