Although the Blue Jays, rotation depth is a strength, entering MLB's Fantasy draft season, the 5-man starting group is only ranked borderline good enough to make the post-season. Mal and Griff discuss that, plus which Jay starter should be given the opening day nod, why the art of tanking for draft position means less in baseball, is it even possible to improve a bad Jays bench, and more. On December 5, 1921, Babe Ruth and two other members of the New York Yankees are suspended for participating in an “illegal” barnstorming tour after the 1921 World Series. Commissioner Landis punishes Ruth, outfielder Bob Meusel, and pitcher “Wild Bill” Piercy for the first six weeks of the 1922 season. This will have little impact as the Yankees will make World Series for the second straight year (although they lost to the NY Giants for the second consecutive time). However, Ruth had the worst year of his career posting a 6.4 WAR, and as an everyday player, his 1.106 OPS was his second worst mark of the 20's. He did bounce back in 1923, winning the MVP. He still managed to hit 35 homers with 96 RBI, so it was a pretty good year. What I marvel at is how much of his Baseball Reference page is bolded. Between 1918 and 1931, he wasn't the league leader in home runs just twice. Once was this 1922 season and the other was 1925, when he appeared in just 98 games. On December 5, 1973 — Ron Santo becomes the first player to invoke the new 10 and 5 rule. The Cubs want to trade Santo to the Angels for two pitchers, but he vetoes the deal. The 10-5 rule, which was agreed upon during the 1972 players strike, gives a player with 10 years' service and 5 consecutive years with a team the right to veto a trade. In this case Santo was from the west coast but was comfortable in Chicago and desired to stay in the area. The Cubs honored the new agreement, and he will eventually be traded to the cross-town White Sox. It did not work out well as Bill Melton was the third baseman, and Santo moved around between second and the DH role. He will hang up the cleats in 1974. Ironically on this day in 2011, Santo will finally get his due and be voted into Baseball's Hall of Fame. A long overdue honor for Santo who passed away the previous year. He receives 15 of 16 votes from members of the “Golden Era” Committee. On December 5, 1978 — After sixteen years with the Cincinnati Reds, Pete Rose signs a four-year, $3.2 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Other teams which pursued “Charlie Hustle” include the Mets, Braves, Pirates and the Royals. The deal temporarily makes Rose the highest-paid athlete in team sports. In 5 years with the Phils (1979-1983), Pete will be a 4X All-Star and help the Phillies to 2 NL Pennants including the Phillies first Championship in 1980. He led the league in hits in 1981 with 140 base knocks, and he finished his Phillies career with a slash line of .291/.365/.361. That was a period that covered his age-38 to age-42 seasons. On December 5, 1990, the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays collaborate on an old-fashioned blockbuster trade. San Diego deals Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter to Toronto for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez. Alomar and Carter will help the Blue Jays to two World Championships. Alomar will become one of baseball's best players during his 6 years, hitting .307 with 206 stolen bases, a .382 OBP and .833 OPS. He will finish in top 10 in the MVP vote 3 times and win 6 Gold Globes. Carter, a premium RBI man, will drive in 100+ runs in 6 of his 7 years in Toronto. Only the strike shortened year stopped him in 1995. He will finish in the top 5 for MVP voting twice and hit one of the most historic homeruns in World Series history off Mitch Williams. Fred McGriff will go on to hit 493 home runs over his career playing for multiple teams. It remains an injustice he is not in Cooperstown.Tony Fernandez will play for 2 seasons in San Diego end up back on Toronto and play on the 1993 World Championship team, playing in all 6 games and driving in 9 runs. On December 5, 1951, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson dies at the age of 62. Jackson, who succumbs to a heart attack, batted .356 over his 13-year career. Jackson had the talent to be the greatest player in history, but he threw it away...

Why Ideas Are NOT Enough To Build Wealth | Karl Alomar

Great companies aren't built on ideas alone—they're built on execution. As Karl Alomar aptly said, "You don't need innovation to build a great company, but you must have operational excellence." Innovation is a powerful catalyst, but without exceptional execution, even the best ideas will fall flat. This perspective resonates deeply with my journey. Building a nearly nine-figure company from scratch taught me that success hinges on operational excellence, culture, and disciplined execution. Here are three key takeaways for anyone striving to build not just a good company, but a great one: - Execution beats Ideas: A groundbreaking idea without execution is just a dream. Focus on operational discipline to turn innovation into impact. - Culture is the Catalyst: Great culture attracts A+ players, and A+ players drive excellence. Prioritize creating an environment where your team thrives. - Continuous Improvement: Success isn't a one-time event. It's a daily commitment to learning, adapting, and optimizing every aspect of the business. Innovation might open the door, but operational excellence is what ensures you walk through it.

Yet, despite his twelve All-Star selections and ten Gold Glove awards, he has remained one of the most contentious and enigmatic characters in baseball's history. Roberto Alomar: The Complicated Life and Legacy of a Baseball Hall of Famer (Roman & Littlefield, 2024) is the first complete, balanced biography of arguably the greatest second baseman in the history of Major League Baseball. It covers Alomar's impressive career, his altercation with umpire John Hirschbeck and their eventual friendship, the allegations stemming from Alomar's personal life, never-before-heard stories about his conflicts with both minor and major league teammates, and his global influence. When Roberto Alomar retired in 2005, his place as one of baseball's all-time greats was unquestioned. But the controversies that always seem to follow him make Alomar's legacy far from clear. Just like you, we made some New Year's Resolutions. One of them being: more podcasts for you to listen to and watch. Like always, we're blessed to have you here rolling with us and truly appreciate you all for sticking around. I know we haven't released a lot of shows in 2023 but that will change.  Today's podcast we have the inspiring Fabian Alomar. We know him first and foremost as a pro skater from back in the day. But now he's making the rounds in Hollywood, making acting appearances in shows like This Fool and Mayans MC. Recently he was also a part of the Flamin Hot Movie in 2023. We also know he's had a rough past, serving time in prison for years in the 2000's and as recently as 2012. But since, he's been working on himself while also giving his time to the Anti Recidivism Coalition (ARC), an organization that aims to prevent recidivism and keep high risk youth out of prison. Fabian talks about this and then some. So sit back and enjoy this great conversation with him.  Certainly can't forget who keeps the Wheels of Steel rolling: Thanks to Cerveza Cito for the sponsorship. What the Riff?!?
1975 - May: David Bowie "Young Americans"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 9, 2023 42:49

David Bowie would leave the glam rock genre of his previous albums for a more soulful sound with his ninth studio album, Young Americans.  This album features blue eyed soul, or what Bowie would refer to as "plastic soul."  David Bowie moved to the United States in 1974 during a time when tax concerns were driving many artists out of the UK.  He was living in New York City at the time, and starting production on the album in Philadelphia where he worked with guitarist Carlos Alomar.  A funk guitarist, Alomar had worked as a session musician at the Apollo Theater and would become a collaborator and band leader for Bowie over the next decade.  In addition to Carlos Alomar, Bowie worked on this album with a number of artists including Robin Clark, Ava Cherry, saxophonist David Sanborn, and a new musician named Luther Vandross. He would also collaborate on this album with ex-Beatle John Lennon who was recording in New York at the same time as Bowie's recording moved there.  Bowie and Lennon had met previously at a party hosted by Elizabeth Taylor.  Lennon collaborated with Bowie during his "lost weekend" period.Young Americans contains elements of soul, funk, and R&B, and was a deliberate attempt to garner more success in the U.S. market.  It certainly achieved this result, though critics would deliver mixed reviews.  The transition from glam rock to blue-eyed soul would not be one which all fans embraced, but David Bowie would follow his own creative muse.  It would not be the last time we would see a significant stylistic change from Bowie.  It was nevertheless a commercial success, going to number 9 on the US albums chart, remaining on the charts for almost a year.Rob brings us this funky example of “plastic soul.” Young AmericansThe title track was recorded in Philadelphia, and hit number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100, Bowie's second-highest chart success to this date.  Then unknown singer Luther Vandross conceived the backing vocal arrangement.  The song provides impressions of American life through the eyes of an English man.  David Sanborn provides the saxophone work.Across the UniverseThis cover of the Beatles song also found collaboration with Beatles' alumnus John Lennon.  Backing vocals and guitar are provided by Lennon, who considered this song a better version than his own.  Critics tend to disagree, as reviews on the Bowie version were primarily negative.FascinationThis track began as a jam by Luther Vandross entitled “Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)” which was performed before the Bowie concerts in 1974.  When Vandross was retained from the “Diamond Dogs” tour, the two collaborated to create the song “Fascination.”  The song was an homage to the Philadelphia funk sound.FameThis single hit number 1 on the US charts, the first Bowie song to do so.  Composed by Bowie, Alomar, and Lennon, the high backing “Fame” vocalizations are provided by John Lennon.  Bowie would describe it as a “nasty, angry” song directed at management with which he had previous issues. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Ease On Down the Road by Consumer Rapport (from the motion picture The Wiz)A soulful take on The Wizard of Oz featured Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. STAFF PICKS:Judy Mae by Boomer Castleman Wayne initiates the staff picks with a controversial song that went to number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics tell of a father to a 17 year-old girl who marries a woman half his age.  When an affair ensures between the stepmother and the daughter, the father dies of an accident shortly thereafter.  It feels like a racier version of “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia.”Long Haired Country Boy by the Charlie Daniels BandBrian brings us a song about a guy with a very passive attitude about life. “I ain't asking for nobody for nuthin' that I can't get on my own.  If you don't like the way I'm livin' you just leave this long-haired country boy alone.” It was off the second album from the CDB entitled “Fire on the Mountain.”When Will I Be Loved by Linda Ronstadt Bruce features Ronstadt doing a cover originally from the Everly Brothers in 1960.  While the original peaked at number 8, Ronstadt's cover would go to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song is a vocal trio between Ronstadt, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. Trampled Under Foot by Led Zeppelin Rob finishes the staff picks with a song John Paul Jones claims was inspired by Stevie Wonder's “Superstition.”  The lyrics were inspired by blues artist Robert Johnson's “Terraplane Blues” from  1936.  A Terraplane was a classic car that serves as a not-so-subtle source for sexual innuendo.  It is off the band's double album, “Physical Graffiti.”  COMEDY TRACK:Bertha Butt Boogie by The Jimmy Castor Bunch This funk novelty track went to number 16 on the US pop chart and number 22 on the US R&B chart.

There have been 1,193 players who have appeared for the Mets, according to Baseball Reference as of this morning, but only 1,187 names for players in Mets history. Yesterday, Bobby Jones — an entirely different Bobby Jones than either of the Mets' Bobbys Jones, and the golfer Bobby Jones, and not the Hall of Famer from the 76ers Bobby Jones either, that was the point — came up on Twitter thanks to my old Sporting News colleague Adi Joseph. It got me thinking… how many times have the Mets had that happen, the double Bobby Jones thing? So, I went to the list of all-time Mets names and found the repeaters. Let's take a look at these six pairs and declare the definitive Met for each name.Sandy Alomar was traded from Atlanta to Houston around the start of spring training in 1967, then traded by the Astros to the Mets for Derrell Griffith at the start of spring training. At the age of 23, Alomar went 0-for-22 as a Met, and got traded to the White Sox in August of 1967 as the player to be named later in the Bill Southworth trade (the Mets also gave up Ken Boyer). Alomar was more significantly with the Yankees, playing three seasons in the Bronx, but mostly a California Angel. Anyway, here are the lowest OPS figures for players with at least 4,000 plate appearances in the live ball era:Doug Flynn (1975-85): .560Alomar (1964-78): .578Tommy Thevenow (1924-38): .579Mark Belanger (1965-82): .580Ed Brinkman (1961-75): .580In 2007, Sandy Alomar Jr. joined his old man in accumulating 22 at-bats as a Met. In the last eight games of a career that deserved better than 2.8% of the Hall of Fame ballot and going off the ballot in his first year, Alomar collected three hits: two singles and a double. The Mets' third base coach at the time? Of course it was Sandy Alomar Sr., the definitive Met Sandy Alomar because of that coaching stint. On May 10, 1967, with their original Sandy Alomar in the fold, the Mets purchased the contract of Bob Johnson from the Orioles. Playing all over the infield, but mostly second base, Johnson acquitted himself nicely in his first taste of National League ball, hitting .348/.377/.474 with five homers — the best hitting of his career, really. After the season, the Mets traded Johnson to the Reds for Art Shamsky, who became part of the 1969 championship team alongside Bob Johnson, a lefty pitcher. This Bob Johnson pitched two games for the Mets, and retired five of the seven batters he faced for a World Series-winning team (two quick outs to mop up against the Pirates on September 19, and a 12th-inning save at Wrigley Field on October 1). Johnson did pitch in the World Series against the Orioles, but not in 1969. He did that in 1971 with the Pirates, having been traded from New York to Kansas City (along with Amos Otis, oops) after the 1969 season for Joe Foy. The original Bob Johnson has a greater claim to the Mets' throne of Bobs Johnson.Bobby Jones, we don't even really need to go deep on. He and Bobby Jones were teammates on the 2000 Mets, and whether you differentiated them as Bobby J. and Bobby M., righty and lefty, starter and reliever, or white and Black, there was never any question that the main Bobby Jones was the 1997 All-Star and former first-round pick — not the journeyman.Mike Marshall is best known as a Dodger, either for winning the 1974 Cy Young Award or for his three-run homer that broke open Game 2 of the 1988 World Series, depending whether you decide to talk about him or Mike Marshall. In Mets history, neither is particularly significant. The pitching Marshall signed with the Mets in August of 1981, posted a 2.61 ERA in 20 appearances, and called it a career. On December 20, 1989, the Mets traded Juan Samuel to Los Angeles for the slugger Marshall and Alejandro Peña… Marshall was traded to Boston that July after hitting .239/.278/.411 with six homers in 53 games. Once again, can't beat the original.Bob Miller was a lefty who went 2-2 with a 7.08 ERA for the 1962 Mets (hey, that's 5% of their wins!) after coming over from Cincinnati in May of the teams's first season, along with Don Zimmer. Righty Bob Miller likewise ended his career with the Mets, joining the club near the end of the 1973 season after having his contract purchased from the Tigers, then sticking around through 1974. Neither is that exciting, go once again with the original for the Zimmer connection.Last but not least, we've got Chris Young and Chris Young, and anyone who remembers the outfielder's doomed stint in Flushing in 2014 knows that it's the pitcher, here in 2011 and 2012, who is the ulti-Met CY. This Day in Baseball - The Daily Rewind

It remains an injustice he is not in Cooperstown. Tony Fernandez will play for 2 seasons in San Diego end up back on Toronto and play on the 1993 World Championship team, playing in all 6 games and driving in 9 runs. On December 5, 1951, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson dies at the age of 62. Jackson, who succumbs to a heart attack, batted .356 over his 13-year career. Jackson had the talent to be the greatest player in history, but he threw it away when he accepted $5,000 to throw the 1919 World Series. As part of the most infamous scandal in sports history, Jackson was banished from baseball following the 1920 season, along with his seven co-conspirators. The controversy over that decision has kept Jackson's name alive long after his death.

After only a 1 year hiatus this time, Ocho is back. Recently my friend, Craig Ballard gave his thoughts on why Barry Bonds should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame; Craig asked me to respond, and I figured it would be a great chance to follow-up on the previous Drunk Discussions episode, which also talked about this subject. ***IMPORTANT CORRECTIONS*** 1. During this episode, Ocho states that Roberto Alomar had been banned from baseball for sexual assault/sexual harassment. Officially it was stated that Alomar was banned for "sexual misconduct." Ocho also stated that it was for two incidents; officially it was for one - though a second incident had been reported, but at the time the investigation for that one was still going on. 2. Ocho mentions a former Pirates player who had accused Willie Mays and Willie Stargell of providing players with drugs. The player who accused Mays and Stargell was John Milner, who played with Willie Mays on the Mets and Willie Stargell on the Pirates. Be sure to give us a rating and leave a comment. Well, we had a very full week of baseball news, and we did our best to pick the topics that we hope you'll like us to talk about. Up first, it's Roberto Alomar, HOF former player and MLB exec, exiled from baseball following a lengthy investigation from baseball. Gary takes on the Memorial Day MLB cap with what Rich thinks is an awesome offering (he's really going to have to hold back not to purchase this one) - how many caps does the New Era and MLB want to throw at us. We give you our take. Love reigns this week, as we pull ourselves out of the usual more murkier subjects that seem to surround this game of baseball. An innocent 2nd date turns into a full Twitter publication as a friend wants to check in on the couple at the ballpark in Arizona. All this and more. Just a few episodes back we decided to revisit some of the highlights from Sake Future Summit 2020. In preparing for and editing that episode there was so much that we wanted to include but couldn't in the interest of time, we devised a clever solution: we just did it again. As with the previous round, if you have the time to really pick through all of these on the official Sake On Air YouTube channel, the visual component adds a lot to these and there's a great deal more fascinating and insightful material that we just couldn't cram in. Also, seeing as how half of the programming for the Sake Future Summit was comprised of interviews, tours, presentations and discussions conducted with individuals from the Japanese side of the industry and carried out in Japanese and subtitled, a majority of the great programming is still stuck in a visual-only format. If you're sipping sake or shochu over the weekend, firing those sessions up alongside your beverage-of-choice isn't a bad way to spend an evening. You can find those all archived over on our YouTube channel. In this episode you'll hear from hear:- How the pros of the U.K. sake market are looking to bring it to the next level in a discussion with Barry McCaughley (Restaurateur; F&B Development Consultant), Miho Komatsu (Sake Specialist for Marussia Beverage; Marketing and International Sales for Akashi-tai Sake Brewery), Akiko Konishi (Manager of Intl. Dept. at Konishi Shuzo), and navigated by Oliver Hilton-Johnson (Tengu Sake).- About how some unique approaches to the Spanish market could change the game for sake, together with Pablo Alomar Salvioni (President of Salvioni & Alomar), Francois Chartier (Aroma Specialist; Master Blender for Tanaka 1789 X Chartier), and Rubén Pol Ramon (Head Sommelier at Restaurant Disfrutar, Barcelona).- The ways in which shochu is poised to be woven into the future of the world's best bars with Don Lee (Industry mentor; former partner Existing Conditions), Ryan Chetiyawardana (Founder of Mr. Lyan; Cocktail bartender), and Chikako Ichihara (CEO of Azix; Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association US Liaison officer).- How French cuisine could pave the way for sake to be incorporated into the upper echelons of the epicurean experience, together with Xavier Thuizat (President of Kura Master; Chef Sommelier of Hotel Crillon) and Marco Pelletier (Vigneron at Domaine de Galouchey; Proprietor of Vantre, Paris).- About the fascinating ways that sake and shochu are being incorporated into some of the U.S.'s best restaurants in a dialogue between Nobuo Fukuda (Chef at Teeter House), Sachiko Miyagi (Sake Expert at Tippsy Sake), Mutsuko Soma (Chef at Kamonegi; Owner of Hannyatou), David Schlosser (Chef at Shibumi), and Christopher Gomez (Beverage Director at Shibumi).
