Hey there Rude Crew I trust all is well. Again it's been a couple minutes since I posted, a lot has been going on in my life and 2023 has not been the kindest year to me, more on that another time.  Anyway back in May we celebrated Mother's Day here in North America. Stranger Cole doesn't recall a time before he started singing and writing music; it was always a part of his life. As a teenager in Jamaica in the early 60s, he took several of his songs to record producer Duke Reid, who liked his songwriting, but not his voice. He had Eric Monty Morris sing Stranger's song "In and Out The Window." After the song became a hit, he let Stranger sing a few of his songs. The next two, "Rough and Tough" and "When You Call My Name" (With Patsy Todd) were also big hits. These songs are STILL well-known songs from this era. The hits kept on coming for Stranger with "Uno Dos Tres" (With Ken Boothe), "Bangarang" (The first recorded-reggae song), Yeah Yeah Baby (With Patsy Todd) and many more. This week we are honored to speak with Jamaican ska icon, Stranger Cole. We talk about his vast and fascinating history with music, which includes playing with The Skatalites, performing at the Sombrero Club (featured in the 1964 BBC documentary, This Is Ska), working with Duke Reid, and how he stumbled into singing the first reggae song.  We also talk about his move to Toronto, Canada in the 70s, where he opened the Kensington Market record store Roots Records. We talk about the recording of his debut LP, "Forward" In The Land Of The Sunshine, and we ask what it's been like traveling all over the world in recent years, and getting backed by young and eager, ska-studious bands wherever he travels. He also explains how doing "rewinds" makes for a better live show.  Support the show

Supernova International Ska Festival started in 2013 as a house show that got so big, it was moved to a local brewery. Though it took a few years before it got the name Supernova, and that first show wasn't even a festival; just a kick-ass show with Chris Murray and King Django. Every year, Supernova has grown. 2023 is looking to be the biggest and best version of the festival to date with acts from all over the world like Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Fishbone, The Dualers, Don Letts, Stranger Cole, The Planet Smashers, Catbite, Out Of Control Army, and so much more. Today we talk about all things Supernova with co-founder Tim Receveur (He founded the festival with his wife April) and creative director Mike DeMatteo. We talk about the festival's history and dig into what people can expect at this year's festival. We also chat about some fun stories from Supernova's previous festivals. And there are plenty of fun stories there! We talk about Derrick Morgan's epic 2017 performance, 2020's quarantine edition (fundraiser for Alpha Boys School), and how Taylor Morden managed to film several interviews for Pick It Up - Ska In The 90s at the festival in 2018 during a storm. We also talk about Hepcat playing the festival (Their first east coast concert in decades!), the creation of the Rude Girl Revue and Tim lets us know how he managed to get Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra to headline this year's festival.   Support the show

The fascinating thing about fashion is that it isn't always just because one person (or a group of "elites") said that it is cool to wear now, there are movements that shape style as we know it today. Growing up I saw a ton of girls sporting Chelsea haircuts and others rocking Betty bangs (I was the latter), as much as I admired these girls fashion and style I never really dove into the history as to why. So here is this weeks brief history lesson on the iconic haircuts and a rocksteady playlist to go with it!  Find me on Instagram under Napalm Nanny and The Shack  1. Raymond Harper. Ska-Ta-Brain   2. Recorded on April 3rd, 2021 In this final episode of the series, Josh and Aaron go through some of the recent years for The Prizefighters and observe some interesting encounters. Aaron describes a lengthy drive with a tow truck driver after a van mishap and how music can create connections among strangers. They examine an evolving music landscape, and how upcoming musicians may have to adapt to it, especially in the year of covid. Notable shows and tours with Stranger Cole, Millicent "Patsy" Todd, and Charlie Organaire are recalled, and how much effort was put into recreating their classic tracks. As the band has moved forward, members have changed, but Aaron has openly welcomed each variation of the line up. A note from Josh: Thank you to everyone that took part in this project. The band members for taking the time out of their day to talk with me. Jeni Larson for helping me write most of the descriptions and editing the episodes. I spoke with Moisty Atsushi a ska musician based in Vietnam who is originally from Japan. He is friends with Monica Welander ( Episode 251) which is how we connected. Moisty traveled from the UK to Singapore as a touring musician without the use of an airplane. After playing countless gigs, events and festivals, he gained a reptuation of being a person of interest in Reggae in New Zealand. Atsushi was offered to work with overseas artists in New Zealand. He managed to help Chris Murray's tour in New Zealand, promote the film “Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae” by bringing Stranger Cole and DJ Mossman (music directer of the film) on tour. Moisty records with the intent of creating a retro sound similar to original reggae/ska records. The idea is to explore all the musical types from the mid 1950s through to the early 1970s that shaped Rock and Soul for the years that followed. From New Breed, Popcorn and Doo Wop to Ska, Northern Soul and Maximum RnB. If you don't know what those terms mean then stick with us and we'll guide you from the roots, up the tree, to the labyrinth of branches that grew the music of the present day... Pop withstanding. Cole was born in #Kingston, Jamaica in July 26 1942 and nicknamed "Stranger" by his family, as they considered that he didn't resemble any member of his family. Cole was initially successful as a songwriter, writing "In and out the Window", which was a hit for Eric "Monty" Morris. This success gave him the chance to make his recording debut in 1962, instantly finding success with singles such as "Rough and Tough" and "When You Call My Name" (a duet with Patsy Todd) for producer Arthur "Duke" Reid. Further success followed with singles for Reid through to the mid-#1960s, and he also worked with other producers at this time, including Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (a duet with Ken Boothe on "Worlds Fair"), and Prince Buster. Further duets included recordings with Gladstone Anderson (on "Just Like a River") and Hortense Ellis, the tendency to record duets apparently due to his shyness when it came to singing alone. In the late 1960s and early #1970s he recorded with several producers, including Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Sonia Pottinger. These included further material with Todd as "Stranger & Patsy." In 1971 he emigrated to England, where he toured extensively, and moved on again to Canada in 1973, settling in Toronto

Ken Boothe OD (born 22 March 1948) is a #Jamaican vocalist known for his distinctive vibrato and timbre. Boothe achieved an international reputation as one of #Jamaica's finest vocalists through a series of crossover hits that appealed to both #reggae fans and mainstream audiences. Ken Boothe was born in Denham Town, #Kingston.  Boothe cites singer Owen Gray as a major influence, particularly after hearing Gray perform the Leiber and Stoller rhythm and blues version of the #1920s blues standard, "Kansas City Blues", written by E L Bowman and notably performed by Jim Jackson in 1927. Stranger Cole, who was an established artist and neighbor to Boothe, had already worked with Boothe on the Sir Percy sound system as well as recording two songs for independent producer Sir Mike though Boothe's major breakthrough came in 1963 after Cole arranged an audition at #Duke Reid's studio. The audition with Cole and Boothe performing the song "Unos Dos Tres" was a success and Boothe and Cole formed the duo 'Stranger & Ken' with the first track released by them being "Hush Baby" on the B-side of Cole's #Island Records single "Last Love".

He then performed with stars such as Jimmy Tucker, Winston Samuels, Laurel Aitken, and much more. Charles also performed for Bim and Bam, Jamaica's leading comedians at the time.He performed on recordings of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, The Tenors, Derrick Morgan, Milly Small, Toots and the Maytals, Phyllis Dillon, Stranger Cole, Lord Creator and many more top Jamaican artists. Cole was born in Jamaica in 1945 and nicknamed "Stranger" by his family, as they considered that he didn't resemble any member of his kin. Further success  with singles for Reid in the mid-1960s, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (a duet with Ken Boothe on "Worlds Fair"), and Prince Buste, Gladstone Anderson (on "Just Like a River") and Hortense Ellis. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he recorded with several producers, including Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Sonia Pottinger. These included further material with Todd as Stranger & Patsy.   In 1971 he emigrated to England, where he toured extensively, and moved on again to Canada in 1973, settling in Toronto. He worked as a machinist in the Tonka Toy factory in Toronto and later opened the first Caribbean record shop in Toronto His first album, "Forward in the Land of Sunshine", was released in 1976, with a handful of further albums released over the next ten years, on his own label. In 2006, Cole released his first album in twenty years, Morning Train, a collaboration with Jah Shaka. Cole is featured in the 2009 documentary Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae, in which he and other stars of the rocksteady era reunited to record a new album of the same name, released in August 2009. Cole's son, Squiddly, followed him into a music career, working as a drummer for artists including Ziggy Marley , Amy Winehouse, Mutabaruka, and many more. www.crsradio.com ,www.caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com  661-467-2407

Mighty, mighty sounds that shook the dance floors of Kingston and London and soundtracked the original skinhead scene. This is unrepentant party music, and the crackles and vinyl fizz you'll hear attest to the many years some of these records have spent moving crowds.
