On Tuesday's show: NOAA (and the National Weather Service within it) is among federal agencies under scrutiny right now by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency. A documentary called Dear Ani tells his story and about Wasserman's eventual friendship with DiFranco. The film is part of this year's ReelAbilities Houston Film & Arts Festival. Then, we learn about a new opera adaption of West Side Story from Houston Grand Opera. And we meet the directors and members of Katy ISD's Tompkins High School Honor Orchestra, which is performing at this week's Texas Music Educators Association convention.

On Tuesday's show: As the Texas Legislature gavels back into session today, News 88.7's Natalie Weber tells us what legislation elected officials in Fort Bend County are hoping to get passed. Also this hour: Singer/songwriter Ani DiFranco made a name for herself doing things her own way -- launching her own music label, producing and mixing her own music, and championing messages and causes that weren't always popular or conventional when she was making a name for herself in the 1990s. So, it's fitting that a new documentary screening in Houston tonight is called 1-800-ON-HER-OWN. DiFranco talks about the documentary, her musical journey, and about not doing everything on her own anymore ahead of a concert at House of Blues on Friday. Then, we reflect on the life and career of one-time Lt. Gov. Bill Hobby, the namesake of the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs. We talk with authors Don Carleton and Erin Purdy about their biography, Bill Hobby: A Life in Journalism and Public Service. And here in Space City we know well that discovery comes not just from sending astronauts into space but by developing ever-more powerful telescopes. Case in point: images from the James Webb Space Telescope now offer us a look at some individual stars in a galaxy more than six billion light years from Earth. That's billion with a B! We learn more and revisit a 2022 conversation with one of the folks behind the Webb Telescope at NASA.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Ani DiFranco began recording and self-releasing her music as a 20 year old in Buffalo, New York in 1990. 34 years later she is widely considered to be a feminist icon. But in many ways she emerged iconic, fully formed and fearless.  A facile lyricist with a biting honesty, she played guitar with a virtuosic, rhythmic style. And she was ahead of her time as an independent artist who owned all her own masters and controlled most of the major aspects of her career. She's sometimes called the mother of the DIY movement. DiFranco has released all of her albums (over twenty) on her Righteous Babe record label.  The label has also put out projects for other distinguished singer songwriters including Andrew Bird, Utah Phillips, Arto Lindsay, and Anaïs Mitchell whose own Hadestown project was first released as an album on Righteous Babe before being transformed into the Broadway hit that it is today. Ani Difranco's most recent studio album Revolutionary Love came out in 2021. In 2022 she published a picture book for children called The Knowing which she described as “an Ani DiFranco-style lullaby, inviting young readers to ponder the distinction between outer forms of identity and the inner light of consciousness.” And she will join the cast of Hadestown on Broadway in February, playing the role of Persephone, a part she sang on Anais Mitchell's original Righteous Babe recording in 2010. So it's both her broadway debut and a fill circle moment.  In recent years Righteous Babe has released anniversary editions of Ani's early recordings. In 2022 she revisited the 1998 album Little Plastic Castle, sharing anecdotes and memories of the making of it on social media, and playing some of the songs live. Her memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, was published in 2019. Here she talks about how she sees her work today (“my job is connecting with people”), her early career (“it was relentless”), avoiding being labeled or boxed in (“I feel like a survivor of labels”), her idea of success (“successful artists are not necessarily the best selling”), raising children in an era of performative identity, practicing revolutionary love and why it's easier to tell the truth than to hide yourself. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios 0:00 Intro 12:00 Interview

Think you know renegade roots songwriter icon Ani DiFranco? Think again! We are happy to bring you this special rebroadcast as Ani celebrates the 25th anniversary reissues of legendary albums Living In Clip and Little Plastic Castles which we dive into in this talk. Ani is more than a songwriter and singer of course. Call her an activist, author, and free-spirited feminist folk leader - who recently released her lushly orchestrated twenty-second album: Revolutionary Love. Many things have been said about the music Ani DiFranco has created for the last thirty years since she burst on the scene with her fiery self-titled LP in 1990. With her shaved head on the cover, fearlessly bisexual love songs, dexterous guitar work and hold-no-prisoners lyrics sparing no one from her poetic magnifying glass, DiFranco's persona became almost synonymous with a rejuvenated women's movement that blossomed in the late-1990's Lilith Fair moment. And yet she was always a bit more committed to the cause than some of her more pop-leaning contemporaries, who faded away as soon as their hits subsided. Framing herself somewhere between the rebellious folk-singing teacher Pete Seeger and the gender-fluid show-stopping rock spirit in Prince, (who she recorded with after he became a fan,) DiFranco was always just as passionate about raising awareness for abortion rights, ensuring safety for gay and trans youth and bringing music to prisons, as she was promoting her latest musical experiment. She began playing publicly around age ten, and as a nineteen-year-old runaway from Buffalo, NY, she started her own label, Righteous Babe Records, that allowed her to operate free of corporate (and overwhelmingly male) oversight. Indeed, despite gaining a wide international fanbase she has released every album herself since the beginning — as well as championing genre-defying songwriters like Andrew Bird, Anaïs Mitchell, Utah Philips, and others. It was DiFranco's encouragement that helped Mitchell's opus Hadestown become a Tony-winning Broadway smash. DiFranco may have been deemed a bit too left-of-center for pop radio, but her beloved 1997 live record Living In Clip went gold. Let's get something out of the way real quick: was this male podcast host initially a bit intimidated to dive into her encyclopedic album collection after admiring her work from afar and believing the songs were not meant for his ears? Indeed. I grew up with girlfriends and fellow musicians who rocked Ani's Righteous Babe pins and patches on their jean jackets like they were religious ornaments. What I found during this mind-bending conversation, and after listening to her polished and mystical newest record especially, was that DiFranco has never tried to push away people that don't look or talk like her — or tried to mock or belittle conservative movements she doesn't agree with or understand. There is a deep kindness and empathy in her songwriting that I never expected and in her 2019 autobiography, No Walls And The Recurring Dream, she acknowledges how lonely and exhausting it can be trying to fight against a societal tide that doesn't want to stop and give you space to be who you are. What became increasingly clear during our conversation was that DiFranco wants to make music for everyone. She prides herself on her quirky, multi-generational fanbase — with grandparents and kids, dads and sons, daughters and aunties alike singing along to favorites like “Both Hands,” “Untouchable Face,” and covers like Woody Guthrie's “This Land Is Your Land” at packed shows across three continents.

The trailblazing musician performs songs from her transcendent new album Revolutionary Love, where she takes on the unrest and anxieties of the current social climate and transforms confusion and pain into clarity and perseverance with her poetic lyrical prowess, ever-commanding vocal work, and elaborate arrangements.

Stone Gossard and Ani DiFranco - "Disorders," a 2022 single on Loosegroove/Righteous Babe. With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard unearthed a six-year-old demo and teamed up with alt-folk icon Ani DiFranco for an anthem for abortion access. The music was composed by Gossard, along with Josh Evans, Skerik and Stanton Moore, with vocals and lyrics by DiFranco. All proceeds will be donated to the National Network of Abortion Funds, which aims "to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic, and reproductive justice." "...Women in every Republican stronghold in this country are left treading in a sea of unnecessary suffering, just trying to keep their heads above water," DiFranco declared. "Poor women will be drowned by the score. That is why this track is a fundraiser for abortion access — to help women who don't have resources but who desperately need abortions. I am so grateful for men like Stone, Skerik, Stanton — not just for the blessing of this track and the honor of being invited into it, but for actually seeing women in their full humanity and being willing to stand with them.” Read the full story at KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hey There EKPO Fans! We're continuing our focus on Women First with an encore presentation of this chat with Ani DiFranco. Enjoy!-------------------On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and folk singer Ani DiFranco, who's gained critical recognition in the neo-Americana folk world for unaffectedly blending her eclectic sound with socially and politically charged lyrics. She is also widely accredited for mothering the DIY movement in music. DiFranco started her own record label, Righteous Babe, when she was 19 and has since released 22 studio albums. In 2019 she put out a memoir, titled No Walls and the Recurring Dream, in which she details her life as a musician and activist. Last month Ani released a double single, “Do or Die” and “Contagious,” along with a music video for the former. The video promotes voting by dropping the viewer into an illustrious, quintessential display of the streets of New Orleans, to culminate with a social justice street-dance-party, ending in a silent tribute to justice by the Magnolia Bridge. The slick, Wurlitzer-decorated groove in combination with her versatile vocal dynamics provide a nifty instrumental section to compliment her message of unity and justice. Ani and Kraz talk through her recent projects, the journey to the digital age of music, and about her musical style choices and breakthroughs. Ani goes in depth on the influences that brought her to her current standing, and how she did it herself to become a matriarch for the DIY movement in music.
