If you know a source for one of these, shout and I'll edit it in. Possessions 1. If you want to find out about people's opinions on a product, google reddit. You'll get real people arguing, as compared to the SEO'd Google results. 2. Some banks charge you $20 a month for an account, others charge you 0. If you're with one of the former, have a good explanation for what those $20 are buying. 3. Things you use for a significant fraction of your life (bed: 1/3rd, office-chair: 1/4th) are worth investing in. 4. “Where is the good knife?” If you're looking for your good X, you have bad Xs. Throw those out. 5. If your work is done on a computer, get a second monitor. Less time navigating between windows means more time for thinking. 6. Establish clear rules about when to throw out old junk. Once clear rules are established, junk will probably cease to be a problem. This is because any rule would be superior to our implicit rules (“keep this broken stereo for five years in case I learn how to fix it”). 7. Don't buy CDs for people. They have Spotify. Buy them merch from a band they like instead. It's more personal and the band gets more money. 8. When buying things, time and money trade-off against each other. If you're low on money, take more time to find deals. If you're low on time, stop looking for great deals and just buy things quickly online. Cooking 9. Steeping minutes: Green at 3, black at 4, herbal at 5. Good tea is that simple! 10. Food actually can be both cheap, healthy, tasty, and relatively quick to prepare. All it requires is a few hours one day to prepare many meals for the week. 11. Cooking pollutes the air. Opening windows for a few minutes after cooking can dramatically improve air quality. 12. Food taste can be made much more exciting through simple seasoning. It's also an opportunity for expression. Buy a few herbs and spices and experiment away. 13. When googling a recipe, precede it with ‘best'. You'll find better recipes. Productivity 14. Advanced search features are a fast way to create tighter search statements. For example: img html will return inferior results compared to: img html -w3 15. You can automate mundane computer tasks with Autohotkey (or AppleScript). If you keep doing a sequence “so simple a computer can do it”, make the computer do it. 16. Learn keyboard shortcuts. They're easy to learn and you'll get tasks done faster and easier. 17. Done is better than perfect. 18. Keep your desk and workspace bare. Treat every object as an imposition upon your attention, because it is. A workspace is not a place for storing things. It is a place for accomplishing things. 19. Reward yourself after completing challenges, even badly. Body 20. The 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes of screenwork, look at a spot 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will reduce eye strain and is easy to remember (or program reminders for). 21. Exercise (weightlifting) not only creates muscle mass, it also improves skeletal structure. Lift! 22. Exercise is the most important lifestyle intervention you can do. Even the bare minimum (15 minutes a week) has a huge impact. Start small. 23. (~This is not medical advice~). Don't waste money on multivitamins, they don't work. Vitamin D supplementation does seem to work, which is important because deficiency is common. 24. Phones have gotten heavier in the last decade and they're actually pretty hard on your wrists! Use a computer when it's an alternative or try to at least prop up your phone. Success 25. History remembers those who got to market first. His research focuses on health policy evaluation and the value of health and longevity. If you are using a laptop, you likely do not have a number pad on the right side of your keyboard. However, most standard keyboards have it, despite many people not using the section at all. Sure, accountants and programmers use it all day every day, but for the rest of us, it would be great to be able to use those keys for something else. Luckily, Avram has a couple of great tools to be able to put those 14 keys to your right to work for you.SharpKeysFirst up is a tool called SharpKeys. This tool is designed specifically to remap one to another. So, for instance, maybe you want to turn your number pad plus and minus keys into Windows volume up and volume down keys instead. Using SharpKeys you can do exactly that.The benefit of using this particular tool is that it does not have to run in the background, using system resources. Instead, it makes changes to your Windows registry to actually tell Windows to treat the keys differently. This will reduce system lag while giving direct access to the computer's functionality. The downside of this is that it means you cannot do anything terribly advanced with the keys. It is a direct one-to-one map, and nothing more. If simple is your preference, then SharpKey is for you.AutoHotkeyHowever, if you want to do more advanced functions with your keyboard, then you might want to give AutoHotkey a shot. With AutoHotkey, you can do a lot more than just map keys to one another. You can create macros, write common phrases, open programs, and run commands that do not have their own keyboard shortcuts.Let's pretend that Notepad didn't have the ctrl + s keyboard shortcut for save. You could also type alt, f, s to access the menu manually. But, with AutoHotkey, you could turn one of the keys on your keyboard, or even a keyboard combination, into that same command. So, you could reprogram ctrl + s to manually type out alt, f, s and save the file.Even more interesting, you can limit the scope of your keyboard macros. Perhaps you only want a particular shortcut to work in Microsoft Edge. You can set the context of ctrl + s to do something completely different, like clicking on a save button on the screen. Then, you could use the same key combination to do something else in Notepad.Windows Mouse KeysIf you've ever thought that using your keyboard to move your mouse pointer might be a great use of your time and patience, then Windows Mouse Keys is available. You can search for "mouse keys" in the Windows 10 menu, or in the Settings app. This Windows feature allows you to use your number pad's arrow keys to move the mouse up, down, left, right, and all of the diagonals. La cuestión es que raíz de leer este artículo, pensé que sería un reto interesante, transpolar estos scripts a Ubuntu. Y digo a Ubuntu, porque como sabes este es distribución de cabecera y GNOME Shell uno de los entornos de escritorio que utilizo por defecto. Sin embargo, como te he comentado anteriormente, esto no quita que se pueda utilizar en cualquier otro entorno de escritorio, ya sea derivado de GNOME, como puede ser MATE o Cinnamon, o incluso en otros como XFCE o KDE Plasma por citar algunos. Mark Mirchandani is back this week as he and co-host Brian Dorsey learn all about voice coding with some great guests! Emily Shea, senior software engineer at Fastly and user of Talon Voice, and Ryan Hileman, developer of Talon Voice, tell us about Repetitive Strain Injury and how it led to the design and use of Talon Voice. Talon allows not only straight voice input but includes eye tracking, noise recognition, and user customization to perform complex actions like moving windows, selecting text, and user-specific workflow customizations without touching any hardware. Emily describes her experiences with Talon, including the process to get started and how she looked past voice recognition stereotypes to find how useful the product could be. She demos Talon for us, explaining how the alphabet system works. Ryan types a sentence using his voice then explains the process of developing the alphabet and other parts of Talon. Later, Ryan and Emily tell us how they write code using Talon and the logistics of using the software at home or in the office. We end the show talking about how Talon and voice recognition software have helped people with and without debilitating injuries and given hope to those spending hours on computers every day. Emily stresses the importance of adding accessibility to websites to accommodate Talon users and others with disabilities. Emily Shea Emily is a Senior Software Engineer at Fastly, where she works on the platform for delivering core Edge Cloud configurations. Because of a Repetitive Strain Injury, she develops using Talon’s speech recognition. Ryan Hileman Ryan was a software engineer for over a decade and in 2017 quit his job due to hand pain. He has since worked full time on Talon with a mission of enabling anyone to be equally productive for any and all tasks on a computer without their hands.
