Monopoly is one of the best-selling board games in history. The game's staying power may in part be because of strong American lore — the idea that anyone, with just a little bit of cash, can rise from rags to riches. Mary Pilon, author of The Monopolists: Obsession, Fury, and the Scandal Behind the World's Favorite Board Game. But there's another origin story – a very different one that promotes a very different image of capitalism. (And with two sets of starkly different rules.) That story shows how a critique of capitalism grew from a seed of an idea in a rebellious young woman's mind into a game legendary for its celebration of wealth at all costs. This episode was made in collaboration with NPR's Throughline. For more about the origin story of Monopoly, listen to their original episode Do Not Pass Go. This episode was produced by Emma Peaslee, mastered by Natasha Branch, and edited by Jess Jiang. The Throughline episode was produced by Rund Abdelfatah, Ramtin Arablouei, Lawrence Wu, Laine Kaplan-Levenson, Julie Caine, Victor Yvellez, Anya Steinberg, Yolanda Sangweni, Casey Miner, Cristina Kim, Devin Katayama, and Amiri Tulloch. It was fact-checked by Kevin Volkl and mixed by Josh Newell.Subscribe to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney
Stemming gun violence is back on the legislative agenda following three mass shootings in less than a month, but it's hard to predict success when so many previous efforts have failed. Meanwhile, lawmakers must soon decide if they will extend current premium subsidies for those buying health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, and the Biden administration acts, belatedly, on Medicare premiums.Margot Sanger-Katz of The New York Times, Sandhya Raman of CQ Roll Call, and Rachel Cohrs of Stat join KHN's Julie Rovner to discuss these issues and more. Also this week, Rovner interviews KHN's Michelle Andrews, who reported and wrote the latest KHN-NPR “Bill of the Month” episode about a too-common problem: denial of no-cost preventive care for a colonoscopy under the ACA. Plus, for extra credit, the panelists recommend their favorite health policy stories of the week they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: NPR Throughline's “Before Roe: The Physicians' Crusade,” by Rund Abdelfatah, Ramtin Arablouei, Julie Caine, Laine Kaplan-Levenson, Lawrence Wu, Victor Yvellez, Casey Miner, Yolanda Sangweni, Anya Steinberg, and Deborah George Rachel Cohrs: The Wall Street Journal's “Baby-Formula Shortage Worsened by Drop in Breast-Feeding Rates,” by Jennifer Maloney Margot Sanger-Katz: The Washington Post's “Opinion: Breastfeeding Isn't ‘Free.' Brian Flores is not messing around. The former Miami Dolphins head coach was fired last month, and had his eyes set on the top job with the New York Giants. But a misdirected text from New England Patriots general manager Bill Belichick convinced Flores, who is Black and Latino, that the hiring process was rigged against him, and that race was a major factor. He responded to the NFL by filing a class-action lawsuit on Tuesday. He was one of only three Black head coaches in the NFL at the time of his firing, in a league that has a majority of Black players. The lawsuit accuses the league of systemic racism and discriminatory hiring practices. It's made for a whirlwind 48 hours for Flores, who did not come to the decision to take legal action lightly. And it's arguably a louder stand than when Colin Kaepernick took his knee and paid the price. In this episode of The Limits, host Jay Williams sits down with Flores to talk about the change he hopes to inspire in the NFL, and the sacrifices he's willing to make to see that change take flight. Two months into 2021, and we're still at home, but we know we're not the only ones. At least we have streaming, food delivery, and podcasts (wink, wink) to keep us company. Speaking of streaming...lately, our Friday nights have been spent watching 90's and early 00's re-runs. That's why we're beyond excited for the return of Coming to America (available on Amazon Prime March 5th). It's the best of both worlds - old-school nostalgia and new content for the weekend. To get us in a regal state of mind, Academy Award-Winning Costume Designer, Ruth E. Carter, stopped by (virtually of course), to give Cori and Charli some tips, and share anecdotes about her 30-plus year career, styling some of our favorite celebrities for the most iconic movies.NOTE: This episode is sponsored by Crown Royal So, what's your favorite moment from the original Coming to America? We keep scoring conversations with legends lately and we ain't even mad at it! This week, Cori (@corimurray), Charli (Twitter: @ManWifeDog, IG: @charlipenn), and guest host, Julee “Global” Wilson (@MissJulee) had THEE best time with Gospel royalty Bebe Winans (@bebewinans)! We were able to tell him all the ways his music has changed our lives and learn why he says his new album - Need You (out now) is his best body of work. Between all the laughs Mr. Winans offered the best nuggets of inspiration for the tough times and how he lost 80 pounds without dieting! Bonus: Bebe left us with some of his most cherished memories with the beloved Luther Vandross and Whitney Houston. And don't worry - we kept it classy while explaining what exactly a “bearded bae” is and how he fits the profile. The ladies are AFTER him on The ‘Gram and his beard needs its own IG account, ok?! Cori and Charli stanned really #hoord for this week’s guest. Borderline embarrassingly so. It’s only because he’s so cool and chill and has HITS for days! Raphael Saadiq (@raphael_saadiq) aka ⅓ of Tony! Toni! Toné! aka Still Ray stopped by to talk about his latest album “Jimmy Lee” and gave us some little-known insight into his childhood, his early music choices, and his personal philosophy for turning out hit after hit over the years. Charli got to ask the question that’d been burning for quite a while: “What’s the story behind “Ask Of You”? (If you’re a REAL Raphael Saadiq fan and real 90s R&B/movie fan, you’ll want to rush to -insert timestamp- for that answer!) What’s your favorite track that Raphael Saadiq has blessed? SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: This is our first crossover episode between Yes, Girl! and The Solve Podcast! Cori (@corimuray) and Charli (Twitter: @ManWifeDog, IG: @charlipenn) have a good time chatting about this week’s topic - something we all either hear or talk about (or both) on the regular: Sex and relationships. For many, much of the advice we received wasn’t completely healthy or accurate. But never fear! This week’s guest - the one and only, renowned sexpert, Shan Boodram aka Shan Boody (@shanboody) is here to dispel rumors, myths, and outright lies about how we should be engaging sex, dating, and our relationships with our own bodies. She lays out a whole plan and petition for why we need sex re-education and even challenges us to think about flirting differently. Shan also drops the basics of sex and socialization that will make you take inventory of what you believe about your body, how you date, and what to expect in the bedroom. (Sidebar: Something that Cori and Charli are quite concerned about is getting to “100% THAT BITCH” levels like the great Lizzo. What’s your percentage and what advice do you have for helping Cori and Charli get their numbers up?) Let us know by using #YesGirlPodcast! Visit www.thegameofdesire.com to grab your copy of Shan's book that EVERYONE is talking about!**This episode is sponsored by MAC Cosmetics.**Yes, Girl!
