THE HEART OF ROCK ‘N' ROLL—There's a saying about the Velvet Underground's first album: it didn't sell a lot of copies but everyone who bought it went on to form a band. Not everyone who read Creem went on to form a band, but almost everyone who ever wrote about rock music in a significant way has a connection to Creem. Founded in Detroit in 1969 by Barry Kramer, Creem was a finger in the eye to the more established Rolling Stone. Creem called itself “America's Only Rock ‘n' Roll Magazine” and its cheeky irreverence matched its devotion to its infamous street cred. Punk, new wave, heavy metal, alternative, indie were all championed at Creem.Writers and editors who worked for Creem read like a who's who of industry legends: Lester Bangs. Dave Marsh. Robert Christgau. Greil Marcus. Patti Smith. Cameron Crowe. Jann Uhelszki. Penny Valentine. And on and on and on.The magazine stopped publishing in 1989 a few years after Barry's death. A documentary about Creem's heyday in 2020 helped lead to a resurrected media brand, founded by JJ Kramer, Barry's son, and launched in 2022. The copy on the first issue's cover: “Rock is Dead. Das Album "Let it Bleed" kam im November heraus, mit "Gimme Shelter" und "You can´t always get what you want" enthielt es gleich mehrere Klassiker der Band. It´s only Rock n Roll" (vom gleichnamigen Album). Peters Playlist für die wilden 70er: Single: Honky Tonk Women (7/1969) Let It Bleed (1969): Gimme shelter, Live with me, Let it bleed, Midnight Rambler, You can't always get what you want Sticky Fingers (1971): Brown sugar, Wild horses, Can't you hear me knocking, Sister Morphine, Moonlight mile Exile On Mainstreet (1972): Tumbling dice, Sweet Virginia, Torn and frayed, Happy, Let it loose, Shine a light, Soul survivor Goats Head Soup (1973): Coming down again, Angie, Winter, Scarlet (feat. Jimmy Page/DeLuxe Edition 2020) It's Only Rock'n'Roll (1974): Ain't too proud to beg, Till the next goodbye Black And Blue (1976): Hot stuff, Memory motel, Fool to cry Some Girls (1978): Miss you, Some girls, Far away eyes, Beast of burden
Ronnie Wood has been a prominent music figure in British Blues Rock since the late 1960s. At a time when The Beatles were at their height, Wood lived in the basement of Ringo Starr's house near Grosvenor Square in London with Jimi Hendrix while John & Yoko lived upstairs. At the same time, Mick Jagger lives in the "mews" at the back of the house. From The Birds, to The Jeff Beck Group (feat: Rod Stewart), to The Faces (Ian McLagan, Kenny Jones, Ronnie Lane, Rod Stewart, & Ronnie Wood), to replacing Mick Taylor in the Rolling Stones (1975), Ron Wood has mixed and mingled with rock royalty for more than six decades. Nathan and Eppy complete the Wiard World Tour with this two-parter, episodes 3 and 4 from season 6: Only Rock 'n Roll Will Never Die. Show favorite George Loros guest stars as Eddie, a prison buddy of Jim's now working for rock star Tim Ritchie. He reaches out to Rockford to find a missing member of Ritchie's entourage, but the mystery of what happened mostly backgrounds the (anti) romance of Eddie with reporter Whitney Cox. Jim navigates Eddie's neuroses, an on-going court case, the mob and the whims of a rockstar who has it all in this two-parter that we find almost too relaxed in its storytelling (even though the character stuff is Very Good). We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Covering our non-Rockford media, games and life chatter, Plus Expenses is available via our Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/twohundredaday) at ALL levels of support. Em 2017, o EP Down to the River, mistura de "blues, gospel, soul, bluegrass e americana. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/garimpandobolachas/message

As the Florida governor shows his bully stripes, Inside the Hive asks what his 2024 chances could be. Plus, ‘Creem' rides again Inside the Ron DeSantis Plan to Overthrow Trump and Trumpism This week Vanity Fair published Gabe Sherman's profile of Florida Governor and would-be Trump slayer Ron DeSantis [https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2022/09/ron-desantis-the-making-and-remaking-of-a-maga-heir]. On Inside the Hive, Joe Hagan and Emily Jane Fox discuss whether DeSantis's aggressive push for national prominence—coming as Trump's legal peril mounts and a slew of new Trump books hits stores this fall—signal the last throes of the Ex-POTUS' political potency. The answer, if DeSantis has anything to do with it, is clearly yes. But as DeSantis' polling takes a hit following his controversial immigration stunt, the next question becomes: Can a charmless bully survive the spotlight? Plus: A conversation with J.J. Kramer, who has revived his father's storied rock magazine Creem decades after it stopped publishing. The irreverent 1970s magazine still bills itself as “America's Only Rock 'n Roll Magazine,” but does rock and roll still matter? And what does it mean in 2022? Kramer, who inherited the magazine when he was four years old, has an idea—and big dreams. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Hey, welcome to WASTOIDS With Jaan Uhelszki of the legendary CREEM Magazine. Founded in Detroit in 1969, CREEM covered rock & roll irreverently and with a wickedly funny style. It closed up shop in 1989, but 30 years later, a new documentary film, 2019's CREEM: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine, helped to reignite interest in the publication, and now, CREEM has returned in full force over at CREEM.com. Not only is the site home to a remarkable archive—featuring stories by Lester Bangs, Cameron Crowe, Patti Smith, Greil Marcus, Lisa Robinson, Susan Whitall, Dave Marsh, Robert Christgau, our guest Jaan, and so many others—it's also home to brand new features, interviews, articles, and music recommendations. We launched WASTOIDS last year for a lot of reasons, but one of the main ones is that it feels increasingly like music fans are looking for original and fun places to discover new music. CREEM was one of our primary inspirations. Uhelszki joins us for stories about the pot-fueled “cult of CREEM,” her role in its return, seeing Big Star live, and that time she got up on stage with KISS in full regalia. Thanks for listening. Call 1-877-WASTOIDS.

Long before Scott's instagram handle had me laughing my ass off every day, he put out a documentary called "Salad Days" which took an in-depth look at one of (if not THE) most important music scene's in US history. We talk in depth about his process and approach to this film, his evolution as a teenage fan to collaborator with heroes like Ian MacKaye, Wayne Kramer, Brian Baker, Henry Rollins, Dave Grohl, and beyond. How his love of music journalism helped him capture the magic of Creem magazine in his follow-up documentary: "Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine", all the way through his new project that sounds simply incredible. If you are a fan of Minor Threat, Bad Brains, MC5, and real music then this episode is for you. Be Sure to follow Scott at his Salad Days page on instagram as well as his new project at @somethingbetterchange_doc There is a ton more to this conversation. Everything from his early days in Clutch, to the current state of music journalism, unique interactions with punk-rock icons, and so much more over at the Rigs of Dad Patreon Page where you can also hear more interviews with previous guests, patreon exclusives, and beyond! Ian dropped some new tunes over at The Interesting Times Gang's Bandcamp that you should click. Big shout out to the homies at www.shearrevival.com as well... Take care of yourself. We're joined by the founder of Harp magazine and director, Scott Crawford (Salad Days, Creem: America's Only Rock & Roll Magazine). Crucial matters discussed: the brilliance of the Bad Brains; growing up in the Washington, D.C. punk and hardcore scene; talking or not talking to Ted Nugent about Creem magazine; his time in the publishing big leagues at Harp magazine; an alternate universe where Fugazi signs with a major label; and much more.
No matter how unstable things may seem, no matter how uncertain the future may appear, we can run to the One and Only Rock that is able to shelter us forever.

Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Chapin over Zoom video!“Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did.” — Ken Kragen, Harry Chapin’s manager and co-creator of USA for Africa and Hands Across AmericaThe incredible life of Harry Chapin can be seen like never before in, Harry Chapin: When In Doubt, Do Something. This documentary, directed by Rick Korn and released by Greenwich Entertainment (Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President, Creem: America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind), follows the renowned GRAMMY-nominated folk singer from childhood - spent under the shadow of his jazz drummer father - throughout his tragically short life and captures the up-and-down spirit of one of folk’s great humanitarians. The film’s theatrical release is set for October 16 on World Food Day — a fitting coincidence for a man who co-founded the influential hunger non-profit WhyHunger.Told through archival footages and new interviews, When In Doubt, Do Somethingexplores like never before the key moments in Chapin’s life, including performing with his brothers and working on the Academy Award-nominated documentary Legendary Champions, to his solo success with hits like “Taxi,” “W.O.L.D.” and “Cat’s In The Cradle” and his tireless philanthropic work, which included his efforts with WhyHunger and a seemingly endless run of benefit performances, all of which led to him being posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. This documentary paints a new picture of the singer-songwriter who used his fame as a launching point to help others and influence politics. It features testimonials from Chapin's family (including Tom Chapin and Steve Chapin), as well as peers including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Kenny Rogers, Robert Lamm (Chicago), Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Pat Benatar, Bob Geldof, Ken Kragen, longtime bassist John Wallace, and WhyHunger co-founder Bill Ayres. “Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did.” These words kick off the debut trailer of When In Doubt, Do Something: The Harry Chapin Story. Watch the trailer, which premiered this morning on Rolling Stone: https://bit.ly/32y9dHsA portion of proceeds from the film will go to both WhyHunger and The Harry Chapin Foundation. The film was produced by Korn, S.A. Baron, and Chapin’s son, Jason Chapin.Harry Chapin sold over 16 million records, had 14 hit singles, and garnered two GRAMMY nominations. In 1977 he was a key participant in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger. In 1986, he was posthumously awarded the GRAMMY President’s Merit Award. He was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2011. About WhyHungerFounded in 1975 by the late Harry Chapin and radio DJ Bill Ayres, WhyHunger believes a world without hunger is possible. They provide critical resources to support grassroots movements and fuel community solutions rooted in social, environmental, racial and economic justice. A four-star rated charity by Charity Navigator, WhyHunger is working to end hunger and advance the human right to nutritious food in the U.S. and around the world. Few would seriously debate that "It's Only Rock 'n Roll" is not one of the very best albums by the Rolling Stones, but it's still an interesting record to discuss for at least two reasons. One, it marked a turning point in the band, being the final album with Mick Taylor and the first produced by the Glimmer Twins. Also though...is a "mediocre" Stones album really mediocre? Sorry Charlie and Bill. Should have talked about you more, even though Bill didn't play on nearly all of it. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/welldisguised/message

Boy Howdy! “Creem: America’s Only Rock & Roll Magazine” is an amazing documentary that provides a magical look into the mythical world of the music rag that launched in 1969 in Detroit, Michigan (about a year after “Rolling Stone”), and inspired countless musicians (including Metallica’s Kirk Hammet and the Chili Peppers Chad Smith) to start bands. Creem epitomized the sex, drugs and rock & roll culture of the music industry in the 70s, helped propel KISS to rock star status, counted Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed as fans, and unleashed a wild and disruptive newsroom into the homes of obsessed teens every month! Legendary journalist Jaan Uhelszki, director Scott Crawford, and JJ Kramer (son of Creem founder Barry Kramer) pull back the curtain and take us between the pages of “Creem!”
”CREEM: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine" is a new documentary that tells the behind-the-scenes story of the legendary and controversial music publication, which turned 50 last year. Founding editor Jaan Uhelszki, documentary director Scott Crawford, and JJ Kramer, documentary producer and son of CREEM co-founder Barry Kramer, join us to talk about it.
Part 2 of 2 podcasts, devoted to the release of the new rock doc, Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine. In this episode, we talk with Jaan Uhelszki, one of the founding editors at Creem and one of the first women to write nationally about rock n' roll. It's a fascinating road trip through the backyard of the Creem offices in the 70's. They were a group of outlaw writers, living in cramped quarters 24-7 and determined to reach rock readers with the unvarnished truth. Along the way, Jaan reveals rich stories on legendary misfits like Lester Bangs, Dave Marsh and Creem publisher, Barry Kramer. There probably isn't a rock icon that Jaan hasn't interviewed. In the 70 minute conversation (which does not drop in attention level), Jaan talks in great detail about Lou Reed, Neil Young, Ronnie Van Zant, Kiss, Ted Nugent, to name a few. Hear what it felt like, both intellectually and emotionally, to cover these seminal artists firsthand. Check show times and streaming info for the new Creem movie at www.creemmovie.com or their Facebook site.

In his book Rock ’n’ Film: Cinema’s Dance with Popular Music, music historian David James explores how rock’s capacity for cultural empowerment and its usefulness as a driver of commerce and profit have been reproduced in various kinds of cinema: independent documentaries and concert films including Monterey Pop and Gimme Shelter; narrative films, such as King Creole and Privilege; and the experimental cinema of artists, like Kenneth Anger. In a June 22, 2019, lecture at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), James explored the rich legacy of cinema’s dance with popular music. Illustrating his talk with clips from classic rock films like Blackboard Jungle, A Hard Day’s Night, and many others, James shared with his BAMPFA audience how rock music was distinctive from other cultural developments of its era because of its multiracial appeal, anticipating and helping to precipitate the utopian ideals of the civil rights era and other left-wing movements. These transformative energies, James said, were channeled into a growing body of films that became important to the development of rock music — not just as delivery mechanisms of the new sound, but as engines for its production. Marquee musicians like Elvis and the Beatles found themselves able to experiment with new forms of creative expression in films that captured the exciting and transgressive spirit of their musical moment.James’ lecture was delivered in conjunction with an ongoing film series at BAMPFA inspired by his work, It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll, which runs through Aug. 31. The Freep Film Festival starts next week with a gala screening April 10 for “Boy Howdy! The Story of Creem Magazine” at the Fillmore Detroit. On today’s episode, we feature three great interviews to preview some of what’s on offer during the festivities, which run through April 14: JJ Kramer, co-producer of “Boy Howdy!” JJ is the son of Barry Kramer, the founder and publisher of Creem Magazine, which launched in Detroit’s Cass Corridor in 1969 and billed itself as “America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine.” Steve Byrne, the executive director of the Freep Film Festival and the arts and entertainment editor by day for the Detroit Free Press. And finally, Jennifer Washington, maker of the documentary “God Said Give ‘Em Drum Machines: The Story of Detroit Techno,” which explores that genre’s roots in the 1980s. You can read about all this year’s films and find all the showtimes at freepfilmfestival.com. Los temas que reseñamos hoy son: ‘If You Can't Rock Me', 'Luxury', 'Dance Little Sister', 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg' y 'It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It)'. Honk si presenta come una raccolta di ben 36 canzoni made by Mick Jagger & Co. uscite tra il 1971 e il 2016: da "Brown sugar" a "Start me up", passando per "Tumbling dice", "Angie", "It's only rock'n'roll (But I like it)" e "Emotional rescue”.
