Bringing us to the Wind River Reservation, this week's guest, Jason Baldes, shares his work to bring back wild Buffalo to Wind River and to rematriate land to the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes. Jason offers his deep wisdom about the ecological, spiritual, and cultural importance of buffalo.Jason's work with the Wind River Tribal Buffalo initiative has already had an immense effect. The physical and cultural landscape of the so-called United States is steeped in a colonial worldview, but work like Jason's is changing the tides and aligning conservation with long-standing Indigenous values. This healing work honors those ancestors who had buffalo, land, and ritual stolen from them by the United States government. Jason, an enrolled member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe, received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in Land Resources & Environmental Sciences from Montana State University, where he focused on the restoration of buffalo/bison to Tribal lands. In 2016 he spearheaded the successful effort to relocate a herd to the Wind River Indian Reservation and works with both the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho Tribes in buffalo management and expansion. He is an advocate, educator and speaker on Indigenous cultural revitalization and ecological restoration who has also served as director of the Wind River Native Advocacy Center, where he was instrumental in the passing of the Wyoming Indian Education for All Act. He currently splits time as executive director of the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative, and Tribal Buffalo Program Senior Manager for the National Wildlife Federation's Tribal Partnerships Program. Jason sits on the board of directors of the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council and the board of trustees for the Conservation Lands Foundation. For an extended version of this episode, please join us at patreon.com/forthewild. (Yellowstone National Park, WY) - In Celebration of Yellowstone National Park's 150th anniversary, the Mountain Time Arts (MTA) group organized a project called Yellowstone Revealed, a "series of place-based projects by an inter-tribal group of Indigenous artists and scholars," which took place from August 17-28. Patti Baldes, Fremont County local, artist and organizer of the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative, was asked by MTA to contribute, which culminated in the REMATRIATE project, which had a theme of restoration and giving land back "specifically to the buffalo." "The focus is connection, honest obligation to the land, self and healing," Baldes commented. The project involved creating moving buffalo sculptures made of willow branches, red birch and chokecherries, with 12 dancers, all women and matriarchs, bringing the buffalo sculptures to life. Local musician and artist Christian Wallowing Bull led 10 drummers while the buffalo dancers performed, singing the Floyd Red Crow Westerman cover of the Johnny Cash song "Drums." "It's the greatest thing I've ever been a part of in my personal life as well as my professional career," Wallowing Bull commented. “It is an honor to take part in such a powerful historic intertribal event. Shout out to Patti for the vision for rematriation. I stand with all my relatives.” The ceremony was performed both August 24th at Madison Junction, and August 25th at Old Faithful. Jason Baldes, an Eastern Shoshone who lives on the Wind River Reservation, is the Tribal Buffalo Coordinator for the Tribal Partnerships Program at the National Wildlife Federation. He works to restore bison back to homelands of indigenous tribes, like his own, as a way to reconnect and celebrate cultural ways, as well as heal from the atrocities of the past and present. As the tribal bison coordinator for the National Wildlife Federation, Baldes is recognized nationally for his efforts in an indigenous-led movement to return buffalo — the term Native Americans prefer — to Western reservations. His work is centered on his own Wind River Reservation, which is roughly the same size, and as ecologically diverse, as nearby Yellowstone National Park. If you have questions about Jason's work and would like to get involved, feel free to email Jason at BaldesJ@nwf.org.
