The Last Battle is rapidly approaching, and our Queens are here for the build-up. As they barrel towards a battle to end them all, the Queens become increasingly concerned about the constantly shortening length of Nynaeve's hair. Trollocs, Aes Sedai, prophesies, the Dark One, and so much more. In this episode, we recap the first section of The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan, summarizing the prologue through to the end of Chapter 20. Marissa and Tay highlight their fave – and least fave – sections so far, and Alix attempts to not give away any spoilers. At the end, Tay and Marissa give some predictions, as well as rate all the characters from their fave to their least fave. Alix answers some questions and the three readers discuss everything from red flags to red herrings. Egwene and Elayne meet in The World of Dreams on their way to Tanchico. Mat gets several of his staple items from a caravan of peddlers who join the Aiel. Rand tells Mat that they ride with evil now. Trollocs and myrddraal ruin a brief respite as cries can be heard out of the dark and big baddies descending on the camp of the Aiel. After an enforced break it's finally time to discuss the Wheel of Time Finale, season 1 episode 8 "The Eye of The World. Episode 8 "The Eye of The World" Synopsis and Details Based on the book series The Wheel of Time created by Robert Jordan Showrunner: Rafe Lee Judkins Episode Directed by: Ciaran Donnelly Episode Written by: Rafe Lee Judkins Story Editors: Michael Clarkson and Paul Clarkson Staff writer Celine Song In the distant past 3000 years ago, the Tamyrlin Seat warns the Dragon Reborn, Lews Therin Telamon, of the dangers of his plan to imprison the Dark One.In the present day, in the Blight, Moiraine and Rand make their way to the Eye of the World and the Dark One's prison. Having worked for 20-years for this moment, Moiraine gives Rand a sa'angreal, an ancient object to enhance his power to defeat the Dark One. Meanwhile, with Lan tracking Moiraine and Rand in the Blight, at Fal Dara, thousands of Trollocs and their Mydrahhal launch an attack. As the Shinerien army of Fal Dara falls at the defenses in the Tarwin's Gap, the Trollics charge on to destroy the city and bastion of Fal Dara. One last hope remains as Five women including Nynaeve and Egwene channel against the attack to protect the city and destroy the Trolloc army. But the effort to channel the One Power burns out all but Egwene, who is able to heal Nynaeve. During the battle inside the fortress, soldiers accompanied by Perrin seek to retrieve the Horn of Valere, an ancient object that is prophesied to summon the greatest warriors of history at the Last Battle between the Dark One and the Dragon Reborn. But they are not alone and Padan Fain with the help of two Fades steals the Horn, revealing to Perrin that he is a Darkfriend who visited the Two Rivers to find the five ta'veren. At the Eye, not even the power of Moiraine, the Blue Ajah, can stop the Dragon Reborn from being tempted by the appeal of the Dark One; as Rand is offered a vision of him and Egwene starting a family. The Dark One, Shai'tan or Ba'alzamon, tells him all he sees can come to pass if he gives his power to the Shadow. To prevent meddling from Moiraine the Dark One cuts her connection to the One Power. But as Rand is offered his choice within his mind, his unconscious body is held by Moiraine who holds a knife to his neck, prepared to slit his throat if Rand chooses unwisely. But as the Dark One's offer is rejected by Rand he awakes to attack the Dark One with the sa'angreal. In doing so he fractures one of the seals of Shai'tan's prison. In the aftermath of his confrontation with the Dark One, fearing madness, Rand decides to go into hiding. Lan finds Moiraine, who tells him that this was not the Last Battle. In the west. on the Aryth Ocean, great ships arrive, whose channellers at the bow of the ships generate powerful waves. The end of the first season is here, and reviews are...mixed. Some great heavy acting from mainstays and favorite characters, mingled with some pretty confusing lingo and concepts led to some disagreements on the episode, but we had a great time breaking this one down. With Trollocs on their heels, Chris and John team up for the first time to discuss The Wheel of Time Episode 2 "Shadow's Waiting" in full spoiler filled detail. The Wheel of Time Episode 2 "Shadow's Waiting" Synopsis and Details Based on the book series The Wheel of Time created by Robert Jordan Showrunner: Rafe Judkins Episode Directed by: Uta Briesewitz Episode Written by: Amanda Kate Shuman Story Editors: Michael Clarkson and Paul Clarkson Staff writer Celine Song Relentlessly pursued by Trollocs, Rand, Mat, Perrin and Egwene flee from the Two Rivers as they race to get to the White Tower at Tar Valon. At Taren Ferry the group manage a temporary reprieve from their hunters as they make it to safety, crossing the deep river of Taren. Once across the river, Moiraine destroys the ferry to prevent the Trollocs crossing, but this leads to the death of the Ferryman. Moiraine's apparent lack of concern for his death makes the four companions become increasingly unsure of their rescuers and differing opinions reveal cracks between the villagers. That night as the group set camp to catch their breath, Moiraine wound and use of the True Source begin to take their toll; but she also begins to teach Egwene about the oath of the Aes Sedai and reveals Egwene's ability to touch the True Power. But other magic is at play that night as all four villagers experience the same disturbing dream as they are visited by a dark figure with eyes like embers. Shaken and on edge, Rand challenges Moiraine and Lan asking them what their true intentions are for taking them to Tar Valon causing further disagreements in the group. But later that day, with Moiraine seriously weakened from her injury, the group must run for their lives as the Fade and its Trollocs finally catch up with them. To escape Lan employs a desperate tactic as they take shelter in the abandoned city of Aridahl. Now known as Shadar Logoth, the Trollocs dare not enter. That night as the others sleep Mat is woken up by noises and investigates. Outside in the street he notices what appears to be the shadow of a man, following it he is led to a small room where he discovers an ornate dagger with a ruby at its hilt, which he takes. Meanwhile the travellers horses are spooked as the shadows begin to lengthen in the city, suddenly one of the horses is consumed and turned to ash by the shadow. As the darkness spreads it separates the group as they flee to escape the city and the encroaching shadow. Rand and Mat make it to safety as do Egwene and Perrin but the group is split. Separately, Lan manages to carry Moiraine to safety, as her health fades, but as Lan stops to see what he can do a blade is pressed to his neck! We are joined today by Jason Denzel of Dragonmount again, because we talked for so long that the chapter had to be split into two parts. Illian gets a terrifying lightshow to accompany the thunder of an invading army pouring through giant gateways. The Saldaeans take the city without much fanfare, while Rand and Sammael get into a duel that wrecks the king's and council's palaces before taking their fight to Shadar Logoth instead. Trollocs and Myrddraal are sneaking about fearfully, Liah reappears briefly, and Rand falls through a floor. Before he can die an inglorious death in a lost basement, a mysterious wanderer (aka Moridin) arrives to save him, and they end up crossing balefire streams when Mashadar shows up. Rand makes a final attempt to kill Sammael but has to kill Liah instead, letting Mashadar take out Sammael in a way that we find generally unsatisfying. Rand returns to Illian and is presented with the Laurel Crown/Crown of Swords. Tedric arrives on a scene of bloody chaos as the party wraps up their fight with the berserkers. Pimur wakes up with an ear-splitting roar as he is stabilized by the warder’s experienced field care, nearly drowning out the tongue-lashing being administered simultaneously to the entire party. Quercus rebuilds the campfire and prepares tea, Amena attempts to keep Pimur from exerting himself back into unconsciousness, and Lance fills Tedric in on (the majority of) the party’s activities since leaving Dal Sherandu. In return, the party is informed that the strange army of faux-Trollocs has arrived in the vicinity of the town, and that the most elite units of the Children are out patrolling that very moment. Guarded by Tedric, the party gratefully collapses into the deep sleep of recovery. When they wake, Amena and Quercus interrogate the one berserker prisoner left over from the fight, while Pimur and Lance search the other corpses. They learn of a meeting scheduled for tonight, not far away, so of course they have to go stake it out. But other questions remain; who are these people, and what do they want? In the aftermath of the battle, the Heroes of Dal Sherandu meet their first band of Aiel, and learn that an army of false-Trollocs has been making their way west through New Malkier towards their home. Despite their enthusiasm to join forces with the Aiel and continue the chase, they recognize that they need a few hours rest before going on. They wake to find themselves alone again, and take off after their new friends. A day and a half later, the party is exhausted and still hasn’t seen signs of those they pursue, when the flare of fire reaches them through the trees. Sneaking forward, they spot some Borderlanders, but warily hold back half their strength. Lance and Quercus move forward to see what the hunters know, while Pimur and Amena hang back and keep an eye out. While uneasy conversation occupies the campfire, the novices discover proof that they have stumbled across foe rather than friends, and signal for the others to rejoin them. When the red light of attack flares in the southern sky, Pimur and Quercus have no restraint. Tearing through the woods in the predawn light, they find a party of Aiel tangled with the previously-encountered false-Trollocs. Wasting no time, they engage the clear choice of enemy. Following quickly behind, Lance dances with his swords while Amena grimly wields death. Perrin wakes up, weak and tired, but healed from the brink of death. He senses that Faile is hiding something from him, and eventually drags out of her that Loial and Gaul have gone to re-lock the Waygate against his explicit wishes. Suddenly a cry of “Trollocs!” goes up outside the inn. Although Faile manages to convince Perrin not to go charging off into battle, he does go over-see it. The defenses that have gone up up around Emond's field over the last few weeks manage to hold against what we find is a test. Essentially a probe, to learn how Emond's Field might defend itself. Mat sits in an ale house, drinking and relieving the last few hours of his life. The Battle in the Stone; Mat's life was saved by a horde of Trollocs, we'll read his flashback to you. After a Grayman makes an attempt on Rand's life while he's mid-conversation with Lanfear, he throws open the door to his apartments to find that the entire stone is under attack from Shadowspawn. Rand wades out into the madness, now unafraid of the Shadowspawn, and begins rallying defenders, Aiel, and whoever he can to defend the women and children who live in the Stone. Robert Jordan gives us a beautiful and unrelentingly brutal depiction of the battle that we will discuss line by line. Sammael sent the half dozen graymen to assassinate Rand, and the first wave of Trollocs and Myrdraal, Semirhage sent the SECOND wave of Trollocs and Myrdraal to kill the first, but once Rand comes to his senses enough to pick up Callandor, The Dragon kills them ALL. In a moment of fear, panic, and emotional distress, after creating a kind of sentient lighting which hunts all the Shadowspawn in the area into extinction, Rand attempts to save the life of a child who is lying dead in front of him. He makes her stand, restarts her heart, and makes her lungs start breathing again, all while Moiraine screams at him. Death cannot be healed, for the love of the light, not this Rand, not this... As Perrin guides the Shienaran lances south toward Cairhien, the wolves tell him there are people in the mountains to the east. The Wise Ones have sent warriors across the Spine of the World in search of their Car'a'carn. Ingtar is desperate to find the Horn, either to hand it over to the Dark in an attempt to save Shienar from oblivion, or to the light in order redeem himself, we can't say for sure. Perrin learns of the one the wolves call “Shadow Killer” who has been killing Trollocs in the countryside. An Aielman emerges from the rocky terrain, and presents himself to the party. "My name is Urien, of the Two Spires sept of the Reyn Aiel. I am a Red Shield. Remember me." Other than Rand, he is the first of the Aiel we meet in the series. Verin and Ingtar question him, and we learn a little about Rhuidean, Aiel Wise-women, He Who Comes with the Dawn, and of course, Dancing the Spears. In the after-show, we discuss the Aiel Waste, how their clothing is well designed for sun exposure, Patrick's Wheel of Time tattoos, his experiences backpacking, and living outdoors in the SW United States. We open with Loial trying to understand how Dena was able to beat him at dice so easily. Rand and Loial are attacked by Trollocs in the streets of the fore-gate. Rand kills one with is sword, and Loial kills another with his bare hands. Selene shows up out of nowhere, as usual, just as Rand and Loial are being chased to the edge of the city. Chased in the direction...of the Illuminator's compound. There is an inexplicably unlocked door that the party finds. Only one unbarred door, and it's the door Lanfear finds. How providential. What are Lanfear's motivations? Aludra is there, so close to the Dragon, and her fate is sealed from the moment Rand uses her night-flowers to effortlessly vaporize a small group of trollocs. Lanfear disappears as Rand and Loial make their escape from the compound. We chat about the mechanics of traveling with the One Power, and what it looks like. When they return to their inn, Selene has already left a note for Rand. What happens if the wrong person blows the Horn of Valere, would the pattern even allow it? Perrin truly embraces his Talent for the first time, in much the way Rand has been accepting his own power, out of necessity. Rand, Hurin, and Loial have disappeared, and Ingtar is FURIOUS. Perrin's reluctant, but he knows that he could do Hurin's job with the help of the local wolves. Perrin finds out that the wolves have named him Young Bull, and Rand has earned the name Shadowkiller. The wolves are enthusiastic to help in the hunt for Fain and his Shadowspawn. Ingtar knows about Perrin's Talent, but advises him not to tell anyone else; there are some who might misunderstand, despite wolves being considered good luck in the Borderlands. Our Party flees from Bearlon, pursued by fists of Trollocs led by multiple Fades. Lan beheads a Myrddraal, while Moiraine uses her staff to fight. We discuss how channeling can depend on physical movements. We also get into the bond between the Fades and the Trollocs. Moiraine uses the last of her strength to delay and misdirect the Shadowspawn. What's the deal with Myrddraal horses? Why does Matt speak in the old tongue?
