In today's episode, Caroline talks to actor and magician Peter Clifford about how his boyhood obsession with magic, which first served as a social bridge in his shy early teenage years - flourished into a fulfilling career that has seen him collaborate with the likes of David Blaine and Derren Brown. Peter unravels the true art of misdirection and beautifully explains the intricate journey of a magic trick. Join us as we investigate the blurring between truth and illusion and discover why practice does not make perfect, as we look at life through a different lens.   KEY TAKEAWAYS  Misdirection is subtle, the magician takes your mind on a journey that distracts you from what is happening. To be a good magician you need to be a good performer, a good actor. with magic, you take impossible things and make them seem real. David Blaine is taking things that are real but making them look impossible. Remember practice makes permanent. If you practice something badly, that's what you're practising. Pushing against your limitations helps you to grow.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Optical illusions are fascinating, because they reveal, not how your brain is wrong, but how your brain works.' ‘Misdirection leads you on the path of the narrative of the effect, and away from the method.' ‘It's easier to fool someone than to convince them that they've been fooled.'   ABOUT THE GUEST   After becoming obsessed with conjuring as a boy, winning several local and national magic and talent contests, Peter used magic to pay his way through drama school in Manchester; since graduating he has worked as an actor on stage and television as well as continuing to perform as a magician. He has worked as a magical advisor, creating effects for many theatre shows; creating a stomach-churning eye-plucking scene in “King Lear” (Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory, Bristol; with whom Peter has acted in 12 of their productions) and producing a whole cast from nowhere in “The Mysteries of Father Brown” (Worcester Swan), creating spooky supernatural happenings for Dracula: the blood count (Feelgood theatre). Magical Television appearances include Isaac Fawlkes in BBC's “Magic” -a History of Magic, Stanley Milgram in “Derren Brown: The Heist” and Professor John Gladwell in Derren's “Fear and Faith: Placebo.” Peter was an original part of the creative team for the award-winning Derren Brown television series. He also co-created and co-directed the sell-out tour and West-end runs “Derren Brown – Live.” At Bristol's Tobacco Factory Theatre Peter has performed seven solo magic shows. Recently Peter has worked as a consultant for David Blaine on “David Blaine: Beyond Magic” on television and he was a co-creator and co-director of David's first live tour (David Blaine: Live) toured North America and was seen in the UK in 2019. Let your grip on reality slip for a moment and be transported into something far more fantastical and exciting. You really have to see it to not believe it!"“Peter Clifford's love of the art resonates throughout the field of magic bringing life and hope to us all.”David Blaine“Fuck off!… I, absolutely mean that as a compliment!”Richard Branson“Peter Clifford is a constant delight.”Time Out LondonA regular Actor also here in Bristol, playing 12 Seasons with the wonderful and world renowned "Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory" over their 21 years of Productions. Peter Clifford is a magic man. Born in Plymouth over 50 years ago, he can trace his ancestors for over 200 years in the village of Cherhill near the famous White Horse on the Downs. They were often sextants or gravediggers. Peter's more immediate family of origin has had a profound effect on him. His grandmother taught him to play pontoon when he was only 5 years old! His obsession with cards started there. His parents were both teachers. Time and money were in short supply but life was still very good. Peter sought affirmation and familial approval by creating card tricks that his family could not see through. His education was disjointed, with a strong element of discontinuity. Naturally quite shy, he was always something of a loner. Habitually an observer more than a participant, Peter joined a foundation course in acting in order to improve his stage presentation of magic. Nevertheless he played different parts in Shakespeare's Twelth Night twice in one year! Later a short lecture he delivered at a magic convention led to an offer from David Blane to work with him in New York. A twenty minute presentation created rewarding work for Peter for no fewer than 6 consecutive years. Magic! He was attracted by what he could learn from the experience offered by working with David Blane as well by what ideas he could help generate. It was inspirational. As was the birth of his first child. Peter gave up alcohol in the year before to remove any risk that the new baby or toddler might ever imagine it was responsible for his darker moods. Now over 18 years without a drink later Peter says: “Practice makes permanent.” He begs that we approve the direction of travel before we commit to creating any new pathways for ourselves. A fascinating man. A true original, with unique insights to share. A surprising someone who hopes to end somewhere  in the middle of his own story rather than ‘sit on his arse for 40 years and hang his hat on a pension' - as the poet Louis MacNeice once put it. Highly recommended.Reg Starkey Editor, Health Triangle Magazine."Your Life & Times With Me Chris Grimes!" The adventure continues!“The Good Listening To: Your Life & Times With Me Chris Grimes!” is the Show & Podcast series that features “The Clearing”:Where all good Questions come to be asked - and all good Stories come to be told…With some lovely juicy Storytelling metaphors to also enjoy along the way:The Clearing itself - a Tree - a lovely juicy Storytelling exercise called “5-4-3-2-1” - some Alchemy - some Gold - a cheeky bit of Shakespeare - and a CAKE!So it's all to play for! Hurrah!(…and indeed Huzzah!)Enjoy!

I’m not going to hide you in this secondary container, but I am going to help you to think in this secondary container. Then it feels easier to turn to colleagues and be open to them and get help. Whereas if you think that colleagues are going to be making judgments about you in this more paranoid-schizoid way, then it is not a safe place to go. And then you become stuck doing things that otherwise you would not have done."   Description: We discuss the ambiguity between technical and common-sense language as it applies to clinical concepts, i.e. 'resistance' and 'boundaries'. We trace the development of early curiosity through the child's experience of frustration and encouragement. Internal conflict is valued as an intrapsychic capacity as well as that which takes place at the boundary of the analytic encounter. There, unconscious beliefs can be recognized as the internal constructions that they are which then allows for uncertainty, creativity, and curiosity. This has application to our understanding of ethics and collegiality which Philip describes as the 'secondary container' of our work. We close with a conversation about his childhood development that contributed to his current interests.   Our Guest: Philip Stokoe is a Psychoanalyst in private practice in London working with adults and couples, and is an Organisational Consultant, providing consultation to a wide range of organizations. He worked in the Adult Department of the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust between 1994 and 2012 and he was the Clinical Director from 2007. During his career he developed a model for understanding organizations called the Healthy Organization Model. He also designed the Primary Care Psychotherapy Consultation Service (PCPCS) as well as two Masters’ courses and was the co-designer of the Couple Psychotherapy Training at the Tavistock Clinic. He is a member of the European Psychoanalytic Federation Forum on Institutional Matters, which studies the nature of psychoanalytic institutions. York-based Pilot Theatre is currently in rehearsals for Outsiders, a new re-imagining of Albert Camus’ novel L’Etranger. The play is written by Emteaz Hussain and staged by the Australian director Fraser Corfield. It works around the spare narrative of the original to focus on two marginalised female characters, Marie and Sumaya, exploring the experience of migration and the impact of trauma in the lives of these two women. In this episode, director Fraser Corfield and performers Lou Broadbent and Sara Sadeghi talk to BTG’s Mark Smith about the process of creating this new piece as a cross-cultural collaboration and discuss the relevance of the play in the light of the current political climate around immigration and migration. The production opens at CAST in Doncaster from 24 to 26 September 2015 before touring through autumn to the University of York, Barnsley Civic, Derby Theatre, Liverpool Playhouse, Canada Water in London, Hull Truck, the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield and the Tobacco Factory in Bristol.
