This week, we discuss two films featuring friend of the show Roy Scheider. The first is The Seven-Ups (1973), a neo-noir mystery action thriller produced and directed by Philip D'Antoni. It stars Roy Scheider as a crusading policeman who is the leader of the Seven-Ups, a squad of plainclothes officers who use dirty, unorthodox tactics to snare their quarry on charges leading to prison sentences of seven years or more upon prosecution, hence the name of the team. The second is Marathon Man (1976), a thriller directed by John Schlesinger. It was adapted by William Goldman from his 1974 novel of the same title and stars Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Roy Scheider, William Devane and Marthe Keller. This cult classic, directed by John Flynn and co-written by Paul Schrader, who penned "Taxi Driver," delves deep into themes of vengeance and redemption through the lens of a Vietnam War veteran."Rolling Thunder" stars William Devane as Major Charles Rane, a POW returning home to a small Texas town after seven years of captivity. Expecting a hero's welcome and a chance to rebuild, Rane finds himself thrust into a nightmare when a gang of ruthless criminals, seeking a hoard of silver coins gifted to him as a welcome-home present, brutally attack him and his family, leading to tragic losses. The film follows Rane as he transitions from a war hero coping with reintegration into society to a man consumed by a cold, methodical quest for revenge. After the local law enforcement fails to deliver justice, Rane, along with his fellow POW and friend Johnny Vohden (played by Tommy Lee Jones in one of his early roles), takes matters into his own hands. What follows is a bloody pursuit that pushes the boundaries of justifiable retribution."Rolling Thunder" is renowned for its stark portrayal of violence and the psychological scars of war. It challenges viewers with its complex protagonist—a man who, having endured unimaginable torture as a POW, finds his most formidable battles await him at home. The film's stark, unflinching approach to its themes, combined with intense performances, especially from Devane and Jones, gives it a powerful edge that has resonated over the decades. So, whether you're revisiting this '70s classic or experiencing its harsh yet compelling story for the first time, join us on Bad Dads Film Review as we dissect "Rolling Thunder," exploring its legacy and relevance in today's cinematic landscape.
This week's physical media show features Peter Sobczynski and Erik Childress talking about a seminal propaganda film from the ‘60s that inspired a ‘70s scene in Boogie Nights plus some science-fiction from the 1980s from Imprint. The ‘80s also across an all-star cast that helped launch Julia Roberts and a Nancy Savoca film from the ‘90s due for a rediscovery. They discuss the film that inspired The Untouchables, plus Paul Schrader writes a religious comedy and then gets the 4K treatment to a project he disavowed. Then his frequent partner in crime, Martin Scorsese, also gets his Oscar-winning effort upgraded. Is it now considered underrated? Come for the discussion. For this week's Patreon episode, we watched the 1976 thriller "Marathon Man," directed by John Schlesinger, written by William Goldman, and starring Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Roy Scheider, William Devane and Marthe Keller. In "Marathon Man," Hoffman plays a graduate student who becomes entangled in a plot by a Nazi war criminal — and his U.S. government allies — to recover stolen diamonds. The film reflects an of-the-time fascination with the afterlife of the Nazi regime, and especially those Nazis who escaped to South America. We have nothing but positive things to say about this movie and our conversation was interesting as well. You can find "Marathon Man" for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon and for streaming on Paramount+. There is also a new 4K blu ray to check out, if you're so inclined.

That's a wrap on William Devane and that's a wrap on Season 4! Fanacek shall return with new content in 2024. In the meantime, check out this episode and dive deep with me as we wade through Mr. Devane's career in the 90s and 2000s. I'll walk you through his projects while also chit chatting about my time alone with Michael Richards, OJ Simpson's missing knife, the fraud that is the final season of 21 Jumpstreet, Sean Young's nutty antics, and a whole lotta Jesse Stone! Happy New Year!
Yep. More Fanacek and more Mr. Devane. We're gonna pick up where we left off in 1978 and take a good hard look at why he never became a bona fide feature film star. I'll focus mostly on his Knots Landings years (83-93). While we learn about William Devane's roles, I thought we'd also learn about Tobe Hooper being replaced by the director who once threatened Charles Manson, John "Bud" Carlos. We can also learn about the real Johnny Fontane, the crappy production company that employed my friend, tricked folks at the videos stores, and ultimately created Sharknado, Danny Pintauro's connection with Ryan White, my grandmother and I obsessively watching A Current Affair, and the lengths I went to to see Shannen Doherty topless. Happy Holidays!
I love William Devane. I was first introduced to him as Kelly Leak's dad in The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training. I enjoy him at least once a year when I re-watch Rolling Thunder. He's done tons of Film & Television and I'll explore most of it. I will also inundate you with useless shit like Christopher Motisanti's knowledge of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Donna Mills being "buoyant", Hitchcock and Al Packinow, and the various revenue bonds issued to build the Astrodome. This is my Christmas gift to the world.
On Episode 14 Pete and Seb discuss a film released in October of 1977 which premiered at CINE 42 on The Deuce. William Devane, Tommy Lee Jones and Linda Haynes star in John Flynn's classic revengeamatic ROLLING THUNDER.

Show Notes Dustin Hoffman is on the run this week in 1976's Marathon Man. We return to William Goldman, never disappointing, for this one as he adapted his own novel. And this thing is a rocket from beginning to end! Does it make perfect sense? Absolutely not! Did Lemuel have to tell Amity 20 minutes in that Roy Scheider and Dustin Hoffman were brothers? Yes! But she would have found out soon anyway. Do we lament the lack of a kiss between Scheider and William Devane? Of course! And finally – would we eat a diamond? Listen to see if we tell you. On this first episode of the podcast Phillip and his cousin Chip, start the show by explaining a little bit about themselves. Phillip then reads off a list of 20 grindhouse movies from Grindhouse Database, that are Quentin Tarantino's favorites. They both then answer if they have seen these movies. It's then time to dive into the feature of the podcast, Rolling Thunder from 1977. It stars William Devane, Tommy Lee Jones, and Linda Haynes and is directed by John Flynn. They have a great discussion and many thoughts on this movie. So sit back and listen. It's a fun and relaxed conversation. At the end of the episode they have the randomizer pick their next film to discuss; A Man of Respect AKA The Master Touch (1972). So come back next week to hear all about that. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingtarantinothepodcast/message

This is the trailer for the first episode of the podcast where Phillip and his cousin Chip watch and discuss a list of movies that Quentin Tarantino recommends, and see if they've influenced his work. The movie they discuss here is Rolling Thunder (1977) starring William Devane, Tommy Lee Jones, and Linda Haynes. It's a revenge picture that Quentin Tarantino recommends and saw it back in the day on a double feature with Enter the Dragon and he said that it was better than Enter the Dragon. Phillip and Chip have a long list of movies that Tarantino recommends and it's going to be a fun journey. So come back on January 20th, 2023 for the first episode. Then come back every week after for new episodes. So please subscribe, and thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingtarantinothepodcast/message

On this episode, Tom is having a chat with Dr. Jokūbas Žiburkus, who is a neuroscientist, innovator, speaker, entrepreneur, and an expert in neurological disorders, the endocannabinoid system and cannabinoids. The last time Dr. Jokūbas Žiburkus was on the show was on episode 9, where Dispensaries of the Future and what they might look like was discussed, as well as how the cannabis industry as a whole has been developing. However, this episode focuses on the science behind cannabis, and especially the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids and terpenes. So, even if science is not really your area of expertise or interest, I still highly recommend giving this episode a listen, as it is essential to understand the cannabis plant and how it interacts with the human body if you want to be successful in the cannabis industry. Other topics discussed:What are cannabinoids? What are phytocannabinoids? What are terpenes? What are CB1 and CB2 receptors and how do they differ from each other? How is the runner's high connected to the endocannabinoid system? Why was the endocannabinoid system only discovered in 1992?Why does cannabis only synthesize the acidic form of cannabinoids? Why does CBD prefer to interact with serotonin receptors rather than cannabinoid receptors?Who is Dr. Lumír Hanuš and Dr. William Devane? Can the acidic form of THC get me high?Is the DEA and FDA in the US finally opening up to cannabis research? Why is research on cannabis conducted by dispensaries only now becoming possible? Why are cannabis products not very well labelled? Why is there a lack of validation of hemp and cannabis-derived products? What are the 3 major cannabinoids found in cannabis, and how do they interact with CB1 receptors? Why is it so difficult to get cannabis-derived pharmaceutical medicine approved and produced? Why do plants from the same strain vary so much depending on where and how they are grown? What is the sense of smell, and how is it linked to the limbic system? What is the entourage effect?Links:Website - www.adendox.comLinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/company/adendox/ Related Podcast Episodes:Other Episode with Dr. Jokūbas Žiburkus - #9 - Dispensaries of the Future

“Is it safe?” If that question sounds eerily familiar to you spoken through a deep German accent, then you've experienced this movie before, and if not, then you're in for ONE hell of a ride! That dialogue is spoken by the late, great Sir Laurence Olivier delivering one of his finest latter career performances and also receiving an Oscar nomination for his work. Dustin Hoffman is the main star however as the titular character, a marathon runner/grad student who inadvertently gets involved in a nasty plot involving diamonds, torture, and former Nazi officers now walking among us….in 1976 mind you. It also co-stars ‘70's icon Roy Scheider along with William Devane and Marthe Keller. Directed by John Schlesinger and written by William Goldman. Listen In; You all know efficacy is very important to me so I went to the source. Listen to this article By Leafly written December 13,2016. This is an interview with DR. Lumir Hanus Who Discovered the First Endocannabinoid2017 marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most important discoveries in cannabinoid science. On March 24, 1992, Lumír Hanuš, a Czech analytical chemist working in Israel with American pharmacologist William Devane, isolated the first known endocannabinoid in the human brain. They named it anandamide, after the Sanskrit word for joy or bliss. Both researchers were working—and Mr. Hanuš still is—at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, on the team of Raphael Mechoulam, the world’s leading expert on cannabinoids. Nearly three decades earlier, in 1964, Mechoulam became the first to isolate tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC.“It has become clear that the healing potential of the whole plant is stronger than isolated compounds on their own.”The discovery of anandamide confirmed that the human brain produces cannabinoids of its own, which bind with cannabinoid receptors throughout the brain and body. Evidence suggests these cannabinoid receptors are involved in motor coordination, memory processing, control of appetite, pain modulation, neuroprotection, and more.In the years to follow, thousands of studies have been conducted on the endocannabinoid system and on cannabinoids of all stripes. Meanwhile, additional cannabinoids continue to be discovered. This podcast consist of three very important medical research papers I would like to share with you to understand Cannabinoids (CBD) - (THC) - (CBG) - (CBN), and more. This week on Total Movie Recall, we watch the first Manic Pixie Dream Girl ever on screen, who is not a girl at all, but is most decidedly a woman. It's the perfect post-2020 movie, and not just because of the constant suicides. It's twee and precious and we absolutely loved it. Harold & Maude (1971) d. Hal Ashby w. Colin Higgins Music by: Cat Steven (Yusuf Islam) Starring: Ruth Gordon Bud Cort Vivian Pickles Cult classic pairs Cort as a dead-pan disillusioned 20-year-old obsessed with suicide and a loveable Gordon as a fun-loving 80-year-old eccentric. In the eighteenth episode of Season 3 (Manifest Destiny) Kyle is joined by script supervisor Katy Baldwin and fellow podcaster Ben Thelen (of the Dead Reckoner podcast) to discuss the autumnal, wintery anti-western that utilized the genre's tropes of the self-made man and the American idea of self-determination as a cosmic joke in Robert Altmans McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we're trying something new. This is the first episode of what we are calling The Final Frame. Here we will dissect the final film of a great, well-respected filmmaker, wrapped in the context of said filmmaker's entire career. Our first subject: Alfred Hitchcock. His final film: Family Plot, starring Karen Black, William Devane, Barbara Harris, and Bruce Dern. Released in 1976, the loose thriller-comedy was received warmly enough, though the raves were few and far between. The film performed admirably, though one wagers it has been mostly lost in the ocean of great works by the director. Only four years later, Hitchcock would pass away as he prepared to film a spy thriller entitled The Short Night, a project we briefly speak on as well. The idea was pitched to us by friend of the show Nate Washburn - creator and host of “The Classic Hollywood Movie You Should Know” - and he joins us to dig into Family Plot, who was almost cast in the picture (Pacino!), and how Hitchcock and Christopher Nolan may be similar (maybe not). Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor. We are also now on Spotify and Stitcher. Enjoy!

There's a strange alchemy at work in Rolling Thunder (Flynn, 1977). We start with two subgenres that really flourished in the seventies – the Vietnam homecoming and the revenge mission. William Devane turns up that tension by giving as tightly controlled a performance as we've seen from him. Tommy Lee… The post Episode 133 – Rolling Thunder appeared first on The Magic Lantern.

The Bad News Bears is a 1976 American sports comedy film directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Bill Lancaster. It stars Walter Matthau and Tatum O'Neal.
The 1970s were a gritty time in American movies, and no more so than the '77 war-hero-turned-revenge-seeker thriller "Rolling Thunder." Charlie and Eric get deep into the film that turns William Devane into a claw-handed killer and features tons of classic character actors assembled for a showdown in Mexico. Listen now.

This week we’re talking gritty, slow-burn, 70s revenge shit, because our movie of the week is the Paul Schrader-penned, William Devane-starring ROLLING THUNDER (1977). Along the way we fantasize about living in torture sheds of our own, we praise ‘Automatic Slim’ for being one of the greatest bad guy names of all-time, and we celebrate not only the big iconic moment of this movie—the hook hand to the dick—but we also tip our glasses of Wild Turkey to song bird Denny Brooks and his emotional powerhouse of a country theme for the film, ‘San Antone.’
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Dark Knight's theatrical release, episode 47 of The Electric Shadows Podcast has gone big. Across four hours, Robs Daniel and Wallis and Bat-expert Ian Bird discuss Nolan's landmark trilogy. Plus, a wider discussion of the Caped Crusader in comic books and on the small screen, both animated and live action. Our trio delve deep into the Bat cave, covering a range of Bat chat. From Nolan's career, to the making of the trilogy, Nolan's influences, the impact of Christian Bale's Batman, Heath Ledger's Joker and Tom Hardy's Bane, and the difficult-to-repeat legacy the films left behind. Not that the discussion is just a rhapsody. Ian and the Robs discuss some of the brickbats thrown at the trilogy, particularly the divisive The Dark Knight Rises. There's even disagreement in the discussion. Rob Daniel champions the epic sweep of the third instalment, Ian Bird is unconvinced. Elsewhere, the episode goes into Batman 66, Tim Burton's Batmans, the campy collapse of Batman & Robin and the what-might-have-been of Darren Aronofsky and Frank Miller's aborted reboot. But wait, there's more. Ian takes us to the beginnings of the Batman and troubling question of authorship around those creators who were recognised and those who were not so fortunate. The thorny issue of female representation in comics and comic book movies is tackled, along with the notorious tendency of fridging female characters. And there is more. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is compared to what Nolan did with his trilogy. Somewhere Hollywood great William Devane will try to sell you gold. It all makes sense when woven together. Alongside the talk, there is a liberal (some might say undisciplined) use of illustrative clips to further celebrate the legacy of The Dark Knight movie, this incredible trilogy, and the enduring appeal of the Caped Crusader character. If you are left wanting more at the end of this Batpod, we strongly recommend you go to Mr Carapace. Here, Ian delivers addendum thoughts on Batman, how it relates to Matt Wagner's classic comic Grendel, and more fascinating insight into comic book creation in general. It's a big episode to be sure. But, we trust there is plenty of brain food (and humour dessert) to keep you entertained. Here… we…go….
So this is our Saint Patrick's Day episode...released on Mother's Day. In May. Almost 2 months to the day later. First and foremost, thank you to all the loving mother's out there. You have more than just a tough job. Without you, there is no life. Or terrible movies. Secondly, your support is and has always been great. But if you haven't yet, would you consider giving us a review and a follow if you've liked anything about what goes on here? You can do that in the following places: Facebook // Twitter // iTunes // Podbean // Stitcher // tunein // and more. Just Google The Upchuck Theater and you'll find us! This is the greatest compliment you can give us, and the thing that will help us out the most! In this episode, Dustin's all tuna pouch diet goes off the rails, Rob gets lost in between every McDonalds in a 10 mile radius, Aaron is absent for the whole thing and an Irish guy takes his place who has no idea about what they call things over in Ireland (truck? lorry?). We review The SiFi original film Red Clover with Billy Zane and William Devane, and Unclucky Charms, starring giant breasts. Check out the shining gem of both films Masuimi Max here.
As we celebrate this year's G.I. Film Festival we thought we'd share some highlights from previous years. As with every day, World Footprints is proud to pay tribute to our nation’s heroes--our men and women in uniform, and the Hollywood patriots who support them. From the red carpet of the 2011 G.I. Film Festival in Washington DC, we will share our conversations with three award-winning actors: Gary Sinise, William Devane and Lou Diamond Phillips. We also met award-winning filmmaker Rodney Ray and budding filmmaker Chris Loverro. The GI Film Festival is the first film festival in the nation to exclusively celebrate the successes and sacrifices of the service member through the medium of film. Then we’ll chat with actor Sean Kanan who is best known for his role as Deacon Sharpe on The Young and the Restless. Sean joins us to talk about his journey from the mid-west to Hollywood and his travels with the USO.

For our newest episode, Jinx welcomes filmmaker Padraig Reynolds to the show. Mr. Reynolds, who wrote and directed 2011’s Rites of Spring and the new IFC Midnight release The Devil’s Dolls, has chosen one of his favorite movies to chat about - Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. With its oppressive tone, unrelenting tension and bursts of horrific violence, Texas Chain Saw inspires a talk on its effectiveness as a horror film, its sequels, and the various layers to be found within the film’s tale. There are also digressions aplenty, which include discussions on the films of Rob Zombie, how underrated the Friday the 13th remake is, and why William Devane should really work more often than he does. It’s a great chat with a fantastic guest on a brilliant film, and it’s one we hope you enjoy! Be sure to subscribe to our show on iTunes, leave feedback, tell your friends about us, check out our YouTube show, use the Amazon links below to purchase the Texas Chain Saw movies and Mr. Reynolds’ film Rites of Spring, and give us a yell on Facebook and Twitter. Two movies based on The Hunter by Donald E. Westlake under the pen name Richard Stark brought Westlake's most famous character, Parker, to the silver screen, but they wouldn't be actually called Parker. Westlake famously protected the character and the name Parker wouldn't be used until after his death when Jason Statham starred in a movie title after the titular character. Point Blank (1967) with Lee Marvin starring as Walker/Parker in a very ethereal adaptation of the novel alongside Angie Dickinson, Keenan Wynn, Caroll O'Connor, and John Vernon was the first to adapt the novel, although now in a contemporary late 60's setting. Near the dawn of the millennium Mel Gibson would star in another contemporary take on the novel in Payback (1999) co-starring Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, David Paymer, Deborah Kara Unger, William Devane, Lucy Liu, Kris Kristofferson, and James Coburn. While adapting the same material, these two films are very different. Invasion of the Remake is the only place where Lee Marvin will be fighting Mel Gibson to see which is the better Parker. This episode is dedicated in the memory of Darwin Cooke who passed away only two days prior to the recording of this episode. He adapted many of the Parker novels into graphic novel form and did them with a passion for the character that may have only been rival to that of Westlake himself. He will be missed. We don't ask for money for the podcast currently but if you enjoyed this episode donate a few bucks to the American or Canadian Cancer Society. In Darwin Cooke's own words "F*ck Cancer!", so let's help put an end to it. Thanks. Also please spread the word about the podcast by sharing, and re-posting to your friends.
