Drummer Sim Cain played with the Rollins Band from 1987 until 1997. Before joining Rollins Band, Sim played in the instrumental trio Gone, alongside future Rollins Band bassist Andrew Weiss and Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn. He has also recorded with artists like David Poe, Marc Ribot, David Shea, and played in Elliott Sharp's Terraplane group. Cain appeared on Ween's 2004 album Quebec and performed with blues legend Hubert Sumlin in the early 2000s.
Terraplane is a blues record. We have mixed feelings about it, but it's got some bangers, and some true Southern Goth moments. Also, Japan, Mexico City, the pants are big again, and the most important question: Does Jesus have rizz?

David Bowie would leave the glam rock genre of his previous albums for a more soulful sound with his ninth studio album, Young Americans. This album features blue eyed soul, or what Bowie would refer to as "plastic soul." David Bowie moved to the United States in 1974 during a time when tax concerns were driving many artists out of the UK. He was living in New York City at the time, and starting production on the album in Philadelphia where he worked with guitarist Carlos Alomar. A funk guitarist, Alomar had worked as a session musician at the Apollo Theater and would become a collaborator and band leader for Bowie over the next decade. In addition to Carlos Alomar, Bowie worked on this album with a number of artists including Robin Clark, Ava Cherry, saxophonist David Sanborn, and a new musician named Luther Vandross. He would also collaborate on this album with ex-Beatle John Lennon who was recording in New York at the same time as Bowie's recording moved there. Bowie and Lennon had met previously at a party hosted by Elizabeth Taylor. Lennon collaborated with Bowie during his "lost weekend" period.Young Americans contains elements of soul, funk, and R&B, and was a deliberate attempt to garner more success in the U.S. market. It certainly achieved this result, though critics would deliver mixed reviews. The transition from glam rock to blue-eyed soul would not be one which all fans embraced, but David Bowie would follow his own creative muse. It would not be the last time we would see a significant stylistic change from Bowie. It was nevertheless a commercial success, going to number 9 on the US albums chart, remaining on the charts for almost a year.Rob brings us this funky example of “plastic soul.” Young AmericansThe title track was recorded in Philadelphia, and hit number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, Bowie's second-highest chart success to this date. Then unknown singer Luther Vandross conceived the backing vocal arrangement. The song provides impressions of American life through the eyes of an English man. David Sanborn provides the saxophone work.Across the UniverseThis cover of the Beatles song also found collaboration with Beatles' alumnus John Lennon. Backing vocals and guitar are provided by Lennon, who considered this song a better version than his own. Critics tend to disagree, as reviews on the Bowie version were primarily negative.FascinationThis track began as a jam by Luther Vandross entitled “Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)” which was performed before the Bowie concerts in 1974. When Vandross was retained from the “Diamond Dogs” tour, the two collaborated to create the song “Fascination.” The song was an homage to the Philadelphia funk sound.FameThis single hit number 1 on the US charts, the first Bowie song to do so. Composed by Bowie, Alomar, and Lennon, the high backing “Fame” vocalizations are provided by John Lennon. Bowie would describe it as a “nasty, angry” song directed at management with which he had previous issues. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ease On Down the Road by Consumer Rapport (from the motion picture The Wiz)A soulful take on The Wizard of Oz featured Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. STAFF PICKS:Judy Mae by Boomer Castleman Wayne initiates the staff picks with a controversial song that went to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100. The lyrics tell of a father to a 17 year-old girl who marries a woman half his age. When an affair ensures between the stepmother and the daughter, the father dies of an accident shortly thereafter. It feels like a racier version of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”Long Haired Country Boy by the Charlie Daniels BandBrian brings us a song about a guy with a very passive attitude about life. “I ain't asking for nobody for nuthin' that I can't get on my own. If you don't like the way I'm livin' you just leave this long-haired country boy alone.” It was off the second album from the CDB entitled “Fire on the Mountain.”When Will I Be Loved by Linda Ronstadt Bruce features Ronstadt doing a cover originally from the Everly Brothers in 1960. While the original peaked at number 8, Ronstadt's cover would go to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is a vocal trio between Ronstadt, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. Trampled Under Foot by Led Zeppelin Rob finishes the staff picks with a song John Paul Jones claims was inspired by Stevie Wonder's “Superstition.” The lyrics were inspired by blues artist Robert Johnson's “Terraplane Blues” from 1936. A Terraplane was a classic car that serves as a not-so-subtle source for sexual innuendo. It is off the band's double album, “Physical Graffiti.” COMEDY TRACK:Bertha Butt Boogie by The Jimmy Castor Bunch This funk novelty track went to number 16 on the US pop chart and number 22 on the US R&B chart.

Dr. Ken McLeod of Binghamton University shares a plan for energy efficient, high speed, ground transportation techncology called Terraplane
For the latest leg of their tour through rock and metal's highlights and lowlights the boys were given the brief of 'transport'. The rules were simple - the band name, album title or album cover had to have a demonstrable link to a form of transport. Like all the pod themes, it should have been easy. But then Steve and Rich hadn't factored in Mark's wide-ranging interpretation of what transport might actually mean, nor the fact that he failed to make the link between Steve's album choice and a well-known electric car brand. Eventually, though, they settled down to chew over the various merits - or otherwise - of three debut albums from three 1980s outfits who would go on to have varying degrees of success. First up was Def Leppard's 1980 cherry-popper On Through The Night - an album the band has since more or less airbrushed from their own history - and completely airbrushed from their live set. Which, according to Mark, gives a small insight into how fast and loose musicians can play with the loyalty of fans who were there at the start. Next in line was Terraplane's Black And White, a record that sowed the first seeds of what would set the band on the road to public affection once they rebuffed their label's attempts to turn them into Rick Springfield-esque pop rockers, changed their name to Thunder and dialled up the guitars. Finally, another of rock's finest debuts from Sacramento rockers Tesla and Mechanical Resonance, released in 1986. As Steve said - it's hard to imagine a time without the majesty of Modern Day Cowboy ...
Great to have Danny Bowes return to the CrowCast, for those not aware we first spoke with Danny months ago but sadly the audio wasn't usable for the Podcast, the episode is till available to watch via our YouTube channel. On this episode we catch up and see how Danny has been throughout the pandemic, we also chat about the stunning New Thunder releases 'All The Right Noises ' and the new book 'The First 50 years" thats in the works. This was a lovely laid back, comical episode jammed with so many entertaining stories. Thunder are an English hard rock band from London. Formed in 1989, the group was founded by former Terraplane members Danny Bowes (lead vocals), Luke Morley (guitar, backing vocals) and Gary 'Harry' James (drums), along with second guitarist and keyboardist Ben Mathews and bassist Mark "Snake" Luckhurst. Originally signed to EMI Records in the UK, the band released their debut album Backstreet Symphony in 1990, which reached number 21 on the UK Albums Chart and number 114 on the US Billboard 200. The 1992 follow-up Laughing on Judgement Day reached number 2, while both albums were certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). All nine singles released from the two albums reached the UK Singles Chart top 40.Luckhurst left the band in late 1992, and was replaced the following February by former Great King Rat bassist Mikael Höglund. The new lineup recorded only one studio album, Behind Closed Doors, which peaked at number 5 in the UK and spawned three UK top 40 singles. The 1995 compilation Their Finest Hour (And a Bit) reached number 22 in the UK and was certified silver by the BPI. Höglund left in 1996 and was replaced by Chris Childs, after Morley performed bass on fourth album The Thrill of It All, which reached the UK top 20. Thunder's 1998 live album Live reached number 35 on the UK Albums Chart, while the following year's fifth studio album Giving the Game Away reached number 49. The band broke up in early 2000 due to "outside business forces".After a brief hiatus, Thunder returned in 2002 and formed their own record label, STC Recordings. The band's sixth studio album Shooting at the Sun was released the following year, supported by the UK top 50 single "Loser". After three more new studio albums – 2005's The Magnificent Seventh, 2006's Robert Johnson's Tombstone and 2008's Bang! – Thunder decided to break up in 2009. Two years later, however, the group returned for a third active spell, scheduling a number of sporadic live shows over the following years. A tenth studio album, Wonder Days, was released on the earMusic label in 2015, giving the band their first UK top ten since 1995 when it peaked at number 9. Rip It Up followed in 2017, reaching a peak UK Albums Chart position of number 3.This has been edited from an episode from our weekly show that streams LIVE @ 9pm Every Tuesday on Facebook LIVE, TWITCH and YOUTUBE - https://youtu.be/wzZWwkzfx0U See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
A very central character of The Multiverse Blues is Hope, the delphine diva from another dimension. In this, the spring of 2021, I'm starting to regain a feeling of hope. My home has been finally been restored after the October sewage disaster. The lovely weather invites me to venture outside these four walls and see the wider world. I even have my first Covid vaccination scheduled for the end of the month. It almost seems symbolic that a book that I poured my fear, frustration, and even anger into in the fall is now in my hands and is being read by other people. It's like I can let all that horror go, fluttering away on the winds. Trans Witch: College of Secrets is what happens when I take unmanageable emotions and forge them into something positive. If you get a chance to pick up a copy from Amazon or Barnes and Noble, I want you to get that feeling of hope and release as you read it. This week on The Multiverse Blues: Jules and the crew of Hope's Tour make bold plans to get from the world of League, across the neighboring dimension of Arne, to end up at their destination: Erde, Harlan's steampunk homeworld.

The sixteen-time Grammy nominee and three-time winner joins us to talk about his remarkably varied body of songwriting from country to to rock to political songs to Americana and contemporary folk. EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul tell you how you can hear their wild story about getting ready for the Steve Earle interview, and they explain why this episode is particularly special. PART TWO - 7:12 mark Paul and Scott head over to Steve's Los Angeles hotel to get the details on how a Chicago radio station saved his career; why reading is more important than listening to records; the book Townes Van Zandt loaned him that transformed his view of writing; the concert that inspired Steve to write "Guitar Town;" what he really thinks of the "Copperhead Road" line-dancing phenomenon; the first song he wrote after a long period of drug addiction and homelessness; why bluegrass is like bebop; who he says is THE badass country singer/songwriter in Nashville today; why he's working on a new political album that isn't just about preaching to the choir; and which song he would play for Guy Clark today to try to impress him. ABOUT STEVE EARLE Singer, songwriter, musician, author, actor, record producer, and progressive political activist Steve Earle rose to prominence in the 1980s with his album Guitar Town, which topped the Billboard country album chart, earned two Grammy nominations, picked up a Top New Male Artist nomination from the Academy of Country Music, and is included among Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of all Time. Raised in Texas, Earle launched his career in Nashville playing bass in legendary songwriter Guy Clark’s backing band. Following a stint recording with a rockabilly-influenced sound for Epic Records, Earle switched to MCA where he broke through with now-classic songs such as “Guitar Town,” “Someday,” “Goodbye’s All We’ve Got Left,” “My Old Friend the Blues,” “Fearless Heart,” “Nowhere Road,” “I Ain’t Ever Satisfied,” “The Devil’s Right Hand,” “The Other Kind,” and “Copperhead Road,” which reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. Drug addiction, homelessness, and a period of incarceration derailed Earle’s career for several years before he reemerged in the mid-1990s as standard-bearer for contemporary folk and Americana music. His eclectic comeback albums Train a Comin’, I Feel Alright and El Corazon garnered near-universal critical praise. The new millennium found Steve continuing to earn attention for his songs, including “Galway Girl,” “John Walker’s Blues,” “Jerusalem,” “The Revolution Starts Now,” and “City of Immigrants.” Always difficult to categorize, Steve has recorded the highly-acclaimed bluegrass album The Mountain with The Del McCoury Band, a traditional blues album called Terraplane, and a duet album with Shawn Colvin. In total, Earle has released nineteen studio albums and has earned sixteen Grammy nominations, including three wins in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. Steve’s songs have been covered by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Patty Loveless, Joan Baez, Travis Tritt, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Wanda Jackson, Bob Seger, Levon Helm, and many others. His son, Justin Townes Earle, is a respected singer-songwriter in his own right.

On today's show I talk to author Jack Womack. Originally from Lexington, Kentucky, Jack moved to New York in 1977, and his first novel Ambient was published a decade later. Ambient was the first in his "Dryco" series which includes Terraplane, Heathern and Elvissey, which he won the Philip K Dick Award for. He's also written a number of other great books like Random Acts of Senseless Violence and Let's Put the Future Behind Us. Jack may or may not fall under the rubric of "cyberpunk", depending on who you ask, but he has been called William Gibson's favorite author. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
