It's just another thirsty Thursday…. Started things off with the Thursday Song and Brian talked about watching "Suicide Kings" last night. Discussed the results of the NBA Play-In tourney games from Wednesday night, and also talked about Caitlin Clark's introductory press conference. Had a cool story about a teddy bear drive in Nashville for abused children. In case you were unaware, today is "National High Five Day" and "National Pizza Cake Day". Talked about the weird shit that people left in Ubers last year. A couple of legendary broadcasters announced their retirements this week, including John Sterling of the Yankees and Jack Edwards of the Bruins. Meanwhile, Bill Belichick will be joining Pat McAfee for the NFL Draft. Apparently, American University has a new course on the economics of Taylor Swift. And if you thought that the Vikings were going plant-based this season, you got duped, bro. During today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about arrests being made in a major gold heist case, an 8 year-old that was driving his mother's car the wrong way with her in the backseat, a drunk boat captain that fell off the ship, thousands of bees got into a couple's walls, a woman who called the cops because she had some bad meth, a woman who tried to use her dead uncle to take money out of the bank, and a woman who got duped by a fake Aaron Rodgers profile. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. Our stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. These are arrangements, which means instead of word-for-word readings, you get a performance meant to be heard. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. For Season 6, we are ad-free again. I do this because I love mysteries, Jack does it because he loves me. Jack maybe a starving college student but it's because… We do ask you support the writers of our show. This week it's Erica Obey. Check her out on her website and social, buy and read her stories, help other readers find her. Make writing for Mysteries to Die For the best decision she could have made. In your review, tell her Tina and Jack said ‘it's safer to take the stairs'. This is Season 6, Things that Go Jack in the Night. This season contains truly imaginative mysteries around one of the most common words in the English language. From the brandy distilled from hard cider known as applejack to that nefarious one-eyed jack, to the animals, vegetables, fruits, tools, weapons, and slang, the way the word “jack” is used in the English language is truly unique, inventive, and too numerous for me to count. And yes, it is also the name of my piano player and producer. For Episode 5, the playing card the one-eyed jack is the featured jack. This is One-Eyed Jack and the Suicide King by Erica Obey.ABOUT One-Eyed JacksMr. Will Roya posted a history of playing cards back in 2018 on the website Playing Card Decks This was one of the most fascinating trips I've taken down the internet rabbit hole. Here are a few of my favorite fun facts (paraphrased, of course):• Face cards have long been an element of a deck but who is on the face card varies with deck origin. A king, a knight, a knave. A king, a queen, a prince (later called jack). A king and two knaves. (FYI a knave is a tricky, deceitful fellow according to Merriam-Webster)• 52 cards is a deck is far from standard. Some decks have 40 cards, others 48. It wasn't so much I didn't know this as I never stopped to think about it. • Hundreds of years ago, innovative printers with modern techniques who could mass produce cards and bring costs down to an "every man" level became a standard, as they were widely circulated, and had a large influence on deck of card we know today. By sheer volume, they pushed aside older styles of cards that were much more expensive and fewer people owned. • Two jacks have one-eye – hearts and spades – the others face forward, having two eyes. All the kings have weapons but only one appears to be using it on himself – the king of hearts. It actuality, it likely behind his head, as if he's going to strike. But that's not as catchy. https://playingcarddecks.com/blogs/all-in/history-playing-cards-modern-deckABOUT Erica Obeywww.ericaobey.comErica Obey is author of The Brooklyn North Murder, the first full-length Watson & Doyle mystery, as well as five other novels set in the Hudson Valley, including the award-winning The Curse of the Braddock Brides. Chris Ferguson is an American psychologist who serves as a professor and co-chair of psychology at Stetson University in Florida. He previously served as an associate professor of psychology and criminal justice at Texas A&M International University.Ferguson holds a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Central Florida. He has clinical experience with juvenile justice populations as well as conducting evaluations from child protective services. In 2013 he was given a Distinguished Early Career Profession Award, and in 2014 he was named a fellow of the American Psychological Association. In addition to his academic work, he was published a historical mystery novel entitled Suicide Kings, and more importantly, he plays in a Pink Floyd cover band called “Gods of Avalon.” He lives in Orlando with his wife and young son.I invited the professor on the show to discuss a recent piece he authored for Quillette called “Stuck in the Middle (of Academia), academia is a mess, but there is still hope.” In it, he talks about topics like suppressed speech, sacred dogma, and its effect on education, online mobs, the attack on academic freedom, and what it's like to be a tenured university professor today.I hope you learn as much as I did from Christopher.Watch Episode: This is a public episode. Suicide Kings is a 1997 American crime thriller black comedy film directed by Peter O'Fallon and starring Christopher Walken, Denis Leary, Sean Patrick Flanery, Johnny Galecki, Jay Mohr, Jeremy Sisto and Henry Thomas. Based on Don Stanford's short story The Hostage, the film follows the group of students who kidnap a respected Mafia figure. It has a 34% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $1.7 million on a $5 million budget in the US. This is a movie with huge potential that maybe didn't fully execute in the ways that it could have. Trent picked it because he found the movie back in '98 and enjoyed it for Walken's performance and the plot twists. How do the rest of the squad rate it, and what's it like in 2022? I can tell you first hand that some of the lyrics from The Alliance have stuck with me over the past 16 or so years because when you're hearing these things as an impressionable and suggestible teen, it can change the way you look and think about things. We're all shitheads and assholes but these types of bands are what make us. Maybe just a local band but certain hardcore bands influence humans. Yeah, I'm a fuckin fan. If you go back and listen to any of the albums you will notice it's usually about friendship and loyalty and working harder. A lot of that might stick with you but it's actually harder to live those words. We can always work harder. Especially me! But anyway this band has always been great, Joe has always been pretty chill and down to earth. I'm glad he took the time to come on because we talked about a bunch of things including the 6 months he spent in Thailand training Thai boxing locally and we talked a lot about that. Reallllly interesting stuff. Please go check out his new album. You can get it everywhere including spotify and other stuff. And share my shit!
