Hello everyone! I have been away longer than usual between episodes due to circumstances, and I appreciate you all coming back to listen. As a kind of compensation, this is a long one today—I got to talk to one of my favorite people to get into it with, Conner Habib. We had recorded a conversation along with Dean Spade in the approach to the election in order to reorient people's thoughts and attention towards politics beyond the state—and so we decided to reconvene, the two of us, post-election, to discuss the relationship of feeling to thinking and doing. There was of course an intensity of feeling after the election, with many claims about how people should respond and act. Instead of going that route, Conner and I try to explore ways of not giving up our feelings and power to the spectacle of politics and everything it demands from us. In doing this, we aim to expand the possibilities of action, and to reconceive our relationship to the political in a way that develops a new language or a new grammar that no long constrains us. Along the way, we talk about nottaking materialism as the only basis for politics, which gets us into both religious forms of power and the consideration of a spiritual relationship to the self and the world. As I say at the end, Conner's podcast, Against Everyone /w Conner Habib, is an incredible resource that dives into many of these ideas through discussion and thinking. Conner references a recent series of episodes he published as a guide to engaging in a spiritual life. That might be a great place to start if you have not already listened to his podcast. He also wrote the intense novel, Hawk Mountain, which I also highly recommend. Subscribe to Conner's Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/ConnerHabib), and find Hawk Mountain here. Remember, as always, we have an online submission form at https://form.jotform.com/thebreakuptheory/stories and a phone line at (917) 426-6548. Please write and call us, to share your break up stories, your questions about ending things, and your hopes for liberation! Our letters episodes are a recurring feature on the show, and we find that our writers appreciate the ways we help think of these situations, so keep writing us! In this episode, Shuli talks with Conner Habib, author of the novel Hawk Mountain and host of the podcast Against Everyone with Conner Habib. The discussion goes into many different places, with certan themes about the connection between relationships and politics running throughout. We start this discussion talking about “breaking up with the state,” an idea Conner discussed on a couple of his podcast episodes and that was influential in Shuli's thinking about the crossover of relationships and politics. The conversation uses both personal and political perspectives to think about the dynamics of the failing state, its fascist grasps at power, what protest can do, how we respond to harm and conflict, and more. Hope you like it! You can find Conner and his podcast at: patreon.com/connerhabib You can buy Hawk Mountain here: https://bookshop.org/a/4714/9781324064862

This week on Transmissions: Conner Habib. He's the author of the Pen/Faulkner award longlisted horror novel, Hawk Mountain, and the host of the weekly podcast Against Everyone with Conner Habib. Informed by his practice of Anthroposophy and Christian mysticism, AEWCH focuses on the esoteric and ventures into strange and unusual places, touching frequently on Habib's spiritual views while also exploring his views on sex work, his interest in art and literature, punk rock ethos, and his singular conversational style. This last September, Habib devoted a whole month to exploring the mystic possibilities of music with guests like Bonnie Prince Billy and Nina Persson of the Cardigans, and he's featured guests like Ian McKaye, Stephen Malkmus, and Ted Leo, so we pick up where that series left off and dive into the musical, occult, and conversational deep end. Next week on Transmissions? Penelope Sheeris—director of The Decline and Fall of Western Civilization series, Wayne's World, and host of Peter and the Acid King, a podcast dedicated to the mysterious life and death of Peter Ivers.
Make yourself comfortable and relax, on this all-new episode of Transmissions, we're focusing on the fantastic tunes crafted by John Caroll Kirby. You've heard a lot about him in our previous episode with Eddie Chacon. John's music exemplifies the current zone where jazz, fusion, new age, soul, R&B, and electronic composition all mingle; in addition to Eddie, he's worked with artists like Blood Orange, Solange, Frank Ocean, and many more. But it's his own records, including this year's Blowout, that demonstrate his compositional chops. Like many of his records, the native Angeleno recorded it far from home, in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Travel is a constant for him—see his incredible web series Kirby's Gold, a travelouge that finds him trying on his best Huell Howser with musicians all around the globe. This week on the show we discuss getting out into the world and much more. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Next week on Transmissions? Conner Habib of the essential culture and philosophy podcast Against Everyone joins us for a rollicking conversation. We hope you'll join—until then, this Transmission is concluded.
To kick off my new season focused on "the problems of the world," Conner Habib and I discuss the depth of spiritual activity needed to understand the truth of how peace is created and why peace is becoming a possibility for humankind now more than ever. His perspective on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the suffering and possibility of redemption is profound and offers a picture of a way forward. What begins to unfold and unfurl when we explore the presence and meaning of horror in art, in life and in the story of Christmas and Epiphany? We hope you will join us for this nearly two hour conversation between Patrick and Conner Habib. Its a wide-ranging conversation that takes us down many paths, including the call to christen Paganism and the wild nature spirits in our time, all while Conner and Patrick begin to uncover the meaning of the horrific elements woven into the mystery of Christmas and Christianity.*.Many of our listeners will already know Conner from when Patrick was interviewed on his podcast, Against Everyone with Conner Habib. Conner is truly a rare voice in our time, connecting with people in the arts, sciences, philosophy, politics, music, literature, and spirituality and sharing these deeper conversations built on honest thinking and compassionate listening. Conner has schooled himself in entering what is often uncomfortable, uncommon territory and finds true treasure there. One of those 'territories' is horror. A long time fan of horror fiction and film, Conner is also a published author, with his first full-length novel, Hawk Mountain, releasing in July of 2022. You can hear his own uninterrupted reflections on the value and power of art that includes the element of horror in this episode from his podcast. In our conversation, we turn our attention to the Christmas mystery and look to understand the presence of horror - of true darkness - at the birth of Christ. The festival of Christmas in its full form is not a one day event. It begins on the Holy Night of the 24th and lasts over twelve days, culminating in the festival of Epiphany on January 6th. Spiritually, there is a profound path taken from the shepherds, angels and peace of Luke's gospel on Christmas Day to the Kings, the star and Herod's massacre of children to protect his power and crown as described in Matthew's gospel. From the paradisiacal innocence of Christmas we are led into the depths of moral darkness, danger and threat to the child, the true king, who is born. All of these "icons" of Christ's nature foreshadow what we will all turn our attention to during Holy Week and Easter. The Christian story is told, without doubt, with profound elements of horror. But why? And why does the genre of horror itself seem to be growing in popularity in mass culture? What is it that is revealed in the art of horror that has a role to play in our human becoming? What is it in the reality of true evil in our time that has to do with the new appearance of Christ?A great and hearty thank you to Conner Habib for his willingness to explore these questions with us. New Year's and Epiphany blessing to you all!Support the show
Victoria Nelson saw it first: Popular culture teems with occult ideas, vestiges of bygone belief, fragments of ancient magic disguised as common entertainment. Her 2001 work The Secret Life of Puppets is in many ways the ur-text of weird studies, so prescient and probing it is even more relevant now than it was when it first appeared. In episode 128 (https://www.weirdstudies.com/128), Phil and JF discussed Nelson's wonderful first novel Neighbor George (2021). “We are witnessing the end of perspective and panoptic space…The medium is no longer identifiable as such, and the merging of the medium and the message (McLuhan) is the first great formula of this new age.” -Jean Baudrillard “The natural world is a spiritual house, where the pillars, that are alive, let slip at times some strangely garbled words” -Charles Baudelaire, Intimate Associations, 1856 "I have spent my life in clearing out of poetry every phrase written for the eye, and bringing all back to syntax that is for ear alone...'Write for the ear,' I thought, so that you may be instantly understood as when actor or folk singer stands before an audience." -WB Yeats, Essays and Introductions, 1961 "Time and Space died yesterday. We are already living in the absolute, since we have already created eternal, omnipresent speed." -Futurist Manifesto "There are two kinds of societies: those who animate objects, and those who turn people into objects.” -David Graeber “The sense of touch, as offering a kind of nervous system of organic unity in the work of art, has obsessed the minds of the artists since the time of Cezanne. For more than a century now artists have tried to meet the challenge of the electric age by investing the tactile sense with the role of a nervous system for unifying all the others. Paradoxically, this has been achieved by ‘abstract art', which offers a central nervous system for a work of art, rather than the conventional husk of the old pictorial image. More and more it has occurred to people that the sense of touch is necessary to integral existence.” -Marshall Mcluhan and Harley Parker, Through the Vanishing Point, 1968 Audio clips: The Mcluhan song I play a bit of is called "The Medium (O Meio)" from the great album "The Beginning, the Medium, the End and the Infinite" by IKOQWE (aka Batida and Ikonoklasta, two Angolan musicians): https://batida.bandcamp.com/album/the-beginning-the-medium-the-end-and-the-infinite David Graeber clip from an interview on the great podcast Against Everyone with Conner Habib, episode #99 (I def recommend): https://connerhabib.com/2020/02/11/conner-habib-david-graeber-talk-supernatural-politics-on-against-everyone-with-conner-habib-99/ Clip about Bonfire and Pauline Oliveros from the podcast Weird Studies episode #112 (I recommend checking it out, especially if you want more about mcluhan) https://www.weirdstudies.com/112 Michael Garfield short story titled "An Oral History of The End of 'Reality'" is episode #91 of the Future Fossils podcast (you guessed it, I also recommend - extremely cool podcast) https://www.patreon.com/posts/21616410 (Please let me know of any audio/editing mistakes, I didn't listen to this one all the way through) Sources: https://old.reddit.com/r/DilettanteryPodcast/comments/wxsmrg/131_the_four_dimensions_of_reality_and_the_two/?

Back at it again in podcast land, and this week we're invoking the Goddess Babalon with the wonderful Peter Grey and Alkistis Dimech, the co-conspirators behind the excellent occult publishing house Scarlet Imprint. This week we delve deep into the topic of Babalon with the pair, and examine: Who was Babalon, How did the Babalon working influence Pete and Alkistis' day to day life, What are Babalon's roots, and much much more. Reclaiming his chair from the usurper Marck, Ulysses Black returns to co-hosting duties. Main theme by Simon Smerdon (Mothboy) Music bed by chriszabriskie.com Peter Grey Biography: Peter Grey is a writer, and the co-founder of Scarlet Imprint. He is the author of The Red Goddess (2007), which has inspired the resurgence of interest in Babalon, the goddess of Revelation. His Apocalyptic Witchcraft (2013) has been called the most important modern book on witchcraft, placing it in the mythopoetic context of the sabbat and in a landscape suffering climate and ecological collapse. His Lucifer: Princeps (2015), is a study of the origins of the figure of Lucifer; he is currently writing the second part, Lucifer: Praxis. His collected writings, from 2008–2018, are published in The Brazen Vessel (2019) with those of Alkistis Dimech. His most recent work is The Two Antichrists (2021), a return to the Babalon and Antichrist workings of Jack Parsons and his eclipsed sodality The Witchcraft. He has spoken at private public events and conferences worldwide to both practitioners and academics. These have included Occulture, the Occult Conferences in Glastonbury and London, Treadwell's Bookshop, the Esoteric Book Conference in Seattle, Flambeau Noir in Portland, the Psychology, Art and the Occult conference in London, Here to Go II in Norway, the Trans-States conference in Northampton University, the Magic and Ecology conference for CRASSH at Cambridge University and Pagan Federation events. Peter lives with his lover Alkistis in the far south west of Cornwall on the edge of the Lizard peninsula, where he surfs in the cold Atlantic, walks the ancient land and pursues his magical practice. Alkistis Dimech Biography: With Peter Grey, I am the co-founder of Scarlet Imprint. I am a writer and artist – working principally with dance and the body. My practice is grounded in butô (dark dance). My work explores the occulted dimensions of the body, its subtle anatomy and sexuality as an archaeology of the flesh – drawing from the esoteric and phenomenological traditions – and seeks to unfold a process and techne of bodily spiritual transformation. I have performed in the UK, Europe and the United States, solo and in collaboration with musicians and artists, notably Z'EV, Gast Bouschet & Nadine Hilbert, and Anji Cheung – and spoken on my practice, and given workshops, at conferences and events in the UK, Europe and the United States. Selected works from 2008 to 2018 are documented in The Brazen Vessel and at alkistisdimech.com. I am currently creating Antimony, a work of texts and images on the angelic, alchemical transfiguration of the body.

Joy Williams' third novel, Breaking and Entering, is the story of lovers who break into strangers' homes and live their lives for a time before moving on. First published in 1988, it is a book impossible to describe, a work of singular vision and sensibilty that is as infectious in its weird effect as it is unforgettable for the quality of its prose. In this episode, the novelist, spiritual thinker, and acclaimed podcaster Conner Habib joins JF and Phil to explore how the novel's enchantments rest on the uniqueness of Williams' style, which is to say, her bold embrace of ways of seeing that are hers alone. Williams is an artist who refuses to work from within some predetermined philosophical or political idiom. As Habib tells your hosts, she goes her own way, and even the gods must follow. Conner Habib is a really interesting character and has had a wildly diverse career. He hosts a successful podcast called Against Everyone with Conner Habib and is a prolific writer having written for Vice, Slate the Irish Times. He’s a university lecturer and is currently studying for his PHD here in Ireland. And you may also be familiar with his name from adult performing. I met up with Conner a few weeks back and we chatted about, the cultural differences between the gay community in the States and Ireland going to school with Neo-nazis his unrequited love for a straight guy during high school coming out to his mother his other coming out as a pornstar to his family at Thanksgiving. and lots of other things. https://www.patreon.com/ConnerHabib Follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram @imcomingoutpod
The one and only Conner Habib returns for our traditional New Years discussion. Necromancy, witchcraft and whiteness, manufactured outrage, dialectical materialism and how to free yourself from the clutches of neoliberalism. Just what the time of year called for! Show Notes Conner on Patreon. Conner on Twitter. Lynn Margulis episode of Against Everyone.
There's been a recent spate of targeted violent attacks on sex workers across Ireland with the primary aim of theft. Charges have been brought against 3 men in Roscommon as part of Operation Quest. But surely our laws protect all workers from attack? Well, in 2017, legislation was introduced in Ireland to criminalise the purchase of sex. This was seen as a victory in some quarters for women's rights, and as a positive move to try and tackle the issues around women being trafficked. But many sex workers say that criminalising the purchase of sex drives sex work further underground and that the environment they work within becomes more dangerous. Conner Habib is a sex work's rights advocate, the host of the fantastic Against Everyone with Conner Habib, and author, lecturer, a Dubliner for the past year, and the only person (that we know of) who has won awards for writing, teaching, AND porn. With the recent decriminalisation of sex work in the Northern Territory in Australia by NT Attorney-General Natasha Fyles who said the new act was about keeping workers safe, we want to talk broadly today about sex work laws internationally, what philosophies underpin them, and what is best practice in terms of protecting the multiple rights that stem from sex work across the board.
Conner Habib is a writer, lecturer, sex workers' rights activist, and host of the countercultural podcast, Against Everyone with Conner Habib. Conner's writing has appeared in dozens of publications, including CR Fashion Book, Salon, Slate, Vice, and more. Conner served for two years as the Vice President of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, which strives to improve the laws surrounding and working conditions for adult performers, and to combat stigmatization of sex work. He is probably the only person who has won awards for writing, teaching, and porn. He is currently pursuing a Phd, studying the paranormal in Ireland, and finishing a novel and a book of short fiction.Conner’s Patreon: http://patreon.com/connerhabibBrought to you by Medicine Path Healing Arts1-to-1 yoga, plant medicine integration and transformative coaching with Brian Jameshttp://medicinepathhealingarts.comSupport the Podcast!1. Conversation with Conner Habib host of podcast Against Everyone with Conner Habib and public intellectual. We talk about the relationship of science, mysticism and sexuality.
Conner Habib is the host of Against Everyone w/ Conner Habib, a podcast about subjects that often fall outside the range of typical “left” discussions—things like radical philosophy, the occult, psychoanalysis, sexuality, porn, and much more. In this conversation, he explains how the concept of desire permeates our politics, present in everything from sex work and surveillance to academia and the military-industrial complex, and why healing the planet and healing ourselves are inextricably connected projects.
Sex is everywhere but have you tried looking for a candid conversation about it? Sex podcasts, like ours, are a good place to start. For this podcast all about podcasting we met the amazing hosts of Against Everyone, The Pornhub Podcast, Turn Me On, and The Second Circle to learn from the best about starting a podcast, how talking about sex impacts your own sex life and why real conversations matter. As well as the challenges of being married to your co-host, meeting double dick guy and breastfeeding kinks. Plus, we reveal our own experiences of what it's like to share all those intimate details in public. Talking about talking about sex...it's our most meta episode yet.
This week, we welcome back to the show my good friend, Conner Habib. Writer, sex worker, activist, Anthroposophist and host of Against Everyone with Conner Habib. And the topics under discussion are how desire destroys materialism and what a cosmic or fully haunted activism might look like. Show Notes Against Everyone with Conner Habib. AEWCH Episode exploring how desire destroys materialism. Conner on Twitter.
Today on the show we have my favorite thinker, the one and only Conner Habib! Conner knows how to live: he's a writer, he's appeared in over 100 porn films (he won awards for some of those!), and he's the host of my personal favorite podcast, Against Everyone with Conner Habib. He's had some awesome guests (check out the list here) and killer solo episodes. It's a show about having conversations, big ideas, sex, the occult, and philosophy. On this episode, we talk about the intersection of art and politics (and where they should diverge), our encounters with the police state, the limits of comedy, what you mean vs. what you do, sex in writing, Dennis Cooper, and how to speak your mind on Twitter. Conner Habib on Twitter: @ConnerHabib His Patreon! And once again, his podcast!
Conner Habib is back on the podcast, this time to talk about the Weinstein Effect, and whether people are still able to touch and connect in the same ways that they did before. Isaac and Charles argue over whether it's a sex issue or a power issue. Conner points out that workplace attraction and romance is impossible to avoid because Americans are stuck working all the time. Also covered: the working relationships between porn actors and why they are superior to regular working relationships and Conner's distaste for Jordan Peterson. The "Slate article" referenced multiple times is http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2017/12/where_is_the_line_between_office_flirtation_and_sexual_harassment.html. Conner is reachable on Twitter @ConnerHabib and his podcast "Against Everyone with Conner Habib" is available on all your favorite podcast platforms and the video version is on YouTube.
This week's guest is teacher, thinker, philosopher, podcaster, and gay porn star Conner Habib. Conner shares his background and talks about how he got into porn. Noted anti-porn crusader Isaac questions whether porn is bad for society and why it might be creating the much-discussed "Herbivore Men." Other topics: Trump (of course), why you feel weird after an orgasm, Freud's death drive, and what gay men like to watch, porn-wise. Also Charles embarrasses Isaac by reading from his emails. Follow Conner on Twitter (@ConnerHabib) and subscribe to his podcast "Against Everyone with Conner Habib" on your favorite podcasting platform. Part 1 of 2 episodes.
My guest this week is Conner Habib, and we set out to discuss exactly what consent means and why we need better language around sex and sexual assault. Conner is a lifelong sexworker and LGBTQ advocate, a porn performer, former boardmember of APAC, the adult performer advocacy group, a lecturer and a writer. Conner has some provocative views on consent and his interest in the occult and radical politics allows him to take less conventional approaches to analysis that always blow me away. He’s an all around thoughtful person. Conner has his own webseries, Against Everyone, that you can find on YouTube. You can follow him on Twitter @ConnerHabib. If you enjoy the podcast, or my Twitter feed or want to support the standup but can’t make it out to shows. If you’d like to help me fund a webseries that I’m trying to pull together, or you just want to help fund me finishing my novel, you can support the podcast and all my creative endeavors on my patreon, Patreon.com/SovereignSyre. Special shout out to Scott Masters, Owen Crabtree, and Christa Walker, long time, very generous supporters of the podcast. Thank you so much for your continued generosity.
Robbie Martin hosts solo with very special guest Conner Habib. Conner Habib is an author, lecturer, sex workers' rights activist, and host of the web series Against Everyone with Conner Habib. He has appeared in nearly 200 gay adult films, and served for two years as the Vice President of the Adult Performer Advocacy Committee, a non-profit dedicated to protecting the rights of porn performers. He gives lectures around the world on sex, sexuality, pornography, and the occult, and was the first gay adult performer to speak at MoMA in New York Please support Conner Habib on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ConnerHabib Please support Media Roots Radio on Patreon: www.patreon.com/mediarootsradio www.mediaroots.org www.twitter.com/AbbyMartin www.twitter.com/FluorescentGrey
Very happy to have Elle Nash on the show. Her novel, Animals Eat Each Other, will be out from Dzanc Books in 2018. She's the fiction editor over at Hobart Pulp, and the founding editor of Witch Craft Magazine. In this episode we talk about her pregnancy, life in Arkansas, her time as a follower of Islam, the necessity of spiritual practice, living your best life, corporate drone-ism, politicians, and Marilyn Manson. Enjoy!!! P.S. A few of the ideas I express in this one (particularly the stuff about the current failure of scientific materialism) is cribbed entirely from the work of Gordon White, who explains these things WAY better than I do on the recent episode of Against Everyone with Conner Habib. So check that out, after you listen to this one.
Join host Greg Carlwood of The Higherside Chats podcast as he talks sexuality, oppression, & the occult with guest, Conner Habib. When we're talking about the occult, psychedelics, or even sex itself – the long repeating pattern of history is “full scale suppression” and constant state sponsored reminders that any of these things capable of elevating a person beyond feelings of helpless servitude- will not be tolerated. Well throw off those chains people, and pry those minds wide open- because in a fairly diverse and wide reaching show today, we are looking deep into how Western attitudes about sexuality have served the masters, explore Anthorposophy, and examine some great thinkers and sex radicals of history. And there's nobody better suited to facilitate that journey than today's guest Conner Habib. Conner is an award winning writer, teacher, and gay porn star for good measure. Maybe the only man to receive prestigious honors in all three categories. Become a Plus Member at www.TheHighersideChatsPlus.com/subscribe to hear a second hour of all THC episodes.
