Hey Team!I was listening to the radio the other day when My Own Worst Enemy by Lit came on - a fine example of pop-punk from the late 90's.And while I enjoyed the song, what stuck with me was thinking about the name of that song, My Own Worst Enemy. This is a feeling I have often felt with my ADHD. I seem to have an endless supply of maladaptive and self-destructive behaviors that stem from the condition.Poor time management, hyper-focusing on non-priority tasks, overcommitting, and procrastination are just a few examples of how my ADHD can manifest in ways that feel counterproductive. And what we're talking about is a view of our worst self. That self of ours comes out in ways that we may later regret or that seem to work against our interests. And with ADHD, these moments can be frequent and frustrating. There have been many times when I've thought about this worst self of mine and how I wish I could undo all the bad inside of me. I mean, looking around online, it isn't hard to find people who prescribe how you can become your best self. However, many of our worst selves' behaviors do not indicate our value as people; instead, they're a reflection of our unmet needs and coping mechanisms. And so in today's episode, we're going to be talking about this worst self of ours, how it manifested, why perhaps we should have a bit more empathy for these maladaptive behaviors, and also how we can work on moving forward to perhaps not our best self, but at least possibly, a better one.Support me on PatreonAsk me a question on my Contact PageFind the show note at HackingYourADHD.com/188This Episode's Top TipsApproach the idea of your worst self with empathy. Focus on the fact that you developed these maladaptive behaviors for a reason.Pay attention to the situations and emotions that trigger your worst behaviors to anticipate and manage them more effectively.Often, our maladaptive behaviors come out when we're not doing a good job of meeting our basic needs. If we're engaging in numbing behaviors, we can look below the symptoms to try and see what's setting them off.

"Big things coming soon..."This is a troupe that a group of my friends and I have been laughing at.. It's usually perpetrated by your local cover band on social media right before they drop an atrocious rendition of Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy" at their next show.... "Oh, what a surprise!! Didn't see that one coming!!" ..But in all seriousness, I think about it ("big things coming") a lot in terms of this very podcast. The things that I work on in order to grow the show. There's something deeply ironic, yet novel, about dropping an episode that goes into the deep details of making this very podcast- but this one (I feel) has an extra level of sincerity in terms of growth, goals, and moving towards a future. Moreover, this is me personally asking of a favor, and simultaneously "thanking you" for your role in growing the show....I don't want to be the guy that "cries wolf," but if you've ever supported this show- this would be a prime listening experience and I appreciate every moment you can give to it! :-)www.caughtonthemike.com

This week on Yes But Why, I talk to improviser and producer, Wendy Salome. Wendy Salome serves Austin's creative community through the Coldtowne Theater. She was the Chief of Staff for ColdTowne Theater from 2018-2020. She improvised with the ColdTowne House Troupe, “Porch Cat” as well as the all-mom troupe, “My Secret Friend.” Wendy produced the B. Iden Payne-nominated show Junior Year Abroad and co-produced My Own Worst Enemy. After a long stretch of pandemic-induced hibernation from creative projects, she emerged in May 2022 to co-produce and play in The Emma Dilemma. When she's not dabbling in the improv world, Wendy works as an Election Clerk for Travis County Elections and serves as the president of the board for Griffin School. In our conversation, Wendy and I talked about how hard it can be to ALLOW yourself to be creative. There is such a strong pull to “have a solid foundation” and “take care of your family” that many of us with creative aspirations have held ourselves back. Still, the pull to be creative is strong. We keep going back to creative projects even though we're working elsewhere. But it's so hard! Why can't we just enjoy ourselves? Why can't we allow ourselves to have this joy?Wendy got introduced to improv when she put her kids into classes with Kristen Henn. Watching her children have so much fun, she got the improv bug. Wendy also found a love of stage management and producing. She thrives on helping others build a show. Wendy talked about being inspired by Nathan Sowell. When he asked her to be involved with The Emma Dilemma, he helped reignite her passion for the arts after the pandemic. We had a great deep dive on how the pandemic affected our creative output. It deflated us. We were sad. We were burnt out. Wendy and I discussed how we clawed our way out of that hole and came back to being the artists that we naturally are. If you found yourself cutting a rug on a rock club dancefloor in the late '90s – and, ahem, I'm just speaking hypothetically, obviously – then it's highly likely that you were doing that, at least sometimes, to Orange County rockers Lit, specifically their 1999 mega smash 'My Own Worst Enemy'. Even now, I am obsessed with that song, and I'm not alone – last year the band even released their own podcast, charting the cultural impact of a song I truly believe is one of the genuinely perfect pure pop singles released within my lifetime. Now the band are back back back with their first album in 5 years, the old skool riff-o-rama of their 7th studio album, Tastes Like Gold. It's a thoroughly entertaining record, and so I thought it might be fun to connect with the band's guitarist and ever constant, Jeremy Popoff, which I do here on this episode. It's an interesting chat – about songwriting, durability, Bowling For Soup and the chaos of Woodstock '99. Settle in. But first, please tell me, why my car is in the front yard. Especially since I don't even drive…The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Spoook is also a record label, a promoter, a shop, a Substack - it's many things. Lit paved the way for the modern rock scene in the late 90s with "My Own Worst Enemy" getting airplay not just in their home, California but right around the world. The rock wave later introduced bands like Good Charlotte, Blink 182, Simple Plan and Sum 41 to the mainstream, pls being part of major sound tracks like American Pie. Ajay and Jeremy have made a huge change, moving to Nashville to adapt to the evolving music scene but have stayed true to their sound and what made them famous. You'll hear some great stories from the guys including a classic stuff-up at the AVN Awards in front of Gene Simmons and how they managed to get Steven Tyler to sing on one of their tracks. Our guest this week is author Robert Edric. Robert's first novel, Winter Garden, was published in 1986 and went on to win the James Tait Black award. Since then, he has written a grand total of twenty-eight novels. Including Peacetime and Gathering the Water which were both longlisted for the Booker Prize. The Telegraph described his backlist as “one of the most extraordinary bodies of work to appear from a single author”. Robert's latest book, a memoir, is called My Own Worst Enemy and is a touching and vivid portrait of 1960s working-class Sheffield. At the core of this deeply engaging account of a bygone era is the relationship between a deeply insecure and overbearing father and his educated son, of two people join by blood and yet are worlds apart. D. J. Taylor writing in The Spectator described it as “Neatly written, psychologically acute and never disguising the hurt that lies at its core, this is a small masterpiece.” The podcast is produced and presented by the team at Mostly Books. Find us on Twitter @mostlyreading & Instagram @mostlybooks_shop. Edited by Nick Short @alongstoryshorter. My Own Worst Enemy is published in the UK by Swift.
