“Cuando” Adam Topol doesn't sit behind a kit the size of Alex Van Halen's or Chad Smith's, but he's equally as mighty. Topol is like Charlie Watts in the sense that he just kind of sits in the pocket and holds it all down. Like Watts, his style looks super laid back, but looks are deceptive because laid back appearance aside, big work is getting done. Topol is a subtle player who's inventive, tasteful and intuitive and he plays with a blend of finesse and muscle—he's one of the best drummers on the planet. Subtlety aside, the Lake Tahoe born Topol was reared on punk rock and his teenage years were spent listening to bands like Black Flag and the Adolescents. The young drummer pounded away on his kit to the loud stuff, but he was also equally smitten by the quieter stuff like the music of Cat Stevens. Educated at USC and the Berklee College of Music, Tool's formal education quickly gave way to knowledge that can only come from outside a university campus. In other words, real life. And in his real life, Topol soaked the world up. A fan of jazz and Afro Cuban percussion, Topol spent time in Cuba studying the discipline of drums. Although Topol might be best known as the longtime drummer for Jack Johnson, he's sat behind the kit for Alana Davis, Ziggy Marley, Eddie Vedder, David Gilmour and Jimmy Cliff. He's played in a band with Joey Santiago of the Pixies, been a part of the Culver City Dub Collective and put out great solo albums like 2019's Cuando, which showcased his talents as a singer-songwriter. Adam is a practitioner who plays with fine drawn precision, rhythmic smarts and musical intuition. He's a fabulous player and a very cool guy www.adamtopol.com www.adamtopol.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast

CARY MORIN has been described as "one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today.” With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty world-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock. He has performed at renowned venues across the globe, including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. LILLI LEWIS is a classically trained, award-winning singer/songwriter from New Orleans. Lewis is said to have "Sister Rosetta Tharpe's virtuoso commitment to her instrument and Odetta's vocal power, creating a show that is a force of nature.” Opening for Alana Davis, Dr. John, Kirk Joseph, Kermit Ruffins, Henry Butler and Jon Cleary to name a few, the social justice themes and human rights messages that filter into her lyrics, as well as her gospel-tinged vocals and instrumentation are a direct result from her upbringing spent listening to her father's sermons and southern choirs while learning the northern sensibilities of her civil rights activist mother. WoodSongs Kid: Ameera De Mel just turned 13 and has a powerful voice. She is from Lexington, Kentucky.

Nine-time Grammy nominee Ani DiFranco joins Scott and Paul to talk about her career as a fiercely independent singer-songwriter and activist, and share some insights into the social, political, and personal challenges that inspired her honest but hope-filled new studio album, Revolutionary Love. PART ONEPaul and Scott discuss the complicated legacy of genius songwriter/producer and convicted murderer Phil Spector, before paying tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in honor of the MLK holiday. They each choose a favorite song to emerge from the Civil Rights era and consider how King's message informs the artistic world today. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with the great Ani DiFrancoABOUT ANI DIFRANCOSinger, songwriter, musician, producer, poet, author, spoken-word artist, activist and entrepreneur Ani DiFranco has released more than 20 independent studio albums on her own label, Righteous Babe Records. Though often classified as “alternative folk,” DiFranco’s musical influences span a range of genres. After relentless touring, she reached a wide commercial audience in the late 1990s and early 2000s with albums such as Little Plastic Castle, Up Up Up Up Up Up, Revelling/Reckoning, Evolve, Educated Guess, and the gold-certified live album Living in Clip. The Grammy winner and nine-time nominee achieved her sole Top 40 hit as a songwriter when Alana Davis covered the DiFranco classic “32 Flavors” in 1997. The prolific and critically-acclaimed performer developed her own uniquely percussive guitar style and has collaborated with a range of artists, including Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, Bruce Cockburn, Pete Seeger, Utah Phillips, Maceo Parker, and Prince. In addition to releasing her own music, her label has issued recordings by Sara Lee, Andrew Bird, Nona Hendryx, and others. Ani was one of the first musicians to receive the Woman of Courage Award from the National Organization for Women, and was honored with both the Woody Guthrie Award and the Southern Center For Human Rights’ Human Rights Award. Her memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, was released in 2019 by Viking Books. The New Orleans-based DiFranco’s latest album, Revolutionary Love, is a timely social statement scheduled for release on January 29, 2021.

Moving the Fourth of July fireworks back to the Brooklyn Bridge for the first time since 2014 went off without any problems, although it did leave a few flames burning on the bridge after the fireworks were finished. It seemed to be the smoldering remains of the fireworks casings or leftover chemicals and not the infrastructure of the bridge itself. The FDNY fireboats stationed in the East River made quick work of the flames, holding back from using the full force of their water cannons so as not to damage the bridge. This was the 43rd annual Macy's fireworks display. In this episode, I speak with the clinical psychologist, Alana Davis, who talks about her work as a clinical psychologist and what the Division of Clinical Psychology, The DCP, in Scotland are up to. If you're listening to this using the Anchor.fm app, then I'd be delighted if you'd leave an audio message I can play in the next episode. I'd really love to hear your thoughts on what Alana has to say. And yes, I know there were bits where I sounded a bit like a psychology groupie… Sue me! Well, bugger me, that's been a bit of a challenging couple of weeks. For those who don't know me, I lose about a third of my life to dissociation where the world becomes unreal to me – where I lose most or all of my every day emotions – or I can experience the white-hot silent scream that fills all my senses. Where, after years of life with mental illness I know my only option is a darkened room with loud American cop shows with increased antipsychotics. It's hard not to feel the guilt and frustration that comes with my desire…hope that I'm going to be producing regular interesting, informative and entertaining podcasts, with great and varied guests (I've got loads of fine folk lined up for your future delectation) mental ill health, mental illness, mental malady, whatever you like to call it, is a pain in the arse… Anyway… Welcome to the Walk a Mile in My Shoes podcast - I'm your host, Chris young, and I'll be chatting with all kinds of folk, highlighting the experiences of people with mental health problems, many of whom feel on the edge of society, as I walk around the edge of the U.K. over the next couple of years. Following in the steps of a hero of mine, Satish Kumar, a Jain Monk who went on a peace march in the 1960's, I'll be taking no money with me. His guru felt, if he did, he'd lack the motivation to speak with people at the end of the day, and that the only people he'd meet would be hoteliers. I thought if this amazing man could walk from India into Pakistan - expect and receive wonderful hospitality when the two countries were at war - then I should expect nothing less from the people on this beautiful island of ours. So far, I've walked the 4 thousand or so miles anti-clockwise from Edinburgh to north wales and the people I've met, without exception, have been fabulous. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, I have a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder - a severe and enduring mental health problem - which, although it curtails me, doesn't define me. But this isn't a story about me - this is all about those fabulous people I'll be meeting as I go…well…during this time of inertia, I'm currently hunting down some of my social media heroes – people I've virtually bumped into over the years… That said, it doesn't have to be quite so selective…I'm inviting you to be part of the story - we're told we've become a more divided nation in recent years - I'm here to prove that wrong. Join me...I'd love to hear and share your story…help me on my journey, as we challenge mental health stigma, one conversation at a time. You know what summer means here in Chickentown. Yes, it's time for our seventh (!) annual robot-themed Top 4 1/2 List. And this year's subject is... GIANT ROBOTS. We have giant robots from 1960s cartoons, 1970s television, 1980s concert tours, and more. (A certain Iron Giant may even appear on the list more than once.) Of course the greatest giant robots are from Japan... and while we skip over many of the classic Japanese robots, we do include one of the weirder examples. Look, we love robots. And when the robots rise up and conquer the puny humans (probably in about three weeks), we hope they recall our annual tribute fondly. Especially the giant robots. Also: National Bowling Day, AT-AT walkers invading Boston, Alannah Myles vs. Alana Davis, and Kornflake's movie plans for the year 2032. We will all be giant robots by then, of course.
This week, I show you a beat using a sample of Alana Davis, which I first on a Jay-Z album back in the day. And I talk and talk and talk…
Caley was eating expired sushi at her day job. Surprise and strange fortune were met in the bitter flavor of translucent cucumber, that meal. The Lucy Cukes would later form, curling snugly around Caley’s songs, its name gently alluding to the memory of that fateful, off cucumber. What will become of them all? Caley Conway and her”Lucy Cukes”, the band she gathered from a group of childhood friends – Timothy Stone, Alex Heaton, and Robert Weiss — has, over the past few years, served her well, bolstering her already-strong singer-songwriter foundation. Conway’s voice evokes folk vocalists from both the past (Joni Mitchell) and more recent (Alana Davis), her range impressive and her verbose lyricism a breath of fresh air in a scene where chorus / verse / chorus is pretty standard. Conway has released a couple of EPs (Discipline Soup and Of Songs on the Ukulele) but has never gotten to a full-length. It’s unfortunate that the demise of the band also times out as their first release (Silk For Life will be released later this summer), but the bittersweet nature of things doesn’t take away from the music, itself; the first single (“The Dreaming Genius Sees”) is solid. Recently previewed by Milwaukee Record, they write, “Conway’s vocals remain magnificent and altogether charming throughout.”
