Today we're speaking with the authors of the book Fighting for Family: The Relentless Pursuit of Building Belonging. Chris and Julie Bennett moved their family of 4 children from their secure position as leaders of a church in Oklahoma to what they considered the most disconnected city in America—Los Angeles—to begin a ministry of establishing strong families. They're here to talk about this rollercoaster ride and how God was at work doing what he does best—turning chaos into an inspiring story of hope and purpose.Get your copy of Fighting for Family here.

Continuing our series on first jobs out of law school, we connect with four public defenders. Two members from the Class of 2011 are with the Oakland Public Defender (Joe Goldstein-Breyer & Stephanie Clark); Armilla Staley Ngomo '08 works at the Federal Defenders in San Diego, and Ricardo Garcia '95 runs the largest public defender office in America (Los Angeles). The four alums discuss the job's strains and rewards, misperceptions about the profession, and why they love what they do. Bear With Me is a project of the Berkeley Law Alumni Association.
It's 11/13/97 and the nation has put their darkest hour (Cobain/Princess Dianna/Oingo Boingo's farewell show at Universal Amphitheater) behind them. Apple Home Computer stock rockets to $3.56 a share (El Farto says sell), Beavis and Butthead is ending, Jimmy Kimmel is committing career suicide by leaving FM for TV, and Machine Bolt Kennedy is strong enough to be El Farto's man. Segments include News, This Day in Music History, This Week's Remote, and more! Perfect!
As you already know I'm starting this series of interviews to document what is going on with this pandemic. We are featuring an array of people from different places in the world, so we get an even picture of what is happening. Today's guest is Paul Lefko, another good friend of mine from the West coast of America - Los Angeles. Paul was one of the few that used Instagram as a platform in a good way and we became mates through. So much so not only has Paul appeared on the podcast on episode 21, back in 2018, but also co-hosted a few shows with me! We have been mates for a while now and finally got to meet up last year while he had a layover in the UK. Paul is not only a great photographer, who shoots models and aspiring musicians around Hollywood but also a great travel photographer too. However, that is not his full story, Paul is also a full-time therapist and a father of two. So listen to this show as we talk about: schools + Chromebooks future of teaching unemployed a cleaner earth ventilators, ICU & staying at home hospital costs + health insurance E.R. staff laid off Paul's work + telephone medication working remotely Photography Paul also briefly talks about finding a Fuji x100 in his gear and compares this to a Leica CL he's just playing with. Since his travels to Africa last year, he's been invited back to help with future workshops too, so exciting times to come! Covid 16 million unemployed in the USA 502,000 cases, 18700 deaths (at 10 April 2020) Links I mention Ethan Moses from Camera Dactyl - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4W5zJWLM84 Paul's website - https://www.fhutowurks.com/ Paul's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/paul_lefko/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/photography-insights/message

Darryl Yong (@dyong) is a mathematics professor at Harvey Mudd College (and former classmate of ours, also at HMC). He is working with HMC’s Clinic Program, putting real industry projects in front of teams of college students. He’s also teaching number theory to prison inmates and helping teachers in the chronically underfunded Los Angeles Unified School District. Darryl writes about his career in education at Adventures in Teaching (profteacher.com). You can read about his experiences with the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program. If you dig into the archives a bit (2009) you can read about teaching at a high school, for example adapting teaching to different students. What he took away led him to create Math for America Los Angeles, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of secondary school mathematics and computer science teacher leaders in the greater Los Angeles Area. Darryl’s personal page (darrylyong.com) and his HMC page (math.hmc.edu/~dyong). Also, check out HMC’s Clinic Program page.
This week: Tom Papa celebrates the Los Angeles food scene with a stop at Tony’s Mexican Grill and meets a mechanic named Fernando and an Uber driver named Donna, along with a few mythical L.A. characters (originally from February 2, 2019). Find Tom’s tour dates at tompapa.com.

On this episode of I'm An American Too, I interview Ming Wang, an engineer originally from Taiwan. She tells me of her experience coming to America (Los Angeles) in 1995 at the age of 15 - just as the OJ verdict was handed down; her experiences in Ohio and what she thinks of American life. As always, let me know what your comments are and if you enjoy the podcast, subscribe and enjoy.
I first met Tamika Butler when she was the director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. Brilliant, funny, and not prone to pulling punches, she is simultaneously personally magnetic and politically unapologetic, holding those of us who have a hand in shaping the built environment to account. Now serving as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, she brings the lens of a civil rights attorney to her work, helping to reveal and correct the inherent built environment inequities for people of color, people who are poor, and/or who may be experiencing homelessness. Given her diverse background, I wanted to hear Tamika’s perspectives on how homelessness intersects with transportation and open space in the City with the highest unsheltered population in America: Los Angeles. Her insights did not disappoint, and I hope that you will enjoy this conversation with Tamika. One of her previous speeches, the keynote address at Transportation Alternatives' Vision Zero Cities conference in 2017, is referenced in the recording. You can watch it here.
