MAVGEEKS: A Military Aircraft Obsession

Something a bit different this week, dearest MavMates! Gini and Jamie enjoyed a natter with Tony Gaunt, Business Development Executive at Martin-Baker. Informally, they're THE ejector seat people, though Tony corrects our podcast co-pilots' terminology, offers an idiot's guide to testing an escape system, walks us through one of the most hair-raising use cases of Martin-Baker's work to date and really reiterates that when his work saves one life, it saves many. GS#358fMO November 20, 2012 GSfMO#358 Terry "The Wedge Guy" Koehler, CEO of SCOR Golf joins us for 40 minutes to answer more questions submitted to SCOR Zone Short Game Academy. We've received so many great questions about improving our short game that we decided to answer 4 more questions in a full episode.   This was originally a Members Only episode that lived behind our paywall, so this is the first time it's ever been shared publically. Questions:Matthew Etter of Durham, NC: What is the recommended approach for handling "flier" lies around the green? In my area we have a lot of bermuda grasses, and when cut high there can be a lot of space between the ball and the ground. Should you still try to hit down on the ball to impart spin? It seems to me that there's no way you're going to compress the ball when it's sitting up so much, but trying to scoop the ball with an ascending blow doesn't seem like the right approach either. Any alternatives?Matt McElroy of Brentwood, NH: How do we know which scoring club to use from the sand? Are different types of sand a factor?Ron Hampel of Portland, OR I'm fairly new to golf, having taken up the game about 18 months ago. My play from tee to about 120 yards or so is really coming along (around 70-75% driving accuracy). But, what's holding my scoring back is what happens from inside 120 or so yards. My short game distance control is all over the place. Why will adding a wedge or two to my set at that end make my distances any more accurate? In other words, is my lack of consistency due to the skills of someone new to the game or incorrect club gaps?Martin Baker of Peregian Beach, Queensland Australia i still use your old wedges and listened intently to the podcast especially around the grip. I sent a photo of my glove - from the photo you may be able to work out am I holding the club too much in my hand instead of my fingers as you advocate? I was also intrigued by your comments about keeping the grip light on the club - I think this would naturally relax the forearms and therefore give a more relaxed looking swing like the professionals?Follow @golfsmarter on Instagram, X, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube for daily highlights and helpful insights from our interviews on the podcast. The number of pubs trading in Clare has fallen by more than 30% within the last two decades. A new report from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland which has just been published, shows 114 public houses have closed in this county since 2005, including 18 closures in just the last year. The bulk of the closures have been attributed to soaring costs such as utility bills, the hospitality VAT rate and alcohol excise duty, and last night industry representatives met with ministers to discuss budget supports. Martin Baker who bucked the trend of closures by renovating a derelict building to reopen the Burren Inn in Tubber along with his daughter Niamh in 2022, insists the Government needs to take decisive action on the matter to keep rural communities alive.

It saved his life, but he wasn't able to recover in a hospital because he was captured and taken straight to an Iraqi prison. This makes him the most appropriate guest to take Dan through the history of the invention of the ejector seat, how it works and what it was like to eject. Pester joins Fig and Repete to tell how he became a Naval Aviator and the challenges of flying the F-14; particularly on and off the carrier at night. This week's title comes from a play on words from the Top Gun Movie and the fact that the LSO (Landing Signal Officer) only saw one 'chute when Pester and his RIO punched out. Pester details going to AOCS, flight school, and selecting the Tomcat. He went to Miramar for the Replacement Air Group "RAG" and his fleet squadron. He also tells about why he has his callsign and raises the hair on the back of your neck as he tells how he and his RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) narrowly escaped a doomed Tomcat in the night landing pattern and earned their 'Martin-Baker' ties and silkworms. Martin-Baker is the manufacturer of the ejection seats used in the F-14. Then Pester and Fig got into some serious ball-busting before we wrapped up this week's show!

What to discuss with Horgan and Minister of Municipal Affairs

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - The Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) will be holding its 2022 convention in Whister on September 12 -16. Local governments tradionally seek interviews with high level provincial officials. The interviews can be up to 15 minutes long and cover up to 3 topics. The SRD chose their topics at the Wednesday June 15 Board meeting. Regional Director Jim Abram suggested that they talk about putting more funding into affordable housing. Cortes Island Regional Director Noba Anderson, added that there was a need for more funding for community based, or local government based, or a collaboration between social profit and local government, resilience planning. “I think we would be very well advised to support community efforts to do deep adaptive resilience planning,” she said Chair Brad Unger said he'd like to sit down with the Premier to discuss forestry and aquaculture concerns. These have been divisive issues in the past. Fish farms and forestry are two of the three economic pillars of Campbell River. Several other Directors are supportive, but there are also Directors who take a more ‘environmental' approach. Anderson proposed that this topic be dropped from the list. Mayor Martin Davis of Tahsis agreed, “We do have some fairly different viewpoints. I advocate for large scale forestry reform. I want to see pieces of land taken out of the Tree Farm License so that we can create community forests from them. That will require major policy changes, which may be coming anyway. I'm not sure if everybody would be in agreement on all that. Also I do want to see the old growth strategy push through to a good resolution.” Three of the Campbell River Directors, who have long supported the forestry and aquaculture sectors, spoke up. Colleen Evans said, “I think this board has been clear in terms of support for industries that are driving the North Island economy. We had a presentation yesterday from both the forestry and the aquaculture industry, which is science based statistical information about the impact on the island.” Charlie Cornfield declared, “I won't support a motion that doesn't address forestry, whether it is in favor or in opposition. This board is made up of many different communities and many different residents. It is important that we reference all of them and don't back away.” To which Mayor Andy Adams added, “We know that there are diverse opinions and views on the board. While we certainly respect the differences of views, once a motion is made, that is the will of the board and it moves forward. And I would, with that, ask that the question be called.” The motion before the board was whether to drop fish farms and forestry from the list of topics to be discussed with the province The hybrid virtual/in-person vote itself was confusing. It had to be taken twice, with much discussion throughout the process, but the final result was clear. Five Directors (Jim Abram, Noba Anderson, Gerald Whalley, Kevin Jules and Martin Davis)voted in favour of dropping forestry and aquaculture from the list of topics to be brought before Premier Horgan and the MInister of Municipal Affairs. Seven Directors voted against removing them: Andy Adams, Charlie Cornfield, Colleen Evans, Ron Kerr, Director Dahl, Brenda Leigh, Martin Baker and Brad Unger the board passed a motion “that a request be made with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and the Premier to discuss the following topics: Interministerial cooperation; Community based/social profit resiliency planning; and North Island forestry and aquaculture concerns.”

Aircraft designers turned world leaders in the design and manufacture of ejection and crashworthy seats, Martin-Baker has had a fascinating history. Life-long Martin-Baker man, Brian Miller, takes us through some stories from the company, including tales of its founder Sir James Martin, a ‘God-given natural engineer’, and the firm’s interwar fighter and light aircraft concepts. Later in the lecture, Miller goes on to discuss their work for NASA and ESA on lander systems. Of course, Martin-Baker is world famous for one thing, and ‘ejector seat man’ Brian Miller was not able to resist dedicating the last half of his lecture to telling his audience how the firm diversified into aircraft safety. As well as explaining how the technology changed over time, he discusses working with other aircraft firms and armed services, how they cracked the US market and discusses the programmes that he and his colleagues have worked on, including for the V-bombers, TSR2, the F-35 and various helicopters. Brian A Miller OBE FRAeS addressed a meeting organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Historical Group on 3 November 2009. The lecture is introduced by Dr Kit Mitchell FRAeS and the recording was edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS.

The row over the evisceration of Westminster Cathedral Choir has erupted again. The cathedral's excellent music administrator, Madeline Smith, has resigned from her post, accusing the choir school – which, incredibly, is the ultimate source of the threat to the choir's musical standards – of misleading parents and creating a 'toxic' atmosphere that drove out the master of music, Martin Baker.    This week's Holy Smoke gives you the background to the story and argues that the downgrading of Westminster Cathedral Choir is an act of spiritual as well as musical vandalism. There's a powerful contribution from Dr Gavin Ashenden, a former chaplain to the Queen and former chorister at Canterbury Cathedral.    The choir isn't singing at the moment, because of Covid: Westminster Cathedral has been predictably craven in its response to the pandemic, embracing and adding to the Government's control-freakery. When services resume, we can expect the long-planned dumbing down of the world's premier Catholic choir to be blamed on the virus. Don't believe a word of it – and please listen to the podcast.

Linda’s award winning book—Military Fly Moms ~ Sharing Memories, Building Legacies, Inspiring Hope [Tannenbaum Publishing], was published in 2012, and is a biographical collection of the inspiring true stories and photographs of seventy women who shared the same two dreams—becoming aviators in the military, and being moms.

With Holy Week and Easter—and all the work that goes into the music then—safely behind us, Thomas and Richard are able to get together for another episode of Staved Off. They discuss the concert Bach, Sorrow and Joy with The Song Company in the Crypt and Anthony Pitts’s new Agnus Dei from his forthcoming Mass. Holy Week and Easter always require a huge amount of work from Saint Mary’s Cathedral Choir, and this year was no exception. The addition of brass and timpani for Easter adds a layer of complexity, and Thomas was even required to sing at one point! We were able to address the questions that were sent in for this episode, about Responsorial Psalms and Mass preferences. Videos of some of the Easter performances have been posted online, which has led some Internet commenters to question Thomas’s conducting style.Music in this episodeFelice Anerio (c. 1560–1614), Christus factus est (extract) [0:00]Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525–1594), Sicut cervus [30:12]Martin Baker (arr.), O filii et filiae [50:23]

With all due respect, as much as I love my singer-songwriters and my indie bands that make up such a large portion of the guests on this show, every once in a while, it's great to just kick back with a hard rock/metal band and just let 'er rip. After four and a half years of doing this, I of all people, should know better than to have pre-conceived notions about what any performer is going to be like when you meet them off-stage -- there have been many fun variations on this theme over the years. It wasn't until meeting September Sky, however, that I realized this can also drastically change the way you view and listen to the band's music. September Sky's debut EP, Bright Skies to Dark Days, is a strong starter out of the gate, no doubt about this. Six tracks run the gambit of more straight-forward hard-partying rock (Freakshow) and progressive metal (Awakened), with occasional dips into the darker side (Ted). I initially liked it the CD for this musical diversity and the way it conveys various emotions through both music and lyrics (blah blah blah) -- "surprisingly sophisticated" was my initial assessment. After meeting the band, and I think it is captured in this show, I realized that what I really liked about the CD is how well the band plays together as a unit. I suppose actors would call them very "giving" artists, but it just doesn't sound right in the context of a hard rock/metal band. The point being, here are four guys who are all very good at what they do, but unlike a lot of their contemporaries, the emphasis is very much about what's good for the end result, and not so much about the individual. We all know, from a song like "Give it Away" that Larry Crag can write and play killer up-front riffs, but at the same time on a more-emotional track like "Ted," he understands its more about Scott Bernhardt's primal vocal performance, and he very wisely sits back just a bit so as not to compete with it. Likewise a track like "Shine a Light" is all about the rhythm section of bassist Jeff Reagan and drummer Martin Baker, and while on that track in particular, all four members are firing on all cylinders, nobody's individual performance is overpowering the band as a hole. Which makes it all the more ironic that when you sit the four guys down to do an interview, they are completely drowned out by a hardcore metal band doing a sound check at the other side of the venue -- so, sorry about the audio in the second half of this one. You should have heard it before I cleaned it up.
