On this episode of the Healthy, Wealthy, and Smart podcast, Dr. Jennifer Stevens-Lapsley and Dr. Kory Zimney, underscored the crucial role clinicians play in influencing the APTA research agenda. They emphasized that clinicians should be invested in the research agenda as it directly impacts their practice and the well-being of their patients. Here are key takeaways from the episode on how clinicians can actively contribute to the APTA research agenda: 1. Data Collection: Clinicians are encouraged to start gathering outcomes data in their clinical settings. This data serves as a valuable resource for addressing research inquiries and refining clinical practices. By systematically collecting data on patient outcomes, clinicians can bolster the evidence base, guiding decision-making at both individual patient levels and broader research endeavors. 2. Questioning: Clinicians are uniquely positioned to identify knowledge gaps and areas requiring further research. By posing questions based on their clinical experiences, clinicians can help shape research priorities and initiate meaningful research projects. Cultivating a curious mindset can lead to the formulation of research questions that tackle real-world clinical challenges. 3. Collaboration with Researchers: Collaboration between clinicians and researchers is pivotal for advancing the field of physical therapy. Clinicians can collaborate with researchers by sharing clinical insights, participating in research studies, and engaging in discussions on research findings. Through joint efforts, clinicians and researchers can ensure that research remains relevant, practical, and directly applicable to clinical settings. 4. Networking and Relationship Building: Clinicians are urged to network with researchers, academic institutions, and other healthcare professionals to foster collaborations and knowledge exchange. Establishing relationships with researchers can provide clinicians with opportunities to contribute to research projects, access resources, and stay abreast of the latest research developments in physical therapy. 5. Promoting Evidence-Based Practice: Physical therapists are an evidence-based profession who rely on research to inform their clinical interventions. By actively engaging with the APTA research agenda and participating in research endeavors, clinicians can enhance the quality of care they deliver and contribute to the advancement of the profession. In this episode of the Female Athlete Nutrition podcast, I talk with physical therapist and Ironman triathlete Dr Caitlin Alexander. Having grown up as a dancer since the age of 3 and getting a taste of triathlon as a teenager, we hear how Caitlin was drawn back into endurance sports post college and fell in love with Ironman triathlons. She shares her quick progression in the sport as an amateur age group athlete, from total beginner to now preparing the upcoming Ironman Age Group World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, in just a few years. She reminds listeners that early specialization is not always best: it's never too late to try something new and reach a high level. Caitlin talks about the training it takes to complete an Ironman: multiple sessions a day, swimming, biking and running. We explore the nutrition required to handle high training volumes, as well as on race day, based around carbohydrates and electrolytes. Practicing fueling and hydration in training is key to race day performance, and this often requires a lot of trial and error with different products because everyone's needs and preferences are unique. Caitlin highlights how some nutrition mistakes prompted her to really dial in her approach to fueling and hydration. We talk more about hydration, understanding your sweat, and preventing GI distress. Caitlin shares how personal experiences with injury led to a major career change, going back to school to become a physical therapist after initially working in the music and performing arts industry. We discuss how varied her role as a physical therapist is and touch on some of her specialities: bike fitting, running gait analysis, and dry needling, We discuss how our own athletic experiences allow us to better relate to clients; Caitlin explains how her background in triathlon makes her more successful as a PT. We dive into running gait analysis for injury prevention and performance, centering around optimizing cadence and stride length. Caitlin and I discuss dry needling and electrical stimulation, what it is, and how it can play a role in injury recovery. Caitlin emphasizes that manual therapies like dry needling are not permanent injury fixes because they don't address the root cause, load the tissue, or re-educate the body on proper movement patterns: effective recovery requires a multidimensional approach that addresses both the mental and physical sides. Follow Caitlin and all she does on Instagram and Twitter @caitalexander Caitlin's Official Bio: Caitlin Alexander, PT, DPT, CAFS is a physical therapist, multisport coach, Ironman triathlete based out of Boulder, Colorado. Hey Gang! Today, I am so excited to get to sit down with the newest coach and head of Yoga and Strength for the Badass Lady Gang, Amanda Kerpius! Head of Yoga and Strength for the Badass Lady Gang, Amanda Kerpius is a certified Yoga Therapist and Yoga Teacher, Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Running Coach, 10x marathon finisher, Boston Marathon Qualifier, and new mom! During undergraduate school, Amanda performed at football and basketball games as a Colorado State “Golden Pom'' dancer. With her midsection constantly exposed to thousands of sports fans, she started running as a way to help improve her perceived body-shape. After graduation, Amanda moved to NYC to pursue a career in dance. She ran and ran and ran convinced that having a smaller body would help her career. What she didn't know is that she was building a physical and mental endurance that would carry her through her trials of adulthood: career changes, college degrees, marriage, divorce, financial debt, pregnancy, and now, motherhood. Running is Amanda's meditation and when Amanda feels most connected with her breath, thoughts, and Self. Running is when she feels most alive and she knows she isn't alone. Through her teaching and therapeutic work, Amanda seeks to help others continue this magical journey of life with endurance of mind and body. First a trained dancer, Amanda practiced, performed, and choreographed dance for 26 years, lending her lifetime of body awareness newfound credibility through a yoga form that is both rigorous and healing to the physical and emotional self. Amanda graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Swedish Institute's massage therapy program in 2017 and shortly thereafter received her License in Massage Therapy. That year she also completed a yearlong study of functional movement science with the Gray Institute making her a Fellow of Applied Functional Science. In May 2021, she completed an 850-hour yoga therapy certification with Prema Yoga Institute and became a certified yoga therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She received her first 200-hour yoga teacher training certification in 2012 and has accumulated nearly 3,000 teaching hours since then. As she trains for her 11th marathon, Amanda specializes in and has a passion for helping endurance athletes perform better and experience deep, nourishing recovery with yoga-based functional movement, functional massage therapy and game-changing yoga wisdom that's designed to ignite the mind and body to achieve it's best. Dr. Jennifer Lee received her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri and is the Owner of L2E Physical Therapy in Peoria, Arizona. She began her career in an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic, focusing on injuries and imbalances of the musculoskeletal system. This led her to completion of a Fellowship in Applied Functional Science through the Gray Institute, where she studied the 3-dimensional connection of the human body specific to the musculoskeletal system and learned to better ask and answer the question, “WHY” someone would experience pain and dysfunction, compared to our traditional medical model which focuses on the “WHAT” is hurting and symptom resolution. Later studies at the Barral Institute taught her that the question, “Why” cannot always be answered by addressing the musculoskeletal system, as the true root cause of some patients' pain stems from restrictions or previous trauma to the nervous system, cranium, visceral organs/fascia, or is rooted in emotional trauma stored in the body. The work to determine the true root cause of someone's suffering, particularly chronic pain, anxiety or emotionally-rooted pain often requires more time and a softer, quieter environment than is typical of the outpatient orthopedic clinical setting. Each of her patients receives an hour of 1-on-1 care, with the goal of letting the patient's body be in a safe environment where it can communicate what it needs in order to function at optimal efficiency. Her passion is to create healing and to incorporate the totality of an individual's physical, mental, and emotional experience and to allow each patient the time and care they deserve in order to understand the story of their bodies and find the answers as to why they are experiencing pain.

This week JC and AW have a great conversation with Dr. Gary Gray. Gary is a PT, founder of The Gray Institute and inventor of Applied Functional Science. Gary's work has been influential in the movement professionals that Adam & Jessica are. Garys teachings are at the core of The Movement Guild approach to movement and working with the individual. It was a great conversation.
Dr. Caitlin Alexander is a physical therapist at Build Sports Performance Lab & Physical Therapy in Boulder, Colorado with a certification in Applied Functional Science. She's a certified triathlon coach, running coach, and has experience working with elite-level athletes. She's also an incredible athlete herself! Caitlin has qualified for the Kona World Ironman Championships and is a category 3 cyclist. In our conversation today, we’re talking about what happens when you have an injury for a very long time. You see, our movement patterns live in our brain. Your brain is what controls how you run and if your brain learns over time to compensate for an injury, you’ll develop all new movement patterns - and they won’t be ideal. Finally, Caitlin and I discuss: the origins of disrupted motor patterns how these movement patterns become ingrained in our brain the process required to relearn optimal movement patterns fun Q&A! Resources & Links: Follow Caitlin on Instagram Mobility training for runners Dynamic warm up exercises Jay Dicharry on injury-free running Injury prevention email course Thank you Elemental Labs A big thanks to Elemental Labs for their support of this episode! They make electrolyte drinks for athletes and low-carb folks with no sugar, artificial ingredients, or colors. They're also offering free product: just pay for shipping and you can get their sample pack including 8 packets of citrus, raspberry, unflavored, and orange salt varieties. Elemental Labs' products have some of the highest sodium concentrations that you can find. Anybody who runs a lot knows that sodium, as well as other electrolytes like magnesium and potassium, are essential to our performance and how we feel throughout the day. The citrus flavor has quickly become my favorite and I’m drinking one a day now to help me get enough fluids in our dry Colorado air. It’s tasty and delicious and I find that I’m not peeing every 45 minutes throughout the day, which might be an indication I wasn’t eating enough sodium. There’s now mounting evidence that higher sodium intake levels are not unhealthy – and athletes need substantially more than your typical sedentary person. Of course, ask your doctor if you’re worried. But for those athletes running outside in the heat, an electrolyte replacement makes a lot of sense. I’m encouraged by the fact that Navy SEAL teams, Olympic teams, and pro athletes have started using Elemental electrolyte supplements to improve their performance. Learn more about what they do at their website (and don't forget to get your free sample pack!).
Caitlin Alexander, PT, DPT, CAFS is a physical therapist, multisport coach, and VDOT Certified Run Coach based out of Boulder, Colorado. Episode 068: Before you can help basketball players in the weight room, you need a movement assessment that will quickly show a player's strengths and deficits. Dr. Gary Gray, founder of the Gray Institute and creator of 3DMAPS, joined me on the podcast to share how in just 6 movements you can assess 66 vital motions of the human body. Dr. Gary Gray is the smartest movement scientist in the world and I'm grateful to call him a friend and mentor. I remember when I first got exposed to Dr. Gray's work… It was 2004 and we’d just started U-District Physical Therapy. My business partners told me that I had to watch this series called the Functional Video Digest, so I went home and popped the tape into the VCR.I was immediately in awe of Gary's ability to see and explain how the body was one big chain reaction. He effortlessly described how the foot influenced the knee and the hip and the spine, and how the spine can influence the foot. That one moment started my journey of studying the Gray Institute. Since then I’ve completed their 40-week fellowship programs and was lucky enough to be a facilitator for the GIFT program the last couple years. I’ve also taken their Functional Soft Tissue Transformation course, their Foot/Ankle Specialization and completed their Certification in Applied Functional Science. Today I got to pick Gary’s brain on how to do movement assessments with basketball players. Now you know I’m a little biased, but I can’t say enough good things about their 3DMAPS certification, which stands for Three-Dimensional Movement Assessment and Performance System. Please know I’m not part of any affiliate program and don’t make any money if you sign up for 3DMAPS. I’m just promoting it because I use some form of the assessment or performance system every single week with my players. I can confidently say that Gary and his work has made the single biggest impact on my training philosophy as a strength & conditioning coach. Listen to this week's podcast on Movement Assessment for Basketball Players and learn:The test is the exercise and the exercise is the testHow to quickly assess your athletes every weekWhat makes a movement assessment functionalWhy assigning players a number or score isn't helpfulClick HERE to listen to his son, Doug Gray, talk about Movement For BasketballInstagram @HoopCommitmentTwitter @HoopCommitmentFacebook HoopCommitmentWebsite HoopCommitment.com
Key Takeaways Postpartum preparation starts years before the pregnancy even begins. Getting the right nutrients will not only lead to a healthier pregnancy but will lessen postpartum effects. Furthermore, exercises that strengthen fascia will lead to faster recovery after the baby’s birth. This should start as early as two years before the pregnancy itself. When postpartum conditions last for many years, it’s important to get to the root cause. This often means looking at the gut as a source of stress. Amy finds that once gut issues are cleared, other issues like anxiety, energy levels, and appetite improve. Postpartum conditions can last for years after pregnancy. That’s a scary thought. But it doesn’t have to be this way. With the right information and actions, recovery from pregnancy can happen smoother and faster. If you’re pregnant, already have children, or are even thinking about having a baby someday, this is an important episode for you. About Amy Slater Amy is a mom of two sets of twins, a women's health coach, a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, and a passionate advocate for women speaking their needs to feel like their whole self again. She works with moms 1 year to 30 years postpartum to help them reconnect with their core and pelvic floor from the inside out using an integrated approach. Amy has both a personal health recovery story as well as extensive professional training. She has a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics, a Fellowship in Applied Functional Science, a Practitioner of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, 20 years of personal training experience, and over 1,000 hours of continuing education in women's health and human movement. Amy loves to run, cycle, lift, hike, swim, garden, and play with her kids. She lives in Holly Springs, NC with her husband, two 9-year-old boys, two 5-year-old girls, and her golden lab Judge. It’s Never Too Soon to Prepare Amy explains that proper postpartum recovery needs to be preemptive. In fact, it should start as soon as you are preparing for the pregnancy itself. Supplying your body with the nutrients it needs and getting the right exercise, will not only position you for what’s to come, but it’s also a crucial part of your baby’s health. This also means properly exercising the whole body, particularly the core. This promotes the strength and integrity of your fascia, the tissue that structures all your muscles. Healthy fascia will prevent the loss of stability and strength that so many women experience postpartum. Addressing Postpartum for the Long-Term Although few talk about it, postpartum issues can last for many years. Many of these conditions go untreated, making them worse. Amy describes why it’s never too late to start getting your health back. She also explains how addressing issues that often reside in the gut leads to better overall health in mothers. Most of all, you need to give yourself time. The amount of time will be different for every mom. Don’t compare yourself to others. Instead, focus on your own journey and what you need. Have you experienced postpartum issues years after pregnancy? Leave a comment on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode How her own postpartum experience led Amy to help others [5:40] How to prepare for pregnancy to lessen the severity of postpartum conditions [11:30] The barriers that prevent many women from seeking the help that they need [19:05] Training the core to protect fascial integrity [23:09] Why postpartum conditions often persist for many years and how to address them [30:53] The best support for optimal postpartum care [43:10] Quotes “Diastasis is not so much about closing the gap, so to speak, but also narrowing the depth and improving the body’s ability to tension across various lines of force.” [8:31] “Moms need more than just some movement piece because the stress component and the hormonal dysregulation in postpartum is massive. A lot of times it doesn’t just evaporate. You need to have intervention.” [10:35] “If you arm yourself with the things that you need for postpartum and forget half the stuff that you think the baby needs… you’re going to have a much better experience with what you need going into the postpartum period.” [47:18] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! Most training programs focus on simply building strength. That’s an important part, but it ignores crucial parts of the human condition. We don’t naturally move the way we often train. But what if we trained based on how we move? That would lead to more balanced strength and reduce the likelihood of common injuries. About Rocky Snyder With nearly thirty years of experience as a trainer, Rocky Snyder has a firm grasp on the connection between strength and mobility. Rocky is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, an NSCA-Certified Personal Trainer, Certified in Applied Functional Science, NASM-Corrective Exercise Specialist, a licensed US Soccer Coach, and a USA Weightlifting Coach. Training For Dynamic Movement In today’s episode, Rocky explains the need to think not just about how we train, but why we train the way we do. There is a danger in taking for granted the way we exercise. Most workouts don’t actually consider the way that you and the population as a whole actually move. Rocky advocates training based on how we move outside of the gym, rather than just on strength for strength’s sake. The Role of Asymmetrical Movements By taking the history of how we train into consideration, Rocky sees that we’ve been ignoring the elements of natural movement. This has led to an increase in injuries. When we train with asymmetrical natural movements in mind, we become more limber and less likely to get hurt. By utilizing unilateral and contralateral training, the spine and joints are unlocked so that we can freely move in all directions with strength. How can you train to support your movements outside of the gym? Leave a message in the comments on the episode page! In this episode The need to consider why we train the way we do [2:10] Focusing your training on balance [4:50] Techniques for supporting supple movements in athletes [9:53] Three principles to include when designing a training program [16:55] Important considerations for training under load [27:30] Building muscle as a protective organ to increase longevity [34:50] Quotes “Training intelligently is actually stepping back and looking at the approach to training that we’re taking right now where an individual, as well as the population, is in regards to their ability to move and designing a program based on that information.” [4:02] “The way in which we’re training our athletes is to be like a very strong tree; to be rooted into the ground and support tremendous weight up above instead of being a subtle tiger.” [9:18] “There’s a place for kettlebells, barbells, and dumbbells. But there’s also a place for owning movement in your body that will regulate a greater amount of strength and performance.” [16:42] “The purpose here is to try to unlock your potential by giving you movements that actually train the whole body to perform and not just one joint. And the effect is immediate!” [45:54] Key Takeaways Most workout regimes are based on bilateral action. But this is not how we normally move. By focusing on asymmetrical split-stance exercises, you will both improve strength and increase natural balance. This will allow you to move freely and avoid injury. A comprehensive workout needs to be a combination of strength training with dynamic movements. To ignore one part of the picture is to create a potentially harmful imbalance. On this episode JD Boudreaux is joined by co-host Brian Soignier, as the duo visits with one of Brian's mentors, Dr. Gary Gray. Gary received his initial education as a physical therapist in the mid-1970s. He immediately pursued additional training as an athletic trainer, personal trainer, and as a strength and conditioning coach. Realizing the common thread of creating transformational environments to enhance the lives of others being the science of movement, he developed the discipline of Applied Functional Science®. With his ongoing passion and mission of learning and sharing more, and with the goal of educating, empowering, and encouraging others through an appreciation of the wonderfully and fearfully made human body, Dr. Gray established the Gray Institute. Gary has been married to his 7th grade sweetheart (Cindi) since 1976 and has been blessed with two sons and daughter-in-loves (Brad and Shallon, Doug and Valerie) and six grandchildren (Denyon, Aryah, Calyx, Zion, Xyler, and Lawson). In this episode, Gary discusses a variety of topics including how he defines an athlete, his rationale when treating individual patients, his vision for the future of the physical therapy profession, and how he would like to be remembered. His tremendous experience combined with his vast knowledge of human movement provides many pearls of wisdom for all audience members throughout this episode. In many ways, Rocky embodies the California stereotype. Well known in the community, Rocky is an avid surfer and fitness buff with a studio in the heart of the world renown Pleasure Point surf area. There early risers are greeted by the sweet smells of the ocean while they workout in one of Rocky’s many group training classes and hear the latest conditions when Rocky makes his call into KSCO and KPIG to broadcast the Surf and Ski report. It doesn’t take long for this image of Rocky to come crashing down. The Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtic banners and license plates hanging on the walls betray his New England roots and belie his California image. Previous musings about what local high school Rocky graduated from are replaced by questions about how a hardcore New England boy morphed into California fitness-surfer dude. As with many aspects of Rocky, it’s a colorful story. https://rockysfitnesscenter.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/executiveathletes/support

Tools For Well Being addresses the interconnection of Mind, Body and Heart, created from the sciences of Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Behavioral Psychology, Energy Medicine and Applied Functional Science focusing on removing the physical, mental and emotional habits that produce and maintain dysfunctions, compensations and injury, presenting the possibilities for you to reorient your belief systems as much as your body. Tools for Well Being is an integrative plan concentrating on removing compensations by restoring authentic, functional, 3 dimensional (Mind, Body and Heart) movements that resolve injuries and compensations and strives to create unity of mind, body and heart. This multi-dimensional approach addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms, engaging both client and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership empowering patients and practitioners to achieve the highest expression of health. It is an evolution in the practice of health care that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. We are always Mind, Body and Heart. Restoring that Unity gives you the tools to carry on and make the healing and change you seek. You can contact Bob by visiting his website www.bbdinfo.com Resources:

Dr. Gray goes deep on the topic of human functional movement and how The Gray Institute differentiates themselves from the competition with 3DMAPS® (3D Movement Assessment and Performance System). Dr. Gary Gray received his initial education as a physical therapist in the mid-1970s. Applied Functional Science (AFS) is a unique approach that uses the collaboration of the physical, biological, and behavioral science used to treat patients as a whole. AFS operates under the assumption that the practitioner/coach already has a sound understanding of the basic foundational movement patterns. Think of the effects that gravity, ground reaction forces, mass, and momentum all play on the everyday individual. Now think about how much that amplifies when you consider an athlete, especially a basketball player. In this week's show, Julian sits down with Athletic Performance Coach Xavier Brown to discuss his passion for the game of basketball and how he got into the world of sports performance; The biggest issue when coaching youth basketball players; AFS and what it is, the philosophies AFS embodies, and best of all, how he applies it to his athletes and everyday average joes.Get the notebooks ready!Follow on social media for more free content:Xavier Brown:IG: @thesportzgeekJulian Lo Casto:IG: @julianlocastoTwitter: @JulianLoCasto

Applied Functional Science In this recast podcast from 2016 for Gray Institute, Dr. Gary Gray talks with Dr. David Tiberio, Dean of the GIFT program at Gray Institute, about What is Applied Functional Science®?
This is a recast of the very first podcast for Gray Institute, Dr. Gary Gray and Dr. David Tiberio discuss Chain Reaction, one of the critical principles of Applied Functional Science®. Listen to the 25 minute podcast by two innovative doctors of physical therapy:
We all know that we need to move our bodies and get to the gym, but it's often the motivation (or lack thereof) that gets in the way. I've always stood by the fact that if you're going to improve your health, you have to have a deeper motivation than shedding a few pounds or fitting into those skinny jeans hanging out in the back of your closet. (which, by the way, hanging on to clothes that don't fit you will likely only harm your self esteem and keep you from making positive change, but I digress) There's no better person to talk to about this than my dear friend Rhonda Trollman! Rhonda is a Certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor, Precision Nutrition level 1 Certified Coach, and a Fellow of Applied Functional Science, and most recently certified to work with Breast Cancer Survivors, who has spent the past 10 years working one on one with people in a Physical Therapy environment. Rhonda's passion lies with helping people find ways to enjoy exercise and movement. Whether recovering from injuries or dealing with chronic pain such as arthritis, to overcoming exercise boredom or years of being sedentary, her goal is to assist people in finding the best program that works for them. She has the pleasure of working with individuals in unique circumstances looking to increase their physical fitness at the most basic levels that many of us take for granted, and we dive deep into this topic on this episode, and Rhonda shares some incredible stories from some of her many clients. What's inside this episode: Benefits of cardiovascular health and why poor cardio can be worse for us than smoking (this doesn't have to mean running on a treadmill, by the way!) Balancing cardio with strength training, and how to incorporate both at the same time Mixing up your training to keep motivation high and actually enjoying your workouts Starting small; don't overwhelm yourself or your body Building in accountability and momentum for success Why this goes so far beyond weight loss You're going to leave this episode touched and incredibly inspired to start making the most of the amazing body you've been given, even if it's to start in the smallest ways.
