It's been an impressive week for the Labour government, with trade deals with both India and the US. Ed Balls and George Osborne consider: what does this say about the Starmer government's ‘softly-softly' approach to the wildly unpredictable Trump administration? Being the first in the world to ink a deal with the Americans is nothing to be sniffed at, even if it is a little light on the details – but they both agree the big prize will be a deal with the European Union.... What role will free labour movement play? And what price will Labour be willing to pay, considering the all-important need to keep voters placated on matters of immigration and the economy? Back home, Nigel Farage claims his Reform Party is now the official opposition of the land following a bruising local election for both the major parties. Ed and George consider how both Labour and the Tories will need to position themselves to keep their base. Plus, they turn to the matter of interest rates. The US Federal reserve opted to keep the base rate steady, while the Bank of England has granted borrowers something of a reprieve. What does this say about the direction of the British economy? Donald Trump's presidential election had market commenters rushing to conclude that the new administration would yield a flood of corporate dealmaking. But the widely anticipated Trump Bump for deals is already facing hurdles. Interest rates have steadily risen as the fear of inflation remains. Markets are buffeted by every piece of news about potential tariffs. And stock prices have faltered from their initial post-election surge. With Trump now in the White House, has the optimism for a dealmaking surge already withered? On this episode of On the Merits, Bloomberg Law's Roy Strom spoke with Jennifer Perkins and David Klein, M&A partners at Kirkland & Ellis, the busiest law firm for corporate transactions last year. Kirkland advised on more than $427 billion in global mergers and acquisitions over the year, surpassing rivals like Latham & Watkins, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, and Freshfields. Perkins and Klein told Roy the “floodgates” for M&A may not be open right away, but they both expect a strong year for dealmaking ahead. They discussed a backlog of companies private equity funds are looking to offload, how a reinvigorated IPO market could further fuel deals, and how law firms are evolving as private capital markets expand. In this week's episode, the Money Wise guys reflect on Wall Street's recent performance, highlighting the Dow's 0.6% drop last week, alongside gains of 1% in the S&P 500 and 3.3% in the NASDAQ. Year-to-date, the Dow is up 18.4%, the S&P 500 is up 27.7%, and the NASDAQ has climbed 32.3%. They discuss November's strong numbers, with the Dow rising 7.5%, the S&P gaining nearly 5.75%, and the NASDAQ up over 6%, driven by what they call the “Trump bump.” As they analyze the ongoing bull market that began in October 2022, the discussion shifts to expectations for a potential "Santa Claus rally" to close the year. The conversation also explores market reactions to Trump's policies, including tariffs and economic strategies, alongside the bond market's response to shifts in interest rates. The team debates the implications of Trump's negotiating tactics, which they believe are driving geopolitical and economic adjustments before his inauguration. The Trump Bump The "Trump bump" refers to the stock market rally often attributed to the economic optimism and pro-business policies associated with Donald Trump, particularly during and after his election victories. This phenomenon is driven by expectations of corporate tax cuts, deregulation, and infrastructure spending, which investors believe will boost earnings and economic growth. The term captures the market's initial surge following Trump's election in 2016 and, more recently, renewed gains linked to his anticipated policy actions in a second term. It reflects market sentiment responding to his influence on fiscal and trade policies, often seen as favorable to business and investment. In the second hour, the Money Wise guys share The Best Investment Advice Ever. You don't want to miss the details! How news publishers are adapting post-election, with Yahoo News's Kat Downs Mulder

Yahoo News, like many news outlets, had expected this year's U.S. presidential election to drag on a bit longer than it did. “You have people planning to stay in the office for several days after the fact,” said Kat Downs Mulder, gm and svp at Yahoo News, on the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast. Fortunately, news outlets are accustomed to adapting. And with Donald Trump set to retake the Oval Office, they are having to understand how they may need to adapt to either a similar Trump Bump to the traffic increases news sites saw during his first term or a potential drop off in news interest. “It's hard to predict what's going to happen in the future and whether increases will sustain and in what ways they are going to sustain. There's readers who are leaning in; they want to know everything that's going on. And then there's readers who are leaning out, and they're at that news avoidance,” said Downs Mulder, who had spent 14 years at The Washington Post before joining Yahoo News in 2022. To be clear, Yahoo News had seen audience interest in the news increase leading up to and after the election. But it had also seen some audience members indicate a bit of election burnout. “I think there's probably more of that than there was in the 2016 cycle. And so our goal at Yahoo is just to try to figure out what level the person is at and customize the experience to that, meet them where they are and give them an experience that fits whatever level of interest they have,” said Downs Mulder.

First, let's look at last week's numbers from Wall Street, which saw the Dow down 1.2%, the S&P 500 down 2.1%, and the NASDAQ down 3.1%. YTD we're still in the black, with the Dow up 15.3%, the S&P up 23.1%, and the NASDAQ up 24.4%. Was it an attack of the Fed last week? The Money Wise guys discuss how remarks from a current and former Fed Governor impacted the markets last week, as well as why it's not surprising to have a market pullback as investors come down from the post-election sugar high. They also discuss the wisdom of using a market pullback as a buying opportunity, even at high valuations. We saw some market-friendly numbers released last week with regard to inflation, and the Money Wise guys also discuss what we might expect in 2025, though much is still speculation.  What is a Market Pullback? Let's review the basics of a market pullback since we experienced one last week. A market pullback refers to a brief decline or pause in a generally upward market trend. Investors who are confident the pullback will be brief may use it as a buying opportunity, as the Money Wise guys discuss in this episode. It's been roughly a week since Donald Trump was voted into his second presidential term and already, his return to the White House is expected to send ripple effects throughout the advertising world. Publishers are considering what a second Trump presidency looks like in regards to traffic spikes and subscription revenue, otherwise known as the Trump Bump. The brand safety playbook regarding where an advertiser shows up in media may soon need to be reconsidered as more brands look to avoid backlash in the so-called culture wars. All said, it won't be until January's inauguration that the full picture of Trump's presidency comes into focus. But until then, executive editor of news Seb Joseph joins the Digiday Podcast alongside executive editor, video, audio Tim Peterson and senior marketing reporter Kimeko McCoy to discuss what a Trump presidency means for publishers on the heels of the Digiday Publishing Summit in Europe (DPSE). Also in this episode, a recap of Google's antitrust case and what happens next with the incoming administration.

Distracted Max reached new heights this week so instead of releasing the third installment of the Over the Borderline series, he mashed up two shorter Topical Creams from YouTube into an episode. Both cover familiar ground to keep a focus on what matters politically. The “silly season” is when narratives harden so sometimes it's important to reassert certain claims. The first segment is about AOC's recent decision to fund the Democratic Party in the upcoming election for the first time in her brief career. The second is a reminder that the things that people recall fondly from the Trump era were predominantly socialist-style and Keynesian interventions that provided momentary relief and financial security for all those who made it through COVID.  Chapters Intro: 00:00:18 The Evolution of AOC: 00:02:16 Behind the Trump Bump: 00:10:36 Post Show Musings: 00:18:33 Outro: 01:16:25 Resources OpenSecrets: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez  The Moscow Times: Why Is Stalin's Popularity On the Rise?
