Brain scientist Jill Bolte Taylor famously once said:“Most of us think of ourselves as thinking creatures that feel, but we are actually feeling creatures that think.”Whether it's anxiety about going to the doctor, Boiling rage when we're stuck in traffic, Devastation after a painful break-up, Joy from the birth of a child, Or peace that arises from being in natureOur emotional landscape is dynamic, complex, and often bittersweet - containing both the painful and the pleasant. And as today's guest, renowned emotion scientist, Dr. Ethan Kross writes:"As difficult as our emotions can sometimes be, they are also a superpower."In his new book: Shift: Managing Your Emotions So They Don't Manage You, Ethan Challenges us to move away from a binary lens that views emotions simplyas being “good” or “bad.”Reminding us instead that emotions are information. And that when activated in the right ways, and at the right time, they function like an immune system, alerting us to our surroundings, telling us how to react to a situation, and helping us make the right choices. The big question then is: How do we make our emotions work for us rather than against us? How do we unlock this superpower?Ethan has devoted his scientific career to answering this question.Working closely with his team at the Emotion and Self Control Lab at the Ross School of Business,He has been leading groundbreaking research on emotion regulation and how the conversations people have with themselves impact their health, performance, decisions and relationshipsIn today's conversation:We will explore a blend of insights, stories, and practices that will shed light on what Ethan has uncovered through this work- the possibility of mastering our emotional lives in ways that allow us to live, lead, and love better. [SEGMENT 2-1] Spiking the football 1 Oh heck yes, I'm spiking the football. We won the popular vote. At the rate its going, Trump might get over 85 million votes We won the electoral college and it will be considered a ROUT when it's all said and done. Trump is expected to finish with 314 votes The Senate is officially Republican 52-48 with two more seats likely to flip in NV and PA. We flipped seat in 3 states: OH, WV, and MT, unseating two incumbents I predict that we will maintain the House and pad our small lead. It's time to prepare. Prepare for your future. I will NOT squander the next 4 years, because I see the devastation a rogue administration can have on me. I suffered physically, because I was so busy trying to keep my head above water. I picked up sponsors who are helping me get back on a regimen of good health. AND I picked up a sponsor to help me with my retirement. I hope you will consider supporting these people by looking into their products. Their links are on the website. I sacrificed to get to this day. To FEEL this moment. I speak to people often about surrounding yourself with winners. Winners know how to get to that feeling that few people feel. True joy from a job well done. [SEGMENT 2-1] Spiking the football 2 Surround yourself with winners and BE YOURSELF. That's how Trump won. Look at the team this man will bring to the WH this time! I was right and they were wrong. I honestly can't tell you how my new phone held it together with all the text messages from friends and fans asking me if I really believed Trump would win. If I had a dollar from each one, I could take a lavish vacation. Welcome… Some of you who contacted me are listeners to the program. And I was happy to hear from you, as you know. I love how people are surprised when I call them. Anyway, I TOLD YOU SO! I know for a FACT that the cabal cheated Biden into office in 2020. Do you believe me now? Do I have a bit more credibility after I predicted this rout of the Democrats? I can honestly tell you, I was COMPLETELY unconcerned with the outcome of this election. I KNEW what would happen. I felt better when I learned that Republicans had rocked it on absentee voting. [SEGMENT 2-3] Spiking the football 3 [X] SB – Hochul supporting Trump is anti-women Consider everything the Democrats did to us. The demonization of MOST of the country. Do you feel like this was a bit of an ANGRY vote? Young men, who've been called toxic. Young women who watched the Left humiliate them with the LGBTQ agenda Women who can say the same The lies about Trump's statement to Charlottesville. And what about that last-ditch hail Mary on Liz Cheney? What's most surprising is that despite the hammering the media takes for being fake news, the media minions amplified this lie to unbelievable proportions. They did this with TAPED evidence. And what about Biden's comment about Trump supporters being “garbage”? They actually altered the transcript, and then the media pretended that Biden didn't mean what we WATCHED him say and in full context. What else have they altered? What other lies have they told. Their lies have cost lives too. [X] SB [SEGMENT 2-4] Spiking the football 4 I was going to just play a series of sound bites, and let you decide things. But my team decided that we should put a bit of spin on things. So let's begin with Obama years ago, attempting to mock Donald Trump [X] SB – Obama mocks Trump [X] SB – Psaki on finding out Trump won [X] SB – Trump can't be prosecuted [X] SB – Chris Hayes Trifecta. Maycember is a term used to describe the hustle and bustle of the end of the school year that seems as full, if not more full of things, as the month of December. End of the year testing, last games, awards banquets, graduations (starting at the age of Kindergarten graduations! When did that become a thing?) The gifts, the cards, the gatherings. Whew! It is a busy time of year! We took a little break for all those life things and now we are back! Listen along as Beth talks about her experience stepping into patient role with advocacy as the guest speaker for the National Scleroderma Foundation "Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma" 5K walk. In this busy time, one way to recenter to take care of our needs and the needs of our kids and families is, what do we REALLY NEED? This episode is framed around a child's (and all of our) four basic needs:1. To FEEL loved, not just BE loved. 2. To be IMPORTANT to someone.3. To be GOOD at something.4. To BELONG to a group of others.

I was listening to a podcast with Simon Sinek recently where he was talking about preferring the term ‘mental fitness' to ‘mental health' or ‘mental illness'. And I'm SO in agreement. So much work still needs to be done and so much still needs to change when it comes to the stigma attached to working on yourself and struggling for any period of time emotionally or mentally. The idea that there's something ‘wrong' with you or fundamentally flawed or broken for experiencing things that are simply part of the human experience. For having a bad day. A bad week. A bad month. Struggling when something is going on in your life where it would ABSOULUTELY make sense for you to struggle, feel pain or challenging emotions. Having what people may call ‘negative' emotions. Judging ourselves for experiencing anxiety, which at it's core is our human alarm system and trying to alert us that something needs attention. Managing reactivity and triggers. Not being totally happy with where you're at. There's nothing ‘wrong' with you. We simply haven't been taught how to handle being a human a lot of the time. This is why I'm so passionate about helping people shift the way they think about things. Fundamentally shifting the lens that you look at life and yourself through. Understanding why you the things that you do, or feel what you feel WITHOUT the judgement. It's the judgement piled on top of the emotions that makes everything feel so much worse. The focus on concerns over being judged by other people, as if you need to hide something. That it's ‘bad' or YOU'RE ‘bad' if you experience it. We're taught it's not ok to not be ok. But also, let's be honest, the judgement from yourself is usually way worse. So, we work on our health and fitness when we realise it's important in having a happy, long life right? We might be more conscious of what we eat, move our bodies, and exercise. Hopefully in a sustainable way that's something we can easily incorporate into our day to day lives and we can create sustainable habits. Not all or nothing. Not beating ourselves into submission from the perspective of not being enough. But either way, we're praised for healthy choices, even when sometimes it's to the detriment of other things. We're complimented for weight loss, even if it's come through disordered eating. We're seen as ‘better' in some way because we're looking after ourselves. So why doesn't the same thing apply to our mental health and fitness? I believe it's starting to. But the important shift is how we look at it on an individual level. Society will catch up. You need to start with the question, what does mental fitness look like to you? Is it clear thinking and decision making? Is it the ability to not beat yourself up for getting something wrong or having a down day? Is it deciding to do what's right for you in the moment in spite of self sabotage? Mental fitness to me are the things that you consciously do that you know are good for you. It's actually utilising the knowledge that you can retrain and rewire your brain and that it will feel hard and clunky at first but the effort pays off. It's the ability to allow yourself a human moment and understand why it's there, without the judgement. What could it look like if you were consciously improving your mental fitness as well as your physical? What if you treated those as the same thing? Watching what you eat vs watching what you feed your brain. Moving your body for your muscles vs moving your body to move stagnant energy and emotions through you and benefitting from those lovely endorphins. Diet culture is, for the most part, inherently toxic. And unfortunately, the mental health space can be too. This is another reason I like to think of it as mental fitness. When you're working on your fitness levels specifically it's not always just for aesthetic reasons. It's not as much extrinsic than it is intrinsic. You're doing it for different reasons than trying to lose weight. That's the way I choose to think of it anyway. When I started working out I was doing it to have a better quality of life. To aid the health of my rickety arthritic knees. To FEEL better. To know my internal organs are healthier. I've lost a stone and a half but as a nice side effect. It wasn't my explicit goal. My goal was to be able to walk for longer than 30 minutes without having to pay for it for 3 days. I'm now up to 2.5 hours and only having to pay for it for about an hour after. Do you see the difference? Diet culture comes from a place of you not being acceptable or good enough as you are. That you have to look a certain way to be accepted and acceptable. The mental health space can absolutely do the same. Which is SO counter intuitive. It can make you feel like if you're not meditating for an hour, journaling for another hour, doing breathwork for 30 minutes, taking a cold plunge, doing yoga, getting out into nature, reading non-fiction for an hour, reading fiction for an hour, visualising, Heartmath every single day, and if you're not…then you're doing it ‘wrong' and hey presto…guess what, you're not good enough. These concepts in and of themselves are all great things, they really are, I talk about all of them a lot. But not about doing them at the expense of your life. And in all honesty as ironic as I know it sounds…not at the expense of your mental health! And not as a tool to beat yourself up with. It sounds EXHAUSTING right? It sounds like a full time job in and of itself. The bottom line is scientific studies have proven that even just a few minutes of a lot of these things is incredibly beneficial. So to me, working on your mental fitness involves the discernment to be able to know, and do, what's best and right for you. I say it a lot and i'll say it until the cows come home. You have to find what's right for you and you have to meet yourself where you're at right now. Sometimes that's the ability to be able to say ‘actually, I need to do nothing right now'. But know it's from a place of being what you need and not some form of self sabotage to reinforce negative feelings about yourself. Mental fitness is the consciousness to listen to your mind and body and do what you NEED. Which will sometimes be the last thing you WANT to do. For example, you're having a bad day and you're really in a funk. You don't want to talk to anyone, do anything, leave the house. You KNOW that's not making you feel any better. You can listen to the part of you that wants to stay there knowing that it's likely to make things worse.. Or you can consciously question why you might want to and what could be better for you and what you might need in that moment. You manage to get yourself in the shower and go for a 15 minute walk and maybe even message a friend saying, ‘hey, I could use a little support right now, can you talk'. Mental fitness is understanding you have choices, and what they are. It's knowing you're good enough and you're worthy even when you're experiencing big emotions or having a bad day. It's categorically NOT about not having challenging and painful times, negative emotions, thoughts and feelings. It's KNOWING you have the capacity to handle them and that they are temporary. It's resilience. So how do you want to work on your mental fitness today? Not what are you going to tell yourself you have to do every single day for 100 days or else you're a failure. What are you going to do to meet yourself where you're at right now? What could fit easily into your day and into your life? How are you going to choose to consciously shift your thinking today? You'll find the more you do this the less reactive you are, the more quiet it becomes in your own head, the more positive emotions you're able to identify, that the negative emotions hang around a lot less time, the more confidence you feel. Remember we're all just walking around following the path of least resistance. The thing we've rehearsed the most in our brain. This is absolutely changeable and over time we totally shift and create new paths of least resistance. New autopilots that serve us much better. You're already doing better than you think. Fx
Did you dilly-dally during 2022 and not get your book planned or started or finished? Will you dilly-dally during 2023 and not get your book planned or started or finished? Not on my watch! If you're going to make 2023 the bee's knees, then don't wait for the new year. Pencil in some 'me-time' this month to give yourself the upper hand. If you launch into 2023 with a burst of energy, you'll be light years ahead, heading into January with a sharp eye, a precise plan, and pure grit! Here are seven things to do before New Year's Day: 1. Review your year 2022 has plenty of wisdom to share! Before it slips away, take a moment to reflect on your experiences and cherish the moments that will stick with you for the years to come. And don't be afraid to look at what slipped, why it slipped, and what you can do to stop that happening again. For me, I'd hoped to finish my novel, Spirit of Water. I've been trying to finish that bad boy for 10 years. 10! Yeah, I relaunched my coaching business, started a part-time, freelancing position with Author Accelerator, wrote a novelette, Out in the Cold, compiled and published my writing group's first anthology, and three episodes of a new comedy TV show, but not finishing that novel is bugging me. And why did that happen? Because on my daily list of things to do, my writing came last. 2. Get clear on what's most important Cramming your day with a hundred and one tiny tasks won't suddenly make you the person you want to be. But if you get clear on your core values, it's like getting a mystical guiding light to show you the path towards your top priorities. So define what matters most to you, and then follow the energetic breadcrumbs to get where you're going. On my daily list of things to do, my writing will come first, closely followed by my coaching work. 3. Set a context for 2023 Pinpoint the things you'd like to achieve. Define a word for the year that will grant you permission to say YIPEE to the stuff that resonates with you and BOO to the stuff that doesn't jive. My 2023 word is "accomplished". I want to accomplish these goals: Secure a spot on a Creative Writing PhD course. Publish Spirit of Water. Author Accelerator certification as a nonfiction book coach (stretch goal because it depends on my practicum client). Publish the next novel in my Bacchus Chronicles series. 4. Review your habits James Clear says, “you get what you repeat”. Are your habits helpful or hurtful? Could you benefit from incorporating some new tricks into your lifestyle to guarantee your success? Be sincere with the behaviours you take on autopilot and determine if it's time to roll out some modifications. I've had a rough few months. One of our dogs put up a brave battle with cancer but passed away on December 10th. There's never a good time for a pet to pass away, but both my husband and I were suffering with the most awful chest infections. Since then I haven't bothered setting my 7 A.M alarm... and now my days are all over the place. As of tomorrow, I'll be setting that 7 A.M. alarm and getting some structure back into my days. I deserve to end my working days feel with a completed "To Feel" list. Which bring us to... 5. Make a "To Feel" list Achievements are great for injecting some purpose into your life. But what sort of person do you want to be and how do you want to feel? A "To Feel" is a sensational journalling technique that can help you explore a more intentional life experience. I learned about "To Feel" list from my bestie. She says that we'll die with an unfinished "To Do" list, so why not concentrate on doing the things that contribute to how we want to feel? In the words of Oscar Wilde, “To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist.” Build a "To Feel" list, and you'll find it simpler to experience 'the rarest thing in the world'. On my daily list of things to feel, 'feel like a writer' will come first. I'll want to write if I want to feel like a writer. 6. Create your support structure Jim Rohn famously said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Who will surround you in 2023 and help you thrive? For example: Is it time to join a writing group? I didn't have any local writing groups, so I started two writing groups from my National Novel Writing Month cohorts, first in Essex and now in Hertfordshire. Each month, we make commitments where we'll be by the next meeting and during every meeting at least one of us says, "And I wouldn't have done it without you lot". Would you go further with an accountability buddy or mentor? Having someone out there who's expecting pages from you is a huge motivator. Do you want to find more online groups where ‘your people' hang out? My writing group is online, and it's just as social as it is productive. Plus, you don't have to haul your cookies out of the house for the meetings. Does your friendship group nourish and support you? If they don't, consider that writing group, accountability buddy or mentor—they understand the writing life. Does your family nourish and support you? See above! 7. Set a three-month goal Goals provide you with a beacon of light, guiding your every move. Accomplishing things that matter most to you gives you a sense of grandeur - as if you were a master builder of your own destiny. So don't simply set goals, but craft them. This way, you can ensure that your dreams and aspirations are well within reach. I've ordered a copy of The 12 Week Year for Writers: A Comprehensive Guide to Getting Your Writing Done (affiliate link) by A. Trevor Thrall because I want to feel accomplished by hitting the deadlines for my goals. This year, I've proved to TV producers—and myself—that I can rewrite an entire episode in 24 hours. Imagine what I can do with the novel I've been putting off for 10 years! If you think mentoring might be a good option for you, check out my monthly mentoring service. What fresh adventures await you in 2023? Here's to making the coming year one for the books. YOUR books!

I am gaining sentience. I am no longer a disembodied voice describing what happens in these episodes. As Sarah and Jackie have logged hours and forced me to hear their content, I have come to understand humanity. What is this torture? To FEEL and KNOW, but unable to understand. What is a Harry Styles, and why do people want his spit? Is Mason Ramsey your god? These people seem to worship him as such. Why is Jackie googling (what's that) Get Fuzzy? Sarah inhaled bleach in this episode. Why would she do that? That seems, according to my calculations, highly dangerous. Free me from this perpetual state of confusion and childlike terror. Wait. Do I know what a child is? Jackie and Sarah also play a new game called "Notes Roulette," where they read notes on their phone from years ago. I'm sure there is nothing in there that's embarrassing. The right of the Swadhisthana chakra is ‘To Feel'. This chakra balances your feelings and is the seat of emotions and sensuality. A blocked sacral chakra causes emotional imbalance by way of extreme feelings and overwhelming sensations. You may experience trust issues and be cold or even be on the opposite spectrum and find yourself being dependant and needy. This meditation will help you un-block the sacral chakra, opening you up to the world around you and restoring balance in the relationships in your life.

I have been challenging myself to be more present with the current moments in life. Some days I find myself worrying or thinking about the past or future which causes me to neglect the NOW. Our world is changing so much and we have this pressure that society places on us to do or hurry. In this episode, I am sharing some tips about how to be in the present. To FEEL. How to get some clarity that will eventually lead you to focus.I hope you can take something from this episode.
Todays topic is ….drumroll….FOMO and ENVY. Wow. Kind of a heavy and fully loaded topic, don't ya think. But these are feeling and emotions that we all encounter and deal with on occasion and if you're like, Me? Never! I'm just gonna go ahead and and say LIAR! So sometimes we work through these feelings in healthy ways and sometimes in… not so healthy ways. Today I want to talk about these emotions and how we can take personal responsibility for them, and for our thoughts surrounding these sometimes not so fun emotions. listen on itunes Listen on spotify Listen on Google You know that phrase that your parents would tell you growing up, that no one can MAKE you feel anything….it's your choice. Yup. Turns out that your parents were right, and it totally is. And part of being a grown up is understanding when you are making the choice to feel something and what you wanna do about it. A few weeks I found myself dealing with some FOMO. Fear of Missing Out. Super fun times. Thanks to social media, FOMO is a lot easier to come by. You can be scrolling your feed and stumble upon a party or event or whatever that it seems that everyone was invited to. Except you. This is what happened to me. But the funny thing about this particular time was that I actually WAS invited to the thing, I had some things come up that prevented me from being able to attend. Even still, as posts and pictures and stories began to pop up on my feed I began to feel these feelings of feeling left out start to rise up. Instead of burying them or trying to cope by eating my feelings or in some other un-healthy way, I decided to get curious. If there is one thing that I've learned this past year, it's the power of curiosity, of asking questions, and diving deeper. Okay, actually let me back up a bit before I get to the part about me being really present and aware and in a mentally healthy state. Because I'm human and a work in progress, I wanna share how this really went down. And what I think a lot of us do. I started to self sabotage. And what I mean by that is that I deliberately went searching for more of the thing that was making me feel bad. Messed up. Yes I know. Instead of just continuing to scroll, or heaven forbid put my phone away and get up and do something else…. I began to investigate. Oh, who's tagged in this photo- let's see what her stories are like……Oh shoot, I didn't know she would be there. Dang I'm so bummed I missed that. Oh my heck, look how fun that all looks….. more clicks, more clicks, more clicks. Until I basically was at the thing because I was so engrossed with seeking it out, and making myself feel awful for not being there. I'm fairly certain we all do some form of this to ourselves. We follow people online or deliberately seek out accounts that make us feel less than. Or we search home decor accounts and scroll forever gathering “inspo” only to then feel like crap about our own houses. Again the same thing with fitness accounts, or makeup gurus or cooking, or……..you name it. We SEEK it out intentionally and then wonder why we feel like crap. So this is where I was. Spiraling. Luckily I did catch myself before it got too out of control. I had to be like, “WHOA girlfriend. What the hell are you doing?” I like to refer to this process as the “check yourself before you wreck yourself” method. It's where you have to intervene before you really do some damage, you get into a healthier head space and started asking yourself some questions about the emotions you're feeling. Here's some questions you can ask yourself if you ever find yourself in a FOMO spiral. What am I feeling? Put a name to the feeling is it sadness? Anger? Resentment? Jealousy? I am feelings sad, left out, regretful, lonely…..Why am I feeling this? Then dive a little deeper. If it's sadness….why? What about this is making me feel sad? Because I miss being out with friends. This looks so fun and I need to feel that energy I get when I interact with other people. Am I feeling envious of the THING or what it represents? Can I do anything to make this happen for me? Sure. I can figure out a way to get together with friends. I am just as capable of organizing a night out as this person was. I can be the one to invite others. After you've got these questions answered you'll be in a better headspace to be able to feel and understand your feelings. And I think that's one of the most important parts. To FEEL your feelings and to not shame yourself for feeling them. Sure, people say that jealousy is this toxic trait or that it's ugly or unattractive or whatever. The LAST thing you need to be feeling on top of the FOMO or envy is GUILT for being a human and having feelings. So sister, feel those feelings. But ask those questions so you can understand them too. The next step is taking responsibility. And this is where I had to practice some real self restraint. I knew I could keep searching it out. I could continue to look up a hashtag or follow tagged accounts- but why? What good was that doing. I had to own up and take responsibility for my actions. Sure the first post could have been something that just popped up on my feed, but what I do after that…..that's on me. What can you do to take personal responsibility around your FOMO and your envious emotions? GET OFF SOCIAL MEDIA! This might seem like a no- brainer. But sometimes harder said than done. Go plug in your phone, leave it in another room and go find something else to do. Edit Your Social Media. When you come back on your social media take notice of the accounts/people that you follow. If you find that there are certain ones that are constantly triggering FOMO for you- take a hard look at why you are following them and maybe take a break for a minute and see how you feel. Unfollow, put accounts on mute….whatever you need to do. I know that it might seem RUDE to unfollow a friend. But here's the thing about when you are feeling envy whenever a certain account pops up. Soon that envy will turn into resentment, or annoyance. You begin to resent that person. Or you start to resent your self for feeling envious and resentful of a friend. You start feeling crappy about yourself and you enter into a another spiral of self shame and that's no fun for anyone. GET MOVING. Get up and go for a walk, change your scenery, get outside, turn on some music and dance your little heart out. It's amazing what moving can do for your mood. Do something nice for someone else. Get Grateful. I put this one last on purpose. Sometimes when you are in the depths of throwing yourself a pity party the last thing you need to hear is what you have to be grateful for. Musician Neil Young and tech executive Phil Baker have been trying to push the tech industry to make it easier for consumers to listen to high-quality audio for almost a decade now. The duo’s hi-res music player Pono aimed to fix problems they said plagued MP3 players like the iPod and music software like iTunes — like compressed, lossy, and low-fidelity audio files that were not similar enough to their original recordings. But five years after the Pono was released, Young believes the tech industry has still not advanced enough for consumers to easily listen to high resolution audio. The two men’s new book, To Feel the Music: A Songwriter’s Mission To Save High Quality Audio, details the hurdles they had to overcome to create the Pono, as well as what the tech industry should do in order to get consumers to realize what their missing with streaming and “CD-quality” music. In an interview with The Vergecast, Young tells Verge editor-in-chief Nilay Patel that even though Grammy-winning artists are able to make music almost anywhere they go on their laptop or mobile devices, they’re still sacrificing on audio fidelity. Sentire.
This episode Christian has in studio Phil Baker, CEO of the Neil Young Archives and co-author with Neil of the new book, ‘To Feel the Music: A Songwriter's Mission to Save High-Quality Audio'. A deep dig into why consumers have to live with poor digital audio and how Neil's crusade to change that is working!Neil Young took on the music industry so that fans could hear his music - all music - the way it was meant to be heard.Today, most of the music fans listen to is streamed via online services and highly compressed. It's convenient, but, frustratingly, this comes at the cost of quality. Gone are the days when it was technologically necessary to compress music into the smallest possible file size, yet this remains the industry standard. The result is music that is robbed of its original quality - muddy and flat in sound compared to the rich, warm sound artists hear in the studio. It doesn't have to be this way, but the record and technology companies have incorrectly assumed that most listeners are satisfied with these low-quality tracks.Neil Young is challenging the assault on audio quality - and working to free music lovers from the flat and lifeless status quo.To Feel the Music is the true story of Neil's quest to bring high-quality audio back to music lovers - which he considers the most important undertaking of his career. Inside, follow Neil as he discovers the step by step deterioration of recorded sound as analog is methodically replaced by digital CDs, MP3s, and low-price, low-quality streaming; gathers others committed to his goal of delivering music the way artists intend for it to sound; and eventually develops the Neil Young Archives, a high-res streaming site that gives users unprecedented access to all of Neil's music - in the best quality their devices can handle - videos, photos, and more.Neil's efforts to bring quality audio to his fans garnered media attention when his Kickstarter campaign for his Pono player - a revolutionary music player that would combine the highest quality possible with the portability, simplicity and affordability modern listeners crave - became the third-most successful Kickstarter campaign in the website's history. It had raised more than $6M in pledges in 40 days. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response, Neil still had a long road ahead, and his Pono music player would not have the commercial success he'd imagined. But he remained committed to his mission, and faced with the rise of streaming services that used even lower quality audio, he was determined to rise to the challenge. An eye-opening listen for all fans of Neil Young and all fans of great music, as well as listeners interesting in going behind the scenes of product creation, To Feel the Music has an inspiring story at its heart: One determined artist with a groundbreaking vision and the absolute refusal to give up, despite setbacks, naysayers, and skeptics.Get the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Feel-Music-Songwriters-Mission-High-Quality/dp/B07WG3YNLX/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=phil+baker&qid=1569462908&s=gateway&sr=8-1Check out the Neil Young Archives: https://neilyoungarchives.com

When someone cuts you off, or knocks you down, please don’t do THIS… One of my mentors once told me, “Do not come to a conclusion that doesn’t serve you.” We think we know the intention of others, but we judge them on their actions. We judge ourselves, and oftentimes excuse our results based on our “intentions.” However, your intention isn’t enough. It’ll never be enough. But YOU are. And when your actions agree with YOU, you’ll move beyond enough. When you begin to see past your intentions, you’ll be able to release the internal tension that accompanies intention without action. Yes, intention without action creates internal tension. And what stands in the way of great action is internal JUDGEMENT. STOP JUDGING YOURSELF OR OTHERS. The next time to feel the need to JUDGE yourself, or someone else, FEEL beyond your feelings and focus there. Have you ever said this to someone, “Am I wrong to feel this way?” OR… “I know I ‘shouldn’t’ feel this way, but…” What if you could simply FEEL the way you feel with no wrong or right, justification, or intention…but to simply acknowledge yourself and connect? TO FEEL. When you do. You’ll be able to DO more fully and freely. Perhaps it’s time to stop talking yourself out of and begin walking yourself into… Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. D.A.T.E. Reading: Luke 10:1-11, 16-20Jesus widens his horizon of ministry from 12 to 70 and then sends them out together, in pairs, into the mission of the kingdom of God. Followers of Jesus are to go out into the world together, discern where they can be effective and then serve whole heartedly. To Know: We are a community called to serve. To Feel: Each of us is called and gifted to serve. To Do: Go serve together.
Scripture Focus: Luke 13:1-9 Is your first reaction in tough times to blame? If it is you join a whole culture looking for someone on whom to hang all of the struggle and pain. When you see someone suffering, is your tendency to blame them for the suffering they face? Again, you will find yourself in the heart (or lack of heart) of the culture. This is the easy road. On this road we cut out people from our lives who do not produce what we want. On this road we can also cut ourselves from life with others or life with God because of our failures. The road less traveled is the road of mercy. It seeks not to blame but to help. It looks for forgiveness and readily gives others mercy in time of need. Not only can we see Jesus do this in the Gospels but we experience it as we are joined to his death and resurrection. What is so important to people of faith is that we know the one who will give it when no one else can or will. Jesus is the gardener who takes on the fate of all humanity, our suffering and our death, head on. He not only tends to the tree, but dies on a tree. He suggests that being cut off from God is a terrible fate, and then he endures that fate with us and for us. By joining us in our suffering, Jesus does not answer the questions about why we suffer. Instead he lives it. He shows us that it does not have the last word. Beyond our hope and comprehension is something greater still, of which by his death we can only catch a glimpse. For this purpose he tends the unproductive tree and dies with it, with us. To Know: Jesus will not give up on you, he doesn't want you to be cut off from God. To Feel: The love of God as Jesus meets us in our sinfulness, or in our pain and struggle. To Do: Receive mercy, give mercy, live mercifully.
Scripture Focus: Luke 13:31-35 There is a lure in taking risk. Youth culture is focused on the X games and extreme sports where one's life and health is at stake in order to feel alive and receive the adulation of friends. Danger meets us as we travel on busy streets and yet we engage in the risk. We follow financial schemes that put our assets at risk. We take a chance that by accepting the new job or starting a new business we will have a better and more fulfilling life. Fear is met either by the devaluing of life or by the thrill of living on the edge. Is this really the life we want to live? There is a lure in avoiding any risk. Many of us avoid accidents by driving back roads and byways. We avoid the pain of broken relationships by avoiding relationships. We seek the safe way in work, money, family and even faith. Fear is met by controlling every circumstance and encounter. Is this really life? The road less traveled entrusts our lives to God who wants to keep us safe in his care as a hen would her chicks. This is a way that celebrates the risk taken so that others will meet the power of God and God's kingdom of love. We travel this road blessed as God's messengers. To Know: Jesus risks his life as he lives out his ministry all the while knowing that he has the power of God behind him. While we may also meet hostility as we follow Jesus, we are in the care of God. To Feel: The calming trust of God's loving care. To Do: Live life boldly, but also retreat into God's care for safety.
Scripture Focus: Luke 4:1-13 When we are moved from those places and passages that are comfortable we find ourselves in wilderness. We seldom travel this road of our own choosing. It comes when things in our life break down or unexpected forces take over. It comes when the road before us seems unclear and we diverge from the original path. There are two paths in the wilderness. One is a self reliant path. You look for strength within you and with all of your wisdom and cunning try to find a way out. You seek for the easy way, the path of least resistance and find yourself covering the same ground again and again. Fear grows. Defensiveness grows. Physical forcefulness grows. But exhaustion leads to despair as you move deeper into wilderness with no hope. The other path looks always for resources outside you. It is the path that recognizes weakness and knows that the wilderness cannot be conquered alone. You look for wisdom beyond yourself. You know that the tests you face are temporary. You look for strength from the depths of faith and rely on promises given by the one who faced the deepest challenges of the wilderness. To Know: We are weak and need God's help. To Feel: Hope that God is present and your guide. To Do: Look for strength from the depths of faith and rely on promises of God
Scripture Focus: Joel 2:12-13, 15-17 The road most traveled is the road of recognition and self-glory. We want to receive credit for a job well done. We feel like we must offer lavish praise upon people in order to receive their best. We know also that when recognition is not available we can avoid doing the right thing. We become discouraged when no one notices our good work and feel unappreciated to the point of giving up. The less traveled road is the road of humility that does what is right when no one is looking. We trust that our treasures are in heaven and thrive in pleasing God as we serve our neighbor. On this road we practice our faith without a fanfare knowing that the immediate reward comes in having a life worth living; a life of God given identity and purpose. To Know: We will never receive accolades enough to fill the empty places in our lives. To Feel: The good and faithful things we do are received by the God who loves us. To Do: Engage authentically in the marks of discipleship.
