Our Fake History

The famous Battle of Thermopylae forms the centerpiece of the Spartan Mirage. Legend has it that a tiny force of 300 Spartans took on over two million Persians and managed to hold them off for a remarkable four days. The Spartan sacrifice has been credited with saving Greece and paving the way to the ultimate Greek victory over the invaders. While it's true that the Spartans made a stand at Thermopylae, so too did thousands of other Greeks whose contributions have been edited out of the story. Almost everything about this famous showdown has been exaggerated and distorted. Who were the real heroes of Thermopylae? Tune-in and find out how playing possum, 700 Thespians, and something called the Battle of Champions all play a role in the story.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's finally happened, Joe has got his big break and he's off to join the theatre crowd as a part of a very high brow (and very, very serious) production. Somehow his explanation of this turn of events leads us to hear about a toupee with international consequences. Darren believes he has what it takes to become Ireland's number one celebrity impersonator, and Joe thinks Darren could become the national voice of the sliced pan. We hear about two interactions Darren had with Keith Duffy, and while the first interaction is a moment of great reflected celeb glory, the second is a brutal humiliation. We have a significant dinosaur update. The beast has found a home, too close to home, and Joe is wondering what long term impacts a dinosaur in Coolock might have on his life – from fighting with the neighbours about the beast in the front garden, to the children of the area being cursed with weekly visits to see the dinosaur, and even a potential backlash from the local youth. And Darren reveals a deep distress about discarded mattresses, from their smell to their potent threat to life. Send all of your comments and questions to stallit@goloudnow.com

(The Rat In Longespee's Skull) *** Most people are superstitious to at least a tiny degree – avoiding walking under ladders, not opening umbrellas indoors, or having a tingle down the spine every Friday the 13th. Perhaps you have a favorite or “lucky” shirt to wear on special occasions – or a lucky pair of socks. Maybe you have to dress from left to right instead of the other way around. Superstitions may seem silly, but we seem to live with them everywhere – but your superstitions don't hold a candle to the ones believed by those in the theater. Thespians on and off the stage have some pretty bizarre concepts about what is lucky and unlucky. (Strange Superstitions of the Stage) *** Viking sagas describe the ritual execution of blood eagle, in which victims were kept alive while their backs were sliced open so that their ribs, lungs, and intestines could be pulled out into the shape of bloody wings. The torture method was so grisly that some historians believe it never truly happened. We can only hope historians are correct, because the thought of someone going through it alive is unbelievably terrifying. (The Blood Eagle Viking Torture) *** Physicist Enrico Fermi famously asked the question "Where are they?" to express his surprise over the absence of any signs for the existence of other intelligent civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy. Although many potential resolutions to this so-called “Fermi paradox” have been suggested over the years, there is still no consensus on which one, if any, is correct.  We'll look at some of the theories as to where E.T. might be found. (Where Might E.T. Be Hiding?) *** Only once in the history of law enforcement and ufology has there been a case where a UFO incident turned into an actual criminal investigation. We'll look at the Dechmont Woods Encounter. The first thing my guest, Paul Schmidt, would like you to know about him, is that as a single dad, his teenage son, Robbie, is his world and his reason for everything. Which is incredibly endearing considering the level of success he's attained in a variety of professional and creative endeavors. Perhaps his success is due to being cast at the age of six in the role of “God” in his school play and that has “anointed” his efforts ever since. For years Paul would continue his Thespian pursuits acting in just about anything he could, which in 1980's Baltimore meant musicals, as he performed in over 20 of them before he turned 18.  Once he was out of college, he pursued a successful career in broadcasting, and started on-air at 98 Rock in Baltimore, and eventually went on-air full-time at WRDX in Wilmington, DE for almost a decade. Adding to his performance repertoire, Paul did stand-up comedy and owned and operated Christina's Comedy Zone at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino for 3 years, which won Best Comedy Club in Delaware Today Magazine. He also did a year of improv in the Baltimore troupe of ComedySportz. For the past 25 years, Paul has poured his stage and on-camera acting experience into commercial and corporate voiceover work, and voicing for hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses via explainer videos, e-learning, corporate training, medical narration, and audiobooks. As a community builder and business coach, Paul created the VO Freedom Master Plan, a voiceover marketing program designed to generate consistent opportunities for voice actors to book work, and the VO Pro Community, a private, professional, global community created to meet the needs of voice actors and audiobook narrators who want to take their careers to the next level.  Joining me from Richmond, VA, Paul is an avid sports fan, who loves playing golf with his son and refers to himself, among other things, as a “Golf Suckist”.  To talk about all this and more, I'd like to welcome Paul Schimidt to 19 Stories. “The Thespian Nurturer” A deeper look into the concept of pseudo care for gain!

Zo Williams: Voice of Reason

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2024 77:09

Definition: Performative caring, also known as pseudo-care, is when someone shows care for a secondary personal gain. It can be a form of pathological altruism, and can involve: Questions: 1. What does genuine nurture look/feel/sound like? How can you recognize the difference between genuine nurturing versus nurturing with a motive? 2. How can the preconceived notion that “women are nurtures” create unrealistic expectations for women in relationships? How do these expectations create false narratives and entitlement surrounding care, nurturing and feminine roles within relationships? 3. What role does attachment style play in a person's ability to nurture? Are there connections that can be drawn between attachment style, vulnerability and a person's ability to give and/or receive nurturing? 4. Is performance a byproduct of a lack of nurturing? What distinguishes the mindset of a nurtured person going into relationships vs the non nurtured individual? 5. Is the desire to be validated the driving force behind performative care? If so, could the same be said for the person receiving the so-called care? Are both individuals demonstrating a lack of self worth by seeking validation in different ways? 6. How can the concept of performative caring be seen in the context of social media influencers and celebrities who often promote charitable causes or social justice issues for personal gain or to enhance their public image? 7. Can performative care be a learned behavior from childhood experiences or societal influences? How does childhood trauma or neglect contribute to the development of pseudo-care tendencies in individuals? 8. In what ways can performative caring be harmful to both the individual exhibiting this behavior and the recipient of their supposed care? How does it impact genuine relationships and emotional connection? 9. How can individuals who engage in performative caring work towards developing authentic empathy and compassion without ulterior motives? Is it possible to unlearn pseudo-care behaviors and cultivate genuine care and nurturing instincts? 10. Is there a connection between performative caring and narcissistic tendencies or manipulation tactics? How can one differentiate between genuine care and manipulation disguised as care? 11. How does the concept of performative caring tie into the power dynamics within relationships, especially in romantic partnerships or professional settings? Can pseudo-care be a tool for control or manipulation in such dynamics? 12. What are the psychological motivations behind engaging in performative caring behaviors? How do factors such as insecurity, low self-esteem, or fear of rejection play a role in seeking validation through pseudo-care actions? 13. How can individuals identify and confront their own tendencies towards performative caring? What steps can one take to cultivate authentic care and empathy towards others without seeking personal gain or validation? 14. Is there a spiritual or philosophical perspective on the concept of performative caring, as explored by thinkers like Krishnamurti or Wayne Dyer? How do spiritual teachings emphasize the importance of genuine compassion and selfless service? 15. Can the practice of mindfulness and self-awareness help individuals recognize and overcome their tendencies towards pseudo-care? How can practices such as meditation or introspection lead to a deeper understanding of one's true intentions and motivations in relationships? 1. **What does genuine nurture look/feel/sound like? Discovering Grayslake: Unveiling the Stories and People That Make Our Town Unique

ENCORE! represents the extracurricular theater program at Grayslake Central High School. We produce three productions per school year, and the format we have followed for the last handful of years is that we have a fall musical that we work on from the beginning of the school year and perform the weekend before Thanksgiving. This production has over 100 students involved in terms of actors, backstage technicians, and pit band members. We have student leaders in crew heads throughout all productions, and we regularly ask students to step up to be dance captains and to lead their peers.   In the winter, ENCORE! has competed in the IHSA events of Contest Play Drama and Group Interpretation as what we call our competition team. These events compete in March, and we have competed since 2016, with the 2019 Group Interpretation show qualifying for State. The contest play involves students building a set, creating props and costumes, and then bringing all of that to a host school where we perform a 40-minute cutting of a play for other competing schools and judges.  We switched gears this year to give our students a chance to create everything that comes along with creating a full-length play, and that is the show we are working on right now, Shakespeare in Love, High School Edition. We have 60 students working on this production, with four adult sponsors, and our show will be performed on March 15th-17th at GCHS. Performances will be on March 15th and 16th at 7pm, and on March 17th at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased at boxoffice.d127.org Our third production is our student-directed one acts, and this features seniors teaming up to direct their own short one act plays. This showcase of short plays is performed at the end of April, and is a great opportunity for younger and newer actors to try being on stage.   ENCORE! has student leaders that make up the Executive Board, which is nominated by and elected by the Thespians of ENCORE! This Executive Board plans events like the holiday party and end-of-year reception for the company. Thespians are students who have put in 100 or more hours into our program through working on shows, and this includes acting roles. Our students in ENCORE! are some of the more dedicated and hardworking students I have ever had the joy of working with. They are kind, welcoming, and make sure that ENCORE! leaves a legacy that invites students who love theater a place in our school community.   Kaitlyn Tagarao: Senior member of ENCORE! executive board, current actor in Shakespeare in Love playing Kit Marlowe Naty Parra: Senior member of ENCORE! executive board, current actor in Shakespeare in Love playing Nurse Hazel Dodds: Senior member of ENCORE! and current Student Production Manager in Shakespeare in Love Andrew Graham: Junior member of ENCORE! and current actor in Shakespeare in Love playing Will Shakespeare.

The guys reminisce about their favorite Christmastime memories, and Christian laments how his memories of caroling at the local library just isn't the same as it used to be. Then, a listener named Noelle tells us how she fell asleep listening to the pod and had a full on dream about us, and she offers a pedicure-related Would You Rather. Finally, a 25-year-old listener named Alba calls in to say she's able to relate to us despite her younger age, and she says her husband doesn't find the show as funny as she does (maybe because of all the nerdy thespian humor).See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
