Songwriter, singer and producer Sean McConnell excavates a cult classic of 80s singer-songwriter music as we discuss David Wilcox's 'How Did You Find Me Here'. Listen to Sean's new album SKIN wherever you listen to music.
Episode 316: Sean McConnell was born to do this. His parents were working songwriters who helped him get started as a teen in Atlanta. He landed a long-term song publishing deal while still in school at MTSU and earned cuts by Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Brett Young, and the TV show Nashville. Over 15 recordings - his latest is the lovely and agonizingly honest Skin - McConnell has become a beloved troubadour on the indie folk circuit and an honorary red dirt Texas poet through extensive touring there. Now he's grown as a producer working out of his unique studio in Nolensville. I made a trip down there to interview Sean in his cozy working habitat.
Hear us totally geek out while talking with Sean McConnell about the song in the room that wants to be born and how to find it. We talk about the difference between commerce and art, surrounding himself with the right environment for writing, and capturing lighting in a bottle. We discussed the slow patient process of making his new album, “Skin.” Available NOW! Sean McConnell has just one tattoo--his wife's name. It represents a commitment, a sign that's more than skin-deep. But on the cover of the Nashville singer-songwriter's new album "Skin," art and symbolism bloom like tattoo ink itself. An open palm beacons listeners, itself a symbol of his faith, while embers of Earth and nature, faith, and love serve as tangible and metaphorical guideposts along McConnell's renewed musical journey. The sisters are sooooooo excitedthat we got to talk to Bowen Young! We chatted with this divine duo about allthings music, like Brandon deciding to move to Nashville and “just give it awhirl,” and Clare's advice to “lean into the weird” because we're all uniqueand special. Nashville-based duo BOWEN * YOUNG embarks on a musical journey with their debut album, Us, a melodic tapestry woven by the harmonious souls of Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young. Produced by acclaimed Americana songwriter/producer Sean McConnell, their 10-track revelation is slated for a global release on May 3rd via Snakefarm/PIAS. Hailing from rural Australia, Clare, and Connecticut native Brandon infuse 'Us' with haunting, ethereal songs that delve into the depths of ferocious love, heartbreaking loss, and unwavering hope. Their musical collaboration, aptly named "Cinematic Americana," is a testament to the emotive songwriting, honest lyrics, and hypnotic harmonies that encapsulate their special bond. In the luminous shadow of their individual backgrounds, Clare, famed for her role as Scarlett O'Connor in 'Nashville,' and Brandon, a seasoned musician touring with legends like John Hiatt, share a common North Star—sweeping emotion, intimate moments, and bombastic sound. The couple's creative synergy found its missing piece in Sean McConnell. The revelation struck while composing 'Water To Wine,' a song that seamlessly captures the essence of their profound connection. Yet, life's shadows emerged in the form of 'Dangerous Love,' a single born from a harrowing experience when an assailant invaded their home. Undeterred, Clare and Brandon transformed adversity into art, choosing joy over fear. Entering the studio with McConnell and producer Roger Alan Nichols, they discovered the sweet spot of true emotion, using their crackling energy as the cornerstone. From the stripped-back 'Halo' to the unpolished honesty of 'To The Bone,' each track on 'Us' resonates with the authenticity of their musical journey. Clare's arrival in Music City in 2012 marked the beginning of a musical voyage with luminaries like Vince Gill and the Zac Brown Band. A pediatric cancer survivor, her life story adds a poignant layer to their narrative, emphasizing the resilience to embrace both light and dark. Brandon's journey, beginning in 2000, unfolds with nights spent filling composition books with melodies in Nashville. His collaborations with John Hiatt and contributions to projects such as 'Johnny Cash Forever Words' showcase the breadth of his musical prowess, heard in shows like 'Shameless'. Fate orchestrated their union in 2013, when Brandon became Clare's last-minute duet partner. Their unique chemistry blossomed into love, culminating in a magical proposal at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and a union officiated by John Carter Cash in 2017. The couple's musical saga continues to resonate globally such as sharing the stage with Billy Joel at BST/Hyde Park last year, a headlining US tour, and an astounding 838% growth on Spotify. The spotlight has embraced them, and the world eagerly awaits the May 3rd release of 'Us.' As the pages turn to 2024, the duo anticipates their return to the UK for the Highways Festival at The Royal Albert Hall on May 17th & 18th among other exciting opportunities. The symphony of BOWEN * YOUNG continues an enchanting tale of love, resilience, and a harmonious odyssey through the corridors of life and art. We had the pleasure of interviewing BOWEN * YOUNG LIVE from The Twisted Wool Lounge at the Historic Woolworth Theatre in Nashville! Most partners, in theory, will promise the world to keep each other safe and sound, but rarely is their vow necessary in everyday practice. However, when husband and wife duo BOWEN * YOUNG—singer/songwriters Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young—found themselves in the midst of a terrifying home invasion, the pair stared down the prospect of being separated, or worse, during a very real situation. Just two days later, without sleep and lacking creativity, BOWEN * YOUNG sat down with their friend and producer Sean McConnell and shared what they'd just been through. After several hours, the glimmer of an idea took hold of Bowen, just as McConnell picked up a guitar and said, “What if it goes a little something like this?” In less than an hour, the chilling story had been shaped into a song, and “Dangerous Love” was born. “Somewhere, deep in the conversation, Clare offered up an idea that was perfectly beautiful in the moment, revolving around the most harrowing part of the whole event,” remembers Young. “...The prospect of one of us being taken away from the other, just because one cruel individual decided it should be so.”The end result is a beautifully dark love song; an ode to just how far true-lovers are willing to go for each other. “Each time we play it is cathartic and healing,” says Young. “Each time we play it we love each other a little bit more. This event was just one part of our story, but it affected us deeply, and the trauma therapy we've done to recover has been one of the best gifts we could have given ourselves and each other. We can't undo what was done to us, but we can, through spreading awareness of how important it is to take care of your mental health, strive to turn that individual's cruelty into another person's healing.”More About BOWEN * YOUNG: Bowen Young's timeless debut record created by Clare Bowen and husband Brandon Robert Young is a multi-sensory feast. Matt O'Donnell is the touring Bass player for Sara Evans & the former Managing Editor of Bass Frontiers Magazine. Whether it's with a bass in his hand or his arms crossed in the control room, artists love having Matt O'Donnell giving them backup. “I really love the role of the bass player,” says O'Donnell. “There's something about fully embracing the link between the drums and the notes that's really rewarding. I try and take the mindset of helping be a kind of mortar into all the situations I find myself in.” It should come as no surprise that embracing the role has put Matt on stage with a wide range of respected artists and songwriters, including Sara Evans, Sean McConnell, Ruston Kelly, Josh Thompson, and Risa Binder. “One day I woke up and realized that my career has been marked by supporting people whose art is taken really seriously. The whole show is about the connection of their art to the listener. From the first note, I want my mindset to be about how I help build a stronger platform for them to launch from.” More recently, Matt has been working in the producer's chair to help artists present their songs in the most honest and intentional way possible. Originally from northeast Pennsylvania, Matt O'Donnell has been living and working as a musician in Nashville since early 2009. He's happy to mention in hushed tones having attended Boston's Berklee College of Music to prepare for a career in music. Matt also served as the Managing Editor of Bass Frontiers Magazine online from 2010 - 2015. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/musicrowhideout/support
Opportunities don't come from playing it safe or waiting until you become perfect and everything is right. Sometimes you have to trust it, do your absolute best, believe in yourself, bring the best work forward, and see what happens.Sometimes, the things that we think are perfect don't always turn out to be great. Sometimes, it's the gig, job, or song that you see as not ideal or unappealing that is going to push you to do the next level or the best work of your life.Great opportunities don't usually come dressed as you expect them to be, and no matter how appealing or unappealing an opportunity looks, you will never know where it can lead you until you say yes to it. Saying yes to an opportunity and giving it your best is where the magic happens. Judging opportunities and thinking of them as less than ideal is an excuse for not giving your best effort.Stop worrying about making everything perfect, and start giving your best to every opportunity. Any opportunity is great if you believe in yourself and give it the best shot.To thrive, you must be willing to take risks and be open to doing the best work you can. The worst thing you can do is shy away from a great opportunity because it doesn't seem like the perfect one. Just go for it and see what happens. You might end up having the most incredible time; if not, you will learn from it, and either way, it was worth the effort. In this episode, Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young, a husband-and-wife duo singing group, talk about how to build your career, set boundaries, and succeed as an artist and entrepreneur. “Empathy and compassion are big, and you have to hold on to them as an artist.”Snapshot of the Key Points from the Episode:[03:47] Clare and Brandon share how they became a great singing duo and, more importantly, husband and wife.[11:22] How to stop playing it safe and stepping out even when you feel it's not your ideal gig or perfect timing[15:30] What led Clare to be called for the nationals despite being shy, introverted, and coming from a small town in Australia and her experience? Raised on a farm in Lawrence, Kansas, Ashley Ray has established herself as one of Nashville's most nuanced voices, chasing down critical acclaim not only as a solo artist, but also as an in-demand songwriter for Little Big Town, Lori McKenna, Lady A's Charles Kelley, and others. Her unique approach to melody and storytelling has resulted in partnerships with publishing companies like SonyATV Tree and BMG Nashville. Meanwhile, her albums have earned her shows with Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, and other country trailblazers who, like Ashley, create a modern sound without chasing after modern trends. Ashley Ray shines a light on her midwestern roots with her third album Pauline, whose autobiographical songs tell true stories of love, loss, and life in Middle America. The album finds her teaming up once again with songwriter/producer Sean McConnell, with whom she co-wrote Little Big Town's GRAMMY-nominated Top 40 hit, "The Daughters." We had the pleasure of interviewing Hush Kids over Zoom video! Nashville -based duo Hush Kids return with a new EP Weatherman.Comprised of renowned artists Jill Andrews and Peter Groenwald, this is Hush Kids' first new release since their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2018. The lead single and title track "Weatherman" is out now and finds the duo reuniting with Grammy Award-winning producer Ian Fitchuk (Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Leon Bridges)."During the spring of 2020, when we were in lockdown, it rained, poured really, for days, maybe even weeks," stated Jill. "My husband Jerred has lived most of his adult life in dry arid places and he wasn't used to it. He would look outside almost every day, saddened by the dark sky and soggy earth. He would say, 'This place just never stops. It's like a rain forest.' I always like to put a silver lining on things so my response was usually something like, 'I guess that's why it's so green and beautiful here.' But the sunless days can take their toll on the best of us, and I could tell that he was feeling down as the rainy days and tumultuous weather wore on. She continued, "All of this was on my mind that day last spring when I got together with Ian and Peter to write for the next Hush Kids record. We sat on Ian's back porch and caught up for a long time, enjoying being in each other's presence so much because it had been a while since we'd last seen each other. This one came easily to us and I think we all cried a little when we were writing it. I'm so happy that we can share it with you guys today! I hope that your days are sunny even when the rain is pouring down.” "This was the first song I had written in person for maybe eight months," added Peter. "We were on a porch, it felt kind of weird, but we trusted each other. Jill said she had an idea, and I believe she sang what is now the first line of the song. I tend to have a look on my face when I think something is amazing, and it actually looks like I'm disgusted...food, art, music...it's more of a look of disbelief that something can be that good. That's how I looked when Jill shared this idea with us.” Hush Kids is a friendship with music. It began long before it had a name when two beloved Nashville artists with impressive solo careers were put together by their publishers to write songs for other people; in time, they discovered they had been writing for themselves all along. Their earliest sessions revealed more than chemistry, they revealed kindredness, an innate understanding that allowed two very different people to write some of the most deeply personal music of their careers. Incredible, instinctive vocal symmetry, captivating melodies, and intimate, intelligent lyrics speak to the years of tireless craftsmanship and well-earned successes by both artists respectively. Garnering praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Paste, Relix, and Folk Alley, among others, Hush Kids' 2018 debut journeys across the unexpected, the strangeness of love rather than the sweetness, the beauty of the world rather than the bullshit. Guided by writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ian Fitchuk, the record paired the effortless, addictive pop sensibility of The Carpenters with the dusty, atmospheric, desert landscape of Robert Plant and Allison'sKraus's Americana classic Raising Sand. Despite the name, Hush Kids is not about quiet, it's about stepping away from the wrong kind of noise to embrace the music. A gifted composer, producer, and musician, Peter has toured extensively and shared the stage with artists such as The Civil Wars, Andrew Belle, and Ruston Kelly. In 2020, he joined forces with Sean McConnell and Garrison Starr to release an EP as My Sister, My Brother. Never one to rest, Peter followed that up with an EP in early 2021 co-written and co-produced alongside production duo I WAS THE LIONtitledCome To Life. Jill, a founding member of the alt/countryfavoriteThe Everybodyfields, has performed alongside The Avett Brothers, The Secret Sisters, and DrewHolcomb & the Neighbors as well as secured television placements that includeGrey's Anatomy, This Is Us, and the theme song for SyFy'sbelovedWynona Earp. In2020, she released her critically acclaimed album and accompanying book Thirties, and followed that up with a dark EP of songs from her back catalog called Vultures. We want to hear from you! Our guest this hour is award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician, Sean McConnell. Sean is considered a top tier collaborator in the Nashville Country and Americana music scenes, and well beyond for that matter. His latest album, A Horrible Beautiful Dream, features thirteen songs marked by emotional depth, world-weary tones, and a tongue-in-cheek quality that most songwriters can only attempt to find, while McConnell has proven that he has it down pat. We had a great chat about his new album, how his life has changed since adopting his daughter Abi, who lives with cerebral palsy, as well as what it's like to maintain an authentic voice when writing songs for other artists. THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Welcome to episode #123 of The Troubadour. Ben Danaher is a Nashville songwriter with Texas Roots. Thanks to Carly and I’s mutual friend, Blake Chaffin, we were able to get Ben booked to be a guest on the show. As you’ll hear in the interview, even though Ben really cut his teeth as an artist and songwriter in Texas, he was drawn to Nashville to try his hand as a singer-songwriter in Music City where he lives and works out of today. Ben’s writing style is very much in my wheelhouse and if you like songs that can really hit you in the “feels”, Ben is your type of songwriter too. Below are a couple of YouTube videos of Ben performing some of his tunes that I totally dig so I have to share them: JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS LOVE ALREADY KNOWS Ben, spent a lot of his time prior to the pandemic touring as Aaron Lewis’ supporting act. In January Ben started recording and working on a new project with another past guest on the podcast, Sean McConnell. I’m super stoked to hear this record which is hopefully going to a fall release. We kick off the week with Episode 111 where I'm joined by singer-songwriter Ashley Ray. Ray is releasing Pauline, a tightknit 10-song collection of vignette-styled memories, warm introspection, and dynamic charmers about small-town life, nostalgia, memories, and family roots, on Friday, August 14. Much of Pauline's strengths stem from Ray's ability to draw from childhood memories and those deep family roots. Songs feel as though she's flipping through old photo albums. Ray points to family portraits and candids and begins painting the glowing world in which they lived in. At times, there's a haze that permeates the recollection, but it adds to the genuineness and emotional ties of the current day. During this interview, Ray and I discuss growing up in Kansas, moving to Nashville, the memory-filled songwriting of Pauline, and recording the album with friend and often collaborator, Sean McConnell. Dr. Mary Susan is a native Tennessean who has been having a helluva good time since her arrival at Baptist Hospital in the late Spring of ‘84. She is the host of the popular Mama Bear Podcast- a space she created for fellow women raising kids with special needs. She is married to singer/songwriter Sean McConnell and is the mother to their 8 year old Ghanaian beauty, The Magical Abiella. As a former middle school teacher, she has her Master's in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and her Doctorate in Special Education. In her spare time she likes to work in her pottery studio, stalk the Carter Family on Instagram, and dance like everybody's watching. Mary Susan’s mission in both her writing and her podcast is to help women around the world hear other people say the things they are already feeling. As the mom to a child with profound special needs, she knows the power of connecting with other people who get it. The world of special needs parenting can be both isolating and overwhelming. It is Mary Susan’s mission to help women feel seen, breathe deeper, acknowledge their innate badassery, and approach their lives with a sense of bravery, excitement, and perhaps a little bit of humor.

Today, he has a song on his new record written with Sean, an ongoing writing relationship with Dave, and a #1 chart-topper with Keith (among many other top hits with Kelsea Ballerini, Camila Cabello, and more). Seele Magazine Editor, Ally sat down with Americana singer/songwriters Sean McConnell and Garrison Starr on their European Tour, on their pitt stop in London last week. Sean has released 13 albums and written for artists like: Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, and Christina Aguilera. And Garrison Starr is a singer, songwriter and record producer based in Los Angeles, and known for her vibrant and impassioned live performances. In a wholesome conversation about music and the creative process of songwriting we got into some juicy topics about the differences between their American and European audiences, their inspiration, Garrisson's persecution in her faith journey, and what we can expect to see from them in 2020, which include their duo group, "My Sister, My Brother" hopefully touring sometime this year.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast
Today’s featured artist, Sean McConnell, is known as a well-respected consummate singer-songwriter throughout the Country, Red Dirt, Texas Country, Americana, and even Rock genres! I mean for crying out loud, the Rock Music Icon, Meatloaf, once listed Sean by name as a creative inspiration on one of his albums within the liner notes! Sean’s list of cuts by other artists is downright impressive! It includes names like Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Meat Loaf, Jake Owen, Brothers Osborne, Christina Aguilera, Buddy Miller and more…HOLY SMOKES!!!!! Sean has also collaborated and worked with a few of our Troubadour Podcast alumni including Wade Bowen & Randy Rogers. Sean’s picked up a guitar and started writing at the tender young age of 10; by his early teens, he was earning cash and doing this thing as a professional. Coming from a musical family you could say music was just in his blood. With that kind of origin story it’s easy to understand then, that by his early twenties, he was already turning heads with his songs with over a decade of songwriting experience already behind him. Even with all of the accolades that come with his songwriting prowess, Sean’s career as a recording artist is nothing to sneeze at either. His vocal ability is incredible. For example, just give this little performance of his tune “Lie Baby Lie” a listen. His latest solo effort, entitled “Secondhand Smoke”, is one of the best collections of songs I’ve heard in a long, long, long time… If you are into true introspective singer-songwriter records like I am, this album should be on your “have to consume” list. I’ll pull a quote from the bio on Sean’s website because of how nicely it sums the project up: “Secondhand Smoke is a stunning portrait of that Argus-eyed little boy, all grown up and grappling with what that entails.” Do yourself a favor and check out the video for the title track by clicking HERE. You all may also be familiar with one of Sean’s tunes co-written with country artist Brett Young, called “Mercy” that was certified double-platinum in March of last year. Well, let me end this blog by stating I may have found a new go-to singer-songwriter when my soul needs some soothing. Enjoy the episode… How YOU can support the podcast! Big props to Belmonts, Curb College of Music for hosting the honest conversation on where women are at in having a chance for equality in music. Recorded live at Columbia Studio A, Cassadee Pope (The Voice and recording artist), Tracy Gershon (artist manager and c0-founder of Change the Conversation), and Leslie Fram (Senior Vice President of Music Strategy for CMT and co-founder of Change the Conversation) all share their feelings on where we are as a community in accepting women as equals in business and in creativity. All three women brought their unique experiences and vocations into the conversation. We start with the purpose of Change the Conversation and the numbers behind the topic at hand. The double standards against women and has it always been like this? Then looking ahead is there a chance for women to not just survive but to truly thrive within music. Change the Conversation is dedicated to improving the environment for women in music. Their goal is to become obsolete and “to never have this conversation again." In an attempt to turn their frustration into action and help level the playing field, Leslie Fram, Tracy Gershon, and Beverly Keel formed Change the Conversation in late 2014. Cassadee Pope; singer, song-writer, and musician was the lead vocalist of the rock band Hey Monday then embarked on a season of The Voice and became the first female winner. Her debut solo country album, Frame by Frame, was a top 10 Billboard 200 record and it debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums, with 43,000 copies sold in its first week. Today she is releasing new music and working on new material. Recently, she's released "One More Red Light" and "Take You Home" that you can download on Spotify or Apple Music. Be sure to go to for tour dates, merch, and music and follow here @cassadeepope. Leslie Fram serves as Senior Vice President of Music Strategy and Talent for CMT, overseeing all music integration within the CMT brand, including original programs, CMT and music video airplay across all screens. Respected for both her hit intuition and hard-driving passion for music, Fram was the first woman to receive the TJ Martell Award in recognition of outstanding performance in the music industry in 2000 and was presented with the NARAS-Atlanta Chapter Heroes Award for her outstanding contributions to music and the music community. In 2009, she was honored as a Lifetime Achievement Inductee in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. She will also be one of the recipients of the very first ‘Innovation In Music’ Awards held June 6th in Nashville. Leslie currently serves on the Board of the Academy of Country Music, the Recording Academy/ Nashville Chapter, Board of Directors for The Sports Authority, the Nashville Film Festival Music Committee, and an alum of Leadership Music Class of 2014. Fram is an avid philanthropist and spokesperson, using her voice to support numerous non-profits and causes. Tracy Gershon is a noted music business professional with a wide-ranging career discovering, nurturing and developing influential talent as an A&R and music publishing executive as well as an artist manager. During her A&R career at Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, Gershon signed award-winning platinum-seller Miranda Lambert and help guide the careers of Blake Shelton, Randy Travis, Gretchen Wilson, The Wreckers, Faith Hill , Big & Rich and Lori McKenna. As a creative executive at both Sony Music Publishing and EMI Music, she helped to secure hundreds of cuts while working with writers like Harlan Howard, Gretchen Peters, Tom Douglas, Carlene Carter, and The Mavericks. As head of the Nashville office of Warner Music Publishing, she inked award-winning artist Kacey Musgraves. While at Sony Music she served for two years as an on-air judge and associate producer on the USA Network's "Nashville Star." Gershon recently helmed the A&R department at indie label Rounder Records, where she signed or worked with artists as diverse as Blackberry Smoke, Sean McConnell, and Jerry Douglas. Tracy, in association with Redlight Management, oversees the career of Country artist, Natalie Stovall. Gershon is also consulting the country division for Atlas Music publishing, as well as running One Riot Music. Gershon has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Nashville Business Journal's "Woman in Music City" in 2015, 2016 ,2017, and 2018 as well as Nashville Lifestyles Magazine's top ten "Women In Business" award in 2016.
Is doubt the end of faith in God? In part one, Maybe God followed host Eric Huffman's journey from the certainty of Bible Belt religion to the moment in college when he began to reject his Christian beliefs. More than a decade later, he found himself pastoring a church in Kansas City, and questioning everything about God and his faith. When Eric took a trip to get away from the life that had him feeling like a fraud, he never imagined coming home a new man, essentially unrecognizable to those who loved him. AmericanaFest 2017 is in the books, and it was large and loud. Fifty venues across Nashville. A new hotel headquarters. It felt the same yet different. We're 18 years into this thing after all. It's hard to discern trends from inside the belly of the beast. But in the hour ahead we'll try. Five artists or groups from different generations and places on the musical spectrum talk about career, art, commerce, inclusion and exclusion and the elusive but cherished idea that is Americana music. In case this is new terrain for you, AmericanaFest is the snappy short version of what's been formally called The Americana Music Festival and Conference, a Nashville gathering launched in 2000. What began as strategic ideas convention has grown into a major draw for music fans with about 300 artists playing some 50 formal and informal venues around town. The exponential growth of venues and audiences and private parties surrounding AmericanaFest is emblematic of the format's success in the wider world. Americana is a legit player at the top tiers of the music industry, whether indicated by Margo Price on Saturday Night Live or Sturgill Simpson going up against Beyonce at the Grammy Awards. It's good times. Can that get too good? Too big? Too much of what Americana was meant to be an alternative to? That concern is definitely in the air, and that will get touched on in the hour ahead. Featured, conversations with: Sean McConnell, Yola Carter, The Accidentals, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams and Rayna Gellert & Keiran Kane.
Our crew and a nice large crowd assembled for a progression from vintage sounding folk through contemporary songwriting and on to two flavors of the blues. I found this evening of live music revelatory for a few reasons. I'd never seen Walter Wolfman Washington before and he's quite something. The New Orleans icon supplements his solid and timeless blues guitar with layers of jazz sophistication. His band laid down grooves as syncopated nad funky as anything we've heard this year. He's our veteran playing in the night's final set. Up here opening the show in a moment is Nashville married couple Adrian and Meredith. They played Roots a couple of years ago when Adrian Krygowski was a solo artist. This duo now channels his punky fire through a more old world folk vein, with hard swing and gypsy overtones. Our second set was quite heart stopping. Rounder Recording artist Sean McConnell launched his music career in Atlanta and then moved to Music City where he found success as a Music Row songwriter. Like Lori McKenna, he's able to have cuts and hits recorded by others and pursue a very deep and meaningful career as an artist. He's solo acoustic but no less spellbinding. And we've got a set by a true local working class blues man - a gentleman who never thought he'd be a singing songwriting frontman. But his pursuit of the guitar led him in this direction and our music scene is better for it. he's Mark Robinson and he'll be up in the third segment.

After booking a one-way ticket to Chicago, he quickly settled in, calling the mid-west home until a brief move to Austin, TX in the fall of 2010. It was in Austin where he began writing and performing his own songs as part of the pop duo You Are An Airplane. By spring of 2011 they had enough material to play a few unofficial SXSW showcases and a tour through the south. Soon returning to Chicago, McConnell, deciding on more personal musings, assembled a rotating line-up of friends and local Chicago musicians, calling the project Cold Country, after a term his Minnesota-born father used to refer to the mid-west. Cold Country has since self-released three EP's, a full length, a handful of bedroom recorded tapes, and completed several DIY tours around the country. 2013's "Missing the Muse" garnered excellent reviews from local and regional blogs, as did 2015's "Fall EP." McConnell has just released a new single with a video, and has begun work on another full-length for 2017.
