Business travel remains one of our largest sources of greenhouse emissions, accounting for 26% of the UK's total emissions. In an ideal world, no one would have to travel to work or events, some might even point to the way everyone adapted in COVID as a prime example of this in practice. However, for many that model of work is not feasible in the long-term. So, how can we reduce this unavoidable stream of emissions? Businesses are starting to take the right steps, however, today's guest is paving the way as a shining example of sustainable business travel and events management.   In this episode, Mel is joined by Christopher Truss, Global Sustainability Director at Reed & Mackay, to discuss their impressive existing ISO Standard portfolio and their journey towards ISO 14064 carbon verification. You'll learn ·      Who is Chris Truss? ·      Who are Reed & Mackay? ·      What are the highlights from Reed & Mackay's latest Sustainability and Responsible Business report? ·      What Standards are Reed & Mackay certified to? ·      What is the demand for sustainability within the business travel and events management sector? ·      Why get ISO 14064 verified? ·      What were the challenges with obtaining ISO 14064 verification? ·      What are the benefits of obtaining ISO 14064 Verification?   Resources ·      Reed & Mackay ·      Reed & Mackay Sustainable and Responsible Business Report 2024 ·      Carbonology   In this episode, we talk about: [02:05] Episode Summary – We welcome today's guest, Chris Truss, Global Sustainability Director at Reed & Mackay, to explore their ISO Standards portfolio and journey towards ISO 14064 verification. [02:40] Who is Chris?: Chris has had over 20 years experience in the business travel industry. He is currently responsible for driving the sustainability agenda at Reed & Mackay, which includes the development of services and solutions that their clients require to meet their own sustainability initiatives. He also manages a wide range of third-party suppliers. A lesser know fact about Chris is in a band, playing the folk fiddle and singing in pubs around Yorkshire. He also plays tennis in the over 45 category for Yorkshire! [04:50] Who are Reed & Mackay? – Reed & Mackay are a global travel management and event management business. They help clients all the way from picking up the telephone and making bookings on their behalf, helping them source appropriate venues for their events and then managing the overall spend, the supply chain and ultimately reporting back to them on what they've been up to and how they can improve their processes and save money. Reed & Mackay are highly regarded for their quality of services, especially within the professional services sector, and they proudly boast a number of large blue chip clients. [05:50] What are some of the highlights in Reed & Mackay's Sustainability and Responsible Business Report? When Chris came into his latest role, he looked to tackle two main points: ·      How can Reed & Mackay operate sustainably? ·      How can we articulate that to our clients? As a result of the work Chris has done, Reed & Mackay have signed up to the United Nations Global Compact and have aligned themselves with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. They have also become an EcoVadis rated supplier and are undertaking their first Carbon Reduction Plan disclosure. From a corporate responsibility point of view, they have made great strides to improve their gender pay gap. They are also ensuring the integrity of their charitable partnerships. [08:00] What are some of the sustainability initiatives that Reed & Mackay have started? Reed & Mackay support a charity called 4Ocean, who are trying to remove as much plastic from our oceans as possible. They selected this charity in particular due to it's global reach, embodying the nature of Reed & Mackay's global influence in 13 countries for the past 10 years. They recognised the need to support a sustainability based charity as corporate travel is highly polluting, so this is a form of taking responsibility and looking at where they can assist to reduce environmental damage. 4Oceans also allows their employees to get involved directly, should they choose to take some time out of the office to help with ocean clean-up. [09:55] What ISO Standards are Reed & Mackay certified to? They are currently certified to: ·      ISO 27001 Information Security ·      ISO 14001 Environmental Management ·      ISO 22301 Business Continuity ·      ISO 9001 Quality Management All of which they have been certified to for over 10 years now! They acted as a foundation for Chris to drive his sustainability agenda. [11:10] How are these ISO Standards managed across the business? – Reed & Mackay have a dedicated Security and Trust team that manage all ISO certifications, in addition to their other responsibilities. All of the ISO Standards are a part of their Integrated Management System, which sits alongside their policies and procedures for the business that are managed by a central team. This has provided them with an invaluable foundation to ensure the delivery of quality services, client satisfaction and continual improvement. [12:45] What is the demand for sustainability within the business travel sector? They are receiving more requirements and requests from clients in regard to their own operational CO2 footprint, which is needed for clients own reporting requirements as Reed & Mackay would count towards many clients Scope 3 emissions. There is also a need for more transparency with carbon reporting, including the use of credible calculation methodology's. The verification of GHG emissions also gives clients more confidence that businesses are doing what they say they're doing. [14:15] What was the main driver behind Reed & Mackay gaining ISO 14064 verification?: While they felt confident in their sustainability efforts up to a certain point, they wanted someone to come in and mark their homework to make sure they were doing the right thing. With the increase in client demand for credible sustainability reporting, it was vital to pursue various CPD disclosures such as EcoVadis and prepare for upcoming legislation like CSRD. To ensure they were in the best possible shape to give the information requested by clients and other stakeholders, they needed am accurate and reliable method of verification, which is what ISO 14064 could provide. [15:40] What were the main challenges in obtaining ISO 14064 verification?: Just getting a hold of the raw data was the most difficult part, although they found it to be a very enlightening experience too. Having to dig to find the right information helped Chris to understand the business better, giving him a greater visibility on where their carbon emissions are coming from and where there are opportunities to reduce those. You have to be very tenacious to get all the necessary data. Chris highlights purchased goods and services data as particularly challenging to obtain due to its granular nature. Now they have been through this process once, they've got a system in place to make data collection a lot easier in future. [18:55] What impact has ISO 14064 verification had on Reed & Mackay?: It's helped from an internal perspective as people now have a greater visibility and understanding of the impact that have on an individual basis. This in turn creates a strong launchpad for their Net Zero strategy. From an external perspective, it's given Reed & Mackay a lot more confidence in their own processes and their ability to work with their clients towards sustainability goals. [20:00] What were the main benefits of getting ISO 14064 verified?: Giving clients, stakeholder and employees confidence: The verification calculation is reliable, and so they can be confident in relaying the facts and figures to interested parties. A great insight: The data has provided huge insights into how the business operates and where it's biggest emissions sources lie. This is vital to know before you take steps to try and reduce your current impact. Ability to create an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan: Once again, with confidence in having the correct data to hand, they are able to formulate an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan which can be realistically achieved. Anti Green-washing: Consumers are crying out for a reliable sign of credibility. Simply having an environmental policy statement may have been enough 10 years ago, but that's not the case now. People expect evidence of your sustainability claims. [21:50] Chris's top tip for anyone considering ISO 14064 verification: Just get started and don't be scared by the process. Though it may seem daunting to start, you will actually be in a much better position than when you started. Having verified data and awareness of where that data comes from and what it means on a larger scale will be vital to looking for opportunities for improvement. So, if you want to improve your sustainability, you just need to get cracking! [23:20] How are Reed & Mackay helping organisations improve the sustainability of their travel?: Reed & Mackay's ambition is to make sure that clients understand the impact of their choices at every single step of their journey. To help, they provide the carbon footprint of every booking they make, whether that be through their site or with a consultant. They also have approval processes built into their systems, which can be based on carbon. For example, if a client doesn't want to take the lowest carbon option on a particular journey, they can add required approval from an additional person within that client's organisation. So it adds a level of accountability over the choices people make. They also provide full reporting on business travel activity and where potential savings have been missed. This is a valuable tool if they need to provide travel data to carbon consultants for example, they'll already have all of those granular reports prepared. These reports will highlight where clients haven't taken the lowest carbon option, i.e. where they could travel in a group instead of individually. Reed & Mackay's intention is to make sure people have visibility of carbon alongside cost so clients can make a fair and balanced decision. Additional services include: ·      Able to set carbon budgets across a business ·      Ability to purchase carbon credits for offsetting purposes ·      Opportunities to mitigate carbon emissions through offsetting, or decarbonise through Carbon Reduction Plans over a period of time [28:50] Chris's book recommendation: His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman [29:15] Chris's favourite quote: You can't measure success if you have never failed – Steffi Graf If you would like to learn more about Reed & Mackay, and their sustainability initiatives, visit their website. The United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative, will officially launch its Ireland network this November at an exclusive event for senior representatives from business, government, academia, and civil society. The launch aligns with new sustainability compliance regulations in Ireland, aimed at accelerating meaningful and sustainable business actions. The network will be officially launched by Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Global Compact, on the afternoon of 28th November at Dublin's Exo Building. High-level representatives from organisations across the Irish corporate sector will gather to explore how ambitious change can be implemented for a more sustainable future in Ireland. Founded in 2000, the Global Compact Network aims to accelerate and scale the impact of businesses by upholding ten key principles covering human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. To date, 20,000 members across 160 nations have committed to these universal principles, grounded in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, conducting business responsibly, and taking strategic actions through collaboration and innovation. Ireland needs forward-thinking leaders from the private sector committed to prioritising sustainability, says Nessa Whelan, United Nations Global Compact Ireland Country Manager to ensure a future where the UN's Sustainable Development Goals are achieved. "The official launch of the network in Ireland marks a groundbreaking milestone towards driving positive sustainable change. New members can expect to join like-minded organisations that will advance their business beyond mere regulatory compliance, towards sustainable actions that add true value through longevity and profitability." The UNGC launch coincides with the introduction of the Forward Faster initiative in the Irish market - a strategy urging expedited action by Irish businesses to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by the 2030 deadline. With only 15% of the goals currently on track, accelerated and purposeful change from the public and private sectors is essential. With national and international keynote speakers, the event will lead and inspire conversations around some of the most pressing Forward Faster themes for Irish businesses, such as gender equality, living wage, climate action, and water resilience. "We encourage Irish businesses interested in joining an initiative focused on actionable sustainable change to be a part of this thriving community," says Nessa Whelan. Upon launch, new registrants of the Global Compact will join existing Irish members accelerating their impact, including An Post, DAA, Smurfit Kappa, Ryanair, ICON plc, and AIB. The Network launch event is by invitation only, but requests for attendance are being considered. Strategy, Leadership and Impact

Corporate responsibility, also known as corporate social responsibility (CSR) or corporate citizenship, refers to a company's commitment to addressing and managing its impact on society and the environment. Integrating social, environmental, and ethical considerations into a company's business practices and decision-making processes. Corporate responsibility extends beyond the pursuit of profit and encompasses a broader set of responsibilities towards stakeholders, including employees, customers, communities, suppliers, and shareholders. It recognises that businesses have a role in contributing to sustainable development, fostering positive social outcomes, and minimising negative environmental impacts. Critical areas of corporate responsibility often include:  1. Environmental Sustainability: Companies are expected to adopt practices that minimise their environmental footprint, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving resources, promoting renewable energy, and implementing waste management and recycling initiatives.  2. Ethical Business Practices: Conducting business with integrity, transparency, and fairness. Companies must adhere to ethical standards, combat corruption and bribery, and ensure responsible governance. 3. Social Impact and Community Engagement: Companies are encouraged to engage with and positively contribute to the communities in which they operate. This can include supporting local initiatives, investing in education and healthcare, promoting diversity and inclusion, and respecting human rights throughout their supply chains.  4. Employee Well-being and Development: Ensuring employees' well-being, safety, and fair treatment is an essential aspect of corporate responsibility. This involves providing a safe working environment, fair wages, equal opportunities, and supporting employee development and work-life balance.  5. Stakeholder Engagement and Dialogue: Companies must engage in open and transparent dialogue with their stakeholders, including customers, investors, employees, and communities. This helps build trust, allows for feedback, and enables companies to understand and respond to societal expectations and concerns. 6. Responsible Supply Chain Management: Companies ensure that their supply chains operate ethically and sustainably. This includes monitoring suppliers for compliance with labour and environmental standards and addressing any issues.  Corporate responsibility is not only driven by ethical considerations but also by the recognition that responsible business practices can lead to long-term financial success. It can enhance a company's reputation, attract and retain talented employees, strengthen customer loyalty, and mitigate risks associated with environmental and social issues. Many companies now publish sustainability reports or CSR reports to communicate their commitments, goals, and progress in these areas, allowing stakeholders to assess their performance and hold them accountable. Additionally, various frameworks and standards, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the United Nations Global Compact, and the new IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) Sustainability Disclosure Standards S1 are the general requirements for the disclosure of sustainability-related financial information and S2 climate-related disclosures which came into effect 1 January 2024.

With me today is Holly Smithson, the CEO of Athena. Athena is an organization with a mission to advance women in STEM leadership to 1 million strong by 2030. Holly is a voracious supporter of strong business skills within nonprofits, and we are so happy to speak with her today. Holly, thanks for joining us. 00:53 Holly Smithson: Well, thank you, Stacey. I'm excited to be here. And congratulations on the launch of your new podcast. 01:01 Stacey Lund: Thank you. Holly, you've had leadership roles like Athena is not your first rodeo, so talk to us a little bit about your leadership at other nonprofits and kind of the journey that you think nonprofit leadership takes. You've had an evolution, so talk a little bit about that. 01:15 Holly Smithson: Yeah, I've been really fortunate here in the great state of California, where there's a high volume of advocacy groups and sort of community groups that bond together in pursuit of a common agenda. And I have been fortunate enough to lead a couple of those in the space of life sciences, clean technology, and now women's leadership, specifically in the fields of STEM. And each of those organizations have a pretty successful track record. We know that on average, 90% of nonprofits will fail within their first few years, in large part because there's not a strategic plan or there's just some leadership deficiencies. So been really blessed and really fortunate to have these opportunities and these platforms to support these industry clusters. 02:03 Stacey Lund: That's amazing. So would you say and I mean, you're in an organization now that really is teaching leadership in a lot of ways, right? Harnessing your inner leadership skills is your evolution, or do you feel like nonprofit leadership and the focus on strategy and business skills, do you feel like that's kind of a tandem path to teaching women in STEM how to be better leaders? Is it the same trajectory that nonprofit leaders just don't really realize kind of what skills they need? Or what do you think the deficiency is? 02:38 Holly Smithson: I like your question, and here's why. Because we in the nonprofit industry for a long time had this false narrative that we want to show that we have spent very little of your donor money on overhead when all that does is perpetuate this race to the bottom mentality. And they know that it takes money to make money. So, the idea that you are going to communicate a business philosophy that you can spend the very least amount of money to drive an impact. When in fact, what you actually need to do is take some of the donor's money and put it back into the mission. Into the organization. Into technology. Into talent development. Professional development. And so that's why you see these really nasty numbers where 90% of these nonprofits fail in the first few years. What donors really want is what is the impact based on your budget. 03:36 Stacey Lund: Talk a little bit more about that where you mentioned tools and technology. You're going to take your donor dollars and you're going to bolster your infrastructure. about the strategy behind that, and then about data, because I know you love data, and the way to show results is through measurement. And I think it's hard when you have a mission, and you love the mission to even kind of put KPIs in place for success. 04:00 Holly Smithson: For my mindset and because I professionally grew up working on Capitol Hill, working in public policy where accountability is scammed. And so, when I came out to California 15 years ago, my goal and my desire were to do the exact opposite of what they do in the federal government, I wanted to be a part of an organization that had an impact, that actually had outcomes that were measurable, and where everybody was on the same page, and everybody was rowing in the same direction. And we're guided by a set of data that informs us whether we're going in the right direction, whether we're going with the right people, and have the right tools in place to achieve success. And what I found was, obviously, the big data movement occurred within the last 20 years. So, if you in effect don't become a technology company, you will disappear. And the faster you understand and the faster that you're able to respond to those market dynamics, the more valuable you'll be. And that's something that's really been critical to my success, I believe, is being able to understand and see those market dynamics. You've got to have that constant excuse me, connectivity with your clients, right? Let me just give you an example. So, Athena, we've been around. We're celebrating our 25th anniversary next year. We now offer our 50 leadership development programs without boundaries. We were able to become a virtual organization. We need to understand being able to deploy a lot of the new technologies that would allow us to serve our community. We needed to hire in our very small and nimble team, those who have this new technology, proficiencies, and competencies so that we, in effect, can become a data company.  I need to see the data so that we can understand where our investment in our female leaders is leading us. And so being able to understand that that's where companies are today. If they're not investing in their female leaders, if they're not demonstrating that investment in material ways, then guess what? Those managers are going to be hit because of their performance evaluation, which is structured on how we are developing our talent. And so that's a cool opportunity for us to be able to generate the data, not just speak at it anecdotally, but come at it from a very clear dashboard that shows, here are the 50 women in your C suite or your management or your board that have come through our leadership programs. And then the conversation is just data-driven. The vision to be able to communicate using technology in a way that makes all the values and the impact so abundantly clear is where I believe Athena has been successful certainly in the last five years. 06:44 Stacey Lund: So, give me a little more on that. Athena, I know when you came in, right? You really focused. I'm going to call it on the customer success. The product, the data around it, and to show value. How did you do that? 06:58 Holly Smithson: What we did when we first when it first came on five years ago, the year was 2017, and that was the launch of the #metoo campaign. And so suddenly the board of directors at Athena is looking around and we're seeing this uprising and all these stories and all of these anecdotes of discrimination and harassment and biases that suddenly were not just one off. Because of, social media, we have this forever platform where these stories are compounded and become so pervasive that businesses everywhere it was hard to ignore. And so, we saw as an opportunity, as the voice of women in STEM, to not just join the echo chamber, but actually drive the conversation with data and really level set the conversation in a way that could address what we found to be the perception gap. So, if we don't think that women should only have 20% of STEM jobs, then that's not how we see things. Until we bring data to say, hey, if you're okay with 80% of some of the highest wage salary positions in the STEM world going to men, then that's a different conversation. And so, in that shift back in 2017, we started to have this Titanic shift at Athena. Where we wanted to get away from this sort of portfolio of programming on leadership, development, mentoring, networking, sort of the critical recipes for career advancement. When you come at the conversation with data, you're able to have a different conversation and you're able to arrive at more meaningful outcomes. 08:33 Stacey Lund: How much data did you gather yourself versus using studies that were already out? There was a combination. And did you have to bring in a data analyst or walk through that? 08:44 Holly Smithson: Well, so, at our 20th anniversary in 2018, we had our big annual STEM event of the year. And so we partnered with UC San Diego, which birthed Athena 25 years ago, and said, hey, we want to go in and produce an index. We want to have a women and STEM workforce index. We'd like to see how we are doing as a global STEM hub here in Southern California, and then how do we stack against the rest of the nation. And so we basically worked with them. They curated the data. We did it across all STEM fields. And then we broke it down by women in life sciences, women in technology, women in engineering, and then women in leadership positions. So that enabled us to kind of get a handle on where we stood and then how far we needed to go. And with that index, we did that product launch. And at that time we had also launched a partnership with the United Nations Global Compact. And the UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate social responsibility initiative. And in that initiative, it has 17 global goals, and one of them is to achieve gender equality. And so throughout those two initiatives, that was part of our biggest strategic outreach, to become more of an advocate to elevate Athena and obviously our corporate partners in ways that said, we don't have all the answers. We do have shared values. We have the data that tells us we have a ways to go, but we actually want to make this world sustainable. And we understand that the role of gender equality will play in that endeavor. And so now you suddenly have this movement, you have a set of people that are humble, that are informed, and, quite frankly, care more about the outcomes, the long-term outcomes, than just looking at their short-term gain. Some data-driven methodologies that would enable them to modernize their workforce. To recruit more women. To retain more women. To invest in their leadership growth. And then to ultimately drive. You know. The bottom line and their customers and their customer base and their customer loyalty. And so that whole process was, I would say, that was going on from 2018 to 2020 until the Pandemic hit. And so that was a huge evolution for Athena. And now we're this global entity that is widely respected and regarded as somebody that's on the ground, on the boots ground, in a global hub that wants to drive action. And if you're going to drive action and you're going to be bold enough to say, we want to advance a million women in STEM by 2030, you better be able to tell the story to keep the industry accountable. 11:20 Stacey Lund: So let's use that same chutzpah and put it towards diversifying women in STEM. That's so interesting because you really took it on almost like a for-profit product launch, right? You did your market research, you looked at other things that were happening, like the UN Council and what you could grab and pull and sort of cross-checked it with your mission, and then you sort of repackaged it. It's been an evolution, but you really did apply product principles to almost like transforming your mission or bolstering your mission to take it the next step. How's that sort of post-pandemic? So, that was before, and during and now after. How does that feel? What kind of resonance is there? What do you see next? 12:00 Holly Smithson: Well, that's interesting. So for us, for most of our history, we are focusing on the individual women that make up our membership portfolio. And obviously, the companies would be investing in those high performers, in those high potentials. And that was really our go-to market approach. But that shift, as I mentioned through our collaboration with the United Nations, was why don't we spend our efforts and our resources and reallocate them to support our companies? Because our 50 corporate partners employ over a million people worldwide. So I'm a nonprofit organization. I don't have a budget to get the emails of all women in STEM. But what I do have is I have onramp with my 50 corporate partners who have satellite locations worldwide and we know their total employee population. So by us focusing on how we can encourage and support those efforts by our corporate partners, we're able to lift the entire employee population far exceeding our individual support groups. And so everything that we do and the success that we've had is largely in part because of our corporate partners. And so we also have to come at it and recognize that there's a high degree of humility on the ones that do. This is Pfizer. It's Oracle. It's Qualcomm. It's Marauder Therapeutics. It's aTyr Pharmaceuticals. And so we know that we've got to partner with people that have been at it for a while to make sure to keep us accountable and to make sure that we're doing this in a way that's data-driven and reduce a lot of the trial and error time and get more actionable strategies that we can deploy today and start reaping the rewards. Understanding where the pain points are and where there's cracks in the foundation of the corporate cultures, helps us design products, as you would say in the private sector, helps us come up with these customized curriculums and content to help offset the challenges. And just to kind of give you an example the soft skills is where a lot of these women were falling short on. And had they been able to actually articulate their value proposition, to be able to recruit and activate male allies on their part, to offer them up to lead a special project, to be able to really build their social capital, these are obviously the social skills they're not teaching you at Berkeley or Stanford or MIT or any university or community college, for all I know. And so we saw that as a gap, a skills gap that we could fill and that would help them retain the women so that they could advance their careers.   14:36 Stacey Lund: Awesome. So if you were going to say, I'm going to summarize for a minute, it sounds like really from a recipe point of view for a successful nonprofit, understand your mission. And so many leaders do they feel it right? They wear it on their sleeve, and they really are champions of their mission. But they have to be able to distill it down to such a value prop that it's crisp and it's alive, but it's also quantifiable. And then you've got to be able to have data that supports wherever you came from that led you there and then wherever you're going. And you have to adjust that, right? And that can be tech. It could be Google Sheets. I don't care what you use, right? You could find some great kids at UCSD, whatever works for you. 15:25 Holly Smithson: If you don't embrace and leverage technology and don't have your finger on the market forces, that's a recipe for swift failure. 1.5 million nonprofits operate in this country today and very few of them operate under the million-dollar mark. We're talking the most highly funded are YMCA, Red Cross, United Way, and those are mission driven organizations that are bringing value to people and families and communities. And they obviously have a very rich history. They are very well funded. And when they are well managed, they're able to bring a lot of impact to the communities they serve. And when they are mismanaged, everybody knows. When you are trying to weather all of these different events, like, obviously we were mismanaged in our 20-year history. We were about to go under because we had a lot of volunteers who had really good intentions, but nobody had a line of sight on the budget, nobody had accountability, nobody ran a PNL. And so, you had a bunch of well-intended people trying to put together this big, huge turkey feast for Thanksgiving. And it was unfortunate. And so, I came in to do a turnaround, which is what I love to do and be able to reassess all of the disorganization, to reestablish the products, the value, the mission, reestablish the trust of our corporate partners, and then really to put a really bright spotlight on how important it is and how far we have to go and how far we come on our mission. And then we got the belt taken over a hiney by the Pandemic and all of that great work and the reestablishing and productizing and cleaning up our portfolio, cleaning up our database, really elevating our brand equity across through the UN collaboration. And then BAM. That was very sad and frustrating for everybody. But had we not reinforced our business model and reinforced the necessities to get this organization get back up and continue in its march, then we would have been taken out for good. 17:39 Stacey Lund: I had a CEO I worked for a million years ago named Alex Sun. He's phenomenal. He's with Enlight, and he used to talk about protecting the core. The first order of business is protect the core. And the first rule of that is you have to know what your core is, right? So it sounds like when the Pandemic hit, it could have crippled you, it could have killed you, and it didn't, because you were already taking your value proposition and streamlining it to the point where you could protect that core. Right, those volunteers, as well meaning as they were, and I've worked in lots of organizations where I'm one of them, right, where it's we're making Thanksgiving dinner, but we're really heavy on the turkey, and there's no mashed potatoes. You don't want to do that. You want a good balance, and you can't be out of balance, but you have to protect that core. And you've already taken that on, and now you're just taking that to the next level of what you know, now that we're out of it, and I don't need to be quite so pedantic about protection, what can I do now that we're out of it to get to the next level? Do you know what your stats are? Can you share those with us? Where are we in 2022? 18:40 Holly Smithson: So now that our program portfolio reaches, I think we have almost 99 different countries represented in our virtual programs. So now we have to double down on our investment in our technology and our capabilities to be able to track that data, upload it, and then be able to design it in a way that shows in real time to be able to bifurcate and extract the data insight, really get a normalization of our data, a cleansing of our data. Right now, we don't have that mastered. And we're on the precipice of being able to communicate the impact we're having in a much more compelling fashion than we are today. I would say we are halfway there to our mission, but our ability to do that in a much more disciplined manner is gonna require us to become a data analytics company. 19:35 Stacey Lund: Which makes total sense, right? 19:38 Holly Smithson I love the ability and the opportunity to actually bring all of the impact into a nice package that empowers our partners and positions our partners to demonstrate to their shareholders, to their customers, to their employees and all their stakeholders, their commitment by numbers. And so as we move into that, we obviously just recovered our financial from the Pandemic, and then we've got enough to support us. Now we're adjusting ourselves and we're going into hopefully clear skies. Now we got to double down into this data analytics phase that I want to take us into. And again, everybody is grappling with this. If you look at Accenture or PwC or HBR, everybody's talking about the need for companies to everywhere to upskill, right. Remote collaboration, technology, all of this. Everybody's turning this corner, like it or not. And so you've got to find the resources. I've got to find the resources to do this. It's not an option. 20:38 Stacey Lund: But it's there. And you know where to go. You know what you want the end result to sort of look like. And you know that it's possible. And I think that's important because, yes, it's a blue-sky exercise, but there's no need to be afraid. And I think 25 years, hey, a lot of orgs don't last that long, let alone nonprofits. Right? You've had a few transitions under your belt, so I'm sure you will get there, actually. And I can't wait to see it. It's going to be phenomenal. Alright Holly if we want to find out more about your mission and about the results, where do we go? How do we find out? 21:10 Holly Smithson: Yes, you can find us on Athenastemwomen.org. 21:15 Stacey Lund: Thank you, thank you so much for joining us. I really appreciated it on behalf of Samm and I. “We want to make sure the contribution we make is a positive one in the world.” Joanna Jaramillo (33:57-34:00) You've probably seen Wholesum's ripe, organic Poppies or Darlings snacking tomatoes, Persian cucumbers, or bright and crisp bell peppers when shopping for groceries, but did you know Wholesum's produce is 100% fresh, organic, responsibly grown, they use 100% renewable energy on their farms, and the company has a decade under their belt of being fair trade certified? A true, progressive leader in the agriculture industry, Wholesum was one of the first to dedicate their entire farming portfolio to organic food back in the 90's!    Their commitment to making a positive impact on our planet is even more impressive. Wholesome has committed to the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 12, and they publish a report every year to showcase their successes, but also be held accountable by all stakeholders as a way to identify opportunities for improvement. It's not too often you find a company who's so willing to be criticized by all of their stakeholders, whether it's the communities they work in, their employees, their suppliers, customers or consumers. The report captures data across the board of Wholesum's farming operations, such as their energy use, renewable and non-renewable outputs, water recirculation, waste management ,recycling, social impact, gender equality and the impact of fair trade on their farms.    “What moved my soul when I experienced Wholesum was to see how these fair trade premiums were spent, and to see how this one farming operation, this one brand, the cucumbers I buy at Whole Foods, turn into real funds that the workers can vote on where they want their money to be spent.” Lori Taylor (3:13-3:38)    In 2018, Wholesum made a commitment to the principles of the United Nations Global Compact, which is when they decided to commit to Goal 5 and 12 of the Sustainable Development Goals. We've talked to several stakeholders in the UN's SDGs in previous episodes, but if you aren't familiar, these are a set of 17 goals developed by the United Nations to get businesses and government agencies to collaborate on solving some of the world's biggest problems. The 17 SDGs are:  No poverty  Zero hunger  Good health and well-being  Quality education  Gender equality  Clean water and sanitation  Affordable and clean energy  Decent work and economic growth  Industry, innovation and infrastructure  Reduced inequalities  Sustainable cities and communities  Responsible consumption and production  Climate action  Life below water  Life on land  Peace, justice and strong institutions  Partnerships for the goals    Although Wholesum's core values align with each of these goals, and they want to ensure they are measurably making an impact towards all 17, they decided to focus on Goal 5, gender equality, and Goal 12 responsible consumption and production, because they knew they could make a direct impact towards these on their farms. As they continue to report yearly and build a roadmap of progress, they can take on more of the SDGs and incorporate them into their operations.    “Gender equality is a basic human right. We need to make sure that we, as a company, are respecting both men and women. There have been inequities for women in farming in the past, and so we need to shed light on those and be the progressive company we are and move forward to acknowledging these problems and doing something about it.” Joanna Jaramillo (23:18-23:53)   There are many ways Wholesum is ensuring gender equality is available across their entire operation. For one, they're focused on providing equal pay, equal opportunities, and no violence or harassment is promoted in the company culture. They're also well aware of the duties many women have in their household when they're off from work, so Wholesum is starting projects to promote work-life balance.   During one of their needs assessments, they found that many women weren't going to the doctor regularly because they didn't want to take time off work or were waiting until they felt sick. Wholesum is now setting up mobile clinics on site so women can have their regular check ups and are educated on the importance of preventative care. They're also building certain pathways for personal development and promoting from within the company for more women to have leadership opportunities. Even Joanna herself started as the Marketing Coordinator in 2018 and is now the Marketing Manager!    “It's a very difficult task to go through each of these 17 goals and determine how to work towards achieving them all at once.” Joanna Jaramillo (17:49-18:01)   To make an impact with SDG 12, Wholesum looks at all of their inputs, all the way down to the twine they use on their cucumbers or the labels that go on their tomato packages. Everything is classified as renewable or nonrenewable and by measuring these facts, they're able to identify what they can replace or reduce. One of Joanna's responsibilities is looking into packaging design, which can be a challenging and complex situation. For example, she found a packaging item that was very sustainable, but when they tested on their product, the shelf life majorly reduced, which would lead to more food waste – a packaging paradox.    Wholesum has been actively creating a positive impact and evolving their company for three generations, ever since their first tomato seed was planted in New Mexico. Hopefully other companies and stakeholders are inspired to create their own changes and work towards goals like the SDGs by following Wholesum's lead in progressive impact. #011 In today's episode, get ready for a fresh perspective on the Business Case for DEI, as we welcome Amelia Huix, Advisor for Gender Equality at the United Nations Global Compact. In 2015, the United Nations announced a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by our societies at large by 2030. Gender Equality for all women across the globe is one of them. This means achieving diverse, equitable and inclusive workplaces and businesses. The UN Global Compact gathers business organizations committed to the SDGs. We explore with Amelia how the SDGs are a tool to foster commitment, accountability and transparency for gender equality and DEI in the business field. We discuss how the SDGs participate in building a new social justice case for DEI that goes beyond the business case. We talk about the role that companies and business leaders are expected to play today as social agents of the XXIst century. Are the SDGs the change in paradigme that we need in order to see real and sustainable DEI in all aspects of our economies and societies? Can they gather the buy-in that the business case doesn't manage to get? Do not hesitate to follow Amelia Huix on LinkedIn (@Amelia Huix) to continue following her journey as a DEI leader. In Episode 4 of Series 5 of the Rights Track, Todd is talking with Elaine Michel-Hill and  Arianne Griffith. Elaine is the business and human rights lead at Marshalls plc, a leading hard landscape company serving both the commercial and domestic construction markets with multiple operating sites in the UK and supply chains across the globe. Arianne leads the Rights Lab Modern Slavery Evidence Unit's (MSEU) deployment of research for business application. Her work also focuses on effective law and policy to tackle modern slavery in supply chains and the application of business and human rights frameworks to the anti-slavery agenda. Together with Todd they discuss the connections between the UN Sustainable Goals SDG 8.7 on tackling modern slavery and SDG 12 on sustainable consumption and production patterns.   00.00 – 02.17 Elaine outlines the work of Marshalls plc, a major supplier of construction products including natural stone. She explains that most of the natural stone is sourced outside of the UK in over 30 countries including Brazil, China, India and Vietnam and notes that it is in these operations and its supply chains, where there is the greatest risk of human rights abuses.   02.17 – 07.15 Elaine describes how, over a number of years, she has closely observed the quarrying process at first hand. Most stone originates from quarries they operate and the company has a dialogue with local operators to understand local labour contexts. They also source stone on the open market where that dialogue is less possible. In the quarries operated by Marshalls, for example in India, all stone extraction is mechanised and over the last 15 years the labour requirement has noticeably reduced. However, she is aware that hand labour is still extensively used in other quarries. As a result of work with local suppliers the use of child labour is less obvious. However, she suspects it still exists, out of sight, and has strong connections to bonded labour and forced labour.   07.15 – 11.40 Arianne reviews a range of information and guidance for both states and companies and points to 2011 as a significant turning point in relation to corporate business and supply chains with the unanimous adoption by the Human Rights Council of the Guiding Principles on business and human rights. They gave rise to a number of instruments and resources and outline: the duty of states to protect human rights the duty of companies to respect human rights the joint duty of both to find remedies to abuses of human rights This has led to two significant advances: It gave companies a framework on which to build policy Companies began to discuss the issues with one another and state actors In terms of delivering on the guidelines, corporate responsibility exists irrespective of the state's capacity to deliver protection of human rights. Although the guidelines are not binding, in Arianne's view companies are increasingly accepting responsibility to meet them. She points out that the OECD guidelines for multi-national enterprises provide a slightly different framework. In Arianne's view, however, there is a real need for legislation at the national level. 11.40 – 15.19 Elaine's experience is that even without legislation companies can develop a responsible approach to human rights. Her own company, she points out were early signatories to the United Nations Global Compact. Its value was: The framework for action it provided It was an expression of public commitment to the spirit of the Compact  The existing “philanthropic” culture within the company made the process of embedding the ideas and developing policies relatively straightforward. This also has benefits for maintaining a good reputation with customers; a process Elaine describes as commercialising an approach to sustainability. This protects the long-term viability of the company, and is essential if human rights are to be supported. 15.19 – 19.26 The UK Modern Slavery Act  brought a real focus to the company's approach to human rights. Its aim is to engage with the spirit of the law, not just compliance. It is publishing its fifth statement on modern slavery It engages in full and transparent reporting of its activities and has evolved an increasing range of indicators and evidence Evidence of training with suppliers Evidence of improvements to due diligence A modern slavery report Details of collaborative projects Details of (human rights) risk profiles for different countries to justify policies Details of spending, and volumes of production across its operations It also reports on collaborative projects such as the IOM programme in Vietnam. 19.26 – 21.36 All agree, transparency, or lack of it, is a key issue. Arianne's view is that there is a limited level of engagement beyond a narrow compliance with the law. Whilst the Modern Slavery Act has brought about significant change, and served to create a more level playing field across the corporate world, companies need to do much more. 21.36 – end A discussion around the impacts of the COVID 19 pandemic. Elaine's view is that given the extreme pressures on companies, vulnerable workers have become more vulnerable and considerations of human rights have been pushed to one side. It shows a need to: Check that modern slavery statements reflect the changed situation Build more resilience in the system Re-double due diligence.  It also points to the need for greater transparency particularly where the corporate sector and the informal sector (criminal activity, corruption, trafficking) merge, but Elaine questions whether there are limits to how much transparency can be achieved.
