Episode Highlights [04:38] Gunny's Background and His Brother's Passing Gunny grew up in a household with Ayurvedic practitioners. But he didn't understand its power until much later. In 2006, his brother got into a tragic car accident that led to his death. They were planning to meet that day. When he heard the news about the accident, Gunny's body went into fight or flight mode.  He recalls being in a zombie-like state from the moment he arrived at the hospital until they spread his brother's ashes. [08:00] Facing Grief and Processing Emotions He interpreted the advice ‘be strong' to mean that he cannot show any emotion. However, he has realised that true strength comes from feeling the emotions of grief and sadness. When you feel your emotions, you allow them to be released. Resisting emotions hinder you from experiencing the resilience of the body and the mind. [09:56] Getting Diagnosed with PTSD Gunny didn't allow himself to feel his emotions. Six months later, his dad diagnosed him with PTSD. He experienced deep anxiety and depression, suicidal thoughts, and every manifestation of suppressing his feelings. Without allowing yourself to process emotions, your body will forcefully put you through it once you want to move on. Gunny got to a point when he was sick and tired of feeling sick and tired. He knew he had a choice, and he wasn't going to be that way for the rest of his life. He then went to his father for help. His dad knew about his situation but never interfered because he knew Gunny wasn't ready. [11:33] Learning How to Deal with Emotions His father instructed him to start meditating, change his diet, do yoga, take Ashwagandha, and focus his attention on his life. When his father said that his situation at that time was no longer grief but suffering, it all clicked in Gunny's head. He then diverted his mind to creative things. He went all-in on entrepreneurship. Gunny felt better week by week. After five weeks, he realised he was totally fine. [13:22] The Power of Ayurvedic Techniques  Ayurveda involves different techniques on how the mind works and how quickly you can shift it. Gunny carried on the Ayurvedic techniques he applied in dealing with his grief years later. If he goes back to that experience now, he reckons he would have gotten himself out of it in two weeks. He founded YouVeda to give people the resources he didn't have. [17:33] The Mind to Body Connection in Ayurveda Ayurveda emphasizes the mind to body connection. Furthermore, it stresses balance in the mind, body and spirit. Each of us has a unique dosha constitution and a dominant dosha. But we can rotate in and out of doshas throughout the seasons and circumstances of our life. Ayurveda is a 5000-year old practise that stresses the science of life. Its essence is to live in balance within yourself, the universe, and nature. Ayurveda's most important point is that ‘as the mind conceives, the body follows'. It's about continuous balance in whatever we do. [20:18] How Science is now Validating Ancient Practices  Ancient traditions have existed for many years and are now getting scientific validation. One example is the mind to body connection in the gut that impacts our health. [21:05] Gunny's Ayurvedic Background Gunny's father studied Ayurveda in India. Because Ayurveda wasn't licensed in the US, he became a naturopathic doctor. Since Ayurveda and naturopathy are similar modalities involving the mind to body connection, his father combined them in his practice. His uncle and aunt followed suit from his father. [22:06] YouVeda's Products Doctors with 45 years of clinical experience are responsible for developing their products. His father is also an advisor. YouVeda has products for different modalities: mood, digestion, joints, immunity, overall body. They've combined the greatest natural ingredients with modern science. YouVeda has supplement kits incorporating everything you need in a convenient packet. They also give resources in addition to the products, depending on the modality you choose.  7 Powerful Quotes ‘The true strength comes in feeling those emotions, being with your grief, letting your body become just overwhelmed with the sadness, with the grief.' ‘Emotions come up to be felt. It's energy and motion. Once those emotions come up to be felt, eventually, they are released.' ‘I knew that what I was doing was not how the rest of my life was going to be, and I had a choice.' ‘If you've been through hell and your mind plays these tricks, and you've been in the deepest, darkest place, do you want nothing more than just to feel fine?' ‘In its essence, simplicity, [Ayurveda] is to live in balance, balance within yourself, balance within the universe, balance with nature.' ‘As the mind conceives and believes, the body follows.' ‘We need to understand how the body works. It's combining those lifestyle interventions with the right supplements, with some good nutrition, and voila, we have a much better chance of being healthy for a very long time.' About Gunny Gunny Sodhi is an Ayurvedic medicine practitioner, entrepreneur, and founder of YouVeda. His company offers premium Ayurvedic holistic solutions, including supplement kits. The foundation of the family-owned business is the 30+ years of combined experience of Gunny, his wife, and his parents. In this week's episode of Your Body Advocate, I talk about how to create the best team of health professionals to work together on your behalf and make the best team possible for you. The Western Medicine model has helped millions of people and have many brilliant minds involved to come up with amazing ways to help people. To make the most of this medical model, these 2 steps are obvious, but can help you make the most of your team: Ask questions: write down the questions so you are sure to have them ready at the right time. Communicate how you respond to your health professional's treatments and suggestions. When you have gone through the Western Medicine model and you are still struggling, in pain, or just don't feel well, here are some options to help. Look for some other support in your community. Because so many of my clients ask me for names or alternative options to feel better, yet have never heard of some of the treatments I suggest, I wanted to go over a few today. First, I will list the treatments with the dictionary definition. Next, I will give a few personal examples. Here are 4 ideas of treatments to try: Acupuncture Chiropractic Care Ayurveda Homeopathy Acupuncture: A system of integrative medicine that involves pricking the skin orr tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental and emotional conditions. Originating in ancient China, acupuncture is now widely practiced in the West. Chiropractic Care: A system of integrative medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to house other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs. Ayurveda: Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine that is the traditional medicine of India and seeks to treat and integrate body, mind and spirit using a comprehensive holistic approach, especially by emphasizing diet, herbal remedies, exercise, meditation, breathing and physical therapy. Homeopathy: The medical treatment using cures founded on resemblances; the theory and it's practice that disease is cured by remedies which produce on a healthy person effects similar to the symptoms of the complaint under which the patient suffers, the remedies being usually administered in minute doses. These are just 4 basic alternative treatments you could try to get a different perspective to your issues if you are not having any luck with Western Medicine. World renowned keynote speaker, best-selling author, world traveler… and she recently got engaged in Bali after one of the most epic proposal stories we’ve ever heard! But Sahara Rose wasn’t always a glowing picture of health and success.   In fact, she went through a really tough time - she didn’t have periods, lost her hair, suffered from bloating and constipation. No one could find the cause or cure the problem. Until one day she read about the Vata dosha - it was like reading her autobiography. Following ayurvedic practices to bring this dosha back into balance, Sahara regained her health.   But it was hard - Ayurveda processes are old school, and many don’t work for today’s busy lifestyles. So Sahara decided to redesign these ancient practices to fit the modern world.   Her two books - The Idiot’s guide to Ayurveda, and Eat Feel Fresh (with a foreword by Deepak Chopra!) offer simple and easy to follow strategies to get your doshas, and your health, back into balance.   What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is over 5000 years old; it’s the world’s oldest heath system. It means “the knowledge of life.” Ayurveda involves your entire life in order to heal you: nutrition, digestion, self-care, movement, morning rituals, your environment, your relationships, and your purpose.    What Dosha Are You? Dosha means energy. In Ayurveda, we’re all made up of three energies from the elements space, air, fire, water and earth. The three doshas are Vata (air and space), Pita (fire and water) and Katha (earth and water).   Vata Mind: creative, artistic, go with the flow, visionary… but if unbalanced: difficulty coming down to earth, anxiety, everything up in the air, head in the clouds, not liking a set schedule Body: lean, flexible… but if unbalanced: cold skin, slow digestion, bloating, cracking joints, unbalanced appetite, dry skin.   Pita Mind: feisty, high energy, driven, business-minded, regimented, likes routine, motivated…. But if unbalanced: angry, aggressive. Body: strong and athletic… but if unbalanced: high risk of inflammation, heart burn, acne, rashes.   Katha Mind: calm, peaceful, very giving… but if unbalanced: gives too much, unable to set boundaries, people pleaser. Body: solid, endurance… but if unbalanced: lethargic and prone to increased mucous.    We are all a combination of all three of these doshas, in varying amounts. What’s more, these doshas may change depending on where you are in your life. Ayurveda heals the doshas within us so that we can rebalance our health.   To find out your dosha, take the quiz on Sahara’s website.   How to Rebalance Your Dosha: Vata: Warm, grounding foods - think roots! Stay away from excessively cold foods.   Pita: Cooling, alkalizing foods - more leafy greens, bitter veg, coconut. Avoid spicy foods.   Kapha: Stimulating foods - warming spices to rev up metabolism.   In her latest book, Eat Feel Fresh, Sahara makes it easy to incorporate this ancient healing practice into your life with over 100 ayurvedic plant-based recipes. Her other book, An Idiot’s Guide to Ayurveda contains all the self-care and lifestyle strategies to take your health to the next level. Check out Sahara’s podcast, Highest Self.   Ayurvedic self-care 101: Tongue scraping - helps your digestion, keeps your mouth fresh Oil pulling followed by warm water and salt - swill oil (coconut, sesame) for 3 to 20 minutes. Dry brush - brush your skin upwards towards your heart - this removes dead skin cells. Oil your body - give yourself a massage, hone in on the dry bits, show your body some love.   Being hailed as “Sex and the City for Food,” The Food Heals Podcast brings together experts in the field of nutrition, health and healing to teach you the best-kept natural secrets to being a hotter, healthier, happier YOU!   The Food Heals Podcast is hosted by Allison Melody and Suzy Hardy – two self-proclaimed natural chicks who will rock your world and change your beliefs about health! Do you suffer from chronic joint pain, weight gain, IBS, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, rosacea, acne, or arthritis? Today I have with me, Michelle Costantini, a Nutrition & Lifestyle Consultant who specializes in the Ayurvedic approach to wellness. She is going to walk us through her top 3 SIMPLE tips for easing these and other ailments! Joint Pain, IBS n Weight Gain – Oh MY! Good morning Michelle! That was a pretty long list of health issues I just read and I’m SO excited to have you talk about how to take simple steps to start healing. Before we begin, can you share your story about how you started, your background and what the heck is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is a 5-thousand-year old holistic system of medicine from India that treats each person individually. It provides simple guidance about food and lifestyle so that people who are healthy can stay healthy and those with health issues can improve their situations. It’s this approach that attracted me to Ayurveda. When my mother was undergoing chemo a few years ago, she was losing weight, strength, and appetite but as long as her blood work was good, the doctors were happy. Unfortunately, it proved not enough. So I began studying Ayurveda in Europe, then I went to India and then I came back here to the U.S. I work as a consultant and I’m also studying for the practitioner’s level. Thank you for that. I know we’ve talked about this to a degree, and while I know the answer, can you explain the common thread with: joint pain, IBS, weight gain, constipation etc? What do people need to pay attention to? We need to pay attention to our digestion. Most people have digestive issues and don’t even know it. If we don’t allow the food in our stomach to digest properly, it’ll remain there, blocked. Putting more food on top of undigested food or partially digested food makes fertile ground for problems like bloating and gas. Over time, these ‘inconveniences’ can lead to more serious problems like IBS, constipation, acne, and even arthritis. The idea is to keep your digestive enzymes working properly and not buried under tons of food or drowned out by quarts of liquid. So what are your top three SUPER simple tips for helping people with joint pain, IBS or weight gain? Well, for joint pain, avoid nightshades - which are your tomatoes, white potatoes (Not sweet potatoes), eggplant, and peppers - all peppers except black pepper. These cause inflammation and aggravate arthritis. For IBS learn to avoid foods that do not combine well - like dairy and fruit for example, like in a shake. And use a few spices in your cooking like cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, & black pepper to name a few. They really help with digestion. For weight gain - a simple tip: hot water sipping throughout the day (or herbal teas, ginger tea). Avoid cold drinks and especially drinks with ice in them. The cold blocks your digestion and the food just sits in your stomach. Actually, we recommend this for EVERYONE, ALWAYS. It’s the simple, natural way to help your body detox. Some fun things coming up for us in the near future: Michelle and I are teaming up to bring you fun cooking classes and workshops to get you through the Holiday Season. Twin Ponds Integrative Center is having it’s 10th Anniversary Celebration Event! Look for those and other services on my website www.supersimplehealthy.com or facebook page and coming soon to the MINDBODY app! What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is composed of two words. Ayur means Life, and Veda means Knowledge. Thus, Ayurveda deals with how to live a healthy, balanced life. It is a traditional, holistic system of health science from India, which has been practiced for over 5,000 years. According to Ayurveda there are three main body types also known as doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Based on your body type, you’ll be able to understand how you function mentally, emotionally and physically in relation to your overall body type. Wouldn’t be nice to understand your body, its function so you can make the right choice for your body type instead of building dependencies on products that mask your symptoms? Let’s support our body’s own ability to achieve optimal health and build self-sufficiency rather than dependency on any products. In Ayurveda, this is best done with the knowledge of your Body Type. Each of us have a mixture of the qualities of Kapha, Pitta or Vata. Our Guest Dr. Shekhar is an ayurvedic doctor who was classically trained in India and has been practicing and teaching Ayurveda worldwide since 1988. He is the Founder/Director of Ojas, an Ayurveda Wellness Center in PA. Founder & Medical Director at the International Institute of Integrative Medicine. Founder/President of the: Association of Ayurvedic Professionals of North America (AAPNA) Today we are discussing our body types with the intention to teach some helpful tips to help you balance your body, based on your body type.
