Our conversation goes beyond the research, giving into the realities of parenting, the power of secure attachment and how our own inner child shapes the way we raise our kids. This conversation reminded me that there is no one size fits all approach with parenting - it's a journey, not a test. You can also follow us on Instagram and Tiktok @greatcompanypodcast and if you've got thoughts, questions and comments, you can email us at greatcompany@jampotproductions.co.uk--And if you want to listen to more of Dr. Aliza you can find her podcast Raising Good Humans here: https://open.spotify.com/show/2NCujIiYYaZ3vI1ZE9VBts?si=36e97be6841e4bd7--THE CREDITSExec Producer: Jemima RathboneAssistant Producer: Gurlina HeerEditor: Dan KingVideo: Jake Ji & Ryley KirbySocial Media: Laura CoughlanGreat Company is an original podcast from JamPot Hosted on Acast. I'm back with another solo episode and I'm giving you a recap of what I discussed in my latest workshop, Parenting on the Same Page. Many people struggle with conflict between their partners inside their homes on a day-to-day basis regarding parenting decisions. While they love and respect each other at the core, the heightened moments of emotion and stress can cause friction between two parents. I'm going to share with you the three tools you can implement today to help get back to parenting as a team. All Feelings are Welcome. All Behaviors are NotWhat is the emotion or feeling your child is experiencing? What is the behavior you don't want to see? What is the behavior you do want to see?As you are calm and steady as the parent, you set clear boundaries for behavioral expectations. You need a game plan to address these situations and avoid reacting in an escalated way toward your child and each other. How can you validate the feeling your child is experiencing while still holding your boundary? How can you lean on each other in these stressful moments to help each other out? When you parent consistently on the same team, you will see a reduction of your child's challenging behaviors.Be Reflective of the Language You Use with Each OtherConnect, don't correct.Connective language is focused on yourself, your emotions, and your feelings, and finding a way to connect on a similar level with your partner.Have these discussions in moments of calm so you can both approach the conversation from a regulated place.A Dysregulated Adult Cannot Help a Dysregulated ChildIf your immediate reaction is to become dysregulated when your child behaves a certain way, it will not help the situation. You need to work through what the triggers are that cause you to feel dysregulated in stressful moments. Using breathing and physical redirection can help you to calm down and pause. Use PARR to become a more responsive parent.Resources: - I have three one-on-one coaching spots left for 2024! I can't tell you how many parenting books I've read, but I can tell you that sometimes when I finish reading a parenting book, I feel a sense of loss or stress or as if I'm somehow behind and need to backtrack to get things going in the right direction. So when I come across a book that feels supportive and accessible, I'm always happy to share it with you. And that is definitely the case with The 5 Principles of Parenting: Your Essential Guide to Raising Good Humans, the new book by friend of the pod Dr. Aliza Pressman. I think what I love so much about Aliza's work is that she compassionately reminds us that there's no one “right” way to raise good humans. Instead, in her book she helps parents charge a manageable course for raising good humans that's in alignment with our own values and our children's unique temperaments. The five principles outlined in her book that she walks through with us in this conversation – Relationship, Reflection, Regulation, Rules, and Repair – can be used to get things right often enough, because there's not getting a perfect score in parenting. Lots of great reminders in this conversation, and the one I appreciated the most is that even though what it takes to raise good humans may sound simple, that doesn't mean that it's easy, or that it's not going to feel messy. In fact, it's most definitely going to feel messy, and that's okay!   About Dr. Aliza Pressman Dr. Aliza Pressman is a developmental psychologist with nearly two decades of experience working with families and the health care providers who care for them. Aliza is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Pediatrics in the Division of Behavioral and Developmental Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital where she is cofounding director of The Mount Sinai Parenting Center. Aliza is also the host of the award-winning podcast, Raising Good Humans. She holds a BA from Dartmouth College, an MA in Risk, Resilience, and Prevention from the Department of Human Development at Teacher's College and her PhD in developmental psychology from Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Aliza also holds a teaching certificate in mindfulness and meditation from The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California at Berkeley. Aliza is the mother of two teenagers.   Things you'll learn from this episode The definition of a 'good human' is subjective and varies from family to family The five principles of parenting are relationship, reflection, regulation, rules, and repair Resilience is an important aspect of parenting, especially for neurodivergent children The principles can be applied to various parenting situations, including sibling conflicts Parenting is supposed to be messy — there is no one-size-fits-all approach   Resources mentioned for the 5 Principles of Parenting Aliza Pressman's website The 5 Principles of Parenting: Your Essential Guide to Raising Good Humans by Dr. Aliza Pressman Aliza's Raising Good Humans Podcast Aliza on Instagram Mount Sinai Parenting Center SeedingsGroup W. “I think that with regulation, the funny thing is that it's either I want to control the weather around my children, or I want to control my children, but regulation is very much a self thing for adults and a co regulation thing between you and other, especially you and a young person whose brain isn't fully able to self regulate. But if you're so focused on controlling all these outside things that you can't, like the weather, then you get to let yourself off the hook of getting into the much harder, but more possible work of self regulation and of figuring out your own stuff. And all of that has much bigger benefits to your kids, of course, than making the weather perfect around them, but it just is harder. Even though it shouldn't be so easy to change the weather, but it does appear that is what happens, right?”  So says Aliza Pressman, development psychologist and Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Behavioral Health Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital where she is co-founding director of The Mount Sinai Parenting Center. Aliza is also the host of the hit podcast, Raising Good Humans, and the author of The Five Principles of Parenting: Your Essential Guide to Raising Good Humans. I love Aliza for many reasons: Yes, we all want friends who are developmental psychologists on speed-dial, but she's also different in the way she delivers advice. For one, she cuts right to the point, reminding and reaffirming that while yes, every family has its own complicating factors, the basic tenets of raising good humans are simple. You don't need your own PhD in parenting to do the job, nor do you need a PhD to re-parent yourself, you need to focus on the elements she outlines in The Five Principles of Parenting: Your Essential Guide to Raising Good Humans: Relationship, Reflection, Regulation, Rules, and Repair. As she explains, through practice and normalizing imperfection, along the way you'll discover the person you're ultimately raising is yourself. By becoming more intentional people, we become better parents. By becoming better parents, we become better people. In today's conversation, we touch on these tenets while also exploring the particular social world we find ourselves in, one in which there seems to be an expectation that we can and should control the weather for our kids.  MORE FROM ALIZA PRESSMAN, PhD: The Five Principles of Parenting: Your Essential Guide to Raising Good Humans Raising Good Humans Podcast Aliza's Website Follow Aliza on Instagram Aliza's Newsletter To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. “We don't allow ourselves to just kind of let our shoulders go down and trust that we are enough and we're exactly what our kids need and that it's not as complicated as it's made out to be,” says Aliza Pressman, author of The 5 Principles of Parenting and host of the Raising Good Humans podcast. Today we're talking about identity, divorce, shame, imperfection and the gift of blowing it with psychologist Dr. Aliza Pressman who is a mother of 2, a clinical and academic wiz, and host of the widely praised parenting podcast Raising Good Humans. In this conversation, Dr. Aliza Pressman discusses how the parenting advice industry has turned into gobbledygook and why she felt it important to write her book, 'The Five Principles of Parenting,' which teaches parents a manageable framework for raising children: relationships, reflection, regulation, rules, and repair. Aliza reflects on her “big time adulting moment:” letting go of shame and judgment after her divorce. Aliza and Caitlin also discuss navigating unexpected challenges in life, the loss of the life they envisioned, and the need to reconcile their own desires with the responsibilities of parenting. The main takeaway is that we are all flawed humans. We make mistakes. Shit happens we don't expect. Not everything is in our control. But we do have the power to normalize imperfections, practice self-compassion, and repair our relationships when we mess up.  Aliza reminds us that when we let go of perfect, we can become positive and transformative influences in a children's lives.
