Research to protect California wine grapes from wildfire smoke. Sacramento business incubation program CLTRE Club. CapRadio lays off staff, cancels music programs amid financial issues. Fighting Smoke Tainted Wine As wildfire smoke becomes the norm in California, winemakers are having to deal with the impact the smoke has on their product. Now, researchers at UC Davis are experimenting with ways to help protect wine grapes from the smell and taste of smoke, putting the state's multi-billion dollar industry at risk. CapRadio's Environment Reporter, Manola Secaira, joins Insight for the latest advances in technology to fight against smoke-tainted wine and the effort to keep the costs down. Plus, we'll get a virtual taste-test of what smoke-tainted wine really tastes like. Sacramento Business Incubator CLTRE Club Small businesses are core to the local economy. But it's not for the faint of heart. Getting a business off the ground and becoming successful can be tough to do alone, especially when taking on the added overhead of a storefront. A new nonprofit wants to make those hurdles less daunting for local entrepreneurs. Roshaun Davis, co-owner and founder of Unseen Heroes, discusses launching a sister non-profit CLTRE Club in midtown Sacramento, which is a business incubation pilot program and community space in partnership with the Capitol Area Development Authority (CADA). CapRadio, NSPR Layoffs and Music Program Cancellations Last week, CapRadio laid off 12% of its staff and canceled four music shows due to ongoing financial issues. The layoffs span music, news hosts, digital and include North State Public Radio based in Chico, which CapRadio operates. The Saturday program cuts are “Mick Martin's Blues Party,” “K-ZAP,” “At the Opera,” and “Hey, Listen!” In August, Tom Karlo was appointed interim general manager of CapRadio. Karlo retired from KPBS in San Diego after 47 years with the public media station. He joins Insight to explain the financial challenges that led to these cuts. Following NPR's protocol for reporting on itself, no CapRadio corporate official or news executive reviewed this segment before broadcast.

Wenn man also Raum Zeit selbst manipulieren könnte, könnte man eventuell Überlichtgeschwindigkeiten erreichen.”

Hilda N. Liswani is a sustainability leader with a focus on inclusive innovation. She has more than 10 years of experience working with policymakers, venture capitalists, corporations, and academics to develop, communicate, and implement sustainability strategies. Notable organizations include EPFL, the EU, the Mastercard Foundation, and Siemens. Through her organization WeBloom, she is passionate about diversity and inclusion to transform tech ecosystems around the world. She has been awarded the Queen's Young Leaders Award and honored as a Forbes 30 under 30. And as a Global Shaper for the World Economic Forum, she is part of a community of change makers. She believes that innovation can only reach its full potential if it involves everyone. Heidi: Hilda, you are the Executive Director of WeBloom, a non-profit organization based in Zurich. What is your vision for this organization and how did WeBloom come about? Hilda: Our vision at WeBloom is pretty bold and ambitious. We want to transform global tech ecosystems around the world and make them more inclusive. We want them to reflect the society they claim to serve. All these products and services from tech companies designed to help us, the consumers. We want them to reflect society as a whole. The reason WeBloom was created is because in the processes of tech development, tech investment, in all the different areas of the tech industry, there's just not enough inclusion of women and men or cultural minorities. And that's a really critical problem because tech impacts all of our lives. Heidi: There is a connection between diversity, inclusion and sustainability that is obvious to some people but less so to others. Hilda: The relationship between diversity and sustainability? These seem like two very different issues, but they are connected: Most sustainability solutions are actually developed by women. On the investor side, among retail investors, women tend to be more interested in supporting sustainability projects. So they are the main drivers of sustainability. And, most sustainability startups are founded by women. If women develop most sustainability solutions and at the same time do not have access to the right funding, this means that many sustainability solutions do not come to market Heidi: What do you think are the consequences of not addressing these issues? Hilda: According to McKinsey, we will lose 26% of GDP if we don't integrate all women into the economy. And at the end of last year, the Linnean Report was published: a series of studies found that many female executives are currently leaving their jobs because they cannot reconcile them with their values. And on a human level? If women are not able to participate, what does that mean for our society? What does that mean for the younger generation? How are women perceived on a daily basis? How do they experience their daily lives? So there are consequences on both the macro and micro levels. https://www.webloomglobal.com

WATER FOR WATER (WfW) is an international non-profit organisation with the vision of making the use of water resources climate-friendly and fair. Through long-term partnerships and holistic approaches, WfW sustainably improves the water and sanitation supply in Zambia and Mozambique. In Switzerland, Zambia and Mozambique, WfW places a strong focus on education and awareness-raising - always with the aim of establishing professional WASH systems and promoting the conscious use of water. Tumba M. Mupango is Programme Manager for Capacity Development at WfW in Zambia and advises the government in Zambia as a member of the Advisory Board. Question 1: Tumba, you have been working on water supply and sanitation projects in Zambia for more than ten years. Have you noticed any improvement? Answer: According to a demographic and health survey in Zambia, more than 36 percent of the population lacks access to basic water supply and more than 67 percent lack access to basic sanitation. Zambia has made many efforts to address these challenges. The development goal: to ensure access to fair and safe water and drinking water for all by 2030. Thanks to WfW, four districts of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, have already been connected to the water supply. Question 2: As part of your work at WfW, you sit on the government's advisory board in Zambia, which deals with water and skills development issues. What are the challenges? Answer: Zambia's Vision 2030 focuses on skills development and investment in educational qualifications that respond to the demands of the labour market. With this in mind, we established the Water and Sanitation Sector Skills Advisory Board, which aims to match the increased demand for skilled labour in the sector with supply. WfW has supported over 500 students to gain trade and craft qualifications in the water and sanitation sector. Question 3: What is the difference that local people in Zambia experience through skills and know-how development? Answer: In 2020, there were about 3800 secondary schools, nine public universities and about 54 private universities in Zambia. Every year, over 100,000 students graduate from secondary school and cannot get into universities because higher education and universities in Zambia are expensive compared to vocational training. Question 4: Your personal story is a difficult one, but also very inspiring. You grew up in a family with six siblings and had to take care of your family from an early age. This hard time fostered your dedication to support women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Answer: I lost my father at the age of 13, my older siblings were just 17 and the youngest 6. We were raised by my mother and many hard-working women in my extended family. Because of this experience, I have always been committed to making life better for the next generation of women. Question 5: How is safe drinking water related to gender equality? And how do the projects you run help other women? Answer: There are direct and indirect links from our projects to gender equality. One is that the provision of clean water is a time factor, during which women could better engage in other economic activities that improve their livelihoods. On skills development: Most of the students I support are girls and women. The aim is for them to be self-sufficient and to finance their own livelihood.
Mehr darüber: https://www.unseen-heroes.ch About Dr. Christin ter Braak-Forstinger: She is deeply driven to making the shift towards a regenerative economy a reality with impact investments. Christin breaks with traditional wealth management by introducing a conscious and holistic approach to investing. Conscious investors are not only value-driven but pro-actively point their money towards a sustainable future they want for themselves, their children and their planet.

Roshaun Davis is co-founder of Unseen Heroes, an award-winning events and marketing agency that he and his wife, Maritza, started a decade ago. Utilizing his creative talents to help others discover their unique strengths and gifts is Roshaun life’s passion. For him, seeing others flourish and thrive by living their ideal lives with careers they’ve imagined for themselves, creates an energy that can truly shape the surroundings of an entire city. Whether it’s a community of creatives, professionals, musicians, business owners, writers, or those who hold a simple idea, Roshaun wants individuals to experience how it feels to shape their ideal future - just as he did. Ten years ago, Roshaun found himself fired from his job. Instead of succumbing to another nine-to-five that he knew would not bring him happiness nor would it play to his creative strengths, he decided to carve his own path. Once he decided to create his own success, everything changed. Roshaun learned at one of the lowest moments in his life that he could create his ideal career by shaping his future in his mind before taking action to see his visions come to fruition through the experiences that Unseen Heroes continues to create every day. Now, hear his take on the Essential 11 questions. More places you can find Roshaun: Website - http://www.unseen-heroes.com/ Twitter - @UnseenHeroes Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/unseenheroes
During World War II, over 5,000 Jews went into hiding in Berlin to escape the Holocaust. Many survived thanks to help from neighbors or friends. Many of their descendants, fugitives and protectors alike, are friends to this day.
