070: Bayo Akomolafe | Rituals of Incompleteness in the Age of AI

Planetary Regeneration Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2025 58:08

On this episode of the Planetary Regeneration Podcast, host Gregory Landua sits down with philosopher and poet Bayo Akomolafe during a Regen Network retreat at Race Brook Lodge. Together they explore AI as trickster, the sacredness of incompleteness, and what it means to build tools for ecological governance in a world unraveling. From Yoruba cosmology to Karen Barad's agential realism, this conversation weaves themes of decoloniality, relationality, and the possibility of new rituals in the cracks of modernity. Bayo Akomolafe (PhD) is an author, speaker, and founder of the Emergence Network. Trained as a clinical psychologist and rooted in Yoruba tradition, his work invites us to meet the world differently. FUTURE FOSSILS

If you care about this show as a public good, consider signing up on Substack or Patreon today for bonus episodes, live calls, and more — or at least mash “subscribe” on Spotify or Apple Podcasts and leave a five-star review.  The unborn future archaeologists who find these episodes inscribed in DNA will thank you!Today I welcome you to join me for a long-awaited trialogue with two of the most thoughtful people I know: Gregory Landua, co-founder of Regen Network (and CEO of Regen Network Dev PBC), a project to bend finance and computing back into service of regenerative land stewardship, and Speaker John Ash, a machine learning engineer and artist/musician who walked away from his fintech job in 2017 in protest of the profit motive to build a democratic language model named Iris based on Cognicism, a new framework for collaboration rooted in shared wisdom. Gregory and John are two of the most prominent and articulate advocates in my network for a third way beyond starry-eyed technoutopianism and desperate doomer thinking. Neither of them pull any punches when it comes to their cutting critiques of extractive capitalism and its capture of both sustainability discourse and potentially emancipatory new information technologies. But both recognize, as I do, that with a deeper and more fundamental understanding of the nature of trust, money, technology, and value that humankind is fully capable of a socioeconomic transformation that could empower us to make every transaction serve our collective well-being.It took me a while to come around to believing in the notion that AI and Web3 could actually heal the damage we're doing to the biosphere, and even now I acknowledge that tools, like people, tend toward the production of harmful externalities when embedded in structurally unjust systems. But as I discussed with evolutionary biologist Manfred Laubichler and physicist Geoffrey West back in episode 212, not all innovation is created equal — and we may be on the cusp of a psychological and cultural reformation that opens up new paths to sanity and right relations. And it's well past time for us to move beyond a “nature good, tech bad” or “tech good, nature bad” duality — both sides come from the same flaw in comprehension that allows us to believe we can escape our natural limits, or that self-destruction will allow us to escape our duties as the steward-servants of our living world.Enjoy this soulful and provocative discussion!✨ Mentioned & Related Links:The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber & David WengrowUSGS on climate change and monsoons in the US SWEarlier recording of Gregory Landua & Speaker John Ash in dialogueGregory Landua on Kevin Owocki's Green Pill PodcastMG on “value creation” as the export of externalitiesSpeaker John Ash on CognicismSpeaker John Ash on Cognition & ConflictSpeaker John Ash on SpotifyAn Oral History of The End of “Reality” by MGAccelerando by Charles StrossGlasshouse by Charles StrossRapture of the Nerds by Charles Stross & Cory Doctorow✨ Support The Show:• Subscribe on Substack or Patreon for COPIOUS extras, including private Discord server channels and MANY secret episodes• Make one-off donations at @futurefossils on Venmo, $manfredmacx on CashApp, or @michaelgarfield on PayPal• Buy the music (intro/outro: “Olympus Mons” & “Sonnet A”; episode codas “Transparent” & “Signal”) on Bandcamp• Buy the books we discuss at the Future Fossils Bookshop.org page and I get a small cut from your support of indie booksellers• Browse and buy original paintings and prints or email me to commission new work✨ Related FF Episodes:213 - Amber Case & Michael Zargham on Entangled Technologies & Design As Governance206 - Scout Rainer Wiley on AI vs. BS Jobs, The Return of Culture, and Eldritch Wonders in The Bright Apocalypse193 - Kimberly Dill on Environmental Philosophy: In Defense of Wildness & Night181 - Jim Rutt on The Pre- and Post-History of GameB178 - Chris Ryan on Exhuming The Human from Our Eldritch Institutions176 - Exploring Ecodelia with Richard Doyle, Sophie Strand, and Sam Gandy at the Psilocybin Summit163 - Bitcoin & Fungal Economies with Toby Kiers & Brandon Quittem146 - Raising Earth Consciousness with Ralph Metzner, Dennis McKenna, Gay Dillingham, Valerie Plame Wilson, Allan Badiner, and Michael Garfield at Synergia Ranch, April 2016141 - Nora Bateson on Warm Data vs. The Cold Equations133 - Brian Swimme on Telling A New Story of Our Universe122 - Magenta Ceiba on Regenerative Everything94 - Mark Nelson on Ecotechnics & Biosphere 2 (Part 1)61 - Jamaica Stevens (On Crisis, Rebirth, Transformation)60 - Sean Esbjörn-Hargens Goes Meta on Everything: Integral Ecology & Impact56 - Sophia Rokhlin (Anarchy, Ecology, Economy, and Shamanism)51 - Daniel Schmachtenberger (Designing A Win-Win World for Everyone) This is a public episode. Regenerative has become a buzzword, with companies big and small making commitments to launch regenerative products. But what does regenerative product design actually look like? And how do we measure the impacts of product design and ingredient choices on people and our planet?  This week, we discuss this and more with Ethan Soloviev, farmer and chief innovation officer at HowGood, a food sustainability rating company. His work with international retailers and CPG brands combines on-the-ground agricultural expertise in 34 countries with sustainability-driven market insights. Ethan has developed environmental and social impact metrics for analysis of more than 3,000 brands, including Ahold-Delhaize, Walmart and Danone. He regularly presents on Regenerative Agriculture and Regenerative Business at conferences around the world, and is the author of “Regenerative Enterprise: Optimizing for Multi-Capital Abundance” and the monthly “Regeneration Newsroom." We discuss: Cultivating a regenerative paradigmHow to provide food producers with the information they need to minimize the negative climate and labor risks of their productsWhere regeneration strategy needs to differ when thinking about large vs small producersWhich metrics companies and consumers need to be looking atThe business benefits of regenerationEthan's optimism around ecosystem service marketplacesWhether it's worth trying to fix modern capitalism or if we should take inspiration from more traditional local systemsWhy Ethan thinks biotech and plant-based innovations are not enough on their own and why they must be used in conjunction with a new mindset Show Notes Chipotle and Kraft Heinz use this start-up to track and prove how green they are: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/06/06/chipotle-and-kraft-use-start-up-howgood-to-track-how-green-they-are.htmlWhite Leaf Provisions: https://www.whiteleafprovision.com/Carol Sanford: https://carolsanford.com/One Planet Business for Biodiversity Coalition: https://op2b.org/Ecosystem Services Marketplace: https://www.ecosystemmarketplace.com/ecosystem-services/Regen Network: https://www.regen.network/Nori: https://nori.com/reNature: https://www.renature.co/Burlap and Barrel: https://www.burlapandbarrel.com/Yolele Foods: https://yolele.com/Perennial Agriculture: https://www.perennial.earth/ *Giveaway Details* We've teamed up with our partners at New Hope Network to offer ALL of our listeners an exclusive 25% off discount for an Expo West 2023 badge and ONE lucky listener will have the opportunity to win a free booth at Expo West 2024 ($8k value). Agriculture is essential in the fight against the climate crisis, not only for mankind but for the survival of the Earth. Therefore, it's crucial that we transform the agricultural system through building infrastructure using technology and creating a connection to the human economy and ecological health through our economic activity. Today's guest, Gregory Landua, is very passionate about changing society to honor and regenerate ecological health, embracing the practical aspects of regenerative agriculture to assist farms and communities to help combat the climate crisis. Gregory is the CEO, Co-Founder, and Co-Chief Regeneration Officer of Regen Network, a full-stack blockchain software development company leading the way towards tracking and funding ecological regeneration and creating new tools for humanity to relate to its environment. During the conversation, Cory and Gregory talk about the new look of farming and agriculture, the future of carbon credits, and innovations in technology.  Gregory shares the different approaches and strategies Regen Network uses to connect the social construction of value to ecological health, and the benefits of open-source, community-owned infrastructure and blockchain technology to the land steward and the planet.   -- --

The cutting edge of regenerative technology is aligning market incentives with regenerative land stewardship. This is an area that Gregory Landua and his colleagues with the Regen Network have been pioneering since 2017 as they began asking questions of how to scale impact and help farmers and land managers switch to regenerative practices.By focusing on what Gregory calls a watershed view, the Regen Network was able to put the pieces together to monitor, value, and sell ecosystem services directly to buyers around the world. This may sound familiar as the carbon credit market has been gaining traction over the last decade. In fact, it has been growing 30% year over year according to Gregory and it will continue to heat up as more and more companies and organizations voluntarily pledge to offset their carbon emissions. In this podcast episode Gregory talks about his background and the catalyzing moments that led to the genesis of the Regen Network. He covers the critical challenges that they had to overcome in order to not just create the marketplace for these credits, but also how to work with the farmers and gather data about the underlying ecology including soil health, aforestation, biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and more. This episode should give you an introduction that there are some major things in the works to help bring about a healthy, resilient, and regenerative future. While some of the technology may be complex, at the heart of the matter is the revitalization and preservation of land and nature.

Today, LIFT Partners Kevin Bayuk and Ryan Honeyman chat about the topic of decentralization and how this manifests to varying degrees within the blockchain and cryptocurrencies. We start off with some simple definitions, clarifying the differences and relationships between the concept of a decentralized ledger, the blockchain, and the cryptocurrencies that use it. The important questions here are around who benefits from these systems and platforms, and whether it is possible to create cryptocurrencies and decentralization that serve more people. This raises the important theme of governance and how it can decide the fate of a technology or company. The last part of our chat is spent looking at historical and contemporary examples of decentralization, and how these can inform our vision of what a decentralized world might look like. Today we’re joined by co-founder and co-Chief Regeneration Officer of Regen Network, Gregory Landua. Regen Network is a land ecological commons management platform and the backbone for a new approach to ecosystem service markets based on verified ecological state.   Their community of actors engage with ecological regeneration, ecological monitoring, verification, distributed computing and technology development, centered around Regen Ledger. Network members track specific changes of land, oceans and watersheds. By improving our understanding of ecosystems and enabling rewards for verified positive changes, Regen Network catalyses the regeneration of the earth's ecosystems.   Gregory embraces the practical aspects of regenerative agriculture design by being a tropical agroforestry farm owner and manager, and for many years worked to assist farms and communities in a variety of climate zones as a permaculture designer. He has studied marine and terrestrial ecology and evolutionary biology in the Galapagos Islands, translated for Amazonian rainforest guides, fought wildfires in the wilderness of Alaska, lived in established ecovillages, founded a successful work-live cooperative, and studied the nuances of ecology and ethics.   In this lively conversation, we explore the impact of making information available to all. This week we’re joined by evolutionary biologist Toby Kiers and Bitcoin entrepreneur Brandon Quittem for an interdisciplinary trialogue on the analogy between digital currencies and the so-called Wood Wide Web. Toby studies fungal economies in the lab, and her research challenges the commonly-held assumption that mycorrhizal networks are socialist utopia hippie love-fests. Brandon evangelizes “The Internet of Money” as an exemplary instance of biomimicry and argues that Bitcoin is doing for human finance what mycelial networks have done for terrestrial biology. And I wade in with more than my usual helping of paradoxically-critical enthusiasm to ask if “natural” really equals “healthy” or “desirable” in our rush to serve the evolutionary algorithm of technological development.  This one should appeal to anybody on the “Transhumanist Bitcoin Bro to Luddite Biodynamic Farmer” spectrum…share your thoughts about the episode in ourFuture Fossils Discord server or Facebook group, where it’s easy to link up with amazing fellow weirdos. If you believe in the value of this show and want to see it thrive, support Future Fossils on Patreon and/or please rate and review Future Fossils on Apple Podcasts! Christian Shearer is the CEO & Co-Founder at Regen Network, a community of actors engaging with ecological regeneration, ecological monitoring, verification, distributed computing and technology development, centered around Regen Ledger. Christian went from permaculturist and educator in Southeast Asia to a global tech entrepreneur looking to solve global challenges like climate change, desertification, and resource depletion that affect nearly every aspect of human life. These experiences opened his eyes to the most powerful pathways for reversing climate change and unlocking the largest untapped market in the world: farmers and the earth’s Ecosystems. So he decided to create a block-chain based marketplace that allows land stewards to sell more than just produce. Farmers can monetize their ecosystem services to buyers around the world, functioning to reverse climate change, and improve their soils, through incentivized carbon removal.  Full show notes and worksheets can be found here: evolvethe.world/episodes/christian-shearerWhat You Will Learn In This Episode:How Christian bought a piece of land in Thailand after collegeHow Christian became an expert in permaculture to fulfill his own needsWhat a world renowned permaculture designer taught him about inspirationThe surprising secret of just how much agriculture affects our livesWhy Christian moved back to the states to start Terra Genesis InternationalThe biggest lesson Christian learned working with permaculture clientsThe fundamental questions Christian started asking self about agriculture and the climate crisis that led to RegenHow incentives can drive change, for better or worseHow to better incentivize farmers to practice more regenerative agricultureHow Regen is using open source, blockchain technology and advanced verification to support farmersHow Christian went from permaculturist to technology expertWhat TechStars taught Christian and how it shaped his businessWhy companies would want to purchase carbon creditsThe counter intuitive reason why carbon credits incentivize companies to have more sustainable business practicesHow entrepreneurship affected Christians previous marriageThe impact of Microsoft purchasing offset credits from RegenHow Regen's blockchain technology worksWhy they are open sourcing their technology, even to competitorsThe problem with big agricultureThe real reason Christian has dedicated his life to this missionIf you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? It takes less than 60 seconds, and it really makes a difference in helping to convince hard-to-get guests. Building on the theme of profitable ecosystem regeneration, I spoke to Gregory Landua, CEO and co-founder of the Regen Network. Gregory has worked in ecosystem regeneration for a while. Formerly working as the CEO of Terra Genesis, nova chocolate, the Regrarian's platform and Gaia University. He is also the co-author of the groundbreaking book Regenerative Enterprise: Optimizing for Multi-Capital Abundance, and of The Levels of Regenerative Agriculture, In this interview Gregory gives an overview of what the Regen network is and aims to accomplish. Specifically, we explore the roles of decentralized technology including the emerging potential of the blockchain to create secure networks that facilitate collaboration, consensus, agreements, and community. We also talk about what systemic changes would need to happen to make permaculture type stewardship of the land our default as a culture rather than a fringe practice. Gregory also explains how technology can be leveraged for connecting people to crucial information and to reach communities that have been left behind in the industrialized information age. Though we don't cover the job market in detail in this episode, I'm hoping that this conversation could inspire those of you who have studied or who work in IT and programming to see some ways that you could use your skills and experience to work towards environmental restoration and regeneration. We certainly need everyone's contributions in this effort and gardening and farming are by no means the only ways to help. The exploration of how technology can be harnessed for a global shift in consciousness and renewed cultural priorities is a topic that I'll be increasingly exploring on this podcast and I would love to hear from any of you listening if you have information or ideas on how the incredible power of technology can be used to buck the trend that has been disconnecting us from our natural world and our local communities. Or, if you believe that technology can only facilitate disconnection, what alternative solutions are there to our increasing dependence on digital connectivity that you might propose? You can post comments and feedback on the website or email me directly at info@abundantedge.com. I really hope to continue this exploration with all of you. This allows those who use these systems to decentralize how to account for the use of natural resources and how we can, with these tools and others emergent ideas, allow farmers, designers, and others to retain and generate more of their own wealth, in whatever way they value that capital. Find out more about Gregory, the white paper he mentioned, and how to get involved at regen.network. Though I'm not a techno-optimist by any means, I do like to see the interplay of culture, technology, and emerging ideas. How we might use the blockchain, most well known for cryptocurrency and Bitcoin, in ways never initially imagined to explore different ways to conduct business, track information, engage in politics, and re-democratize the use of one's own data. Even with those thoughts, I leave this conversation with more questions for Gregory, the Regen Network, and everyone involved with implementing the token, ledgers, and accounting system. How will this open source idea be accountable? Will everyone need to buy a token? If so, what does that mean for accessibility? What kind of technology and Internet connection is required to participate, as Gregory mentioned programmers near the end, and how will that create a digital divide shutting some people out of the system and inviting others in? Those are some of the initial questions that come to mind, and I'm sure you have many of your own. If you do and would like them included in the next conversation about Blockchain and Regenerative Enterprise, leave a comment in the show notes, or get in touch. SUBSCRIBE: WWW.EARTHREPAIRRADIO.COM This episode looks at a new economic system being developed using cryptocurrency to promote regenerative agricultural practices. Gregory Landua first guides the listener through a "Cryptocurrency and Blockchain 101" for all of those unfamiliar with these new technologies. (for those listeners who are really familiar, you can skip to the 24 minute mark). He then explains how his new project Regen Network is building a blockchain and cryptocurrency that is based on the monitoring of the effects of regenerative agriculture. The result would be a new economic force on the planet that is rooted in the regeneration of planetary ecosystems and agricultural lands. This is all pretty mind blowing, but listen carefully for the hour and a quarter and you will be introduced to a vision for an entirely different economic system who's value is based off of restoring soil, water, forests, and oceans. Gregory has studied marine and terrestrial ecology and evolutionary biology in the Galapagos Islands, translated for Amazonian rainforest guides, fought wildfires in the wilderness of Alaska, lived in established ecovillages, founded a successful work-live cooperative, and studied the nuances of ecology and ethics. Gregory has B.S. in Environmental Science and Ethics from Oregon State University, and a M.Sc in Regenerative Entrepreneurship and Design from Gaia University. Gregory embraces the practical aspects of regenerative agriculture design by being a tropical agroforestry farm owner and manager, and working to assist farms and communities in a variety of climate zones. Now, as co-founder of Regen Network, Gregory is working to link economic value to ecological regeneration. Regen Network is a blockchain driven transparency and smart contracting platform designed to facilitate the verification of ecological state and coordinate multi-stakeholder groups to achieve ecological regeneration through smart-ecological contracts.

What if we could develop a currency backed by the living health of ecosystems? A sort of ‘life currency’ with a robust verification system that would incentivize practices that promote ecological health? What if we could use technology to regain the capacity to understand the consequences of our day-to-day decisions and act for the health of planet Earth? And what would it take to build this infrastructure—a kind of Subway to Regeneration? Gregory Landua is the Co-Founder and CEO of Regen Network, a community of actors working to create a balance sheet for Earth. By improving our understanding of ecosystems and enabling rewards for verified positive changes, the organization seeks to catalyze the regeneration of the earth’s ecosystems. Gregory also serves as the CEO of Terra Genesis International, a pioneer in the shift toward regenerative agriculture. An international regenerative design consultancy, TGI works to provide solutions that regenerate soil, increase biodiversity and improve the bottom line for farmers and ranchers. Gregory is the co-author of Regenerative Enterprise: Optimizing for Multi-Capital Abundance.  Today, Gregory joins Ross, Christophe, and Paul to explain how a financial instrument can be backed by ecological health and the important role of decentralization in establishing a blockchain system we can trust. Gregory speaks to the aim of the Regen Network in helping humans regain the capacity to relate to landscapes in a regenerative way. He offers insight around the organization’s work in developing high-quality verification of ecological outcomes, facilitating interoperability between blockchains, and designing a consortium-based governance model. Listen in to understand how Regen Network is working to create additional revenue streams for farmers in the realms of quality data and carbon sequestration.   Resources Regen Network Terra Genesis International Books by Elinor Ostrom Land to Market farmOS Cosmos Network Polkadot   Key Takeaways  [0:30] Gregory’s path to Regen Network Distributed ledger technology and regenerative agriculture What if currency backed by living health of ecosystem?
