Today's guest is Infinite Athlete founder Charlie Ebersol. Infinite Athlete has been a sports business story since the brand suddenly appeared on Chelsea's shirt at the start of last season. It's a story with a lot of baggage: Ebersol is former boyfriend of Maria Sharapova and Britney Spears, and son of actress Susan St James and Dick Ebersol, the legendary NBC Sport chairman. IA is backed by Andreesen Horowitz, Silver Lake, Endeavour and Todd Boehly, the Chelsea co-owner. Insert the boring but important phrase ‘Associated Party Transactions'. All parties were asked by the Premier League about potential conflicts of interest and whether the sponsorship value of the shirt exceeded fair market value, which is a slippery concept in and of itself. The final sentence of this paragraph is: ‘The Premier League approved the deal after thorough scrutiny'.That story, or a version of it, is how many people talk about Infinite Athlete. Charlie Ebersol's responses to this narrative are really interesting, and I'll leave you to have a listen and judge for yourself. We then get to the other question, which is: WTF is Infinite Athlete?Using Chelsea as a use case, Ebersol is good on the big problem of sports tech, which AI is about to make worse.Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. 1 . THE RECRUIT (series)A fledgling CIA lawyer gets caught up in a dangerous game of international politics when a former asset threatens to expose the nature of her relationship with the agency unless they clear her name.CAST Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks Aarti Mann as Violet Daniel Quincy Annoh as Terence Vondie Curtis-Hall as Walter Nyland Kristian Bruun as Janus Ferber Laura Haddock as Max Meladze Colton Dunn as Lester Fivel Stewart as Hannah Byron Mann as Xander Angel Parker as Dawn Linus Roache as Senator Smoot Kaylah Zander as Amelia But whatever cutting satire or righteous anger The Recruit might have to offer is badly diluted over eight bloated hours — lost amid paper-thin characters, flimsy twists and a wishy-washy tone. What it turns out instead is a piece of content so forgettable, the CIA wouldn't have to lift a finger to disappear it from public memory.Initially, The Recruit appears to be a fish-out-of-water comedy. The first time we meet Owen, he's singing Taylor Swift to himself during a pee break while on a life-or-death mission in Russia; the second time we see him, after the show rewinds two weeks, he's slapping his knees to Nelly's “Hot in Herre” while waiting to meet his big-shot boss (Vondie Curtis-Hall) during his second day on the job. In no time at all, the rookie's gotten himself tangled up in a case involving a volatile off-the-books asset, Max Meladze (Laura Haddock), who's threatened to reveal damning agency secrets — and all before he's even figured out the office policies around booking plane tickets. But The Recruit is not really a comedy at all, despite a smattering of halfhearted jokes. (“The eagle has landed,” a CIA suit says of Owen, to which his colleague scoffs: “The eagle? More like the idiot.” Zing!) Nor does it seem quite thrilling enough to qualify as a thriller, though Doug Liman, who directed the first two episodes, brings some of his Bourne shaky-cam style to its occasional fistfights and gunfights. It's sort of meant to be a character study of Owen, I guess, except that The Recruit never seems able to make up its mind about who he's supposed to be either. The dialogue would seem to point one way: To hear his law school buddies tell it, he's a thrill-seeking playboy whose savior complex covers a bruised heart and a selfish streak — sort of a younger, greener, Gen-Z Bond. (One episode makes the comparison explicit when Owen, dressed in a borrowed tuxedo, is offered a martini; he turns it down for a White Claw.) Centineo's performance, on the other hand, reads as far too puppyish to sell the arrogance needed for that archetype. The show itself seems torn between laughing at Owen and admiring him, though many of his accomplishments don't actually seem that impressive: At one point, his colleague is bowled over to see Owen, a lawyer, bring a rogue agent to heel by reminding him that he could get sued. The weakness of Owen as a character might be forgivable in an ensemble piece, where other leads could take up the slack. But he's the center of the universe in The Recruit. Owen's coworkers seem obsessed with him, whether they're flirting with him in the hallway or cooking up new ways to sabotage him in front of their boss. Likewise his non-CIA friends — in particular his ex-turned-roommate Hannah (Fivel Stewart), who announces, “I don't want to be that girl who says she's worried about you” before spending the rest of the season worrying about him so hard that her own friends and family start to worry about her.Still, the world around Owen does yield some highlights. Haddock seems to be having great fun as Meladze, donning the half-smirk of a woman who knows she's winning a game no one else is even aware they're playing — and, later, the guarded pain of someone running from a past too painful to remember. The only aspect of her character she's not able to sell is the supposedly simmering sexual tension with Owen, not least because the tough, cunning Meladze seems like she could eat this clueless 24-year-old alive. Also entertaining is Bruun's Janus. The Recruit‘s one truly funny runner involves the never-ending battle between Janus, frazzled but offering prudent legal counsel, and the special operation team, whom he describes as being like “if meth became sentient and was given weaponry.” So determined is spec ops to embark on exciting but definitely illegal missions that they'll stoop to drugging him so he can't advise them to stop — a hilarious but disturbing window into the thought process that's gone into some of American intelligence's shadiest projects. It's in Janus that the show's potential for black comedy comes through most clearly, and it's too bad he's mostly relegated to the background of Owen's storyline.2. In March 2018, Charlie Ebersol announced to the world that he had been building a football league in secret. He called it the Alliance of American Football and looked to set forth where previous spring football leagues had failed. In fact the league would not make it past week eight in its inaugural season before it was shut down. However, buried under the despair, shock, and finger-pointing over its demise, there is a great story about the AAF that speaks to the very reason it was founded in the first place as a haven of second chances. No Extra Points follows the sudden, unlikely rise of AAF Fantasy Football; a grassroots operation led by fans who looked to create something where previously there was something missing. Its a story that speaks to all the content creators who ventured forth with websites, podcasts, and other digital content to show their love of this not-for-long football league. Just weeks after its sudden collapse, we take our first look at the brief life of the Alliance of American Football with Sports Illustrated football writer and MMQB NFL podcast host Conor Orr (The Curious Rise and Spectacular Crash of the Alliance of American Football; More Strange Tales from the Collapse of the AAF). Inspired by his work producing the 2017 documentary This Was the XFL for ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 series, director Charlie Ebersol concluded that the renegade league co-created by his father (NBC Sports producer Dick) and World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) impresario Vince McMahon in 2001 had actually been a viable concept, but poorly executed – especially the subpar quality of on-field play.  After reportedly being rebuffed by McMahon to potentially revive the old XFL brand, Ebersol instead dove into planning for his nascent AAF – with the prime focus on solid football product; the “Alliance” formally announced its launch on March 20, 2018, and by June had more than 100 players under contract. What followed was months of methodical and seemingly well-conceived efforts to: construct a solid football operations infrastructure under veteran NFL executive Bill Polian (including top coaches like Steve Spurrier, Rick Neuheisel and Dennis Erickson); solicit investment from (supposedly) stable deep-pocketed investors (such as player-turned-entrepreneur-turned-NFL-owner Reggie Fowler); develop business-enhancing media, data and wagering technology to augment on-field play; and even devise evolved rules to speed up games and improve player safety. The AAF made its debut with two simultaneous Saturday evening games in San Antonio and Orlando on February 11, 2019 in front of a surprisingly large CBS national primetime TV audience – but the league’s operational wheels started coming off almost immediately.  Chief among the issues: a Week One cash call that investor Fowler couldn’t cover, and a hastily-arranged $250MM majority equity investment from NHL Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon – who quickly concluded that operational finances were dangerously unstable, and likely unsustainable. After weeks of maneuvering, Dundon pulled the plug on further funding his pledge (rumored as only $70MM of the promised amount), announcing the suspension of the league’s operations on April 2nd – just two weeks shy of completing the regular season.  15 days later, the AAF filed for Chapter 7 (liquidation) bankruptcy. SI’s Orr walks host Tim Hanlon through the league’s chronology, the facts as we know them today, and what’s likely to come in the months ahead as the story of the AAF continues to play out. Thanks to OldSchoolShirts.com, SportsHistoryCollectibles.com, Streaker Sports, Audible, and 503 Sports for their support of the show!

Today The Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling welcomes the director of ESPN's 30 for 30: This Was The XFL as Charlie Ebersol joins the show. No stranger to the world of pro wrestling, Charlie's father legendary television executive, Dick Ebersol alongside his close friend Vince McMahon helped create the phenomenon that was Saturday Night's Main Event on NBC in 1985. But in addition to that creative genesis, Charlie takes us deep into the execution of the "smash-mouth" football league as the one year of action on the field led to a lifetime of "arm-chair" quarterbacking by it's detractors and biggest critics. We are also joined later in the show for a special TMPT EXTRA by WWE Hall of Famer, Tony Atlas as he gives John and Chad a look at his tag team with Rocky Johnson as well as his thoughts on a Rocky's son, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Great conversation between David Weinstein and director Charlie Ebersol. This Was The XFL A bold challenge, a fearless experiment and ultimately, a spectacular failure. In 2001, sports entertainment titans Dick Ebersol and Vince McMahon launched the XFL. It was hardly the first time a league had tried to compete with the NFL, but the brash audacity of the bid, combined with the personalities and charisma of Ebersol and McMahon and the marketing behemoths of their respective companies -- NBC and WWE -- captured headlines and a sense of undeniable anticipation about what was to come.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Rod Smart (He Hate Me)  of  ESPN Films' 30 for 30 “This Was the XFL.”    Three days before Super Bowl LI, ESPN Films will premiere the 30 for 30 documentary “This Was the XFL,” directed by Charlie Ebersol, chronicling the short-lived, ill-fated pro football league. The documentary, airing on February 2 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN, tells the story in fascinating, candid, and often rollicking fashion featuring fellow television legends and close friends – Dick Ebersol and Vince McMahon. A bold challenge, a fearless experiment and ultimately, a spectacular failure. In 2001, sports entertainment titans Ebersol and McMahon launched the XFL. Bringing together a cast of characters ranging from the boardrooms of General Electric to the practice fields of Las Vegas, “This Was the XFL” is the tale of -- yes -- all that went wrong, but also, how the XFL ended up influencing the way professional team sports are broadcast today. And at the center of it all - a decades long friendship between one of the most significant television executives in media history and the one-of-a-kind WWE impresario. This film will explore how Ebersol and McMahon brought the XFL to life, and why they had to let it go.
