A story about veterans, a ruthless drug lord, a girl in trouble, and kicking ass the American way. Listen in as me and returning guest Dan put on some ponchos and wade through this splatterfest of violence. Directed by Joe Begos (Almost Human, The Mind's Eye, Bliss) and written by first-time screenwriters Max Brallier and Matthew McArdle, the A.V. Club called the film "a visceral throwback to the gritty action fare that lined video store shelves in the early '80s," and Slashfilm said "it's vile, slick with repugnance, and appropriately inhumane." This film is FUCKING AWESOME. It tells the story of VFW bartender Fred, played by Stephen Lang (Don't Breathe, Avatar), and his fellow veteran friends played by William Sadler (The Shawshank Redemption, The Mist), Fred Williamson (MASH, From Duck Till Dawn), Martin Kove (Karate Kid), and David Patrick Kelly (The Warriors, The Crow), as they fight to protect Lizard, a young woman on the run from a ruthless drug lord and his army of mindless tweakers. It's simple, violent, and absolutely fun. Just watch it! The film is currently available on Prime Video, AMC+, Blu-ray and DVD. Watch Dan play video games here: www.twitch.tv/JustonethingDM

This week, the ladies are full of ALL the theories about the children's mega-hit, Gabby's Dollhouse. . What is Gabby's REAL story? Where exactly is she? Who's in charge? And most importantly - are your kids safe watching this show? Our ThoughtsThe show reminds Laura and Kara of Blue's Clues in that the characters interact with the audience by asking questions and through meaningful pauses. Gabby's solitary living situation reminds Kara and Laura of the disturbing late 80's drama Flowers in the Attic where a family of young children are locked in an attic for a stretch. Kara may have read this book when she was in middle school and Laura definitely read the Dollanganger Children series. We also have a feline problem. Cats won't paint your nails, clothe you or bake you cupcakes. Mamas, don't let your kids dress your cats or they're gonna get scratched. Laura can't help but feel as if she's sitting through a toy commercial during each episode. Having recently watched The Orange Years, about Nickelodeon choosing its programs to sell toys to kids in the early 90s, Laura senses a setup. Should they watch it?Kara: YesLaura: NoWe still think you should watch Ada Twist, Scientist instead. Side ConversationsIf Laura had a dollhouse, it would be made of cheese. One room for fondue, a holey one for swiss, brie, queso, and a fancy charcuterie room. There would even be a cheesy bellboy to take your bags at the door. Kara took her son and a friend to a meet and greet with Last Kids on Earth author Max Brallier. She recaps the time that she and her mother met comedy legend Carrot Top. Laura met acting great Ron Perlman while he was wrapping up Sons of Anarchy and made him smile with a couple jokes. If you enjoyed this podcast, please be sure to subscribe and leave a review on your favorite platform. Season 3 of the Emmy-winning series The Last Kids on Earth, with action-packed animation from Atomic Cartoons, is now streaming on Netflix. It hails from bestselling author Max Brallier and showrunner Scott Peterson, and continues the adventures of Jack & Co. as the kids attempt to survive a monstrous post-apocalypse. The new season adapts Brallier's Book #3, "The Nightmare King," and uses clever storytelling techniques to explore the dreamscape nestled inside the kids' minds as the narrative unfolds. It's definitely worth a watch so put it on your list now at the very least! With the arrival of the new season of Last Kids, I had a chance to chat with star Nick Wolfhard about the events of "The Nightmare King" and where Jack's head is at this season. Jack and the kids will have to face terrors both real and imagined, but they'll also have to deal with internal conflicts within their friend group. It's not all doom and gloom though! Above all else, The Last Kids on Earth is a super-fun ride into the post-apocalypse. Read on below for Wolfhard's insight into just how fun it was to make! Some light spoilers follow:

Enjoy our presentation of The Last Kids on Earth by Max Brallier and published by Viking Books for Young Readers.  Ever since the monster apocalypse hit town, average thirteen year old Jack Sullivan has been living in his tree house, which he's armed to the teeth with catapults and a moat, not to mention video games and an endless supply of Oreos and Mountain Dew scavenged from abandoned stores. But Jack alone is no match for the hordes of Zombies and Winged Wretches and Vine Thingies, and especially not for the eerily intelligent monster known only as Blarg. Jack sets out to build a team, defeat the Blarg and achieve the ultimate Feat of Apocalyptic Success. The Last Kids on Earth is a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Series and has been adapted into a Netflix Original Series. The Last Kids on Earth is recommended for ages 8 and up. Long live and fun!

Screens are everywhere these days! We’re taking a look at why smartphones are so addictive, and how our devices affect us. Our co-hosts took on a bold challenge for this episode: they went a week without phones or tablets. We’ll hear how their experiment went, then Sanden will fill us in on the brain chemical that trains us to love our screens. We'll also learn why the predictability of messages and alerts on smartphones makes them extra hard to put down. Plus, we’ll get a few tips from Catherine Price, the author of How to Break Up With Your Phone. Price has more resources for screen time habits at https://phonebreakup.com/. And! A new moment of Um: why are bruises blue, and how do we get them?
