Tune in as we broadcast live from Hewlett Park, Grand Prairie, Texas, for the Lone Star Street Rod Association's 49th annual state run! Despite a few technical hiccups, we had the pleasure of chatting with Carroll Estes, the proud owner of the Roadside America Museum in Hillsboro. Carroll dives deep into the storied past of his beautifully restored 1968 Chevrolet C10 truck, complete with a 5.3 LS engine and vintage air. With decades of experience in car restoration, Carroll shares the unbridled joy of driving his meticulously restored vehicles, rather than simply trailering them. From reminiscing about the Hot Rod Tour's recent stops in Fredericksburg and Hillsboro to discussing the changing landscape of classic car culture in small-town America, this episode is a treasure trove for all car enthusiasts. We tackle some of the biggest bad car habits that can make drivers look foolish, such as blinding headlights and thunderous exhaust systems, and emphasize the importance of common sense and respect on the road. Plus, enjoy our humorous takes on fashion faux pas at car shows and ponder the generational shift towards modern vehicles. #168, Hershey’s world class auto museum reopens

THE WEEKLY DRIVER

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2021 29:01

Its official name is the Antique Automobile Club of America Museum, but it's almost always called the AACA Museum or the Hershey Auto Museum. By any name, the museum in Pennsylvania is among the country's most active facilities honoring the history of automobiles — and it's reopened. Jeffrey Bliemeister, the museum's Executive Director, is our guest on this week's episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. The AACA Museum, among the country's most prominent auto museums, has reopened. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Bliemeister the status of auto museums around the country during the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, we talk about the AACA Museum and its approach to presenting the ever-fascinating world of vintage vehicles. The museum's vast digital experiences — tours,  ride-alongs and collection chronicles — are all highlighted on the AACM website and YouTube channel. In-person visits began again on January 4. (A storm in the area temporarily stopped in-person visits again, but the museum has re-opened.) One compelling vehicle on display is a 1933 LaSalle. The artwork on wheels, sometimes known as the Cadillac Companion, was manufactured from 1927-1940. It was slotted between the Buick and Cadillac lineups, and like Cadillac, was named the Frenchmen who explored America in the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum's LaSalle is a two-door convertible coupe with a rumble seat. It has most of the features of the Cadillac line, including the 115 horsepower V8 engine. The trim and detail distinctions and an approximate $500 price difference set the two lines apart. Restored in the late 1970s, the car was shown then placed in long-term storage. It was donated to the Museum in 2017 by Walter Van Nuys of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. A new exhibit showcases the world of "Hemis." As the website explains: "Most people associate the word “Hemi” with Mopar/Chrysler vehicles; however, there are many more vehicles that have a “Hemi” engine that might surprise you! "The term “Hemi” refers to hemispherical combustion chambers – learn more about these robust engines and the vehicles they power." The auto museum in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is often referred to as the AACA Museum or the Hershey Auto Museum. One of its current exhibits showcases "Hemis." Please join us for a lively discussion about all things auto museums. The AACA Museum, Inc., is located at 161 Museum Drive, Hershey, Pa. Tel. (717) 566-7100. Visit its website: AACA Museum. Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman

Today's Guest: Jon Bon Jovi, singer, Bon Jovi   Bon Jovi, featuring Jon Bon Jovi, center Today--March 2--is singer Jon Bon Jovi's birthday. I've been intent on publishing my January 19, 1984, phone interview with him for a long, long time, but I just cannot locate the original print version of the story to accompany it, so today I am throwing up my hands and we'll just go with the audio. At the time of this interview, Bon Jovi was a hard-working, fast-rising Jersey Shore band that made itself media accessible and media friendly. The guys frequently played baseball against local radio station DJs as they toured the country, generating good feelings and lots of extra spins of their debut record. JON BON JOVI podcast excerpt: "My mom is a florist; my dad is a hairdresser. They always said, 'Do whatever makes you happy.' They knew I wanted this; there was a lot of of support." I remember being struck by how nice Jon was in this interview and how surprised I was to discover his hometown was Sayreville, NJ. I grew up a short drive away in North Brunswick. He asked if I know any Bongiovis in North Brunswick--particularly Joe and Nanette. He also mentioned time spent at the then Boy Scouts of America Museum in my hometown. One other note about this interview: for years I carried around boxes and boxes of rock star interviews I conducted in the mid-1980s. Many, recorded on high-end brand name cassette tape, failed to hold up to the ravages of time and Florida weather. The ones recorded on cheap tape--Hello, Realistic!--seemed to do better. No one knew then there would one day be an Internet were all such things would have a second life. JON BON JOVI podcast excerpt: "Ron Diaz at (Tampa Bay radio station) YNF was the biggest supporter before I ever had a record deal." Anyway, two friends inspired me to recover this and dozens of other lost interviews. First was my friend Dean Hendrix, himself a musician. Second--particularly for  this Jon Bon Jovi interview--was my neighbor, Lori Crotts. One day, I was visiting with Lori about some school matter and I saw some Bon Jovi memorabilia on her desk, including a photo of her and Jon, I believe. Turns out, she became a late fan of the band and had been catching up, attending as many of their concerts as possible, meeting the boys in the band backstage several times. This happily married, mother of three, and beloved pillar of the community, worked hard and, as her reward, treated herself to Bon Jovi concerts whenever possible. I told Lori about this interview and offered to find it for her. I took too long, as it turned out. Unfortunately, soon thereafter, Lori was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and never got to hear this restored conversation. She died on January  31, 2013. (Read more about Lori here.) That's why, I'm dedicating this to a fine woman and the biggest Bon Jovi fan I've ever known.
