Akram Kaim Khani is a Pakistani-born political activist and cultural promoter based in London, United Kingdom. He was a left-wing student leader in Karachi and a pro-democracy activist following General Zia-ul-Haq's coup d'état. Born in Tharparkar, he moved to Karachi at a young age, studying at Jamia Millia College, Malir, and the University of Karachi. After seeking political asylum in the UK, Kaim Khani continued his advocacy for democracy and social causes. He played a significant role in establishing the Faiz Foundation Trust in the UK, organizing cultural and literary events to promote dialogue and understanding. In 2024, he co-founded the Voices of South Asian Art and Literature (VSAAL) in London, which organized the First South Asian Festival at the Bloomsbury Theatre, celebrating the region's composite cultural heritage. Well, here we are. Emma is firmly in denial and Elizabeth is busy looking for silver linings because this week's episode of Best Friend Therapy is our LAST ONE EVER. Probably. We have loved every minute of these last two years, as we've curated this collection of conversations to share with you, our wonderful listeners.Thank you so much for having us and we hope you'll join us for one last look back, at the journey we've been on together... We talk about our favourite episodes and look back on some of the memorable moments that made us laugh and cry. We'd love to hear from you about your favourite episodes and what you'll take away from this series and, remember, the back catalogue is there for you whenever you want to dip in and hear some words of comfort and support, or just enjoy hearing us lose it over that pesky rustle in the bush. Elizabeth shares her heartfelt thanks for the space you've given to her feelings on fertility and Emma will forever be grateful for the confidence she's gained to speak her truth more widely. Finally, know that we see you. We hear you. We understand you.And you are not alone. You will always be welcome here.Oh, and watch this space for what comes next...Love Elizabeth and Emma xx---We are so looking forward to seeing some of you IRL at our live finale show on Thursday 4th April, at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London! Welcome to this week's episode of Best Friend Therapy - the one where we ask the tough questions...* What's the difference between emotional detachment and emotional unavailability?* Why can needs get confused with neediness?* How do sympathy and empathy serve different purposes? We explore how emotional detachment can actually help us to develop greater empathy and deepen authentic relationships, with others and ourselves. And we explain what happens when we don't detach - how we can lose objectivity and fall foul of merging with others, enmeshing our experiences, projecting our beliefs and outsourcing our authentic needs... Emma explains why she used to work for brownie points and Elizabeth gets interested in the inner psyche of the teenage girl. ---Not for the first time we reference the Love Languages work of Gary Chapman: https://amzn.eu/d/68aAaOc---

In Episode 73, The Occupational Philosophers chat with Professor Sophie Scott, who is the Director of the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, University College London and a Fellow of the British Academy. Sophie is an expert in cognitive neuroscience studying human vocal communication, from speech and sound to social interactions and nonverbal emotional expressions, and has become very well known for her work on laughter. As a pioneering researcher in the science of laughter, she's made some unexpected discoveries -- including my favourite, that rats are ticklish, and that the one tactic that's almost guaranteed to get someone to laugh is to show them someone else laughing. She has appeared on UK TV many times, including The One Show (BBC1), Sunday Brunch (C4), Horizon (BBC2) - AND has presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures. She also represented the Polytechnic of Central London in University Challenge (BBC2). In podcasting she co-hosts The Neuromantics (Great pun!), and is a series regular on the wonderful Infinite Monkey Cage. She is an accomplished public speaker, her TED talks have amassed millions of views online, and she has presented at the World Economic Forum, The Royal Institute, and the Wired UK conference. She has performed science-based stand-up comedy and has appeared at the Hammersmith Apollo, the Bloomsbury Theatre and the Latitude Festival. And to top it off, also an author or many books! In this episode, they explore: How laughter is contagious and social What words are genuinely funny…'Flank' is one…! Why brains are so fascinating these days How laughter is the ‘gateway drug' to play What happens in the brain when we are creative Why organisations need to build social spaces where laughter can live Who is Brian Helverston? And in this episode, they are lucky enough to have their listener's questions to share with Sophie. Christopher Nolan is best known for reviving the Batman film franchise and for directing the blockbusters Inception and Dunkirk. His films have taken nearly $5 billion at the box office. Born in London in 1970 to an English father and an American mother, he discovered film-making at the age of seven. In what he describes as "a leap of faith", his father lent him his Super 8 camera - and he's not stopped making films since. From youthful experiments, manipulating his action figures and shooting stop motion animations, he progressed to making short films at university where he read English - although he spent more time at University College London's Bloomsbury Theatre, home to the film society, than the lecture theatre. His first feature film, Following, had enough festival exposure and critical success to secure him his first official budget of $4.5 million to make his next film, Memento. In 2005 he was hailed for reinventing the Caped Crusader in the dark and gritty Batman Begins. He regularly works with the same actors and production team including his long-time producer, his wife, Emma Thomas. Presenter: Kirsty Young Producer: Cathy Drysdale.

For separated child migrants - or unaccompanied minors in legal terms - ‘care' is ambiguous: they may receive care because of their ‘child' status or be excluded from provision because of their ‘migrant' status. We start from the premise that care is not limited to what can be provided by an adult or the state, but can come from other separated children themselves. This episode's presenter Dr Keri Wong finds out how participatory and creative research can help researchers like Dr Rachel Rosen to unpack the complexities of contradictory and changeable immigration and welfare systems. Dr Rosen co-leads Children Caring on the Move (CCoM), a project investigating separated child migrants' experiences of care and caring for others as they navigate these systems in England. The discussion features relflection and experiences from two peer researchers, Mika and Gulli, who came to the UK as children and sought asylum here. "Stories too big for a case file: Unaccompanied young people confront the hostile environment" will be shown to public audiences during 'An evening of sensory film' at the Bloomsbury Theatre on 10 October 2022. One of the best guests in the history of the show returns. James Cleverly loves being a Foreign Office minister and tells Matt about the realities of the job and how the UK is perceived around the world. Regularly on the airwaves defending the government, James is a powerful advocate for the people and causes he believes in and he talks openly about why he's so keen to be publicly supportive. He also talks honestly about class, race and the impact of the job on his family and, in a more surprising theme of the show, which ministers are and aren't 'manscaped'. It's a classic. Everyone's favourite Conservative comedian joins Matt for a brilliant discussion about class and politics. As well as touring and appearing on various TV shows, Geoff is also on the BBC Diversity Board and tells Matt exactly what it involves and why he's so passionate about increasing class representation at the BBC. The pair also discuss the realities of being a right-of-centre comedian. Would Geoff ever vote Labour? If so could he ever tell his audience? How do his fans feel about the Tories at the moment? And would he ever stand for Parliament? It's full of insights not just about Conservative voters and what motivates them, but also about what Labour needs to do to win an election again. Strap in for the best briefing on the Spring Statement you're going to get. Paul Johnson from the IFS returns to explain everything. This is an enthralling independent analysis of Rishi Sunak's announcements this week and the impact they're likely to have. More than that, it puts the public finances and the current global economic forces into context. How does this crisis compare to the 1970s and 1990s? What can the Bank of England really do about inflation? Would a windfall tax on energy companies work? Will the fuel tax cut have any effect? Paul answers all these questions and more in his typically brilliant way. The first declared candidate in the next Tory leadership contest paints a sharp contrast with the current Prime Minister. Tom served in Iraq and Afghanistan and his shock at our withdrawal from Afghanistan is still raw. A clear thinker with strong values, Tom is a powerful communicator and offers a type of Conservativism many would prefer. He also loves Haribos and reveals which MP he's seen naked. So, something for everyone. This is a masterclass in political strategy. Blair McDougall ran the Better Together campaign in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, which resulted in Scotland voting to stay in the UK. He tells the inside story of the referendum, but also delivers nuggets of pure political gold on how to reject your opponent's framing and how to exploit weakness in an opponent's argument. Blair also takes a longer view on what strategies have and haven't worked since 2014. This is political judgement at its clearest and calmest. One of Labour's greatest ever leaders and one of British politics' greatest ever stars returns to thrill and move in equal measure. Neil Kinnock is still blessed with a command of language and sharp wits that very few politicians will ever get near. Reminiscing about being a Labour leader having to expel the hard left draws an irresistible parallel with the present, and Neil shares his analysis of Keir Starmer's leadership and the lessons he learned in making the party more electable. Neil is also a man with immense heart and this show is, at times, deeply emotional. Pour yourself a single malt, you'll be forgiven for tearing up. Glasgow politics is never dull and Mhairi Hunter has a unique perspective on it. She's been a councillor there for 10 years and faces re-election this May. She also worked in the constituency office of one of Glasgow's MSPs, Nicola Sturgeon. Glasgow is often at the centre of international attention, often hosting major events, from the Commonwealth Games to COP26. With the prestige also comes pressure and Mhairi gives a great insight into the issues the Council faces as a result. She also shares her experience of working for Nicola Sturgeon and why certain rumours about the First Minister might be completely false. Bronwyn Sweeney worked in the media for almost a decade as a copywriter and brand creative, working on everything from haircare to home furnishings. When she was 29, Bronwyn's employer paid for her to do a two-day standup comedy course – and she was smitten. She has gone from having a comedy career as a ‘bit on the side' to divulging secrets from inside the advertising industry as part of her routine on the standup circuit.Earlier this year, Bronwyn made the Grand Final of the 2021 Funny Women Awards, finishing as runner-up in front of a live audience at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London. She impressed the judges with her high-energy performance and ‘fake American from Blackpool' routine, and describes the event as the ‘best gig of my life. You're smart enough to work out what he meant, right? ;)- Several people got in touch to say they've consumed a cashew apple! The system connects on the first valid match, so phone numbers longer than 4 digits cannot start with emergency services number 999, or 111, or anything like that. The actual numbers depend on which country you're in, of course. - Not every IV is written as IV... @DavidDanaci sent in several examples of watchmakers who use IIII instead of IV on their watch faces: Patek Philippe, Breguet and Alange & Soehne. One large scale counter-example is the Great Clock of Westminster, aka the Elizabeth Tower clock, aka, the clock that houses Big Ben aka the massive clock in London colloquially known as Big Ben. Yes, Big Ben is the bell, not the clock or the tower. But you knew that already, right? - Benedikt Gocht emailed to point out that we won't be waiting for another 18 elements to reach the next noble gas, but more like 50 or 54, depending on which model you use to predict the properties of elements after 118. There go Helen's dreams of an element called "Hanon" in her lifetime...Thanks for listening! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We'll pull this apart properly in a future episode. - 20:49 - Anaesthetists @brisgasdoc and @mjtb1987 have confirmed that they use the blood oxygen level tone all day, every day with their patients. He blames it on a slip of the plane! Thanks @kaapi_croissant.- 08:22 - Our Formula One knowledge is out of date! F1 haven't allowed refuelling during pit stops since 2009... but other races still allow it, and the problem of vehicle weight vs. refuelling stops still exists. @Thexscha was the first to point this out, but many many many more of you have since then... - 20:41 - This CO2 decaffeination method uses supercritical CO2. That means CO2 at a temperature above boiling point and a pressure above atmospheric pressure, giving it the unique properties of both a liquid and a gas. It's not simply liquid Carbon Dioxide. Retro AIOTM #17 - Back to the end of June 2010 for more retro AIOTM and loads more motorcycle clothing shops. If you’re enjoying these crazy steps back in time then you can become a monthly badger here or link you Amazon Prime and Twitch Prime accounts and give us money at no cost to yourself - watch this video to find out howAs It Occurs To Me: Series 2, Episode 7: It's the penultimate episode of Season 2 and the whole country is reeling from the worst spectacle they have witnessed in years, the motorcycle clothing shop sketch. Is there any way back for us now? And is the way back to just keep doing the same sketch until people realise it is a new zenith of comedy? We've moved to the Bloomsbury Theatre because we think we're Virginia Woolf. Emma's been unable to use her new iPhone 4, Dan, who is half German has been praying for England to lose at football (so blame him) and Christian has been signing boobs because he is rock and also roll. We pull out the stops to annoy Bob Rudge and take a leaf out of the book of the lazy writers of My Two Dads. Blah blah blah Tiny Andrew Blah and we meet the odd daughter and dad from the Vodaphone adverts and eat the crumbs from out of God's kitchen bin, and what's going on with the high-backed armchair? It's repetitious and relies on stupid comedy voices and Rich has become everything he hates. But come in and join us, the cumpkins are lovely. And there's some stuff about football too. A poet in Edwardian London. A woman struggling to let her voice be heard. In 1894, sisters Charlotte and Anne Mew take a solemn vow never to marry, and never to pass on the family curse: insanity. The spinster Mew sisters descend into genteel poverty, their mother on an invalid's sofa, Anne, the painter, in a menial job. But Charlotte, the poet, will find immortality, and unexpected love. Her path will require that she keep secrets and make sacrifices that may be too much even for Charlotte's determined spirit. In Bloomsbury's Late Rose, Pen Pearson, herself an accomplished poet, has imagined a vivid and affecting story of a woman's life in Edwardian London that will engage and move every reader. ABOUT PEN PEARSON Pen is the author of Poetry as Liturgy and Bloomsbury's Late Rose, a forthcoming novel from Chickadee Prince Books about the harrowing life of British poet Charlotte Mew. The photo of Pen was taken in the public garden just a stone's throw from the house where Charlotte lived in genteel poverty with her sister Anne, an artist. Their residence has since made way for Bloomsbury Theatre, but Charlotte's unmistakable presence still haunts the garden and neighboring streets. Follow Pen if you'd like to be notified when Bloomsbury's Late Rose is released on Amazon.

We spoke to Matt about his time as a political adviser, whether it’s getting harder to make jokes about politics as the debate gets nastier and why he’s fallen out of love with the Labour party.Tickets are available now for his new show, 'Brexit Through the Gift Shop' at the Bloomsbury Theatre on May 25. New writing hits the main stage
The couple's latest film, Dunkirk, is nominated in the best picture category of the Oscars this year and Christopher has a nomination for Best Director.Presenter: Kirsty Young Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
Steve Cross joins Simon Watt to judge suggestions from Mathew Tata and Catie Williams at the Bloomsbury Theatre, UCL. In this episode the team discuss what gods they'd like to be, why naked mole rats are better than humans and whether if we level up as a species, all the challenges we face will level up too, 'to keep the comic interesting.' Theme music by Laurence Owen, graphic design by Theo Weedon, web design by Ian Bridgeman. Produced by Rachel Wheeley and supported by the Wellcome Trust. The 4th and last of our mini-podcasts is not so mini but it does feature Darren Hayman performing both sets at the two live Vitriola shows at the Bloomsbury Theatre in December 2015. Both sets are fantastic. Darren's latest album, Florence, is a huge Vitriola favourite and should be purchased immediately. I am currently in your house urinating in your cutlery drawer and no one ever reads these bits do they?

It's the penultimate episode of Season 2 and the whole country is reeling from the worst spectacle they have witnessed in years, the motorcycle clothing shop sketch.
