In this episode, Ruth explore the relationship between our beliefs and our physical and emotional well-being. We'll start by asking some thought-provoking questions about our personal relationship with the higher power. Do we feel angry with God? Do we feel worthy of love and forgiveness? Are we spiritual but not religious? These questions may seem simple, but they are powerful indicators of our mental and emotional state. If we harbor anger towards God or struggle with feelings of unworthiness, it can lead to stress, anxiety, and even physical health problems. On the other hand, if we have a positive and healthy relationship with our beliefs, it can lead to feelings of peace, hope, and joy, which can have a positive impact on our physical and emotional well-being. So whether you're a believer, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, join us as we explore the fascinating and complex relationship between faith and the body. Play Episode Listen Later Mar 22, 2023 22:49

In this episode of 'Your Body Advocate Podcast' Ruth discussed the fascinating topic of "Neck and Communication" and provide you with some tips and massages for your neck. The neck is an incredibly important part of our body, and it plays a crucial role in facilitating communication between the brain and the rest of the body. This is because the neck contains the spinal cord, which acts as the main communication pathway between the brain and the body. The spinal cord is protected by the cervical vertebrae, which are stacked on top of each other and are responsible for supporting the head and neck. When we think of communication, we often think of speaking and listening, but the neck also communicates non-verbally through body language. The position of our neck can convey a lot about our emotions and intentions. For example, a tense or raised neck can signal stress or defensiveness, while a relaxed and lowered neck can signal openness and receptivity. However, our neck is prone to tension and stiffness, especially with the amount of time we spend sitting and staring at screens. This can lead to headaches, poor posture, and even more severe problems such as herniated discs or nerve damage. Check this video about some self-massage for your neck: https://youtu.be/XJPMzFqQTWo

Episode 44: Five Ways To Heal The Head

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 8, 2023 13:11

Five Ways To Help Your Head Today I'm talking about 5 ways to help head issues and a few ways to look at head pain differently. Is your headache just a “normal” headache? Or is your body trying to tell you something? Here are 5 kinds of head issues: Headache #1: The Low Headband Head Pain “Normal” headache with pain that follows the line of pain like a band around your head: All the way around your head and face Covering your eyes Above your ears Along your temples Including your occiput area (where your skull meets your neck) What this COULD mean: This area can include tension and stress from wearing “Rose-colored glasses”, which means that you aren't looking at a situation in a realistic state. Instead, you may be seeing a situation more positive than it actually is. For example: being in an abusive relationship: You see the person as being good for you Even though they hurt you or ignore you You make excuses for them And you stay, even though you feel deeply that you should leave Example: Staying in a bad job: You ignore the bad behavior around you You stay with poor pay and/or poor behavior for too long You make excuses for not leaving And many more examples of how we can ignore what is happening in our lives. Our Physical Response: Your mind might act like everything is fine, but your body is not happy, not safe, not willing to take this anymore, and starts to retaliate to how you ignore what is right in front of you. How your body reacts: Eyes and head/neck look away from the situation Eyes squint Jaw clamps down Stop breathing Sometimes, with chronic headaches, all the “right” things won't help. Then, when you change your circumstances, your headache magically goes away. It's not always this easy, and not always related to your emotional environment, but pay attention to your daily surroundings and how your BODY is responding to this environment. Gets Worse When You Are Ready To Heal: When your body feels like it has the support it needs, then your headaches (or other pain) could get worse. This is a great sign that you can, in fact, get better. But, this cycle is often misunderstood. Headpain #2: Jaw Pain When we clench our jaw or grind our teeth, this can cause headaches, neck pain, and of course, jaw pain. How our body reacts: When angry, we can tighten the jaw When thinking and concentrating, we can tighten the jaw Jaw tight = better thinking How to relax your jaw, massage it like it shows in this video. Headache #3: Eye Pain Our eyes are over used and need some TlC. Massage for eye pain in this video! Do a cross current point hold on areas of pain: Right occiput (under skull @ neck) with Left eye point, inside the left eye socket Left occiput with right eye point, inside the right eye socket Put pressure on both Then press one, then the other Teeter on them, with pressure on one, off the other, and switch Headache #4: Sinus Pain This is for pain in the sinus cavity that comes up through the face areas, like the cheek bones and around our nose and eyes. Massage around the cheek bones Press down on points along the cheek bones Find tender spots and keep pressure on those points for 10-30 seconds Don't cause too much pain Tapping on the cheek bones, finger bent, hit the knuckle with your other finger Headache #5: Occiput Pain If you have pain on the back and bottom of your skull where the skull meets the neck, you can try some of these techniques to stop the pain: Gently press finger-tips up underneath the skull Rock your neck back to get the most pressure on this area Don't hurt yourself, or cause too much pain Stay steady on a point for 10 seconds, then release pressure and repeat Bonus: Ear Pain When you are having an ear infection, ear pain, too much ear wax, hearing issues, try these ideas: - Place forefingers into the ear, just barely, and resting just above the ear lobe. With the pressure of holding a chip without cracking it, pull very gently and slowly Pull down towards your feet Pull long enough to feel it pulling inside your ear Release gently and carefully

Episode 42: Stress-Free Goal Setting - Keep Your Body in Mind

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2023 17:29

Stress-Free Goal Setting: Keep Your Body in Mind In today's episode, we look at some common ways we respond to goal setting, and focus more on how our BODY respond to Goal Setting. Do you get overwhelmed by thinking about the year to come? When you have these thoughts, how does your body respond? The process of setting goals can be stressful on the body, but these signals are often dismissed or ignored, and we end up making the plans the same way we always have. If this happens to you, try to notice how your body responds to this type of stressful stimulus. When you plan which goals to focus on, do you: Get fidgety? Squint your eyes? Bite down hard? Hold you breath? Avoid the goal planning process all together? Procrastinate doing the few things that will push you forward in your business, sport, relationship or health? One of my Coaches & mentors, Selena Soo, had some great advice at our last mastermind: Do less, but better! This is one of my mottos for 2023, and I'm adding it to everything. Make this year's goal setting less stressful by doing less, but doing it better! 3 Ways to Make Your Goal Setting Less Stressful on Your Body: Include your body in the planning process Notice if your body responds to certain plans & modify the plan Develop a "Self-Awareness Routine" 1. Include your body in the planning process Move your body before, during and after you start planning. Also, plan to be hydrated, well fed and rested when you have a big planning session, test or other event coming up. Just like an elite athlete preparing for a big event, consider how your body can make or break how effective & efficient you can be. Stretch while standing or sitting Roll your shoulders forward and back Take some deep breaths Rotate your wrists & ankles Hold onto a couch, chair, counter, lean back to stretch your back 2. Notice if Your Body Responds to Certain Plans & Modify the Plan An art of "listening" to our body, to the intuition it has to share with us, has been ignored for a long time. But, consider it a long lost way of communicating with ourselves that we are desperately missing. How do you listen to your body? There are many ways and each person has unique ways their body communicates, but here are a few basic ways to start listening while you are goal planning: Does your stomach get tight with certain goals Do certain goals or ideas create a reaction? (some of these you don't even recognize as a reaction anymore...) Do you pace? Do you avoid certain goals or conversations about these goals? (money? starting a business? travel? weight loss?) 3. Develop a "Self-Awareness Routine" There are morning routines, exercise routines, but try to create a "self-awareness routine". Notice your body, how it is when it's "happy", "calm", "angry", "anxious" What does your body do for each category? Now, create a routine of noticing: Stop & be still What do you notice in your hands, face, gut, chest? Can you match a thought with a body reaction?

How did your body do in 2022? Let's review your year from your body's point of view, looking at several categories, rating those categories, celebrating them and considering ways to improve each for 2023. Where can you find celebrations, lessons you learned, places to improve, or ah ha moments you didn't realize before. Your body thanks you. :) First Step: Break into categories, your body-year-review. Consider the areas that you were working on, or most aware of last year. Below are the categories I used. Categories: Pain Fitness Sleep Self Care Self Talk Communication Love & Kindness Second Step: Rate yourself in each category based on how your body would rate these areas like this: What can I celebrate? What have I learned? What shifts would be best for my body this year? Third Step: Take any criticisms, negative thoughts or and turn them into positive sentences, one by one. Examples: I didn't lose enough weight this year. I love my body and can't wait to find healthy ways to serve it with food and movement in 2023. I didn't concentrate enough, get enough done or meet my goals this year. I love my enthusiasm which allows the ability to overcommit & I am excited to practice better boundaries and doing less, but better. Last Step: Acknowledge the wonder and positivity in your world, and give thanks. Planning for 2023 is always helpful. Listen to next weeks episode for some powerful ideas. Setting Your Body Up for Success in 2023: 1. Put Breathing First! Use your breath to relax, destress, take a moment, not scream, have better concentration, pray. 2. Set an Intension about how you want your Body to Feel this year. 3. Add Kindness from yourself to yourself. Each time you do something kind for someone or something, use this as a reminder to do something kind for yourself. What do you think about these steps for this year? Thanks for listening today! HOW TO SET OUR BODY UP FOR SUCCESS The knees are very important in all mobility but also in correlation with our gut/low back and our neck. These three areas work together, and if one is injured or struggling in some manner, one of the other 2 can also show signs of stress. These three areas are called "the Earth triad" and hold grounding in the body. Here are 3 ways to Setting Up Your Knees For Success: 1. Touch: Rub your knees, one at a time, to get and keep them warm. Also, envelop them and hold nice, warm pressure on your knee. Try to feel your pulse from the knee--this takes practice. Send them healing energy and love from your hands, then repeat the process on the other knee. 2. Foam "stick" rolling: This is a hand-held roller that is just like a rolling pin, but a bit skinnier and has a softer coating on the roller. Use this gently on all sides of the muscles around your knees to create relief and comfort. 3. Movement & stretching: move your knees to your chest in the morning before you get out of bed, then pull your toes to your nose to stretch those lower leg muscles and to create some blood flow and stretching before you put any weight on your ankles or knees in the morning. Also stretch all the muscles leading into your knees to support their continued health. Problem solving for your knees: The knees have to do with grounding in the body and work well with the gut/low back and neck. You might also find hints to help your knees in the opposite elbow or shoulder. Right shoulder for the left knee. Left shoulder and elbow for the right hip, knee and ankle. Now 12 years later she's laser focused on bringing delicious snacks full of real ingredients to the world while creating jobs for adults with autism. BeeFree creates a better for you, snack-able granola called Warrior Mix. It is made with simple, plant-based ingredients, lovingly created by people with autism. BeeFree evolved from my desire to bake tasty gluten and dairy-free treats for our son. Warrior Mix is honey-sweetened and plant-base and free from (gluten, grain, added sugar, preservatives, dairy, soy), and a convenient snack. We believe real ingredients matter and creating food that fuels the body and mind while providing jobs for people with autism is just the right thing to do. "My start down the culinary trail was not my original plan. I graduated with a degree in fashion marketing but when my son was diagnosed with autism, I found a gluten free diet, and then went on the hunt for gf food our whole family actually liked the taste of. This journey brought me to food creation and finding a love for feeding my family and community clean, real food and creating jobs for other adults with autism along the way." Partnership with Fueled For School BeeFree was founded out of need for my son to eat gluten free food that actually tasted good to help his overall wellbeing. Once I was forced to pay attention, I realized most food products being sold were full of preservatives and additives the average consumer had no idea were there. At the same time a close friend, Kristina Trusty, a teacher in the area, founded a nonprofit to directly impact the food insecurity she was seeing in our school district. Now we are committed to donating 2% of our sales each month to her organization. Initially, I told him no, but after reflecting on his purpose and tenacity, we came to an agreement and we've been working together ever since. In this podcast, we discuss what dedications means to an athlete trying to "hone their craft" and what giving back looks like through dedication and philanthropy. Manny and I have discussed so many things. But when you boil it down, he strives for a 4 point approach to success: Believe in yourself - the first person who has to back you up is you. You can achieve great things if you begin believing that you are capable. Work Hard - You have to put in the work. Whether you are staying in shape or texting people, you have to work on your success. That means networking, staying top of mind and keeping ahead of deadline. Hone your craft - Be prepared for what you want. If you are going after a scholarship, you better be in shape and ready to compete. Visualize - See yourself communicating with your opponent. See yourself performing. See what it looks like first in your head to be ready for what is coming for real. In this episode we discuss cleansing a space in your home or house using a smug stick, aromatherapy and prayer. First let's talk about using aromatherapy and prayer to cleanse your spaces of negative energy and past failures. To let go and re-center so that your work space or your sleep space or your whole home can be a place of focus, positive thoughts and energetic resources. I do this for people so reach out to me if this is something you are interested in. We also do this for our home or when we are utilizing new spaces. In my kit, I keep a few key items. Everything is contained on a plate that was a gift from a dear friend of mine. Bringing items that are meaningful or have positive memories can help bring good energy to what you are doing. Cleaning Kit: 1) Sage smudge stick. In New Mexico, there is a long tradition of Native Americans using sage to cleanse holy spaces or to ward off bad spirits. 2) Charcoal incense burner, which includes a ceramic bowl and a dish or tray. 3) Frankincense and Myrrh date back before the Wise Men to the Ancient Egyptians and has been used in temples for its intense fragrance and clarifying power. 4) Lavender oil from Santa Fe Lavender. 5) Holy Water 6) Holy Dirt from Chimayo. 7) Paper to list meaningful words you would like the space to represent. I like to write a prayer specifically to the room or house that we are cleansing. Ignite Frankincense and Myrrh; add drop of Lavender oil (this will produce a lot of smoke) and ignite sage. Say your words and then your prayer as you waft smoke around the room. (Don't rush. You probably don't want rushing energy in your living spaces.) Give thanks to God and move on to the next room. In this week's episode of Your Body Advocate, I talk about how to create the best team of health professionals to work together on your behalf and make the best team possible for you. The Western Medicine model has helped millions of people and have many brilliant minds involved to come up with amazing ways to help people. To make the most of this medical model, these 2 steps are obvious, but can help you make the most of your team: Ask questions: write down the questions so you are sure to have them ready at the right time. Communicate how you respond to your health professional's treatments and suggestions. When you have gone through the Western Medicine model and you are still struggling, in pain, or just don't feel well, here are some options to help. Look for some other support in your community. Because so many of my clients ask me for names or alternative options to feel better, yet have never heard of some of the treatments I suggest, I wanted to go over a few today. First, I will list the treatments with the dictionary definition. Next, I will give a few personal examples. Here are 4 ideas of treatments to try: Acupuncture Chiropractic Care Ayurveda Homeopathy Acupuncture: A system of integrative medicine that involves pricking the skin orr tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental and emotional conditions. Originating in ancient China, acupuncture is now widely practiced in the West. Chiropractic Care: A system of integrative medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to house other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs. Ayurveda: Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine that is the traditional medicine of India and seeks to treat and integrate body, mind and spirit using a comprehensive holistic approach, especially by emphasizing diet, herbal remedies, exercise, meditation, breathing and physical therapy. Homeopathy: The medical treatment using cures founded on resemblances; the theory and it's practice that disease is cured by remedies which produce on a healthy person effects similar to the symptoms of the complaint under which the patient suffers, the remedies being usually administered in minute doses. These are just 4 basic alternative treatments you could try to get a different perspective to your issues if you are not having any luck with Western Medicine. Episode 6: How to Find God In Your Body In today's episode I talk about how to find God in your body and some ideas to find satisfying answers to this common question. Many people ask about this: how do they find God, the Holy Spirit, The Higher Power, etc in their body. I also touch on how this question comes up for those suffering from addiction, with a few tips, but also a mention to listen to the podcast dedicated just to tips for those going through addiction. If you are asking the question "How do I find God in my body", you could start with these questions to help you start your quest: Why are you asking? Has something changed in your life? Has something happened? Have you felt God, The Holy Spirit, The Higher Power in your body before? What expectations about feeling God do you have NOW that you feel you are missing? I discuss all of these questions a little more to give examples of how this question can be thought about. In this week's episode, I talk about how to listen, read and respond to your body's secret insights. In episode 2 we talked about your "Body Story" and how to write down all the things that have happened to your body. When memories of what your body has been through start to show up later, in a hour, a day, a week or longer, these are great clues to what your body has been keeping secret from you. Also, once these feelings and memories do show up in your memory, I believe that your body is trying to say that you now have the support, energy, time or other parts of your daily environment that make healing of this "secret" possible now that was not possible to heal from in the past. Paying attention to what your body can tell you, and when, can help you solve mysteries of pain or tension or angst you didn't understand before. Self awareness is a big part of being able to listen and figure out what your body is trying to communicate. Links: The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael Singer
