Please join us in welcoming Jackiem Joyner to our studio to chat with Heart of Indie Radio Co-Host- Emme Lentino Bio: Contemporary saxophonist, author, and music producer Jackiem Joyner has set the bar high in his close to 20 years as a performer. With a number one jazz album, several Billboard chart-topping hits, and a series of critically acclaimed books to his name, he has shown himself to be the rare artist capable of transcending his instrument and reaching a mainstream audience. Now, as he begins the 18th year of his career during a time of unprecedented change in the entertainment industry, he remains as focused on his art as ever. “I don't care how hard things get, it'll never stop me from doing what I love. Playing the sax, writing music and stories, and performing live.” Jackiem was born in Norfolk, VA. At an early age, he began to show signs of the restless creativity that would later define his career. Despite his humble upbringing, he was able to get his hands on a saxophone as a child. The instrument quickly became his constant companion. After years of practice, he emerged in style with 2007's ‘Babysoul.' A masterclass in seductive smooth jazz, the album marked the arrival of a brilliant instrumentalist, and set the stage for a prolific recording career that would include Grammy runner ups, hit singles, and no shortage of critical adoration, right up through 2019's ‘Touch', and on to 2020's EP “Journey of Passion” As a performer, he has toured over 30 countries and performed with the likes of the late George Duke, Marcus Miller, Keiko Matsui, Donnie McClurkin, Angela Bofill, Najee, Kirk Whalum, Peter White, and many others. Eric Baines is a multi talented musician who cut his teeth in the fertile Denver music scene of the mid to late ‘90s. The time he spent with Chucky and The Cyclones, Tracy Edwards, Steve Crenshaw as well as his own group ,The Fringe, ultimately lead to him playing with Kyle in The Creighton Holley Band as well as Kyle Roberts Blues Revival. But Eric always had his sights set a bit higher than all that. After playing for a time with Nelson Rangell he relocated to L.A. in the early 2000’s and hit the ground running. His resume reads like a who’s who of noted jazz, pop, rock and country artists. Keiko Matsui, Baby face, Lee Ritenour, Lucas Grabeel, Greg Karukas, Hugh Masakela, Melissa Manchester and many many more. Currently Eric holds down the bass and back up vocals in Dwight Yoakam’s band. He also continues to write and produce his own music and has a podcast he’s kicking off of his own called The Dive Bar Rock Star Podcast. It was great to sit down and kick it with him talking about the old days in Denver and the wild ride he’s been on since leaving for L.A.

Keiko Matsui has garnered worldwide accolades as a masterful keyboardist and composer. Over the course of four decades, she has been at the top of the smooth jazz, jazz fusion and new age music charts. Keiko's music transcends cultures from around the world, providing unique untifying undertones. Award-winning program director, Ray White, spent time with Keiko in November of 2017 to talk about her latest project - Journey To The Heart, and the diversity of her musicians she recorded with on this album to produce a "world" sound. Our show's "hostess with the mostest," Lisa Davis, features Peabo Bryson in our showcase segment. This two-time Grammy award winner's latest album is Stand For Love.
Juxtaposing invigorating otherworldly sonicscapes under tender sax melodies, “Evolve” is a dynamic, highly-rhythmic session that is unpredictable laced with traces of the familiar. Listening will take you to a different place while defining Joyner as a musician and a writer beyond what we have already heard from the chart-topping rhythm and groove guy. The imaginative new set has a greater purpose with the introductory single, “Generation Next,” serving as “a declaration that the next generation of jazz musicians is here to stay. Music evolves, including jazz. All types of sound evolve. So do people and our imaginations. That is what I tried to put on tape. ‘Evolve' captures the changes in my musical mind and how I have evolved as an artist. Rather than fitting in with the traditional, I'm bringing the audience along with songs that unfold over different and interesting soundscapes even as I move towards a live organic sound,” explains Joyner. In addition to playing alto and soprano sax on the record, Joyner is a multi-instrumentalist who played many of the instruments heard on the collection along with a couple of high-profile assists from Grammy-nominated sax player Gerald Albright and internationally-renowned keyboardist Keiko Matsui. The collaborations are noteworthy for different reasons. When Joyner was in high school, Albright was his idol thus dueting with him on “Big Step” was a thrill. Joyner tours in Matsui's band when not performing his own dates and wrote “Europa” with her mind. On a few tracks, he was joined by his touring band – guitarist Kayta Matsuno, bassist Tim Bailey, keyboardist Bill Steinway and drummer Raymond Johnson – to record live in the studio.
