Die «einzelnen Geschichten» seien «packend und oft voller Schalk erzählt», findet Felix Münger. Allerdings fehle es dem Roman leider an der nötigen Fokussierung, sodass am «am Ende nicht recht klar» sei, «welche Geschichte Zwicker nun tatsächlich erzählen will». Der neue Roman des österreichischen Erfolgsautors Wolf Haas überzeugt einmal mehr durch seine Machart, geht es doch um einen Mann namens Franz Escher, der auf den Elektriker wartet und dabei ein Buch über einen Mafia-Kronzeugen liest. Dieser wiederum sitzt im Gefängnis und wartet auf seine Entlassung, wobei er ein Buch über einen gewissen Franz Escher liest, der auf den Elektriker wartet. Auf brillante Weise verbindet Wolf Haas zwei Geschichten, indem er immer die eine aus der anderen entstehen lässt. Ein typsicher Wolf Haas, findet Michael Luisier, der das Buch am Literaturstammtisch vorstellt. Im Bilderbuch «Earhart – Der abenteuerliche Flug einer Wühlmaus um die Welt» erzählt der deutsche Autor und Illustrator Torben Kuhlmann die Geschichte der US-amerikanischen Flugpionierin Amelia Earhart. Es ist das fünfte Buch einer Serie, in der Kuhlmann eine Maus eine Pionierleistung erbringen lässt. Besonders die grossartigen Illustrationen und filigranen Zeichnungen, inspiriert von Fotos aus den 1920-er Jahren, begeistern Britta Spichiger, die dieses Bilderbuch heute vorstellt. Abstract: The Zwicker tone illusion can serve as an interesting model for acute tinnitus, an auditory phantom percept still not fully understood. Recent mechanistic models suggest that the underlying neural mechanisms of both percepts are similar. However, to date it is not clear if animals do perceive the Zwicker tone at all, as up to now no behavioral paradigms are available to objectively assess the presence of this phantom percept. Here we introduce, for the first time, a modified version of the gap pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle reflex (GPIAS) paradigm - usually used to assess the presence of a tinnitus percept in animals - to test if it is possible to induce a Zwicker tone percept in our rodent model, the Mongolian gerbil. Furthermore, we developed a new aversive conditioning shuttle box learning paradigm and compare the two approaches. We found a significant increase in the GPIAS effect when presenting a notched noise compared to flat white noise gap pre-pulse inhibition, indicating that the animals actually perceived a Zwicker tone. However, in the aversive conditioning learning paradigm, no clear effect could be observed in the discrimination performance of the tested animals. When investigating the CR+ responses, an effect of a possible Zwicker tone percept can be seen, i.e. animals show identical behavior as if a pure tone was presented, but the paradigm needs to be further improved. This week I'm talking to friend and guest SYDNEY Zwicker, a Holistic Pelvic Care practitioner based in Colorado. Syd's one of those people who has that time traveller quality about her - wise beyond her years and has an ability to push boundaries and facilitate healing for women of all ages. We met when we were both doing our Qoya teacher training and she felt I'd known forever. Sydney came to her work through her own healing from sexual abuse in her late teens. In her words, she tried it all. From alcohol and meaningless sex, to talk therapy, dance therapy, jade eggs, energy healings, hitting a giant foam block with a baseball bat, screaming into a pillow, and everything in between. Though each time she removed a layer of the hurt, she always felt like there was something she couldn't reach physically. Then she discovered Holistic Pelvic Care, and her world opened. She was finally able to de-armour and heal and for the first time, she was able to release it from the physical body. Sydneys mission is to shed the stigma around the female lived experience through awareness, education, and holistic healing. Sydney shares with us the power of holistic pelvic care and the value of de-armoring ourselves. Recently a friend sent me a photo on the Nat Geo Instagram account and said, “Hey, this could be a great story for your podcast”. It was a photo taken by Trevor Frost of Samantha Zwicker, a PhD student from the University of Washington with an ocelot deep in the Peruvian Amazon. I don't know if this was intended, but this photo really reminded me of that famous photo of Jane Goodall, touching the hands of an infant chimpanzee in Gombe, Tanzania. But just like that photo, there's a fascinating story behind this photo too. In August, 2018, Sam received an emergency message from the local community, that there was a small wild cat wandering the floor of a community store. It was that ocelot in the photo - Keanu. His mother had been killed due to logging and as a small kitten he was destined for the illegal wildlife trade. Sam, however, had a bright future planned for Keanu. One without cruelty, one without fences - a future at home, free and wild in the Amazon. This is the story of Sam and her not-for-profit Hoja Nueva - a beacon of hope deep in the jungle of the Peruvian Amazon, where every day they rehabilitate and rewild threatened wildlife, just like Keanu, the ocelot. The majority of bowling alleys across Oregon had to shut down again when Gov. Brown imposed stronger coronavirus restrictions in November. Some, like Tawnya Zwicker's bowling alley Silver Creek Lanes in Silverton, had been open since June. Others, like those in Portland, only just reopened in mid-November for the first time since March. We check in with Zwicker, who is also the executive director of the Oregon State Bowling Proprietors Association, about how bowling alleys across the state are faring through the pandemic.
