Many of us remember the late 90s ska-fueled song "Zoot Suit Riots," but many may not know the song is based on a real event, in which racial tensions in 1940s Los Angeles exploded into a series of attacks on Mexican-Americans by Navy servicemen, culminating in a 5-day riot. This week we dive into that story, as well as talk current news stories like what on earth is happening with DOGE and "The Gulf of America," Portland's shortest race with the Unipiper, who is most likely to fall for disinformation online, and a viscous banana attack in 7-11.  This shit is B-A-N-A-N-A-S.

Crime and Punishment Series. Episode #3 of 4. In the summer of 1943 the city of Los Angeles erupted into what has become known as the Zoot Suit Riots, where roving bands of white servicemen beat and stripped Mexican American youth of their distinctive zoot suits. The riots took place amidst the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial- a case characterized by the press as a crackdown on Mexican American juvenile “delinquency.” In today's episode, part of our Crime and Punishment series, we're exploring the tender box that was Los Angeles during World War II.  Find transcripts and show notes at: www.digpodcast.org Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, I had the pleasure of sitting down with two key figures from the Gables of Ojai as the beloved senior living facility celebrates its 70th anniversary. Matteo DiGrigoli, the Gables' executive director, and David Brown, CEO of Somera Capital Management, joined me to reflect on the institution's rich history and its future. The Gables has long been an integral part of Ojai, originally founded in 1954 by the inspiring leadership of Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, who shortly after in 1957 founded the American Association of Retired Persons. The membership grew quickly from zero to 400,000 in 1962 before moving to Long Beach, then Washington, D.C. and now under Somera's guidance since 1999. This milestone year is the perfect moment to take stock of how far the Gables has come and the profound impact it continues to have on the community. David Brown shared fascinating insights into the pivotal moment when Somera Capital acquired the Gables from the AARP in 1999. He discussed the vision behind the transition and how the facility has evolved over the past two decades to meet the changing needs of Ojai's senior population. Matteo DiGrigoli brought a unique perspective, having taken the reins as executive director during the pandemic. He shared the challenges and triumphs of navigating such an unprecedented time, underscoring the resilience of the residents, staff, and families who trusted the Gables as a safe haven. As we look ahead to the anniversary celebration on Saturday, September 28th, both executives emphasized the importance of community connection and innovation in senior care. From their stewardship during trying times to their forward-looking vision, it's clear that the Gables remains a pillar of Ojai life, continuing to honor its past while shaping a bright future for its residents. We talked about the Zoot Suit Riots, culinary artistry and the formidable, six-foot-tall red-headed firebrand that was Dr. Andrus. We did not talk about Rene Redzipi's show "Omnivore," Ojai's pixie tangerine harvest or Tuvan throat singing. Zoot Suit Riots, a series of conflicts that occurred in June 1943 in Los Angeles between U.S. servicemen and Mexican American youths, the latter of whom wore outfits called zoot suits. The zoot suit consisted of a broad-shouldered drape jacket, balloon-leg trousers, and, sometimes, a flamboyant hat. Mexican and Mexican-American youths who wore these outfits were called zoot-suiters. Pressures related to U.S. involvement in World War II contributed to the racial tensions that preceded the riots. As part of the war effort, by March 1942 the United States had begun rationing various resources. Restrictions on wool had a direct effect on the manufacture of wool suits and other clothing. There were regulations prohibiting the manufacturing of zoot suits, but a network of bootleg tailors continued to manufacture them. This exacerbated racial tensions, as Mexican American youths wearing the zoot suits were seen as un-American because they were deliberately ignoring the rationing regulations. Hello and welcome back to Breakfast with Mom.Today discuss the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots.  These riots took place from June 3 to June 8, 1943, primarily between American servicemen, who were predominantly white, and young Mexican American and Mexican immigrant men, who were often seen wearing distinctive "zoot suits."  The zoot suit was a flamboyant style of clothing characterized by oversized suits with high-waisted, pegged trousers and long jackets. The riots were fueled by social tensions, wartime anxiety, and racial prejudice. Many members of the U.S. military stationed in Los Angeles viewed the zoot suit as a symbol of rebellion and nonconformity, associating it with Mexican American youth gangs.Today I want to shout out Tapanga, she is listening from the DFW area.  Tapanga, thank you for listening! Please remember to leave us a rating and review and to drop us a message on any of our socials letting us know who you are and where you listen so we can give you a shout out in a future episode.Resources:https://www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/zoot-suit-riots#a-badge-of-delinquencyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoot_Suit_Riotshttps://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/zoot/#part01https://www.britannica.com/event/Zoot-Suit-Riotshttps://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/zoot-suit-riots/Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Zoot Suit Riot [Official Video]All the things: Music: "A Sip of Coffee to Relieve Stress" by Katzen TupasLogo Artwork: Strawbeary Studios https://www.youtube.com/@StrawbearyStudios/featuredEpisode was researched, written and edited by ShanoaSocial Media:  https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090200010112X (formerly Twitter): @breakfastmompodEmail: breakfastwithmompodcast@gmail.comWebsite: https://breakfastwithmompodcast.com/

“The first uniquely American suit,” is how Clarissa Esguerra, a Los Angeles County Museum of Art curator of costume and textiles, describes the Zoot suit. Known for its wide-legged pants and long coats, the Zoot suit became infamous in June 1943. That was when servicemen, police officers and white civilians attacked the young Mexican, Filipino and Black Americans who donned the suits in what became known as the Zoot Suit Riots. To commemorate the riots' 80th anniversary this month, the L.A. Times put together a multimedia project tracing the suits' legacy and status today as a symbol of Chicano pride — while noting the paper's own culpability in anti-Mexican American sentiment at the time. We'll speak with the reporters and editor who authored the project and hear your reflections. Here at This Was A Thing, we're no fashionistas (although Ray would argue otherwise), but even with our limited knowledge, it's hard to avoid noticing the current trend of tapered, tighter clothes. But in the early 1900s, a garment rose to popularity that shunned that trend toward tightness, boasting extra fabric and a looser fit. More than that, this particular clothing item became so identified with certain groups that its name was used when describing a notable riot in the 1940s that was emblematic of social tensions of that time, and involved United States servicemen, the Latin-X and Mexican-American community and a mysterious, unsolved murder…Ray teaches Rob about the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots which occurred 80 years ago this week, and the events which precipitated so much violence and unrest; how London's “drape suit” traveled across the pond, got a name change, and was sported by celebrities from Cab Calloway to Frank Sinatra; the 1990s swing revival that brought back both the music and clothing of that era (and produced some famous earworms); and why these riots provide one of the earliest examples of clothing styles becoming synonomous with cultural tensions between different social and ethnic groups. If you like what we are doing, please support us on Patreon.TEAMRay HebelRobert W. East West Players is an Asian American theatre organization in Los Angeles, founded in 1965. As the nation's first professional Asian American theatre organization, East West Players continues to produce works and educational programs that give voice to the Asian-Pacific American experience today. According to the theatre's website "East West Players' current home is in the upper 3 levels of the Union Center for the Arts in the northwestern end of the Little Tokyo Historic District. The company had spent the previous 32 years since its founding in a 99-seat theatre in Silver Lake before moving to the new David Henry Hwang Theatre in the Union Center for the Arts in 1998. The Union Center for the Arts was formerly Union Church, the combined home of three Japanese American congregations, was completed in 1923. With the onset of World War II, it was in front of this building that residents of the district joined the residents of Terminal Island, whose community had been razed 48 hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Residents lined up with a single suitcase allowance awaiting transportation to join 10,000 people sent to the War Relocation Center in Manzanar in 1942. Most of those transported to the internment camps lost all of their property and were unable to return to living in their old community after the war, scattering the population throughout the city. During the war, the building was used as a community center for African Americans arriving from the deep south in search of work in wartime industry as part of the ‘Great Migration'. The neighborhood had some of the only housing in the city that did not have restrictive housing covenants based on color, and quickly became highly populated. Three years into the war, the neighborhood was renamed Bronzeville, and was home to crowded conditions and ‘breakfast clubs' – jazz clubs that were known to stay open until dawn. In 1943, a part of the ‘Zoot Suit Riots' spread into the area. At the close of 1945 the Japanese Americans gradually began re-establishing a community center, where Little Tokyo remains a very diverse part of central Los Angeles. The building located on Judge John Aiso Street was damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, leaving it unusable. The Little Tokyo Service Center Community Development Corporation completed a multi-million dollar renovation of the building in 1998 to house three arts organizations – the East West Players, Visual Communications, and LA Artcore. " BUT!  What is causing the haunting at this historical location? Our guest today is 80s star, multiple-awards film, and theater actor, and activist, Edward James Olmos.Olmos's roles in films or TV shows like Stand and Deliver, Battlestar Galactica, broadway musical and film Zoot Suit, Blade Runner as detective Gaff, and many others are some of the most memorable of all time and he's still dominating our screens. While I could not resist talking about his iconic roles over several decades, we mainly discussed Olmos' new must-see film, Chasing Wonders. The picturesque Australian/British drama was the official selection at the Adelaide film festival in 2020. The beautiful cinematography of the film was shot over a five years period to authentically capture the coming of age story by screenwriter, Judy Morris. Chasing Wonders is a story of hope, possibility adventure, and overcoming your past – a heart-warming story of a young boy, who, encouraged by his grandfather (Olmos) to live a life of hope and possibility, takes off on the adventure of a lifetime to find the magical Emu Plains. His journey through the lush landscapes of Australia and Spain leads him to the heart of the human condition – learning to acknowledge the complexity of what comes before us but struggling not to be defined by the past. The Hollywood Walk of Famer earned an Academy nomination for Best Actor in the 1988 drama, Stand and Deliver. He gave a stellar lead performance as Bolivian- American educator Jaime Alfonso Escalante Gutiérrez.Olmos filmography is quite extensive. Literally, the man has stayed booked and busy since 1974. He's appeared in over 130 films, TV shows, and plays. One of his outstanding roles is perhaps,  Lieutenant Martin Castillo in the Miami Vice (1984) as a series regular. A fan-favorite for sure. But if we do talk about Lieutenant Castillo we must mention Olmos' role as Detective Gaff in Blade Runner (1982) and a brief reprise in the sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Gaff is the Los Angeles police officer who detains and escorts Deckard (Harrison Ford) throughout his mission as a ‘Blade Runner' to track down bioengineered humanoids known as replicants and terminally “retire” them.Olmos showed the world his versatility in both the Broadway play and film adaptation of the musical comedy, Zoot Suit. The story weaves the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial – resulting in the racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles. Olmos portrays El Pachuco, an idealized Zoot Suiter, who functions as narrator throughout the story and serves as Henry's conscience in both adaptations.Honestly, I could go on and on down Olmos' filmography, but we can't spotlight all of his other spectacular films right now. So, let's get into this interview, shall we?Don't forget to click the links in the show notes to watch Chasing Wonders. Please enjoy my conversation with Edward James Olmos.

Welcome to Ska Boom Interviews, which is the audio companion to my new book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available through DiWulf Publishing.   Click here to order: http://www.diwulf.com/books  In this episode, I'm speaking with music journalist and author Ken Partridge, whose new book "Hell of a Hat: The Rise of 90s Ska and Swing" is now out and available. Ken is a writer and editor with bylines in leading music publications including Billboard, The AV Club, Pitchfork, The Atlantic, USA Today, The Village Voice, and Genius, where he works as a managing editor.  Hell of a Hat is the third American ska book to be released in 2021 – after Aaron Carnes book “In Defense of Ska and my book. This is a pretty extraordinary turn of events given that there had been a grand total of zero books about American ska previously.  Ken makes the case in his book that the relative economic prosperity and general optimism of the late '90s created the perfect environment for fast, danceable music that--with some notable exceptions--tended to avoid political commentary.I speak to Ken about his ska "lightning bolt" moment and how he became a music journalist working for the Hartford Courant right out of Boston University.  We also compare notes on our  book writing experiences, discuss the importance of Hot Topic in outfitting would be suburban ska fans and discuss the meteoric rise of swing in the 90s, its impact on 90s pop culture and the Zoot Suit Riots of the mid 40's.  Please note: The music clips included in this podcast fall under the “Fair Use Doctrine” as defined by Section 107 of the Copyright Act. The law allows for use of music clips for purposes of criticism, comment, and news reporting.

Our guest today is 80s star, multiple-awards film, and theater actor, and activist, Edward James Olmos. Olmos's roles in films or TV shows like Stand and Deliver, Battlestar Galactica, broadway musical and film Zoot Suit, Blade Runner as detective Gaff, and many others are some of the most memorable of all time and he's still dominating our screens. Chasing Wonders is a story of hope, possibility adventure, and overcoming your past - a heart-warming story of a young boy, who, encouraged by his grandfather (Olmos) to live a life of hope and possibility, takes off on the adventure of a lifetime to find the magical Emu Plains. He gave a stellar lead performance as Bolivian- American educator Jaime Alfonso Escalante Gutiérrez. Olmos filmography is quite extensive. But if we do talk about Lieutenant Castillo we must mention Olmos' role as Detective Gaff in Blade Runner (1982) and a brief reprise in the sequel Blade Runner 2049 (2017).Gaff is the Los Angeles police officer who detains and escorts Deckard (Harrison Ford) throughout his mission as a ‘Blade Runner' to track down bioengineered humanoids known as replicants and terminally "retire" them.Olmos showed the world his versatility in both the Broadway play and film adaptation of the musical comedy, Zoot Suit. The story weaves the real-life events of the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial - resulting in the racially fueled Zoot Suit Riots throughout Los Angeles. Olmos portrays El Pachuco, an idealized Zoot Suiter, who functions as narrator throughout the story and serves as Henry's conscience in both adaptations.Honestly, I could go on and on down Olmos' filmography, but we can't spotlight all of his other spectacular films right now. So, let's get into this interview, shall we?

In this year of racial reckoning, our first Save As interview explores sites of violence against people of color."Lurking beneath empty lots, nondescript intersections, and even this city’s most stately landmarks are stories of strife and oppression, largely invisible," wrote recent graduate Jackson Loop in his master's thesis about preserving sites of racial conflict in Los Angeles.Jackson talks with producer Willa Seidenberg about the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots, the 1969 police raid on the Black Panthers' L.A. headquarters, and the 1992 uprising surrounding the vicious beating of Rodney King.Examining sites associated with these events underscores systemic flaws in the current, top-down process of preservation--as well as solutions emerging from the ground up.Why is it important to remember painful history, and how can we do it when the physical presence is erased?

Welcome to Season 6 of Talk Art! Recorded on 10th April 2020, we chat to Troy Michie, the acclaimed American collage artist, painter, interdisciplinary installation artist, and sculptor based in New York City. Michie's work is often in dialogue with the canon of collage; as well as investigating society's understanding of race, gender, sexuality, and other fields of identity and power. This episode is released on the anniversary of the Zoot Suit Riots in Los Angeles from June 3-8th 1943, which has been frequently referenced in Michie's work.We discuss the history of collage, vintage erotic and pornographic magazines, his hometown of El Paso, a border city between USA and Mexico, growing up bilingual, lies about immigration, racial stereotypes, media misconceptions and the ‘fear of the other’. We explore woven paper collage, a new development in Troy’s practice, as well as assemblage works on wooden panels, and sewing through paper. We explore the 1943 Zoot Suit Riots and his body of work referencing the dapper & flamboyant Zoot Suit style, Jazz music, Pachuco culture and its long lasting impact on popular culture including mainstream films Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Bugsy Malone and Dick Tracey. We discuss camouflage theory & Roland Penrose's disruptive patterning theory, Razzle Dazzle warships, queerness and the camouflaging the self within society, safety of marginalised communities and in particular the violence and murders of the transgender community in New York. His admiration for Nancy Brooks Brody, Mark Bradford, Magritte and the Surrealists, Méret Oppenheim, Frida Kahlo, Hannah Höch, Nouveau réalisme, Kara Walker, John Stezaker, Wangechi Mutu and Wilfredo Lam. We reflect on his works in shows at New Museum, the Whitney Biennial 2019 and his primary gallery Company. We discover the inspiration he drew from The Invisible Man novel and how he hopes to honour the memory of his grandmother and his family of hard working women, growing up listening to eclectic music by Sugar Cubes to Aretha Franklin and writing songs himself.Follow @TroyMichie on Instagram, his official website https://www.troymichie.com/ and please also visit Troy's gallery @CompanyGallery and their website https://companygallery.us/. For this latest episode of Latino Rebels Radio, we're featuring one of the summer shows from our friends at the Latino Media Collective. What can the Zoot Suit Riots of 1943 teach us about anti-immigrant, anti-Latino sentiment in the U.S. today? Before today’s concept of “fake news,” how racist and inflammatory was yellow journalism during this dark period in California history? The LMC speaks with Gerardo Licón on what we can learn from the riots. Licón is an assistant professor in the Program of Latin American Studies at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire. The word “riot” here is really a misnomer. This conflict wasn’t so much about property damage as it was about attacking people. It also wasn’t really about the zoot suits – although they had come to symbolize A LOT in Los Angeles when this happened.  Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
