An oil and gas lease sale is scheduled in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for June. The auction of drilling rights is mandated in federal law, but also reflects the Trump administration's commitment to promoting energy development in the state. The response from Indigenous residents that live in or near the refuge is mixed, as the Alaska Desk’s Alena Naiden from our flagship station KNBA reports. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced this month it will hold a lease sale in the nation's largest wildlife refuge, in the northeastern corner of Alaska. The piece of ANWR that has been the subject of passionate dispute for decades is the Coastal Plain, a swath along the Beaufort Sea that potentially has oil and gas reserves. The only community within the refuge is Kaktovik, an Iñupiaq village of about 300 people. Kaktovik Mayor Nathan Gordon Jr. says resource development in the refuge means economic opportunity because the regional government, the North Slope Borough, taxes oil and gas companies. “The taxes that come from the development pay for our schools, our water system, our sewer system. It pays for everything that has meaning in our lifestyle and protection and safety.” ANWR provides habitat for migratory birds and polar bears. And the Coastal Plain specifically is the calving grounds for the Porcupine Caribou Herd. Gordon says he believes development within the refuge will not interfere with wildlife. “With restrictions in place, it’s already set in stone for us to have safe development with our animals.” But opponents of the project are concerned that gravel roads, drilling, and seismic exploration can harm caribou, especially during their vulnerable calving period. The Gwich'in community of Arctic Village is located right outside ANWR to the south. Faith Gemmill lives in Fairbanks, but is from Arctic Village and has family there. “Imagine oil development in their core calving area. It’s going to … devastate our herd.” Gemmill says caribou support food security, culture, spirituality, and economy for Gwich'in people, including the future generations. “Our way of life is reliant on the caribou. So in my opinion, (President Donald) Trump’s incessant drive to drill in this area is a form of cultural genocide of the Gwich’in.” If the upcoming lease sale is successful, it could still take years for a project to break ground. Additional reporting from Alaska Public Media’s Liz Ruskin Diné chef Justin Pioche, right, inspects ingredients as “Chopped” host Ted Allen watches during an episode from April 21, 2026. (Courtesy Food Network) “Chopped” is a Food Network show where four chefs compete in a race against time to make a three-course meal. The latest episode aired Tuesday night and featured an all-Indigenous lineup. As KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio reports, a Navajo chef took the honors. From Chicago to Montana, Indian Country's top cooks vied for the “Chopped” title, but two of them repped the Southwest including Chef Ray Naranjo, who comes from the Santa Clara Pueblo just north of Santa Fe, N.M. Justin Pioche lives on the Navajo Nation. The 2023 James Beard finalist for Best Chef in the Southwest co-owns Pioche Food Group, a high-end catering company. He plans on using the $10,000 cash prize to help pay for his own brick-and-mortar restaurant. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Sign up for our daily newsletter today. Thom Filicia steps Behind The Rope. Having just had Jai Rodriquez on the Pod, we figured it was a great time to continue our trip down memory lane from the early days of Bravo and share this epic chat we had with Thom. Queer Eye For the Straight Guy. Bravo Royalty. Thom takes us back to the beginning of how he got cast for Queer Eye by getting stuck in an elevator. Thom talks about the behind the scenes filming, producer involvement, and what he thought about the finished product once the show aired. He talks about how life changed once Queer Eye came out and catapulted him into the public eye. Of course we discuss cast mates Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, Ted Allen and Kyan Douglas. We discuss what Bravo was like in those early days, the evolution of the network, and Andy Cohen. Thom tells us stories from the vault about designing projects for celebrity clients such as JLO. Thom also chats RHOBH, RHONY and more Housewives! Of course, no discussion of Queer Eye would be complete without a nod to the current Netflix series and Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Tan France and Bobby Berk. @thomfilicia @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: IQBAR - TEXT VELVET to 64000 (Get 20% Off All IQBAR Products Plus Free Shipping) ROCKET MONEY - rocketmoney.com/velvetrope (Cancel Unwanted Subscriptions & Manage Expenses The Easy Way) FACTOR - factormeals.com/velvet50 (Use Code VELVET50 To Get 50% Off Your First Box) BRILLIANT EARTH - brilliantearth.com (Check Out All Of Their Beautiful Pieces) ADVERTISING INQUIRIES - Please contact David@advertising-execs.com MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. AmiSights: Financing the Future For Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
On today's episode, Ami Kassar interviews Scott Omelianuk, Editor in Chief of Inc. magazine and Inc.com, on his experience coming in as Editor in Chief just a few weeks before the pandemic hit. Mr. Omelianuk recently joined Inc. as Editor in Chief, where he oversees the brand's recognition programs, events, and content, and is charged with creating new lines of business to support the entrepreneurial community. Though in the role for less than a year, he has already redesigned Inc.'s digital and print properties, launched a data product for firms looking to invest in small businesses, partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on a series of SMB town halls and created its breakout Best in Business franchise. At the Stevens Institute of Technology—a U.S. News & World Report “Top 25 Innovation School”—he is a professor in the School of Business and Technology where he teaches marketing and entrepreneurship and serves as an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University's Venture Center. Prior to arriving at Inc., he advised start-ups and businesses in transition as a partner in HumanConsult.io, a consultancy at the intersection of content, commerce, and technology. There he employed the proprietary “Quid Si” methodology, a combination of rapid ideation, the lean canvas and transformation management to help businesses in transition develop strategic plans, sales and marketing strategies, investment theses and digital transitions. Additionally, he was co-founder of a wellness business for which he wrote the patent. Mr. Omelianuk is widely known for his 12-year tenure at This Old House, where, before its successful sale to private equity, he built a reputation as a creative strategist who took a beloved brand, polished its image, and built around it a tapestry of related businesses, including digital offshoots, Spanish-language TV, lead generation, affiliate revenue, licensed products, and a mobile game strategy. He oversaw English- and Spanish-language television shows, several websites, social channels and a magazine. In an intrapreneurial role at its parent company, Time Inc., he was a C-suite advisor, sought out partnerships and acquisitions and pioneered user-generated content, social video, AR, a mobile gaming strategy, lead generation and other now common digital technologies. Prior to This Old House Scott held senior positions in television, where he was variously an on-camera host and producer at Full Frontal Fashion and a partner at Kaufman Films, the creator of The Real Housewives franchise. Earlier in his career, Mr. Omelianuk was an architect of Esquire magazine's renaissance, increasing revenue 75 percent, overseeing brand licensing, and while there authored four books in the Things a Man Should Know franchise, which he created and then co-wrote with Chopped host Ted Allen. As a journalist, he has covered style internationally for GQ, been a columnist at Details and contributed to the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and other publications. Honored with Ad Age A-List and Media Vanguard awards, Scott is a sought-after speaker on entrepreneurship, marketing and branding, and often appears on television as a business, media and lifestyle expert. A graduate of Gettysburg College and the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, where he obtained an MS in Journalism, he sits on the board of the MIT Enterprise Forum or New York City. Recorded 01/08/2021.
The first time I used a vision board to manifest what I wanted, I noticed that it worked really fast. Unfortunately it was bringing me the literal pictures I had cut out of magazines, like an expensive yellow suit jacket, instead of what I really wanted, which was becoming a successful business woman like the one wearing the beautiful jacket. I immediately tore it down. My guest challenges the century-old teachings of manifesting, science, and positive thinking, creating a process that really works. Ted Allen, Food Network's Chopped, praises scripting as a “system of strategies to figure out what you really want your life to become, and to make it happen.” Royce understands the science behind his process, including quantum mechanics, the nature of time, and the fascinating world of memetics. Please join us Thursday to hear Royce talk about his scripting process which bridges the gap between science and spirituality and introduces an updated approach to New Thought.
A discussion with Ted Allen, host of Food Network's Chopped, and Queer Eye for the Straight guy alum.
Here's my theory just in case I don't get a chance to say it during the show: I think food has become more like sports. People kind of root for things. Ted Allen and Anthony Bourdain are more like sport stars than people whom you would seek out for actual cooking information. People go to Chelsea Market just because they know the Food Network is somewhere upstairs. And, because of that, there's a lot more pressure on food to be exciting. When you pick up the sports pages you want news, not just the same old same old. So, driven by that pulse and a group of media engines that flow alongside it, we always have new things to cheer for.
