Do you like bad wordplay and some questionable cultural representations in your seasonally-appropriate horror? Then boy do we have a franchise for you! LEPRECHAUN 2 (1994) is neither the best nor worst entry in the series, but it certainly IS an entry in the series, so you get us trying to outdrink Warwick Davis in a St. Paddy's iced tea chugging contest. While it's no Leprechaun Goes to Vegas (part 3) but it's still better than anything after Leprechaun in Space, which we have ALSO discussed, so all in all, let's call this a win. Erin go bragh! This week we want to thank you all the great drivers out there. Maybe one of you helped inspire Geggy Tah to pen their hit "Whoever You Are". This laid-back track about letting you change lanes was a minor hit in the mid-90s and found itself in car commercials years later but unfortunately Geggy Tah couldn't get another hit. The BAMPIRE Interview Bit of a change this episode; Lee and Adam chat with filmmakers Zoe Wassman and Malachite Saaquya about their movie “Bampire”, which they are in the process of crowdfunding. Bampire is a 90s-set horror comedy, introducing a brand new element to vampire lore - vampires who morph into deer! Combining live action with practical effects and animation - it's described as “Evil Dead 2” meets “Roger Rabbit”. It has a cast including genre stalwart Diane Franklin, “The Room”'s Greg Sestero and the legendary “Lloyd Kaufman”; animation from Josh Stifter; visual effects by the award winning Trysta Kelley; and Taylor Morden in the director's chair. Having completed filming, the guys are now looking to raise the funds required for post production. As you will hear, Zoe and Malakhai's passion and love for this project is infectious, they really want to get this out there, and from what we've seen of the amazing footage they have, so do we!Have a listen, and go to bampiremovie.com which will take you straight to their Indiegogo page, there you'll see a teaser and find out exactly what you can do to help this movie get out there, and pick up some lovely merch too! Joining us this week is brilliant documentarian Taylor Morden, who's currently immersed in the creation of his upcoming feature Getting Lost. The Lost television series was a phenomenon that left millions of viewers scratching their collective head each week. That sense of wonder continues even today, as both mine and Matt's tiny little brains were blown at the fact that Malcolm David Kelley — aka Walt from Lost — is one half of the pop duo MKTO, who had a Top 20 hit with “Classic” in 2013. Did these guys bring the musical thunder though? “We have to go back” to find out! Supernova International Ska Festival started in 2013 as a house show that got so big, it was moved to a local brewery. Though it took a few years before it got the name Supernova, and that first show wasn't even a festival; just a kick-ass show with Chris Murray and King Django. Every year, Supernova has grown. 2023 is looking to be the biggest and best version of the festival to date with acts from all over the world like Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Fishbone, The Dualers, Don Letts, Stranger Cole, The Planet Smashers, Catbite, Out Of Control Army, and so much more. Today we talk about all things Supernova with co-founder Tim Receveur (He founded the festival with his wife April) and creative director Mike DeMatteo. This week on Total Movie Recall, we watch the first Manic Pixie Dream Girl ever on screen, who is not a girl at all, but is most decidedly a woman. It's the perfect post-2020 movie, and not just because of the constant suicides. It's twee and precious and we absolutely loved it. Harold & Maude (1971) d. Hal Ashby w. Colin Higgins Music by: Cat Steven (Yusuf Islam) Starring: Ruth Gordon Bud Cort Vivian Pickles Cult classic pairs Cort as a dead-pan disillusioned 20-year-old obsessed with suicide and a loveable Gordon as a fun-loving 80-year-old eccentric. They meet at a funeral, and develop a taboo romantic relationship, in which they explore the tired theme of the meaning of life with a fresh perspective. We have Taylor Morden, director, and producer of the nostalgia documentary, The Last Blockbuster (2020).The Last Blockbuster is a fun, nostalgic feature length documentary film about the rise and fall of Blockbuster video and how one small town store managed to outlast a corporate giant. In 2017, when Morden started filming the Blockbuster documentary, there were only 13 blockbusters around the United States. You need to listen to him recount the moment he got the idea to produce The Last Blockbuster and all the ways the universe aligned for this project. We talked a great deal about his distribution plan, the challenges indie filmmakers face, and his company PopMotion Pictures. He also directed Pick It Up!, aSka in the ‘90s chronicles the rise and fall of Third Wave Ska music in the US of the 1990s.Enjoy my nostalgic conversation with Taylor Morden.

At its peak, renting a movie from Blockbuster Video was a common experience for many households. But thousands of Blockbuster locations were slowly whittled down to one on the planet. And it's in Bend. “The Last Blockbuster,” a documentary about the last location, is streaming on Netflix. Taylor Morden is the director of the film and Zeke Kamm is the writer. They join us to tell us more about the film and the iconic location left in Bend.
What does it take to build and connect with an audience in the digital age of independent film? Taylor Morden of Pop Motion Pictures discovered the answer in his early musician days: make friends, not fans. The transition from music to film was natural as the do-it-yourself punk rock work ethic made sense in the world of documentary film. Learn whatever you need to learn, do what you need to do, and always build your community. From his first documentary about the band, The Refreshments, to his films about ska music and the last Blockbuster Video store in Bend, Oregon, Taylor brings movies to life that matter to both him and his audience. On top of that, he makes sure to have a good time.
A few years ago, when there were 12 Blockbusters still open, Director Taylor Morden (Here’s to Life: The Story of The Refreshments, Pick It Up! - Ska in the ‘90s) approached his friend Zeke Kamm (Dexter’s Laboratory, The Weird Al Show) about making a documentary on the dying Blockbuster franchise. Coincidentally, the true last Blockbuster was in Morden and Kamm’s town of Bend, Oregon. In this interview, the duo talk about their four year journey to make the film, how their documentary outline accidentally predicted the future, the magnetism of Sandi Harding, how to cold call celebrities, and we get into the weeds a little on copyright law and the realities of making a documentary feature. This week, we’re watching a movie about a round, hairy, grumpy animal who hates Monday’s and isn’t satisfied with Lasagna anymore. That’s right, it’s Clerks, with Taylor Morden, director of The Last Blockbuster, streaming now! Starring Ash Blodgett, Bret Eagleston, Samantha Willson, and Pat Edwards
Taylor Morden loved movies so much as a kid he would walk miles to recycle cans to earn money for rentals from a gas station near his house. He talks to Will about the production of his documentaries The Last Blockbuster and Pick It Up: Ska in the 90s, his start as a Trumpet player in a Ska band, to video work in Washington DC before making his first feature length documentary, interview technique, directing music videos, and what he hopes to see for the future of one of his favorite movie series Star Wars. We get into the next step of Marty McFly's time tripping - all those whiplash time currents that make up this pop culture bonanza. Hoverboards, Pepsi Perfects, and 1989 Trump impersonation fuel this time trip.Joining us is Taylor Morden. Last year, during the initial 2020 lockdown, he organized Project 88, wherein people in quarantine recreated the 88 scenes of Back to the Future Part II. Check that out here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcUUjWbVc4I&t=3631sEven more impressive is his recent documentary "The Last Blockbuster," which takes a close look at the only remaining Blockbuster Video in Bend, Oregon. We get into that a bit near the end of this episode. You'll find the film available on Amazon, but why not get started at this website first?:https://popmotionpictures.com/Please do rate, review, and subscribe us on Apple Podcasts, YouTube or whatever you use to nab those podcasts. Blockbuster Video at its peak had over 9000 stores. In 1989 a new store opened every 17 hours! But now there is only 1. What happened? The Last Blockbuster is located in idyllic Bend Oregon, a modern town overflowing with high speed internet, a meca for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. There's plenty to do year round. How, in a place like this, does The Last Blockbuster Survive? Who are the people who work here, rent videos here, and how did a video rental store chain grow so huge that it impacted the way Hollywood made movies only to crash and burn from 9000 locations to 1? Now people of all ages are driving from across the country to stand out front of The Last Blockbuster and take their photo next to the iconic Blockbuster sign, to go in and browse like it's a museum, and to touch the racks and racks of physical media. News outlets from around the globe are covering this last store on their nightly broadcasts. Think back to a simpler time - before there was a redbox in every grocery store, before Netflix changed the way you got your movies. Remember Saturday nights walking up and down the brightly lit aisles stacked with movies, that smell of popcorn, candy, and plastic? Maybe it's nostalgia for a time when the world seemed less complicated. Maybe it's a longing for a more tangible world back when you could hold the movies you loved in your hands. Whatever your reason, the world is clearly fascinated by The Last Blockbuster.
On this week's episode we are joined by Maria and talk to Taylor Morden who directed the recently released documentary, "The Last Blockbuster." The documentary highlights the rise and fall of Blockbuster video, the last remaining location in Bend, Oregon, and takes you on a nostalgic trip to what it was like visiting movie rental stores. We also couldn't resist asking him a few questions on his other documentary, "Pick it Up! Ska in the '90's" to discuss the meteoric rise ska took in the 90s and how it's thriving today! Afterwards, the gang discuss their own nostalgia around the subjects and finish off with another round of Do You Know it?! with Quizmaster Jeff! *** You can follow Taylor's work here- https://popmotionpictures.com Check out their cool Back to the Future Project here- https://www.bttftoo.com *** Find us on Facebook.com/nostablenostalgia Instagram.com/notable.nostalgia Twitter.com/notable90s --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/notablenostalgia/message

We're going to make this episode, a Blockbuster night! You may not live close to the last Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, but we'll do our best to emulate a Friday night walking up and down the aisles looking for the perfect movie. To do that, we have the director of The Last Blockbuster, Taylor Morden as our guest judge this week! If you haven't seen the documentary yet, it's a total walk down memory lane, and we highly recommend it. To deliver nostalgia to the max, we're also going to cover B-Movies again! Which year had the best B-Movies in your option? Let's look at our competitors. First up, our resident tape head, Mike Ranger is back with the best B-Movies 1995 had to offer. Marc James is smack dab in the middle of this one, with the B-Movie stronghold of 1990. And rounding out this battle of the decades, Mancrush comes with the early days of rental lore with B-Movies of 1985! Again, if you spent your days in the aisles of a rental store, you need to go out and watch The Last Blockbuster. Regardless if you liked Blockbuster or not, this documentary will take you back to the good ol' days. In this episode, you might hear about Chuck Norris putting Mike Ranger to sleep, gooey white stuff that tastes delicious, never ask Lloyd Kaufman to introduce himself, exploited Goblins, rated "S" movies, Roger Corman can make 47 movies with a hundred grand, our last B-movie judge moves cross country, adult movies spur children's cartoons, secret B-movie headquarters under a mall in Jersey, magazines for cinephiles, the very first straight to video gem, thirteen dollar tomatoes, The Last Blockbuster in Bend Oregon, rental night nostalgia, our relationship with movie consumption, Mancrush serenades, Marc James bends the rules, 35-year-old high school seniors, magnificent bastards, how Taylor scored a Kevin Smith interview, Jamie Kennedy and Samm Levine make appearances, and is there room for a rental store resurgence? Do you agree with Taylor's rulings? Play at home and judge for yourself! While you're at it, send your rulings to our Facebook and pick up 20 points on the Dueling Decades Leaderboard! The Last Blockbuster has a Kickstarter campaign right now and some rewards include: a functional Blockbuster membership card, a Blockbuster t-shirt and even a chance to work as an employee at the last Blockbuster for a day. https://www.lastblockbustermovie.com/Hop into our DeLorean and go back in time with a podcast that talks about the past, including pop culture, video games, random life stories, but mostly about the movies from our past.
We are joined by Taylor Morden, a writer/director, who has a current Kickstarter campaign, seeking funds for a documentary on the last Blockbuster in America (and quite possibly the world). We touch base on his current and past projects, his memories of Blockbuster and what the whole experience meant to him. Hey, gang. Russ here. This is a very special episode for…well, for a few reasons. The first reason, and the one least likely to impact our listeners, is that this will be the final episode recorded and edited on the trusty MacBook that has been with me since the start of the series. It is a work machine, and the corporate overlords at the day job have seen fit to outfit me with a new one that’s about 7 years newer than this. Farewell, old friend. Secondly, you might notice that I am flying solo on this adventure — and that the sound is kind of all over the place. Today’s episode features an interview between myself and the guys behind THE LAST BLOCKBUSTER — director Taylor Morden and producer Zeke Kamm. Originally, Zach Roberts and I recorded this — except that apparently, we didn’t, and the audio was lost to history. These good folks have a Kickstarter to promote — you can find that link here, and I encourage you to back it — and so rather than try to find a time where all four of us could be free and risking another technological mishap, we trimmed it down. And yeah, I kind of glanced over it, but for the first time since I talked to Joshua Hale Fialkov and Tony Fleecs about JEFF STEINBERG, CHAMPION OF EARTH, we have an interview on the show. Exciting times! Last but not least, this is the first episode where ECV will be featured on ACPN — the Art, Comedy, and Pop-Culture Network. You can check them out at TheACPN.com, and they’re good folks. Before I ever applied to be part of this collaborative circle of shows, I followed them on Facebook for quite some time and enjoyed a lot of the material they put out. If you like what we do here, you will probably like at least a few of their shows, which include Rewind Cinema and the Retro Cinema Podcast. The Last Blockbuster is a documentary expected to be released in early- to mid-2019. It centers on the final surviving Blockbuster Video store in Bend, Oregon, but that also talks about the video industry as a whole along the way. Taylor and Zeke were kind enough to carve out some time for us twice in a week, so please enjoy this interview — even if the audio quality on this conference call is not exactly the stuff that dreams are made of.
