Overcoming Child Sexual Abuse ~ With Kathy Andersen

Today, we're joined by Timika Chambers. Timika is a thriving survivor – a lioness, as she describes herself. Timika was born in Memphis, Tennessee.  At the age of 4 ½, Timika's mother bought one-way bus tickets for herself and her three children – all under the age of 5 – to leave an abusive marriage. But for Timika, soon after, that journey turned into what she describes as, “the dark wilderness of sexual abuse by two family members.” Timika found purpose in healing herself and others through nursing, and then, even more-so, through writing. Today, Timika shares her story of finding purpose and healing with us. Timika holds a Master's degree as a Nurse Educator and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, and has over 20 years experience in the healthcare industry.

Tonight's special guest is Timika Chambers from Portland, Oregon, a survivor of sexual abuse. Timika says, "For approximately five years, from ages 5-10, two male family members violated our relationship's boundaries by forcing and manipulating me to have sex with them. Throughout the sexual abuse, I continued to do the things many children do, such as play with friends and my toys and watch television. After the secret was out, many thoughts visited me, including feeling like trash, scared of men, and how I denied following the Voice within to tell." Timika's experience is not unusual. Many children suffer in silence, waiting it out. She goes on, "At the crossroads of what I do now, I chose to align myself with nature and develop a relationship with God. I consumed the King James Bible and learned the Lord's prayer. Jesus was my first superhero. In my 20's, I saw a therapist for one visit because I thought I had to. I feel blessed that God loves me and that I have my health and sanity. I want to help people find their healing path and live out their divine purpose in life. I am currently finishing up 'Bent Not Broken', a memoir outlining my healing process."

Ever thought of starting a side hustle selling hair lice removal services? That's exactly what Timika came up with when she realised she wanted to make more money to retire early and take a sabbatical. She did the research, put up a bit of money and in her first year made 6 figures in sales. In 3 years she hopes to take her first sabbatical. You'll love her story. We also chat about... Timika's money journey How her divorce affected her finances Taking sabbaticals Her entrepreneurship journey starting a lice clinic Having the confidence in the value of what you're providing How you can start your own lice clinic business Enjoy this chat with Timika, and please subscribe to us in iTunes if you enjoyed it! Show notes and links from today's episode Blog: The Reluctant Frugalist Dave Ramsey Joshua Sheats - Radical Personal Finance ChooseFI Key takeaways from our chat with Timika 1 - Managing a business is about confidence Contrary to many other entrepreneurs, Timika wasn't a kid selling cookies and managing entrepreneurial ventures at a super young age. And yet, she is now managing a 6 figure business that is fast tracking her path to FI. She tells us that her biggest hurdle was confidence. She learnt to speak in front of people, to believe in her skills and deal with rejection. She now encourages her daughter to do the same, she now has her own Minecraft channel! 2 - You can set up your own lice clinic Although it may seem like an odd side hustle to have, Timika's thought process behind starting her own lice clinic makes a lot of sense. She only had to invest $25,000 to get it started - the price of a car - and the return was substantial. She went to a lot of other lice clinics to take note of profits and see how the system worked.. She also went to talk to other business owners and analyse their strategies and techniques. She did the numbers and the research, and now has a business making her good money. 3 - Consider a sabbatical Instead of trying to accumulate as much as she can to reach FI, Timika will be taking a sabbatical in 3 years. She's a school nurse, and her school allows her to take a year off and come back to the same position a year later. She says this a great time to be with the kids, and wants to take them out of school, do some travelling and homeschool them for a while. She wants to enjoy the moments with them and knows a sabbatical will allow her to do exactly that. How about taking a sabbatical and getting a taste of what FI would feel like? Questions? Like or dislike? Leave us a comment! Want to support the podcast? Here are three things you can do. 1. Start tracking your net worth with Personal Capital using our link. It's free. 2. Time to go listen, comment and show us some love with those ratings.  Enjoy! Episode Summary Born to immigrant parents growing up in projects of Boston In the 5th grade, she was a part of a program where she began attending school in a much more affluent neighborhood When she got in high school, they moved to a two family home and began house-hacking Her parents instilled saving money but no deeper financial discussions She racked up about $94k in debt over the course of her three degrees Timika ended up with a Master’s in Accounting and a Nursing degree She talks about how she plans on handling her children’s education based on what she learned from her experience There was a discussion about a situation she was aware of where the parent’s had different payouts they would support their kid with based on how profitable the degree was they went after. She got married earlier on and they both made good money and bought a house but they never really managed their money or really worked their way out of debt or built wealth That marriage ended in divorce at age 30 and was a wake-up moment for her financially She also joined the military which greatly helped with her college debt She talks about the great experience the military was and her commitment was 1 weekend per month and a two or three week period every summer and she got a $50k bonus plus pay on those duty weekends. After being remarried and having a child, she realized she wasn’t going to stick around for 20 years and get retirement so she stepped away from the military. Once she got debt handled she started looking at side hustles and entrepreneurship Her first effort was for a breastfeeding product to help women feed at work Unfortunately, in the end, she realized the profit margins just weren’t good enough It did, however, teach her how to handle websites and social media campaigns Her recommendation is to spend your time before you spend your money when looking at a new business idea Then she found a very successful business venture in a head lice clinic She got the idea after going through a lice outbreak in a school she was working at as a school nurse Her clinic utilizes a machine that is leased through a University program that dehydrates the eggs of the lice You purchase rights to a region for the clinics and now the business is moving to a franchise model Lice Clinics of America is the organization she utilized to get started She also mentioned that there is a mobile version of the business people can get involved in now In her first year, the business made over $100k of revenue She continues her personal growth by starting a blog, podcast, and even taking coding classes Her tangible tip is to always look at a problem creatively and deliberately and realize that your journey to financial independence is a marathon and not a sprint Key Takeaways Paths aren't always marked: She ended up with three degrees which led to debt but it was part of the process for her to find her path. Some people are lucky enough to have a calling from the time they can talk and others need a little more exploration. Don't compare yourself to others, just focus on finding your path. Failure is our best teacher: This is one of the most reoccurring lessons I've ever seen with entrepreneurship. Timika didn't strike gold on the breastfeeding business in terms of revenue but the lessons she learned were priceless. Invest in yourself: I absolutely love her commitment to self-improvement.

Welcome to our first Side-Hustle Spotlight!!! The three principle vehicles to accelerate a person's path to Financial Independence are to find ways to save more, spend less and/or increase one's income. As all of our listeners are well aware, both Timika and I are big supporters of both the side-hustle and entrepreneurship. Whether it is a temporary side-hustle to pay off debt in a short period of time, creating a side business to grow into a full-time business or simply to work extra to infuse your retirement, each of these options are a great way to get you closer to your financial goals. Our guest spotlight is Jammie. She drives on the weekends for both Uber and Lyft and can earn anywhere between $325.00 to $900.00 a weekend depending on how many hours she works and bonuses for high demand days or times. Obviously, that is an incredible amount! How life changing would it be to your budget to have that type of influx of cash? Now, of course, these are one person's experiences and we cannot guarantee that you will earn the same amount we simply want to provide you with the experience of others so that you can explore options. In deciding whether or not becoming a driver is for you or not, Timika and I would like to point out a few considerations. PROS: Quick start-up Easy and quick payment Flexible Good earning potential Meeting people Tip potential Potential expense write-offs CONS/CONSIDERATIONS: Wear and tear on the vehicle Self-employed - all the ramifications of being self-employed Responsible for taxes Need a newer vehicle Strangers in your car/possible safety concerns This is not an exhaustive list - but some of the more apparent benefits and considerations. This site may contain affiliate links. Which in simple terms means that we may receive commissions for purchases made through the listed links. TRACKING MILEAGE: There are many apps available to track mileage while you drive. The Lyft and Uber apps track the miles for actual passenger rides; however, if you want to track the total amount you are driving, you can also use your own APP. These typically run in the background and are very user-friendly. One Wendy recommends is MILE IQ, which you can get by clicking HERE. SIGN-UP HERE READY TO DRIVE? Follow the links below to get started. The process is fairly simple. You will typically have to upload via your phone or computer: your driver's license insurance vehicle registration agree to a background check sometimes have your vehicle pass a safety inspection sometimes and in-person orientation I AM READY TO DRIVE! SIGN ME UP! OTHER OPTIONS: Timika recently wrote a review for Zemcar, which helps parents safely transport their children. It's just one more option if you are thinking about driving.   Are you currently driving for another service? WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Hello House of FI Family! Originally, our side-hustle spotlight was going to air today. But sadly, Wendy's mom passed away after a long hard-fought illness. She was treasured and will be greatly missed. Due to Wendy having to travel to Oregon to be with her dad and speak at her mom's funeral, we have lost some production time. So we were not able to get today's show out. Wednesday shows will not be affected and we promise to get our Friday show back up as soon as we can. Thank you for understanding! Wendy and Timika

“It’s a business with training wheels,” Timika told me. Timika Downes is a school nurse by day but was looking for ways to add income after hours, and ended up licensing someone else’s business idea. Her side hustle is a lice clinic; a brick-and-mortar facility that helps parents and kids get rid of lice. Not the most glamorous niche in the world, but Timika’s clinic did 6-figures in her first year, all on the side from her day job, and it now runs with little time investment from her. The lice clinic is actually just one of several side hustles Timika has going on – she also co-hosts the House of FI podcast, blogs at ReluctantFrugalist.com, and she has 3 kids. Her story is an interesting one. It highlights the differences between licensing and franchising a business, and Timika explains how you can leverage the support of a licensing company to get a business off the ground quickly. Tune in to hear how Timika evaluated the risks and benefits of the licensing opportunity, how she drives business, and how she’s set this up to be a hands-off 6-figure business.

THAT'S A WRAP! HOUSE OF FI 2018 A END OF THE YEAR REVIEW What an incredible year it has been. We started a podcast ya'all! We can barely believe it ourselves. What motivated two busy moms, with nine kids between them, with no training or experience to step outside their comfort zone? Well, we both saw a need. We saw a void in the FIRE movement. What we saw lacking was a voice and sufficient resources for moms and dads who were on their journey to FI. But not just traditional moms an dads - the full spectrum of parenthood. So we decided to do something about it! We launched our show in August of 2018, but prior to launching there were eight months of preparation behind the scenes. Not just interviewing people, but learning equipment, working out kinks, figuring out how to edit. It was more work than we could have ever anticipated, which was probably a good thing, because had we know the level of difficulty when we started, we may never have begun. Our Vision Some of you may not know this, but we did all of this while getting to know one another. Timika and I were strangers one year ago. We knew each other's names from a common facebook group, but that was the extent of it. But there was a common desire - we wanted to help others and it was this common ground that has been fertile soil for not just this podcast partnership, but an amazing friendship. We Could Not Have Done This Without You! We have had some great guests on the show. They have been so gracious in agreeing to come on a show that was growing. Without them, there would be no show. So, to all of our guests, many who have become fast friends, we send a big HUGE virtual hug. We love you guys and are so thankful to know you. Your money advice has been incredible...here are some of the highlights. 10 BEST Money Lessons of 2018 And to our listeners...you are simply the BEST. You have helped us grow and have truly humbled us. We seriously began this journey having NO IDEA what we were doing. But, we knew there was a need and we knew that as two busy moms, with careers, and all the stuff that comes with running a household - that if we could bring on guests that would help OUR financial independence journey - they would help yours too! So, thank you for stopping by our house; we're glad you were here. Our house is your house. Top 100....whaaaat?!?! Because of your support, we have reached some pretty big goals. TOP 20% OF ALL PODCASTS. (Whaaat! That is just amazing guys.) We have been in the top 100 of two of our categories, business and investing several  times Our weekly listeners have grown more than 10 times since we first started We reached 11,000 downloads in November in record time ....we can't wait to update you when we reach 25,000. Our commitment to you is to continue to bring on guests that serve your needs and to provide inspiration and practical tools to blow your 2019 Money Goals out of the water! We'd love to help you do that... Who doesn’t love a good read, right? Especially this time of year when we can cozy up under a blanket.   You would think a bunch of Money Nerds would only be reading a bunch of financial books, WRONG. 102R | Brad and Jonathan explain the long-term tax benefits of using a Health Savings Account to pay for medical expenses, discuss the benefits of new index fund investing options, review Monday’s episode with Timika Downes.   Brad and Jonathan are getting back to traditional health insurance, and excited about the Health Savings Account (HSA). Most companies offer health insurance options, typically including: Low monthly premium + high deductible High(er) monthly premium + low(er) deductible. The IRS defines a high deductible plan as anything higher than $1,350 for an individual, or $2,700 for a family. Employees with high deductible plans have access to an HSA (eligible accounts). An FSA (Flex Savings Account) is a reloadable account, that is primarily use-it or lose-it Putting money in an HSA is tax free, and rolls over to future years, and drawing it out for medical purposes is tax free. 2018 HSA contribution limits: $3,450 for individuals $6,900 for families After 65, if you have unused money in your HSA, you can draw it out like a traditional IRA and just pay your normal tax. Brad intends to save his receipts and wait to be reimbursed until later, as HSAs will earn interest the same as any investment account. ChooseFI community members recommend Lively or Fidelity. Review of Monday’s episode with Timika – similar concepts and action points as the recommendations from Alan in the Side Hustle Coaching Series. You don’t need permission: just take action. Dan writes in to report that he’s reached FI! ChooseFI has listeners across the globe – although not all the tax and investment information are relevant to international listeners, the lifestyle conversations are. Brad and Jonathan highly recommend Vanguard because they have low fees, which means investors keep more of their returns. In last few months, Fidelity began offering zero-fee funds and Vanguard has lowered its minimum investment from $10k to $3k for several funds. Investments abroad can have very high fees. Zero fees are not the only thing to consider when picking accounts: tax efficiency is very important as well.   Links: Vanguard Ratchets Up Index-Fund Price Battle

102 | Blogger and podcaster Tamika Downes reveals how she went from $94K of debt to owning a six-figure income-earning side hustle while continuing her job as a school nurse and raising three children. Timika’s early financial experiences came through immigrant parents, from Barbados, hustling and saving. Having a side hustle was common place in Timika’s family. Despite her family’s habit of saving, Timika finished her education with $94K of debt. After her undergraduate Timika had $24K in debt. Student loans for her master’s cost $35K A second, nursing degree, cost another $30K Choosing to pursue something that you’re not quite ready for can often lead someone to pay more than necessary. Nursing degrees don’t have to cost $30K; immediately after high school students can become qualified Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) working in hospitals or nursing homes while starting at a community college and finishing through a bridge program at a 4-year school. Nursing is a trade; find the most efficient way to get qualified. Many universities offer tuition assistant to the children of faculty/staff, often including tuition at other universities. What options did Timika consider in order to decrease her student loan debt? Timika’s mindset changed when she started to own her life circumstances; taking responsibility for her finances was a natural result. Instead of buying a $20K car, Timika bought a $20K business – a lice clinic. Timika spoke with out-of-state clinic owners and did her homework before deciding to invest in the set up for her clinic. Since opening the business, Timika has increased her talentstack to include: Securing a business lease Blogging Website management Business finance management Timika went to coding bootcamp, for 75% discount as a female minority. The lice clinic is now almost passive income: Timika only devotes three hours a week and has hired employees who manage the rest.   Links: House of FI Reluctant Frugalist Saving Sherpa The Road to Retirement: (Re)Learning to Love Work For more information, visit the show notes at https://ChooseFI.com/102

Couples and Finances   It’s not always easy to get two people on the same financial page. Timika and I can attest, with our own husbands it took a significant amount of time leading by example before getting each of them to come around and see the "FI light".   Each couple has their own unique set of challenges to work through when it comes to finances, but when the work is done, the rewards can be magnificent. Knowing the unique challenges of marital finances, we just had to find an expert to speak to our House of FI family.  We found the information you need in our interview with Ericka Young. Who is Ericka Young When Ericka Young and her husband began their marital journey, they blindly followed the usual path through college debt, first jobs and new home purchases.  This faulty path led them to a place where they were feeling overburdened by their debt and completely out of control in their spending. With some prodding from her husband, Ericka decided enough was enough, and she got to work learning all that she could about personal finance.  She soon realized she had found her calling, and she became a Certified Financial Coach.     Today, Ericka is a speaker, an author, a business owner, a financial coach and a mother!  She has blessed us with so much information aimed at helping us tackle the areas of budgeting, side hustling, kids, college and working together as a family to reach financial independence.   It’s not often that a person with such success and expertise is willing to openly share the information so candidly.   Topics We Talked About Ericka’s New Book Naked and Unashamed is Ericka’s informative book that leads couples through forming budgets and overhauling their financial situations. Ericka hired a writing coach to help her overcome her hesitations about writing this book, and the results are well worth the leap of faith.  In the book Ericka moves through various stages of financial development, and leads readers on a journey that includes an exploration of their money past, and their money future.   Ericka’s Thoughts on Starting a business   When is the best time to start a side hustle?  Ericka says “right now!” We were able to go over some of the interesting ways that Ericka was able to start her own business without spending much money at all.     Ericka’s College Hacks   We are all wondering how we will overcome college costs when the time comes, so we were excited to speak with Ericka about her daughter’s recent departure to college.  Ericka and her husband were able to talk their daughter through the process of making a wise financial choice for her Undergraduate University. Ericka talks to us about college costs, and various life hacks that she was able to capitalize on in order to help her daughter secure a full scholarship!!  You HAVE to listen to this cool tip!   Ericka’s Answers to Our Final Questions Money Lessons   Always have cash on hand (thanks to her grandfather’s teachings).  The cash will keep you out of the debt that will rob you of your financial future. Life Hacks for Parents With the high price of college, and with spending money on our kids for 18 years, college has to be something that we approach with wisdom and forethought.  You do not have to pay for college, especially if you still have debt and still need to save for your own future. Sharing a nanny  is another way to cut the high cost of child care, one client is saving $400 per month by doing this! To put this savings amount into perspective, $400 could fund $4800 of an IRA!
