At the top of the episode, I share a candid conversation with my good friend, Gail (who you might remember from episode 165: Preparing for Aging Parents).  We talk about Gail’s wake-up call about finances, I talk about my own relationship with money,  and why I believe in the value of having a financial roadmap like Dave Ramsey’s 7 Baby Steps. I always knew that there were similarities between people’s relation with money and their relationship with clutter, and Rachel’s book really gets you thinking about your WHY, (just like we teach here!)  If you are struggling with clutter, I encourage you to read Rachel’s book to see if you can understand your unconscious motivations for how you view and use money. Let's face it, today there are many people struggling with their finances.   People have lost their jobs, some have been furloughed, some have had their income drop and this pandemic has impacted so many in such a way that has left them feeling fearful, uncertain, anxious and stressed on what's to come.   So today, I wanted to bring on the show an expert that will help you better your financial situation right now.    My guest today is Rachel Cruze —  an American author who specializes on the subject of personal finance. Her book Smart Money Smart Kids, co-authored with her father, Dave Ramsey, reached number one on The New York Times Best Seller list in 2014. She's also the host of the Rachel Cruze show.   We are going to talk about budgeting, family and of course finances. And with the difficult situation happening around us, Rachel will share some of her tips and strategies on how people can effectively manage their money and be financially secure until they live a life that is debt-free!   So if you are one of the many who got affected financially during these difficult times, and you are having a hard time with planning and handling the budget for yourself and your family, this is the perfect episode for you! What's it like growing up with Dave Ramsey as a Dad?   Rachel's Mom and Dad, obviously, were really intentional with teaching them how money works, but it was not something that they obsessed over.   They were never given an allowance. They were always on commission. “You work, you get paid. You don't work, you don't get paid.”   What can Rachel say about people falling into this comparison trap with impulsive spending, and how to prevent it?   Social media has become so normalized, like it's a part of our everyday life.   People are on it constantly and the hard thing is mostly what people see are the best parts of everyone's life -- great vacations, great meals that are being cooked. And that's how we've been for almost a decade of seeing these things over and over. And assuming that's how life should be.   And if people are not meeting that, then the avenue of debt is right there for us to walk right down and get it because we think it's normal.    We have to shake out what is normal, because what's normal is “broke”, we're finding that 78% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.   The Four Walls   Rachel points out that during these tough times, it's most important to take care of the four walls that surround you which includes:   Food Shelter Utilities Transportation   Tune in to this episode and digest what Rachel said about these 4 walls. You will surely gain something that is really helpful and might change your perspective when it comes to handling money!   Rachel will also talk about how she manages to protect her energy and make sure that she's taking care of herself to be a beacon of light to everybody.    And just like everyone else, Rachel also faced some adversity in her life! You better listen to this as she tells her story and what she learned from it. Words of wisdom from Rachel:   “Money is just a tool to create a life that we love. But it is not life. We're not working just to make money.”   “Control what you can control and don't make decisions based out of fear.” Connect with Rachel:   Website: https://www.rachelcruze.com/   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rachelramseycruze   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rachelcruze   Twitter: https://twitter.com/rachelcruze YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/rachelcruze   Connect with Doug   Website: www.dougbopst.com/   Instagram: @dougbopst   Facebook: Doug Bopst   Private Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/690686891674188   Website: www.dougbopst.com/   More on Earth Echo Foods/Cacao Bliss:   www.earthechofoods.com/dougbopst   Use Promo code "Doug" at checkout to receive 15% off your order

Business owners are often unaware that the money they allocated for their personal finances and the ones they’ve allocated for their business overlap, and this is where financial problems usually occur. In addition, business owners often put on appearances which do not reflect their real financial status which shouldn’t be the case because every business weathers different seasons differently. Having an understanding of how money moves and how it bleeds into one aspect of your life into another is important for entrepreneurs and their success. In this episode of Powerplayers in Business and Life, Adrienne Richardson is joined by Rachel Cruze where they talk about how to get smart with money and how to make smarter business decisions. They discuss the importance of focusing on and embracing the season that your business is in the value of having an emergency fund, and the difference between money management and personal finance. I am convinced that contentment is something we have to fight for and pay attention to. It's not something that comes naturally in our culture, when everywhere we look, we are hearing silent messages of you need this, you don't have enough, you have to buy this to be happy. Today, I'm talking with Rachel Cruze all about contentment, and fun fact, this episode was recorded before she had her baby boy, and now she's a proud mama to two girls and a boy, just like me! Rachel is known for financial wisdom and her “work,” but I was so excited to chat with her about how she balances her work and her life as a wife and mother, and how contentment plays a part in both! As a #1 New York Times best-selling author, host of The Rachel Cruze Show, and The Rachel Cruze Show podcast, Rachel helps people learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She’s authored three best-selling books, including Love Your Life, Not Theirs and Smart Money Smart Kids, which she co-wrote with her father, Dave Ramsey. Picture this: You’re booked to speak on a college campus. The auditorium seats 1,000, but only three students show up. Yes, that’s 997 empty seats. And the icing on the cake? The three students who bothered to show up only did so for the extra credit. Ouch. Or how about this: You’re speaking at a conference for a bank, and even though there are enough seats for a few hundred people, only two show up. TWO! Are you cringing yet? To make matters worse, one of them talks—yes, talks, not texts—on her cell phone during your presentation. Oh, and that other attendee? He promptly falls asleep and snores the whole time. No, I’m not describing my worst nightmares. Unfortunately, both of those things actually happened to me. I mean, I can’t make this stuff up! And, y’all, I have stories like these for days from the years I spent speaking in high school cafeterias, family reunions, libraries and strip malls. As an aspiring professional speaker like I was at the time, it would’ve been easy to get discouraged in those situations. And believe me, some days were harder than others. But really, it’s natural to feel disappointed when reality doesn’t measure up to your expectations—like when your business isn’t as big, impressive or successful as you thought it would be today. Patience can be hard, right? I get it because I’ve been there. But you know what? Even in that season when nobody showed up for my speeches, when every audience was tiny, I always brought the same level of passion and energy. Related: Play to the Size of Your Heart Why? Because I believe there is something sacred in every season we go through. In other words, there is training in the trenches. It’s during those hard seasons that something happens in you that can’t happen any other way. It’s like a rite of passage. So, instead of wishing away what you’re going through right now or focusing on what’s next, I encourage you to find contentment in the now. I know that can be challenging when you’ve got big dreams. But I promise, it’s possible to be content with where you are today without giving up on your goals—it’s a both/and situation. That could look like super-serving the 200 Instagram followers you have today while working to turn that into 200,000. Or giving a heartfelt speech to five people while working on the marketing plan to grow your following. It’s both being content and striving for more. Related: Dream Bigger for Your Business I’ve told you this before, but it’s worth repeating. If you’re not faithful with what you have and where you are today, God can’t trust you with more. That’s exactly why—no matter if I’m speaking to two people or 2,000—I bring my all to every single speaking engagement. Don’t despise your small beginnings, embrace them. Practicing contentment makes it much easier to hear what God is teaching you in each season. Here are three ways you can start doing that right now: Three Ways to Practice Contentment  1. Control Your Thoughts You have more power over your mind than you think. I know this is hard, especially when you’re scrolling Instagram and see that one of your girlfriends has a brand-new kitchen or is on a fancy vacation. Do you know what you’re doing in that moment? You’re comparing someone else’s highlight reel to your current reality. Stop doing that! Comparison is a recipe for discouragement and resentment. Related: The Benefits of Practicing Gratitude 2. Focus on What You Have When you look at what you already have, it is so much easier to have an attitude of gratitude. I love how 2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to take every thought captive to Christ. When you feel comparison creep in, kick those thoughts to the curb and focus on what you’re grateful for instead. The truth is, you and I have more than most people. We live in the greatest country in the world with more money, resources and technology than we know what to do with. So stop focusing on what you wish you had. Focus on what you do have, and I bet you’ll find it difficult not to be content. 3. Write It Down There is something so powerful about writing down things like what you’re grateful for or the goals you’re striving towards. It’s as if by writing them down, you’re elevating their importance so they can take on a life of their own. That’s because when you put something down on paper, you remove it from the battlefield of your mind and bring it into the real world. How to Be More Content with Rachel Cruze  My guest today is Rachel Cruze! She’s the best-selling author of Love Your Life, Not Theirs and Smart Money Smart Kids. She’s also a speaker, host of The Rachel Cruze Show and one of my very best friends. Rachel is passionate about helping people balance spending and saving money. But everything she teaches about money centers around contentment. That’s because mismanaging your finances is often a symptom of a deeper issue: discontentment. In her work, she has found that content people are more likely to win with money because: They’re more inclined to save money They’re willing to sacrifice to get out of debt They live generous lives On today’s episode, we talk about: What contentment actually is and isn’t A real formula you can use to quit comparison How to be grateful—even on the days you don’t feel like it I’m so excited to share that Rachel has just released a beautiful tool to help us all on this journey. Contentment and FOMO  Time management is something I struggle with every single day—yes, even as a business coach! We all have 24 hours in a day, but somehow that never feels like enough. And social media has made this even harder. FOMO, anyone? Related: Excuses That Steal Your Time Thanks to FOMO, it’s so much harder to say no. We say yes to all the invitations because if we don’t, we’re afraid we’ll regret it when we see everything we missed out on all over Instagram. But, guess what? Contentment is actually the cure for FOMO! When you’re content where you are—whether that’s at home in your pajamas on a Friday night or at the playground on a Sunday afternoon—you have the confidence to say no. You can easily turn down invitations without fear because you know you’ve said yes to what really matters to you. Y’all, here’s the thing: We can’t do it all. Spending time trying to keep up with other people’s demands and expectations is just plain exhausting. I want you to not just find contentment in your heart, but also find contentment in how you manage your time. This week, I challenge you to spend your time only on what’s most important to you. #AskChristyWright On today’s #AskChristyWright segment, we talk about how to raise your prices without losing your current customers. Many children grow up with no clue about how money works—what it means to save for something they want, how to spend wisely, how work can translate into money and why we must give to others in need as part of our life's journey. Somehow, in our busy lives, discussions about money get pushed off until later. But of you think about it, when kids don't know how money works when they are younger and under your roof, it can set them up for some big money mistakes when they are away at college or off on their own. So “money talks” are some important discussions we all need to have with our kids. My next guest knows more than a thing or two about these money talks as she's been having these conversations as long as she can remember with her own parents—that's just part of growing up Ramsey. America's trusted voice on money and business, Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert and extremely popular national radio personality. His seven bestselling books—Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover, EntreLeadership, Dave Ramsey's Complete Guide to Money, The Legacy Journey, and Smart Money Smart Kids—have sold more than 10 million copies combined. By age 26, he had established a $4 million real estate portfolio, only to lose it by age 30. Using the wisdom he gained, Ramsey rebuilt his financial life and now teaches others how to be responsible with their money, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, retire with dignity, and give generously to others. In 1992, Ramsey founded The Lampo Group, LLC to provide financial counseling, through various means, to anyone who wants to better understand the principles of proper money management. Twenty years later, the company has grown from a card table in his living room to more than 600 team members and has been voted one of the “Best Places to Work” in Nashville numerous times. In 2014, the company rebranded to become Ramsey Solutions as part of an ongoing plan for growth and longevity. Ramsey runs a multi-million-dollar company with a nationally recognized brand, but he defines success by the number of lives changed through his message of hope. Ramsey offers that life-changing message as host of a nationally syndicated radio program, The Dave Ramsey Show, which is heard by 13 million listeners each week on more than 600 radio stations and digitally through podcasts, online audio streaming, and a 24-hour online streaming video channel. In 2009, he was honored as a National Association of Broadcaster's Marconi Award winner. Ramsey was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2013 and the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2015. He is the creator of Financial Peace University (FPU), a program that helps people dump their debt, take control of their money, and learn new behaviors around money that are founded on commitment and accountability. More than 4.5 million people have attended Financial Peace University, Legacy Journey, and Smart Money Smart Kids courses at their workplace, church, military base, local nonprofit organization, or community group. Ramsey offers his message of hope through a variety of mediums and products. More than a million people have attended a live event, including more than 40,000 EntreLeadership participants. His high school and college curriculums are offered in more than 16,000 schools and educational institutions. The Dave Says syndicated column is available to more than 8 million readers monthly. Why it is Important for Kids to Learn Wise Money Management Skills I have to confess, though I feel God has given me some pretty good insights into bringing up kids, if there is a subject that I'm least confident in, it would be the subject of money. We can teach a million different subjects to our kids, some they will use and some they won't, but all of our kids are going to deal with money. So, parents, we'd be wise to teach and model good money management to our kids. Someday it might be us who has to depend on our children's money management skills to get us through those twilight years. If you don't think you have much wisdom and insight to teach your kids about money, then listen closely to this podcast. Today's program is going to give you some practical insights that will help you and your kids deal with those dead presidents in a way that will keep everyone smiling while also bringing glory to God. Today, Rachel Cruze and I discuss parenting and money management as we cover the following topics: How Smart Money Smart Kids can help your teen be confident in managing their finances. The important role the parents play in helping their kids learn about finances. Why managing money should be common sense. Chores could set your child up for success. The role personalities play in money management. Three principles you should train your child. Why you need to teach your child to spend money. When a child should get a checking account. Our guest this week is Rachel Cruze. She is a #1 New York Times best-selling author and personal finance expert. For Rachel Cruze, growing up as the daughter of Dave Ramsey was a powerful character building experience that helped her establish good habits early in life. She wrote about those lessons in her book Smart Money Smart Kids, co-authored by her dad, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times best-sellers list.  Rachel is now a seasoned communicator and presenter who has been speaking to groups as large as 10,000 for more than a decade. She uses those early experiences from growing up in the Ramsey household to educate America’s students and young adults on how to handle money and stay out of debt.  Three takeaways from this interview: Rachel didn’t always do right by her money. She shares her biggest money mistake. Rachel talks about how having a higher income doesn’t always fix problems. And How to NOT to raise lazy, entitled kids. One of the people I planned to meet at FinCon14 was Todd Tresidder. Mission accomplished! Todd has an amazing story. He went from being a high school entrepreneur and mechanic to hedge fund manager. He found himself "retired" at age 35 after selling the hedge fund business he was a partner in. This was in 1998. Todd has remained retired while riding the ups and downs of the market. Including the tech bubble and great recession. Todd is deliberate and intentional with his decisions. He has used statistical analysis models he developed to make market decisions. Todd makes car buying decisions largely based on the numbers. He can afford to by new. He can afford the depreciation. Yet, most often he has bought used. He doesn't like the idea of wasting money. He also doesn't have his ego tied up in his car. I think you should consider being like this millionaire next door! #152: Rachel Cruze is a speaker, debt-free evangelist, part-time co-host of the Dave Ramsey show, known for being the inspiration behind the book “Careless at the Carnival”, and is soon to be a NYTimes best selling author for a book to be released on April 22, 2014 - Smart Money Smart Kids.  MoneyPlan SOS listeners wanted to know what she thought about these questions: Chris Pilon from Dadrenaline podcast: Aside from not paying commission, what did your parents do when you or Denise or Daniel did not do their chores? Karen Austin posted on Facebook: We have 8 year old twins and they earn money for household chores. We've been heavily focused on savings plus tithing, but feel we need to let them spend a little. Did Dave let you have spending money? Was it a percentage of what she earned?  Garnet Eldred (who shares the same birthday as me) asked: What does she use her 'blow' money on? Stephanie Reed wants to know: When did she start her own budget? And did her parents make her buy her own clothes and toiletries, etc. to help her learn how to budget before she left the nest? If so, what did she think of it and what would she change? Josh Levitt: We all struggle keeping up with the budget, not over spending or some aspect of being financially Smart. What is the toughest part of "sticking to the plan" for you personally? Kim Nice had a bunch of questions, but I only had time for one: What kind of vacations do you go on? Jen McDonough (aka: @TheIronJen): Do you see entitlement in the younger generation as being more or less than the parental generation? Scott Maderer: What is the Number 1 piece of advice you’d give for raising kids that will become great ADULTS?    Special thanks to @MrJoshuaBrown and ArunWisconsin for the 5-star iTunes reviews.   Your next money challenge: Find as many opportunities to show your kids how you SAVE money. The ratio for how many times my daughter sees us spend money to save money is about 1,000 to 1. There are many more opportunities for her to see us pay for something but she never gets to see the money going into our bank account, mutual funds, or 401(k). Some suggestions: Put coins in a piggy bank (I have a coin jar) Take physical dollars to the bank Have them click "send" for your mutual fund or online savings account For more information, visit the show notes at
