On our Australian journey, we visited Doug and Danika in Albury, NSW, whose story graced the cover of our seventh edition of We Are Makers. Meeting them and their family was a highlight of our trip. Danika and Doug met while studying design at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney in 2005. Their passion for letterpress began in the UK, where they started collecting wood type blocks from charming markets. Back in Australia in 2011, they won a fierce eBay auction for a 1920s Chandler & Price letterpress named 'Wendy', previously housed in a soon-to-be-demolished hospital. With little experience but plenty of enthusiasm, they learned the art of letterpress from Des, a former printer and mentor who taught at a printing museum in Sydney. Des, who once taught letterpress through a rigorous five-year apprenticeship, generously shared his weekends to help them master the craft. WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? On our trip to Australia, we took a flight to Adelaide to meet Heath who was featured in our 2nd Edition of We Are Makers. We were so excited to finally meet and to hear how business has been since March 2021. Timberwolf Design was initiated part-time by its founder Heath Polkinghorne in a modest garden shed (3m x 2m) back in 2015. Recognizing the need for more space to grow, Heath constructed a larger shed (10m x 5m) in 2017 to transition into furniture making full-time. Within two years, the his business had expanded beyond the confines of the home workshop, prompting a move to a 400m2 warehouse in Henley Beach in 2019. The journey from a backyard shed to a full-scale workshop with employees has been immensely challenging yet rewarding. Despite the difficulties, the experience of working independently and running a business remains unparalleled, though it comes with its set of challenges. We travelled to meet Rebecca and Craig of Struthers Watches in their workshop in Leek, England. We featured their story in Edition Two of our biannual publication; We Are Makers. It was great to catch up two years later to finally meet and have a more in-depth conversation about them and their journey.   Recently Rebecca has written her own book. Written by Rebecca Struthers and illustrated by Craig, you can order her first book 'Hands of Time', A Watchmaker's History of Time. Hands of Time is an intricate and uniquely personal exploration of the history, science, philosophy, and craft of timekeeping."When we were at uni, which is where we originally met, the two of us brought down the average age of the watchmaking course by about 40 years. One of the other students joked that time becomes more interesting the less of it that you have. It was like a retirement hobby as opposed to a career. But the watch industry has been growing massively in recent years. One school in Manchester started to teach basic manufacturing about 15 years ago, and we're now seeing graduates from that course setting up their own workshops after an initial spell in industry. The industry is getting younger and it's really promising to see." - Extract from Ed.2We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makersWebsite: https://wearemakers.shop/Struthers Interview was published in Edition Two of We Are Makers.Available for purchase:  https://www.wearemakers.shop/shop#!/Edition-TwoStruthers Watches Insta: @strutherswatchmakersWebsite: https://strutherswatchmakers.co.ukRebecca's book: https://strutherswatchmakers.co.uk/updates/2023/1/12/hands-of-time-is-now-available-for-pre-order - Like this podcast and want to watch it? But once I got there, I started driving a transfer bus for a friend's company, and I would pass all these landmarks from some of the world's top pro-cycling events. I had found myself pretty much by accident in the best cycling area in the world, just above a town called Montgenèvre. The Tour de France has started and finished a stage there, and the Giro came through my village. And if you roll down that mountain, you're then on a road that stretches all the way to Venice, and everybody who's anybody in bike manufacturing is along that road. It was great to be near all those craftspeople making the kind of bikes I wanted to build. So I just got my head down and got to work." My stone carving is simple in its manufacture, using only a mallet and chisel, but born from a wealth of knowledge gleaned over the years from highly skilled craftspeople. I once read that craft is the “seemingly impossible skill of making something by hand. Perfectly.” This is precisely how I feel about carving. For me, craft is also about the personal relationship between the maker and the material. We took a trip to visit Jamie and Lucy who run Banton Frameworks to have a long-form conversation about their business and what it's like to be a small business. They handmake spectacles and sunglasses frames from their workshop by Banton Loch, just outside Kilsyth, near Glasgow.  Extract from Edition Three, We Are Makers. Why do what you do?"It stems from Lucy's project. Behind every business there's some degree of a problem being solved – in Lucy's case, a dissatisfaction with what was available from her optician at the time. Naively, we thought that we could do it better. We can now, but it took us almost a decade to get here. The result is better and, to us, much more personal to the wearer than mass manufactured frames made in their thousands. Eyewear is almost like perfume or aftershave: apply the same perfume to 10 different people and it will smell 10 different ways. I think glasses are very much like that. Glasses are such a crucial implement – they help people see – but they are also a very personal and intimate item, as eyewear is a huge part of the wearer's identity. Glasses are quite simple objects – figures of eight with sticks on either side – but when you wear that frame for up to 16 hours a day, it represents you. I think it's important to have eyewear that is made well. I don't see it as any different to having a tailored suit, a smart pair of brogues or a nice handbag.Frames can be very mass produced and almost loveless: you go into an optician and see rows on the wall and they're basically just lens holders. Some manufacturers who we admire make very nice frames, but generally, mainstream optical brands lack the magic that we strive to produce. So why do we do it? We do it because eyewear is a balance of fashion, identity and medical aid. We think that's a pretty important range of roles for a single item." - Jamie BartlettThis video podcast was filmed in Banton Frameworks workspace in Kilsyth, Glasgow.Useful links:We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makersWebsite: https://wearemakers.shop/Banton Frameworks Insta: @bantonframeworksWebsite: https://www.bantonframeworks.co.uk/The discussions and opinions in the podcast are not necessarily the opinions of us (We Are Makers).Like this podcast and want to watch it? We took a trip to visit Stephen Cichocki at his workspace within the Sustainable Studios in Cardiff, Wales to have a long-form conversation about his business and what it's like to be a small business.Thank you also to Stephen's wife Lisa for cooking us dinner that night - it was a lovely end to our day! Stephen:“All my life I have been a maker, from using glue and matchsticks when I was a kid to carving stone for my degree in sculpture.I have always had a desire to make things with great value, that would be greatly appreciated and stand the test of time and would even one day become a family heirloom.Everything is so cheaply produced these days that it takes the value out of thingsJewellery has always been produced to commemorate a moment; the reign of a new king or queen, coming of age, a marriage, anniversary or birthday, the piece is made to remember and to celebrate. That's why I love getting to know my customers and hearing their stories, because you get to share their special moments with them and even be a little part of that."This video podcast was filmed in Stephen's workspace with the Sustainable Studios: https://www.thesustainablestudio.com/Useful links:We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makersWebsite: https://wearemakers.shop/Stephen CichockiInsta: @wooden.goldWebsite: https://www.woodengold.co.ukThe discussions and opinions in the podcast are not necessarily the opinions of us (We Are Makers).Like this podcast and want to watch it?
