A report from city staff is expected to be released May 14 on whether Toronto should adopt a new “bubble” bylaw that would help protect Jewish buildings from raucous, sometimes violent, anti-Israel and antisemitic protests. The bill would cover all vulnerable communities and faith-based groups, but Jews are the ones most often targeted by hate crimes. The decision marks one of two upcoming key tests for the city's mayor, Olivia Chow, as she tries to strengthen her relationship with the city's Jewish community. The other? The 2025 UJA Walk With Israel. At a recent gathering for Jewish leaders during Passover at Toronto City Hall, Chow said that “Jewish people must feel safe” in the city. She explained why it has taken the city a long time to study the feasibility of passing such a bubble bylaw, and told _The CJN Daily _ that it would help things at the local level if Prime Minister Mark Carney keeps his campaign promise to pass similar legislation at the federal level. Meanwhile, many people are wondering whether Chow will attend the UJA Walk With Israel on May 25. While the mayor has been invited, she did not attend in 2023 or 2024. Her office told _The CJN Daily _that Chow's schedule for May has not been finalized. On today's episode, we speak to Mayor Olivia Chow, and we hear from some Jewish leaders about what they are looking for from the mayor: City Councillor James Pasternak; CIJA's chair, Elan Pratzer; and Michael Gilmore, the executive director of Kehillat Shaarei Torah synagogue, which has been vandalized more than a half-dozen times. Today, I'll be chatting with Shane O'Neill. I came to know Shane last year when I finally answered one of his many phone calls and he told me that I would be raising the Irish flag at Toronto City Hall on St. Patrick's Day. Shane is the Chairperson of the Irish Person of the Year Committee and has done tremendous work for the Irish community over the years. Coming to Toronto in 1998 after having spent ten years in London Shane's relationship with Ireland has evolved throughout the years and he regales us of this during our chat. His passion for Ireland, family and of course, rugby, is undeniable. I really hope you enjoy this chat with Borrisoleigh native, Shane O'Neill.

She is joined by Karen Stintz, CEO, Variety Village, Alex Blumenstein, Co-Founder of The Peak, and Councillor Paula Fletcher, Ward 14 Toronto-Danforth. Yesterday, the Ontario auditor general's office published its annual report—a mixed bag with healthcare nuggets, some stuff about the Ontario Science Centre, and even driver exams and three-point turns. We'll chat about the big stuff with our panel, what stood out in the report. And then, onto the rumble between Uber and the City of Toronto. Uber's throwing punches, taking the city to court over a sudden council move to freeze ride sharing licenses. Toronto City Hall's saying it's all about slashing downtown pollution and traffic jams, part of a plan for zero-emission vehicles by 2030. So, here's my question: Is this cap just the government meddling where it shouldn't? Or could the city be onto something big here? IS IT TIME TO GET RID OF THE BEER STORE? Marissa Lennox is joined by Karl Moore, Associate Professor, Strategy & Organization at McGill University and Justin Bélanger Co-owner, Brewer, Stayed Brewing Company. Will the Ford government make The Beer Store a thing of the past and is this a good idea? Our panel weighs in. CANADA'S FOOD PRICE REPORT 2024 The annual 2024 Food Price Report was released today, and Canadians hoping for better food prices going into next year may not get their wish immediately but there could be some relief later in the year as inflation cools. On this episode of The Seltzer Salon I'm joined by Canadian composer, musician, and dramaturge, Christopher Willes. He recently spearheaded the Resonance Gathering project which has evolved over its lifespan, but began as a large-scale ensemble performance of Pauline Oliveros's To Valerie Solanas and Marilyn Monroe in Recognition of Their Desperation (1970). It grew to become more than that, culminating in a double LP and book release that includes the performance (which happened in the Council Chambers at Toronto City Hall), a sound poetry piece from Oliveros's partner, IONE, and a book documenting the work. It's a stunning document of an incredible piece of work. Willes goes into detail about the origins of the idea, how it came to be, and all the various setbacks they had to overcome to make it a reality. A fascinating conversation about one of 2023's most memorable releases. Bob Komsic is filling in for Libby Znaimer today. He is joined by Toronto City Councillors Brad Bradford, for Ward 19 Beaches-East York and Stephen Holyday, for Ward 2 Etobicoke centre. It's a topic of debate at Toronto City Hall: should a term limit be imposed on Councillors? Bradford certainly thinks so. He's already tabled a motion on the matter, but it did not receive sufficient support from the rest of the council. Councillor Holyday disagrees with term limits and argues that introducing such a policy would discourage people from applying for the position, especially those in a mid-career period of life. Recently, I was at the Mayor's Black History Month celebration and to my surprise I heard Afrobeats. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would EVER hear Afrobeats in Toronto City Hall. That led me to think of how Chinedu's events and presence in the city has changed peoples awareness of Afrobeats and permitted the widespread acceptance of African culture as part of Black culture in Toronto.Today we’re talking about what it means to spread the culture. I had the chance to sit down with Chinedu Ukabam the creator responsible for Supafrik, Chinedesign, and is now putting his support behind “She Be Lady”. He is known as a tastemaker, known largely for the authentic vibe he creates at this events “Jollof Wars” and “Gumbo” and is a lover of African culture. The conversation you’re about to listen to highlights African culture’s journey to the top in the City of Toronto.
Quiggin Report #11 - Dawah At City Council: The Enemy At The Gate “Through the recitation of the prayer at issue during the municipal council’s public meetings, the respondents are consciously adhering to certain religious beliefs to the exclusion of all others. In so doing, they are breaching the state’s duty of neutrality.” - The Supreme Court of Canada 2015 The second annual Iftar dinner, marking the breaking the fast of Ramadan, was held at Toronto City Hall on 29 May 2018 at approximately 9 in the evening. It is interesting that the Toronto City Hall would allow this to happen, as it appears to be a clear violation of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling on exactly this sort of issue. The Supreme Court decision, based on a city hall case in Quebec, ruled that the state must be neutral and “This neutrality requires that the state neither favour nor hinder any particular belief.” All of this would be interesting in itself, but there is an ironic side to this story as well. Clearly written into the invitation to the event and with a large poster in City Hall Chambers is Islamic Relief Canada. The large poster was in the centre of the podium where it could not be missed.
